"Sorry, sorry right." Back to messing up. "Anyways, we made this deal that to earn my forgiveness he had to go to the haunted house and not kill something. Like he had to talk to it and try to get to know it. I told him if it attacks him, sure he can fight back- I didn't want him gettin' killed or nothin', but he had to take a picture with one or I wouldn't believe him." She grinned, still believing this was a very smart plan.

"Well he went to the haunted house alright, but he went with another hunter- some lifer I don't know- and they were capturing a demon. So yeah, great ******** effort Evan. Anyways I guess Shun happened to be there and he attacked- I mean rightfully so right? 'Cause they were like kidnapping a ******** person which isn't cool for ANYONE to do like who even- sorry right, so Evan and this lifer apparently left Shun to bleed out. And then Evan comes to my room and brags about it! Like what the hell?" She paused, her own voice starting to feel a little raspy. It hadn't been used in a few days after all. "Um. Yeah so anyways. We just argued and I kind of told him it was over? But like in a friend way. Well like in a friends with benefits way. Either way we're not on speaking terms. I-" Her voice cut off for a moment, almost as though the phone line had died, and she said, "I'm really scared Jack ... He threatened me with treason and I'm afraid he's gonna really do it ... I'm really scared someone's going to just like ... bust down the door and drag me to a pod. It's kind of why I haven't ..." She shook her head. "A-Anyways, I went to the haunted house and Shun's fine- I mean not that it matters to you, it was just important for me. See Evan didn't tell me about the capturing a demon part- Evan just said Shun attacked him unprovoked, but Shun told me the whole story ... He's honest like that ..." It was a somewhat fond statement.

There was a brief pause as she wasn't sure what to fill the air with. Did she keep going? Did he need to say something? A joke, then. "This is the part where you say mhmm."

Several things occurred to him as she explained. Well, maybe more than several things.

1.) Chel was an idiot for opening the door in the first place.
2.) Chel was an idiot for texting him while Evan was in there.
3.) Capturing demons must have meant Ami was moving forward with her project. He needed to get back asap just for that alone.
4.) Chel apparently didn't learn from their talk about this sensitive topic how to be discreet. No, stubbornness and loyalty had to be advertised with a foghorn to someone who had clearly been hostile before.
5.) Chel was an idiot.
6.) He was now friends with someone who may or may not get outed as a traitor. This did not look good for someone who already had a mark on his record.
7.) He did not honestly know his feelings about students, having been neutral up until that b*****d reaper started applying shock therapy to him.
8.) Evan was now more or less Someone To Avoid, even more so given his ties to Stormy and Jack's own less than squeaky clean image therein.
9.) Chel really was friends with these Penumbra people.
10.) <******** Chelsea Craft making things difficult.

All together, though, it was much harder to figure out how to respond: someone was in possible danger from someone else in a matter he had steadfastly managed not to get involved in besides a now empty promise to keep tabs on the violator, all of which could have been avoided if Chel just wasn't so Chel. The was a soft jostling over the line as he shifted on the bed. The cap came off with heavy resistance and he proceeded to take several more deep gulps. The sigh afterwards was audible.

"Maybe you should stay with your cousin a while," he suggested calmly.

"No," Chel said quickly, without an ounce of hesitation. There was almost alarm in her voice. Then more quietly and calmly, she said, "Chris isn't getting involved. End of discussion."

Evan's threat to Chris was still very real in her mind.

She would protect those that she could.

Another few moments and she said, "That goes for you too." It was a soft voice, one restraining something. "If you don't want to get involved, I'll leave you out too. It's totally understandable- I mean it's kind of why I've just been holed up in my room, you know?." She bit her tongue, realizing she hadn't mentioned that part yet. How afraid she was. She tried to form another sentence. About how she didn't know what to do. How stupid she felt. How stupid she was. How she felt trapped by the academy's walls, strangled. All that came out was, "Sorry. I just mean I don't want anyone dragged through the mud, cousin or not." She laughed weakly and added, "That's my job."

"You've been holed up in your room," he repeated.

There was a strained pause from him after that because he didn't know what was the correct choice here. And make no mistake, there was always a wrong and a right way in every conversation for Jack, like life did have some basis in the video games Abbi so loved to inundate his ears with chatter of. This dialogue line gave you more points. This dialogue line gave you less points. This dialogue line locked you in for the bad ending.

It had been literal years since he had been in this position, listening to someone sit in a less than enviable position say they needed no help when everything about it screamed they did.

He huffed a sigh, half for something to do, half to show the line wasn't dead. "If I don't get involved, what, I'll just have to watch you get skewered?" he asked in a weary tone. "Because that's bullshit. When'd you get a martyr complex anyway?"

Chel grinned and said, "Wouldn't be skewered. You'd just get to see my mangled body in a pod. Like a picasso." That was a lovely thought.

"Martyr complex? What's that mean? Like I throw myself in front of the bus for people?" She mixed the idiom up, but the point was there. "I guess so. Just don't like seein' other people gettin' in trouble for doin' nothin'? Just seems kind of stupid to me."

"Kinda nice to hear you say that though ..." she admitted, "Did the horses mess around with your insides? 'Cause I think the horsemen ... they might have ... given you a heart."

The more she spoke, the more he regretted saying anything at all. Not just for his usual reasons of being averse to being mushy, but because the image of mangled bodies and messed insides triggered a sudden wave of nausea. Jack swore he felt the whispers in his ear again and sharply sucked in a breath, squeezed the neck of his water bottle.

"Don't ******** joke," he hissed, his voice quickly turning gravelly from the force behind it. "That's your life, Chelsea Craft, that's your ********' life, so give two shits about it or you're on your own."

Bad dialogue choice. (Too soon, too soon, god he was a p***y.)

Chelsea held her breath, afraid of the sudden turn Jack had taken. She'd dealt with grumpy Jack, irritated Jack and even pissed off Jack, but never truly angry Jack.

"Sorry." Her personal tag line. "Too soon, I'm really sorry. Don't hurt yourself or your voice okay?"

Don't leave me.
Don't leave me.
Don't leave me.

It was a startling revelation that someone, even someone like Jack, was concerned with her wellbeing. The past 2 weeks she'd felt like there was no one to concern herself with, no one that would even care if she was declared a traitor. Worse yet there had been no one to talk to about it. "I'll try ... It's just really hard." She paused and said, "Thinking you died really didn't help. Give some notice next time." She laughed and said, "Even if it means talking to Stormy!"

Died...?

The phone, right. Their conversation had grinded to a halt with Evan and never picked back up. There were probably phantom messages he'd never get to see; no more saved evidence of his mistakes either. Clean slate everywhere for him down to the layers of his very skin, save for the baggage he insisted on dragging with him.

It was much too late to avoid hurting himself.

"Busy trying not to die," Jack grumbled before downing more water. His head was starting to throb, and he tried laying back and switched ears on the phone. It was clear he was still seething at her blase attitude, which was preferable than trying to figure out what his supposed death might have meant to her (causes and effects and meanings and consequences of a life on another life). "M'serious. Get your s**t together. And tell Axton or I will."

She could hear the tiredness in Jack's voice and she tried to force herself to leave him be. She had so many more questions, but she couldn't push him.

"Mmm. Well keep it up on the not-dying front tiger," she teased. More seriously, she said, "Axton? Oh Chris. Yeah I'll tell him." It was a mumble really, but when Chel made promises, she didn't go back on them.

More casually, she said, "Would the promise of coffee ice cream keep you from the brink of death?"

She said the magic words. With great relish Jack said, "God yes. I haven't had any coffee at all since leaving, you don't even know."

Even just thinking about ice cream made him feel a little less nauseous. Anything non MRE related did.

"Good," Chel responded with satisfaction. She liked hearing Jack's desire- it was close to begging and that was something she knew she'd NEVER hear from him. "Because I bought some and its sitting in my fridge. I was going to wait to surprise you but you sound like you needed some motivation."

Certainly her talk of dying hadn't done that. "You wanna take a rest now?"

"Mm." But there was still one last question that bothered him, one he already knew the answer to and yet somewhat dreaded hearing anyway. "Did you go into my room?"

"... Yes but-" she blurted, already ready to defend herself. "I was just returning a jacket you left in the labs. I just threw it into the closet I didn't see anything I swear I left after."

She thought for a moment and added, "Ian didn't do a good job of keeping me out. I almost convinced him you were gay it was awesome. Next time leave me in charge I'd kick butt."

Yeah because that was going to happen.

"You what."

It was easy to picture the look Jack was giving her with just those two words. Any vague notions of breaking radio silence with Ian died. He took a lot of offense at Chel's tasteless joke and the prickly silence showed it.

"Shits n' giggles, huh," he said in a flat tone that indicated he was a second away from hanging up on her. Hell, he was waiting for her to mention the shoes just to add a cherry on the shitty sundae, because given how inept Ian was at room guarding, it would just be his luck. "Hope that was worth it to you."

"Aw Beanstalk," she whined. "Don't go sour on me. Ian didn't believe it for more than a second, really. He called me some mean names too, so we're even." As if that was consolation.

She wondered why it concerned Jack so much. "Is it 'cause you're afraid of me revealing your secret love affair lady friend?"
