Sherry had barely noticed the mist trainee. It wasn't until Jake's familiar voice addressed her that Sherry looked up.

"Huh? Oh," she said, sadness evident in her own voice. "No, I think...I think," she couldn't say that she was ok, because she wasn't.

"I'll find you if I need anything," she she offered a small smile to Nevada, sad though it was. Sherry knew there wasn't much the girl could do to help her, but she deserved more than the rudeness Jake had offered.

As for Jake, she didn't glance at him, or even think about scolding him. His first mission, and it turned out like this. Poor kid.

Dakota took another selfish moment. Candace had allowed him and now Clerise offered it. And Dakota was selfish, the hug was returned with a gentle wrap of his arms around her waist and tugged close.

It didn't make up for the lack of warmth missing in his head, the heat of the phoenix that was his and only his. But it helped.

He had missed her, it was true. She was his friend. Brother, sometimes lover. but at the end of the day, A geniune friend.

His eyes hooded as he thought of the words to say. What did they fight? What didn't they?

"Insanity." He choked, "We fought insanity. Halloweeners, Hunters, Hunters turned into halloweeners, Halloweeners turned into hunters."

"Bed sounds good babe, and company better. I won't lie to you, don't think I could get it up with all the feelings I got storming around anyways." He leaned on her and gave a hesitated look. "I carried Ceres back, cause she's a moon. I liked her. She was sweet...She was good. She was a good hunter." And she was dead....

Being a good hunter didn't mean good endings.

I'm sorry.

They were words that Eva couldn't bring herself to say aloud as she wrapped her arms around Gale's shoulders, holding him against her as she felt his body wracking with sobs. Giving up, she didn't resist as a tear slide down one of her cheeks, and then the other, giving the blond boy a tight squeeze as she briefly buried her face in his shoulder.

I'm so, so sorry.

She willingly moved back when Candace moved to pull the boy into her arms, and Eva used her newly freed hand to swipe at the wet trails on either side of her face. When the mist hunter asked for her assistance, she was more than happy to oblige, gently leading Gale forward and urging him to forward to Candace's back.

"...Just for a little while," She agreed quietly at the offer before following them out.

"Hah! Right." His lip curled back as he let out a quiet chuckle. However, it wasn't out of amusement or happiness. It was bitter and full of anger. "Maybe next time with the sacrifice of a few more lives, we'll actually find something before we have to tuck tail and run." His anger was quickly raising again, overtaking the sorrow. "Face it. This entire mission, all of it, was a complete and utter disaster. Their deaths were in vain. Nothing was gained. We only took losses." No matter how much anyone tried to sugar coat it, it was the truth and Ryan refused to see it any other way. Ceres and Bix didn't even die as hunters. They died as monsters.

"And Caelius..." Now his expression was one of bitter amusement. Clearly showing, that of all the deaths Ryan was mourning this day, Caelius was not among them.

Feeling tired again, he lowered his head and settled for simply glaring at the wall opposite from them. Eyes half lidded as he shook his head. "I'll live." He hissed out and tucked his one arm under the other, over top the stone tablet.

Deryk just shook his head, not saying or moving any further than that. While he didn't know Minerva that well, he was grateful for her being here, attempting to comfort him. It didn't help that much, but it was still something. His body was pretty unharmed so no bandages were needed. The most he really had were probably some bruises. No. He was just being affected on a much more mental level here.

After a little while, he managed to stop shaking, in which he was just kind of there, sitting limply.

Her poor boy. He was such a tiny thing, sometimes, and now was one of those times. As he rattled off what they fought, Clerise made a mental note: check on EVERYONE who mattered to her. Sasha, Otto, Eva, Reine, Rep, Jordan. She needed to make sure they'd be okay, and if this tablet s**t kept up, maybe offer advice on how to cope without a weapon.

"That sounds terrible in no less than eleven ways," Clerise said, serious, rubbing Dakota's back, scritching along his spine.

She smirked, a little, but it was sardonic at best. "I'm pretty used to you not getting it up," she chided gently, offering Dakota a wink--

Clerise let out a low sigh. Insanity, and a bunch of ******** that she didn't understand. Not yet. The details could be given up in the name of pushing onwards.

"We've lost a lot of good hunters, they weren't the first, and won't be the last. Take the pain and use it, channel it."

She took Dakota by the hand, lacing their fingers together, squeezing them tightly. "Using the pain to fight doesn't mean you have to forget, or that you're not mourning."

So Clerise led the way to Dakota's room, her pace steady and unrushed. She was going to cuddle the <******** out of this man.

"There's no other way than to survive, is there?"

Saya whispered, at Ryan's vehement declaration to live. She had been silent up until this point, simply listening to all the conversations around her and before her. She clutched Prompto, eyes red but dry, fresh tears staining Prompto's tablet.

All the vibrance was gone from the trainee, with little left to cry. it was a feeling one got, from looking, that there was nothing left, every fiber of her being exhausted. Nothing was left.

She stood there, like stone, hands linked together like she always did, in a form of prayer. A mantra in her head repeated over and over, as she watched the bodies carried away.

"Miracles dont exist."

Mimsy wasn't back yet.

That was still acceptable, for there was still time. Others had not yet filtered in, and there were plenty of things to do to keep Konstantin busy. So he moved, on autopilot, attending to anyone in need.

He wished he had attended. It was mandatory, if you were able bodied, but he had been out of commission for a brief period of time.

It made the Russian anxious, for he had no way of determining the status of Mimsy and her state of mind, body, and wellness.

So he was worried, he supposed. It was unusual, and entirely platonic in nature. Kostya was occupying her room, had carried on conversation with her, had come to find her companionship pleasant.

So.

Hearing Sherry's voice only confirmed his suspicion, but didn't bring much comfort. Though, he guessed it was better than having some random stranger sitting beside him. He had already decided it was impossible to make this girl leave him alone.

He hadn't even noticed that the two hunters brought back had been taken away, pronounced as dead.

Alone...
It was so strange.
Only hours ago, he had cursed Chester's existence for invading his head space, but now... it felt odd without him there. There weren't any voices telling him what to do, reprimanding him, and well, stopping him from making stupid mistakes. But now with his head utterly quiet, there was nothing for him to do except reflect. Reflect on everything he did wrong, and how his poor decisions had costed another life.

He heaved a heavy sigh, and finally looked up. The 18-year old looked tired. Ragged, like he had gone through a lifetime of ordeals. His first mission, and he had already gotten his partner killed. Way to go. He looked over to his side, tracing a finger over the runes on the smokey tablet. Was it going to dissipate... like those insanity creatures?

He gripped it tightly, as if to confirm that it was solid, that it wouldn't just up and disappear on him. Chester...

I'm sorry. I screwed up. I screwed up so so much. I'm sorry.

He dropped his head into his hands again.

Harrison let the senior moons look him over. Took his shot. Had his bandages changed. Swabbed the cut on his forehead. At first, he weathered it okay, but the grief was all piling up on him at once, and there were so few of them pouring through the portal-

Rep always seemed so sure, when it came to Jordan. For Harrison, the loss just expanded with each passing second, a bigger and bigger hole in the middle of his heart. Dark, heavy, oppressive, powerless loss, and how could he cope with it, he knew, he knew better, but he was stupid and all the nightmares came flooding back into his exhausted psyche. Jordan, a gaping hole in his back, the worms crawling in and out-

Harrison tried to think about something else.

He could feel Jordan's lips on his, unusually chilly, if he thought hard enough- but he couldn't hold on to the sensation, and he remembered further back, when they were warmer, his breath hot and welcoming-

You can't win, run. He knew that.

It was humiliating, but he'd been humiliated before. He'd take another day. There was worse.

He just didn't know how many days they had left. The Insanity was on the rise, it had gotten stronger. It turned them on each other. It ate Caelius. It used Bix and Ceres and spat them back out, dead, like they were nothing. It killed Marcus. Killed whoever it wanted to. In an instant, it had stripped every one of them of their weapons.

It had also taken and used Circe to rip that portal open. There's no way the portal would show up, otherwise. It could get access to the facilities at any time, and not just that. The House knew their friends and families, it remembered...and Candace had told Harrison about her promotion mission. The one with the town, covered in fog, and the people, ripping each other and Hunters apart. That wasn't Horsemen, that was Insanity. It was already happening. Who knew how many cities...

B0nez was probably dead. He'd never hear him again. Never laugh at dumb jokes, share the heady teenage rush of victory- the ghost was petty, and at times had been vulnerable, unsure. Obsessed with winning. But he had a quick mind and sharp, penetrative intuition when it came to numbers and machines. His partner.

If their weapons were dead, there was no question that they'd be separated. Split up and repodded.

The lazy, peaceful days before today- the uneventful weeks right up until the Festival seemed far away.

Not now, but soon...

His knuckles were white, but there wasn't any pressure behind it. His grip on Rep was frail and human.

Wilson tried to tug at his goggles around his neck, but once again found they were no longer there. His gaze flickered toward the tablet in his lap. “Isn’t that what always happens?” he mused with a wry grin. “I wonder when we’ll ever know why we do what we do. I feel like I’m permanently left in the dark. Caelius? Mmm…” He bit his inner cheek. “A dead leader isn’t good, regardless.”

He leaned over to bump his shoulder against Ryan’s. “And if it doesn’t heal correctly? What will the island do with you then?”

Survive,” he breathlessly echoed Saya. “Isn’t that what we always do? Survive, stumble around blind, get hurt, and survive some more?” Sighing, Wilson clasped his hands together. He reached out to wipe away the tears on Prompto’s tablet. For the most part, his own eyes were dry and calm. “Don’t say that. Miracles exist somewhere. Somewhere…” Just not here.

Dakota could only nod and agree. Eleven and thousand ways that it was terrible.

Just terrible. ******** of terrible.

"Yeah...Yeah I know. Remind me I owe a*****e Rep a good solid beating when I'm feeling not so pathetic." Dakota pushed his hands up into his face and tried to stop the tears that started again.

"Ah man this is embarassing, your never suppose to cry in front of the girls" Dakota juggled the emotions around, but it always came down to tears.

"I think I'll just mourn a little bit longer..."

And he followed her out, big boy crying softly as they headed to his room.

Cuddling would ease the pain...yeah...it would.

Jerry had moved like a ghost, clutching the stone tablet tight against his chest, silent as the techs tended to his once-over. The world felt distant, muted, although he could hear everything.

He felt numb.

It was all too quiet too quiet there was a ringing in his head of a sound you're long used to that is suddenly gone. An absence filled with white noise.

Roar was gone.

All other details, large and small, were muted as he stared at the stone piece in his hands, his brows knit.

Another hunter asked him a question. His mouth opened but he couldn't find his voice and so he closed it again. They left to find someone a bit more useful to talk to.

It was the sudden singing that made him lift his head, glassy eyes searching for it's source, swaying slightly to the familiar sound.

We'll bring those monsters to the gallows...

The song was cut short as he saw them move the bodies.

Bix and Ceres were dead. He hadn't known Ceres very well but she had always been there, as long as he could remember anyway and Bix.... a brother Sun. He couldn't really be...

They weren't immortal. Killzone was testament enough to that.

They were durable but they weren't immortal. Bix was dead.

He had stood, staring after the doorway the bodies had been taken through, the sobbing figures, the shouts... his eyes drifted down to the tablet still clutched in his hand, his expression trembling-

- until with a sudden howl of rage he hurled it away and crumpled into a trembling crouch on the floor.

Jordan stumbled through the portal, moving slow and careful, as though that would help anything. He let the medics look him over, administer a shot, shoo him off; he drifted to one side of the tent then, found an empty spot on the floor, and folded down to sit cross-legged, placing Ferros's tablet in his lap, stroking it over and over, eyes fixed on the cold, cold stone.

It was wrong. It was all wrong. Iron, not stone. Warm. Ferros was never cold. Never.

His mind was empty and raw and hurting and Ferros was gone and in the back of his mind he knew he should reassure his guys and his friends that he was alive and okay, in a manner of speaking, but Ferros was gone and he couldn't do anything, couldn't do anything but sit here with his fingers tracing the shape of the hammer on the tablet's surface, over and over and over again.

The bickering, hugs and general noise around him were only somewhat acknowledged. He was too busy thinking. Wondering. There were so many here without a weapon now, that maybe there was a greater need to find a cure for it. If perhaps the weapons were not truly dead then...

Sobbing and crying caught his ears, his gaze moving to two bodies being removed from the site.

Such finality. No way to pretend what happened didn't happen. So much loss all in one small time frame. There were too many people around. He felt lost. But he also feared being alone now, alone to wallow in the silence of his mind.

Sticking around would do no good. Wait for orders? What orders? He felt like useless cattle waiting here...
