"I got it," Chel said. She didn't stop at squeezing, she laced her fingers in between his. "I got it," she repeats.
Whether she has a grip on things or not is inconsequential. She needed something to feed to Jack.
"You're such a drama queen," she whispered.

He snorted and let their fingers entwine. "Apparently Nazari thinks so too," he said as he tossed his hair back unnecessarily and sighed. "I guess I'll just have to accept that I am, and that you all will just have to deal with it."

She liked the temporary reprieve from her thoughts that came from holding Jack's hand. She lived off what little he offered. Yet she still hadn't smiled. "I already do," she comments.
"How will you keep me safe?" If there is to be action, there needs to be a plan.

He made a musing noise, as if he had actually thought this part out. "What we're looking at is at least a few days of observation," Jack said after a moment. "Unless something happens, there shouldn't be anything else to worry about, honestly. I'll still keep tabs regardless until we figure out what it is. Already have to on Finn's bite wound and possibly Ripley just to be safe, so why not, right?"

"And when something happens?"
Not if.
When.

"I'll figure something out," he said with a shrug, since clearly that had worked out so well last time. "I always do."

She rests her head on the pillow behind her back, staring up at the ceiling. "Jack ..."
It takes a long breath for her to get it out. "If they ... if they want to pod me, or they want to experiment ... pull my chord. I don't wanna live like that." She was unsure if she could even trust Jack to do it.
There is a long silence and she squeezes his hand again for bravery. A shudder runs down her spine regardless. "If I can't live on my own terms ... I don't want to." She doesn't want to even now, but this is the only limited condition she can make. It scared her, being alone in this condition, and her demeanor shows it. Chel was never good at masking her emotions.

He was about to say she should have thought of that before making stupid deals with people who were clearly bad ideas, but he let it go. Bad ideas seemed to be Chel's specialty: like thinking he was worth pursuing. "Naturally," he agreed with a nod. He found himself laying his other hand atop hers and sandwiching it in silent encouragement. A condition was a step up from before. "I'm starting to miss the pink and orange," he commented abruptly.

It took her a second to realize he was talking about her hair. "Pretty sure hair dye and open wounds don't mix," she responded.
A hand went to comb through her blue hair, which at this point had turned brittle and dry from all of the neglect. "I miss the green," she said, referring to his hair.

Jack glanced at his bangs and clicked his tongue. "It'd take a while to put anything in with all this ******** hair. I've really let myself go." He paused. "Sorry about that," he said with what could have been a wince. "I just...reacted on instinct. We pulled all the shards out."

"It looks good." It was true, his hair had gotten unruly and uneven, but there was something about it that Chel liked better. "Looks more natural." Less tamed and perfectly trimmed, tucked into place. More Jack.
Hearing Jack apologize relieves tension in her chest, but her guilt increases. It increases because she resists the urge to say she wished he would have gone farther and finished the job. "S'okay. You did what ya thought was right. S'all that matters."

"You say that now," he said with a little wry smile, "but you'll change your tune when I start pulling off ponytails better than you." He paused again. "Were you aware while it happened?" he ventured to ask.

She raised an eyebrow. Was he complimenting her in a ponytail or just raising his own ego? Probably the latter.
"No ... He sends me other places. I don't know what he does when I'm gone." She left it very vague, not sure she wanted to go into detail. "He switched back when you ... When you hit me. Guess he didn't want to take the heat." Her voice was tiny, retreating inwards again.

He tilted his head and considered Chel. Whatever had taken control of her didn't seem to match the description of the man she'd given: it had been confused and disoriented in the beginning. Am I doing this correctly at the moment? Then it had paused and put the dialect back on, like forgetting a coat for colder weather. And then it had just grown hostile. He didn't like the implications. "Any place in particular?"

"Jack ... M'not a test subject ... Not yet," she said tiredly. But she saw in his eyes that he needed answers. "But no. One time it was a forest ... One time a city in some Asian place. The time with you it was a waterfall. First time it was a cliffside with water crashin everywhere." She leaned back onto her pillow once more and closed her eyes. She almost hoped he would take her now.
