Adelaide blinked and scanned her memory. Then she nodded. "Of course. They said he was the best privateer on the sea. Everyone looked up to him if they were itching to be a pirate or privateer. He was an admired man. Many in the kingdom said that when he vanished, he began to live elsewhere, under a different name with the riches and profits he had made." She sighed out the last bits and looked at Arianne, tilting her head softly. "Why?"

Arianne bit back a sob at that last statement, smiling bittersweetly as a single tear trailed down her cheek. "Because that mans real name was Dewey... And he was my father." She lifted her gaze to her friend with a sad smile, like she expected her to bolt from the room. "I grew up on his ship. From the day I was born... to the day he sank to the bottom of the sea. I, Holy Lady Arianne Kyoko, was once Tahlia, daughter to the most infamous and feared privateer on the seas." She gave a hollow laugh. "And no, I was not born on the right side of the sheets." At the last minute, Arianne realized that was a pirate phrase for illegitmate, that the princess might not understand.

Adelaide could tell by the tear that something was about to be uncovered. She stood up, and heard as her friend told her about her life before. "I.." She couldn't say anything, but walked up to her friend and hugged her tightly. "Lia, If I'd known. . ." She stopped herself and corrected herself. "You had a wonderful father, though I didn't know him personally. I wish I had known this earlier." She sighed softly. That didn't change anything. The girl she was hugging was her best friend, Lia. The girl she loved with her whole heart. The girl who had endured more than Adelaide had ever.

Arianne smiled painfully, and glanced up at her. "If you'd known from the start, you'd've never come near me." It was probably true, and the only reason no one suspected her to be a b*****d was because her mother had already been feigning marriage for years before she'd been sent to live with her. "I shouldn't have told you at all, I swore away that life when I became a priestess, but since there's a chance the Captain- who guessed who I was- would've lost his temper and told you at some point." What she wouldn't tell her friend is the only thing that ever kept her from running away to live the life of the sea instead- was Adelaide's companionship.

Adelaide held a pained look on her face and she let go of her friend. "If you think that, then you don't know me as well as I thought." She shook her head. "You act as if it's a crime that you had a past, Lia. You might be a holy priestess now, but that doesn't mean you weren't someone before that." She walked away, and laid in the bed, giving space for Arianne to get lay with her.

Adrian sighed as Tahlia said that her freedom died with her father. Once she was out of earshot he muttered, "That's another reason why I'll never follow some backwards religion. My freedom dies, only when I do. Until then, I follow only my whims, and a strong wind." He then sniffed the air and growled softly, "Storm brewing......tomorrow is going to be a bad day."

She laughed bitterly. "Oh Ela, I don't think you would have avoided me for it. You're so bright and caring, to everyone." She smiled up at her, tears in her eyes. "But your parents wouldn't have turned a blind eye to our friendship like they did. It's one thing to be so close to a servant girl- that 'inspires loyalty among the staff', as your father put it. To be close to an illegitimate servant girl would have soiled you." When she laid down, leaving space, Arianne laid down next to her, her back touching Adelaides. "It's not a crime, merely a sin." She murmured, so low Adelaide might not have been able to hear it. "And a very painful weight to bear."

Adelaide sighed. Arianne was right, her parents wouldn't have turned a blind eye. "But I'd keep fighting them to be near you if it had been like that. I never give up, you know that." When Arianne laid down and their backs touched, Adelaide stiffened. Her face grew red, and she was thankful that her friend couldn't see it right now. "Ev-everyone has a past. It shouldn't be a burden, Lia." She said quietly, praying Lia hadn't heard her stutter. It was very un-princess like to stutter and she was already embarrassed enough.

Arianne smiled softly, though her eyes were still sad. "I know that." There was a reason she didn't dwell on her past- once she did, it was hard to get out of the woe-is-me mindset, and she knew personally just how much worse she could have had it. She'd seen women shackled to husbands who abused them, women reduced to whoring... She was lucky, and that's why she did as she was bid. She wasn't sure she could handle living like so many others did... she didn't know if she was strong enough, despite the calm and assured confidence she projected to everyone. Hearing Ela's stutter but knowing better than to comment on it, Arianne smiledd weakly and rolled over to hug her for a moment, before rolling back over. "I know, and one day mine wont feel so heavy, I'm sure. Thank you."

((I'll skip to morning, if you don't mind smile ))

Shortly before dawn, the sky opened and the sea turned violent. Torrential rain, thunder and lighting, wind and waves rocking the ship to a fro. The crew could barely keep their footing as the ship rocked precariously. Adrian was hard pressed to steer the ship well enough to keep it from capsizing. He handed the helm off to his master helmsman, trusting the man to not let him down. Adrian quickly made his way to his cabin, where his passengers slept. He threw open the door, dripping wet, and lighting flashes sending an eerie light through the porthole, and deafening thunder drowning out the sound of rain for a few seconds..
"If this is what you Goddess sent you into," Adrian said bracing himself on the door, "Then she is a b***h. In all my time at sea, I have never seen a storm as bad as this. It is as though the God of the sea himself is against us." He said before the boat shifted harshly once again. "If your Goddess is really as good as you claim. Then I suggest you pray. And I advise you stay in here. On deck, you're likely to get swept off."

Arianne was already awake by the time Adrian had arrived in the cabin, pulling on her boots and preparing to go topside. When he burst in and began complaining against her goddess, she merely tossed her braid over her shoulder, ignoring it. She went into the cupboard, pulling out her mirror, and staring into it. It remained silent, no words spoken. Mumbling something under her breath, she returned it to where she'd hidden it. She kept her footing, no matter how harshly the boat tipped, in a manner that almost astounded herself. IT was like every lesson she'd ever had as a child had flooded back.
At his comment about staying within, she swung around and stared him in the eye. "No. I've been below deck once before during a storm like this, and it was a miracle I survived." She frowned. "A miracle that did not pass to my father. You know I can handle myself on a boat, you know I can help. Let me up there." If he honestly told her no, to stay down here, she'd listen. "You're the captain, I won't disobey you, but you know I can help."

Adelaide had been awake as long as Arianne, except she wasn't very good at keeping her footing. She lost it a few times, tumbling around, but eventually regained her footing as she stayed in the corner. She watched as the two went on their conversation, more like debate, and frowned as she felt her footing slipping again. She fell on her butt and frowned, just sitting down. Maybe this is why she wasn't a big fan of boats.

Adrian smirked and raised an eyebrow before frowning. "And tell me, Arianne," He said going back to, what he called, her false name, "What good would a Priestess do, during a storm? And your little Princess friend can barely stand up. On deck, she'd already be in the ocean." He then locked his eyes onto hers. "Unless of course, I'm talking to Tahlia. If she is here, I could use an extra hand on deck. I'm needed back at the helm, but I need some sharp eyes to see through the storm, so I don't run aground." He said as he turned on his heel and strode back on into the gale, returning to the helm.

Arianne gritted her teeth as she watched him storm away, glancing back at Adelaide. "Stay here. For the love of the goddess, stay here." She turned towards the door, taking a deep breath. "Goddess save me, I'm bringing Tahlia back, at least for tonight." Rushing up onto deck, she stared through the storm, her hair being whipped into her face but not bothering her. The sting of the salty wind left burns on her cheeks, ruining the pale complexion of the priestess. Running up to the helm, Arianne dodged pirates who were running about the ship, struggling to keep it afloat. "Tahlia's back, Captain- how would you use her?" She yelled, to be heard through the wind, even as she braced steady feet against the deck and assessed the situation.

Adrian was struggling with the wheel, trying to steer into the waves and the wind. "Well," He groaned as he gripped the wheel tightly. "You've got good eyes, yes? I need to focus on the helm, but I also need to know whats ahead of us, so I don't crash. And if you can, help my first mate make sure the sails are tied tightly! The pull free and we're dead."
