[Diedre]

Ah, a blue and another green. She wasn't sure what that meant, if anything.
She moved back a bit as the Obnoxious Green fumbled and bounced around. Ugh. These were serious times!
The Guardian blue seemed to have it right. But... oh dear, he looked angry. She had heard of maulings and, well... Suddenly she realized just how close she was to the hatchlings.
And the roaring.
She had to admit she was thankful when the angry, territorial blue clawed its way through the boys side. Shenja wasn't there anymore, so she had no reason to worry. She turned her attention to the other eggs, missing the sneaking blue entirely, distracted by the posturing blue.
Hmph. Really now. He didn't look that impressive.

Poth was briefly distracted from the important business of eating when her sister called out to her. But not too distracted, of course. She looked over at Kaltath even as she opened her mouth for another piece. It goes well, now that I have found mine and he is feeding me. Though he is not fast enough at it, she added and nudged Tacelon. He'd paused in reaching for more meat to she what she'd been looking at, and ended up looking at the other new weyrlings gathered at the tables. He looked back to her, sent a feeling of apology and fed her more meat.

He'd also noticed Shenja smiling at him and smiled shyly back, giving a small wave. He considered doing the same for the other weyrlings, but Poth was keeping him too busy to try and catch their attention.

[Shenja and Kaltath]

Kalteth said excitedly. She was distracted from the actual feeding until Shenja poked her with some meat.

"You really should eat, or else I'll start making up nicknames."

Well, she couldn't say no to either!
She said, chewing happily.

"Well, Kat, for one. Kally..."

Her attention veered back to Poth. She wanted to talk to Poth.

"... Sure!" which was good because his head was buzzing too much to come up with good nicknames. Later, maybe. He picked up the chunk of meat and moved closer to Tacelon and Poth.

"Kalteth, didn't she say that she wanted to eat?" He'd sort of overheard through the bond- gosh it was so amazing he couldn't believe it. So the other dragon was Poth...

"Well, you gotta eat first and then wait a bit. Otherwise you wont' be able to race" he waved a piece of meat in front of her nose, "There, see?"

Of course, she ate it, why not.

"We'll see!" He laughed, only half aplogetically, as he turned to Tacelon.
"I'm Shenja, and you?"

[C'tis]

"What?" C'tis blinked and looked down at Rochelle. "Well, yes," he agreed with a shrug, "not saying you shouldn't hate her. I don't, but then I'm not exactly attached to Bereck, and also she stitched me up rather than slapping me.... Not that I've got anything again him either, just... not close to him like you are, and I'm not sure he's too keen on me to be honest. Always looks like he's disapproving of something or other." Shards that had been badly worded, she should just hand his knots over right now! Oh well, he was fairly sure he'd got his meaning across.

"Better him than 'wingleader I live in a storybook' though," he added with a snort and a shake of his head. He didn't hate the woman or anything but he did find her mannerism pretty ridiculous.

******************

"Congratulations rider," Bereck said with a nod as the young man and the dark blue moved over to him. "Hold still, this shouldn't take long," he continued, getting awkwardly down onto his knees again with a small grimace.

"Shouldn't need stitches," Bereck muttered as he inspected the wounds, shifting the rider's candidate robes out of the way to do so. "Really don't see the point of these damn robes, light leather armour would be far more sensible, but we'd hate to break with tradition!" Muttering to himself as he worked was a habit Bereck had got into many many turns ago and never seen the need to break, perhaps partially because he hardly noticed he was doing it. "More costly I suppose but not that much," he mumbled as he started cleaning the lacerations. "Keeping robes so pure white isn't exactly cheap, how much worse could be adjustable leather gear? Humph...."

Redwort applied Bereck smoothed on a little numbweed and then reached for some bandages. "How are you feeling?" he asked with a glance up at his patient. "Faint at all?" Last thing he needed was a large young man collapsing on him, and possibly sending his new dragon between in panic. Calm the dark blue had seemed, certainly, but a new bond was always delicate.

[Kaeyne]

Off went Corloss, bondmate in tow. A handsome blue to be sure, lean lines and apparently no awkward bounding that Kaeyne would see as silly in a dragon for corloss. Granted he knew him for shaff-all but Kaeyne approved of judgement calls being made within five minutes of meeting.

He glanced at Ildresaak. The other Candidate looked like...prey, almost, despite his size. It was the smile. Nervous, small, or seemed it to the shorter man. Kaeyne hesitated for only a moment before nodding in return.

Truce accepted.

"We will ward off any maulers," Kaeyne looked back out to the Sands, his full lips pursed until they smoothed out. "Unless they're ours."

-----

[Rochelle]

"He wasn't too keen on me either, don't feel bad. It wasn't until I was friends with Aleck and with Dad almost every day that he started being niceish," Rochelle shrugged, glued to C'tis' side, and snorted softly. "I totally had a crush on him for like two days before realizing he wasn't interested. Uh, aleck. Not Bereck. Silliest thing ever."

Storybook? Oh! Realization kicked in and with it brough a light laugh. "She was nice, though! Kind of ridiculous but nice. All tiny. Your large friend preened over her. I'm sure she's a better wingleader than, you know, Pretty Hair guy whose but you owned at the wrestling match."
PostPosted: Sun Apr 28, 2013 9:37 am

If C'tis had been drinking something he would have choked. As it was he spluttered and then laughed as Rochelle clarified. "I was going to say!..." Wait, she wasn't interested in Aleck? That was... that was interesting. Very interesting. It didn't mean he had a shot, but at least it meant he wasn't potentially competing with one of his best friends... for his other best friend.

Food for thought. A lot of thought, but later.

"I suppose she's alright," C'tis went on after a rather long pause, frowning as he tried to drag his brain onto this topic, away from the other. "Prefer her over Wingleader TrouserTunnelsnake, or the kid. D'lin seems okay but he's still a shaffing bronzer. Reckon I'll join the frilly talking one's wing when the time comes, if we get a choice. Last lot did." If he didn't get to choose, and didn't end up with the next best option to not a bronzer, to wit a decent bronzer, then he was going to be very unhappy indeed. In general when C'tis was very unhappy indeed he spread it around with the biggest shovel he could find.

Race? Race what? Race at eating? Poth said at Kalteth's first question. Mine doesn't want me to eat too fast, he says I could choke. The next piece of meat she chewed with almost exaggerated care in demonstration.

But the conversation between Kalteth and her rider clarified the question. You mean race like a running race, after eating? She didn't see why her sister would want to do that. I want to nap after my meal. Hatching is tiring work.

Tacelon had been a bit surprised to see the other weyrlings coming over to him and Poth. Why would they do that? But it soon became evident that their dragons wanted to talk, or at least the other green wanted to talk and Poth was responding. He was listening to Poth talking with her sister and finding it odd to be only hearing half of a conversation, so at first he hadn't realized Shenja was talking to him. It took a mental nudge from Poth to look up at the other boy.

"Oh! Sorry," he said, then cleared his throat, embarrassed at the grating rasp of his voice. "Tacelon," he answered. "And Poth," he added, gesturing to the green he was continuing to feed. Then he reconsidered his name. Shouldn't he shorten it, now that he was a rider? But the idea of him being a rider still seemed too foreign to contemplate, so he let the idea go for now.

Ildresaak's lips twitched at the idea that the maulers might go to him or Kaeyne. "If the bitey one's yours, that's cool, but I'm not sure I want an angry one," he said quietly. Of course, he had no choice in the matter, but it was nice to think that maybe by virtue of not wanting a dragon that attacked other people, he could...get one. He wasn't entirely sure how Hatchings worked beyond the basics of If a dragon wants you, it gets you, and there had to be some kind of caveat for dragons that simply wouldn't be compatible - right?

"I have no idea what I'm doing here," he confessed after a second. "I'm not even sure I like dragons as much as I thought I did." Particularly not if they kept mauling people.

The Vibrant blue watched his brother Impress with a snort, not pleased that anything should steal the attention of the crowd from him but apparently not viciously begrudging his brother the moment. Giving another showy flare of his wings and swish of his tail he continued on towards the candidates... sort of. As it stood in fact if he kept walking as he was he would pass neatly between the boys and the girls. Perhaps he wanted them all to look at him before he chose?

Behind him the Kind and Keen egg began to squirm. The hairline cracks appearing all over the golden orange shell were not visible to those up in the Stands, even only the most keen-eyed candidate in the very front ranks would be able to make them out. Observed or not the soon took effect; the shell warped, burst open and a dark green with a bright dorsal stripe sprang abruptly to her feet. Like many of her siblings she promptly collapsed again with a squeak of surprise, abruptly followed by one that sounded almost like a little laugh. Blinking enthused blue eyes flecked with hungry red she stayed where she was while she got her bearings and looked about at her surroundings.

Another distraction? Well no matter, the Vibrant blue was sure he was still the prettiest, they would all be looking at him most! Now passing in between the males and females in their white robes he held his head high, showing himself off to his best advantage. These spectators had come to see him, so they deserved a good show!

Green again? Kleos refused to look anywhere but down at the Sands, if she was seen glancing at the gold riders or her fellow wingleaders.... There would be other colours, either that or nobody would be foolish enough to decide that a lack of large dragons made Cepheith an unfit senior.

Moriath, perched up with her fellow dragons, decided to take matters into her own paws. Cepheith,> she said to the gold, including Sunnath, and all other ranking dragons in her words as well. She was but one voice but she spoke without hesitation, perhaps others would agree with her. Well, probably not the males... which made up all of the other ranking dragons save for Aerith. Ugh! Well, perhaps the clever little white would back her up at least.

Sahar had long past look away from giving the showy Blue his full attention, though amused eyes did cast a glance or two in his direction every so often. It was constantly amazing the young boy at just how much the dragons seemed so....human.

The way they moved, the way they interacted with their human companions.
He pondered again (He seemed to be doing that a lot today, wasn't he?) But the pondering was broken short when another youngling make an explosive entrance into the Sands...with the tumble to match. Chuckling under his breath, Sahar let a broad smile touch his face at the little squeak-like laugh that came from the young green.

Stretching out his arms behind him, the candidate looked towards the perched Green. Hopefully she would find Hers before the egg under her hatched; Sahar was certain whatever sibling was in there wouldn't really appreciate such an interesting welcome.

Mercy and Aerith never missed a hatching - even before gaining their rank they had always held an interest in the arrival of new dragons and so they were sitting quietly watching as the hatchings emerged to find theirs.

Moriath's words were quick to bring an end to the silence however..at least on the part of the dragon. 'And look at how robust and strong they are, they act as though they have been out of the eggs for days already! All of that strutting and hearty eating.' The white chirped at her fellow dragons, eager to add her own praise of the clutch to Moriaths. 'A fine clutch indeed!'

And that was when the little green fell off the egg she had been balancing on. Splat! Right on her belly. Rather than being upset she spent a few moments digging in the sand around her forefeet, flexing her toes and sharp little claws. After studying her paws a bit longer she looked up, and from where she lay her eyes fixed intently on Thrarothar.

The newly hatched green who had come from Kind and Keen twisted her head around to regard her now Impressed sister, humming softly approval; she was more than glad to see another finding Theirs!

The Vibrant blue was now almost past the last candidates. Pausing where he was he looked over his shoulder and after a long moment of thought he added a noise of approval of his own, sharp and high. He was pleased to see his siblings safe, he just wanted everyone to be watching him while they were busy finding theirs!

[Rochelle]

She grinned in blatant triumph at his lovely sputtering, pleased as punch to have caught him off guard as she did. "There's absolutely nothing wrong with older men. Just not one I see as more of a father figure." The glasscrafter grinned and patted his hand. "Besides when I'm friends with the guys kid my own age, it just gets creepy."

Rochelle's fingers hooked together then, hand pulling away from C'tis' though she didn't move from her leaning, almost curled close. He had a nice laugh. She had enough survival instincts to not tell him so in public. Physical affection from her in public, people knew to expect that. Soft and squishy words, maybe not too much.

"I don't see why they wouldn't give us a choice. I think it'd be nice to have a female wingleader. Or one that doesn't sparkle. Are all of them outside of her shiny hides?" Her nose wrinkled, eyes on the newly Impressed green. "Look at her! She's so pretty. Are you really someone who should be talking about frilly words, Harper? You can spin some pretty phrases too. I've heard them. Was suitably wooed."

-----

[Kaeyne]

"The bitey one might be mine," he admitted with the briefest curl of his lips. He'd been called a wher before, a human and pretty one, but a wher never the less. Kaeyne tugged idly at one fallen length of hair. "I'm sure you'd get a mostly nice one."

The Candidate paused and gave Ildresaak another look over, longer than before, and he shrugged. Expressive as always. He wouldn't feel comfortable with a simpering, scared dragon or one that wanted to Chase everything all the time.

"If it's not for you then it's just one day out of your life and you never have to Stand again," Kaeyne said mildly. "A dragon doesn't want to be attached to someone it's not suited for. Don't worry."

"Well, yeah," C'tis grinned, and it was a really rather bright grin, "that would be pretty weird." He liked the way she liked to the close, he was a tactile person in the end regardless of romantic or physical interest. Those two could be separate, and could be separate again from a bone-deep devotion to a friend... but he was starting to think that she checked all three boxes. Damnit. How pleasant could a damn be, a warm wistfulness like the sigh of a summer breeze.

"I suppose I can be," he added, "terrible harper that I am."
