It was impossible for him to keep going at full speed, but he ran as fast as his lungs would allow at the moment. He thought he was doing well, and now was not the time to hold back!

Oxlip called on strength he didn't know he had and pushed himself to the limit. Dirt flew behind him as he raced up the last part of the hill. He could taste blood in his mouth and he was more exhausted than he had ever been. When he reached the top he toppled over to the side and had to stay there panting for a while.
"That was fun," he said, when he could speak again. "Anyone up for another go?"

Maybe Thistledown didn't have to worry about skidding, but the race back up the hill was still much harder than the way down. She started to slow, but refused to back down.

Thistledown dug deep into her reserves of energy as she made her way up the hill, but she could already feel her lungs burning. Not much further now!

Dogsbane was achey. He had not been in high spirits the last two days and these races were just the worst. But today, he felt a strong n** in the air. Today would be different!
He slowly began his decent down the hill, edging to keep his paws under him.

Dogsbane could already feel how good today was going. He didn't lose his footing, even as he jumped a log and picked up the pace to a gentle lope.

He was getting a bit too cocky it seemed. He dug his paws into the ground and went back to a careful gait, having almost tripped a moment ago.

Thistledown crested the top of the hill, mildly disappointed to see that she wasn't the first one. Well, it would be unreasonable to expect to win every race. Perhaps others had been faster, but she had still raced well and she was proud of that.

Okay! Easy does it, dogs! He almost stopped completely as he hit a rather steep area, ears laying flat to his head. He took a few shaky steps, almost at the bottom now.

He sighed happily as he reached the bottom of the hill, not stopping to congratulate himself or catch his breath as he turned to begin the insurmountable climb back up the monstrous down.

Dogsbane wasn't finding this too hard. The base, however steep, was never a problem. It was the summit he was worried about.
