Resting Post

Amaya tucked her legs up onto her chair, her feet pinned beneath her legs. Sure, it wasn’t a “ready for anything” position, but it sure was comfortable. She wiggled her toes in her sandals, it was weird for her to have the freedom to move them. In the shop she had to wear shoes that covered her toes and long sleeved everything. It was nice to feel free and like she could move as she pleased. Though she did miss the heat and the smell of the metal shop, it was nice to get to take in a new location. She didn’t get out much. The child went to market once a week with her mother and that was about it. Amaya would work in the shop or help her mother watch the boys and tend to the house. She was a home body to top it off. Amaya didn’t really have friends her age and she was too shy to go up to people and just start talking to them. That is why she was so thankful to have Sakura in her class. Without her talking to the small girl, Amaya most likely wouldn’t have said a word yet. This was helping her achieve some sense of normalcy and she really valued that gesture. Then again, could pursuing the life of a shinobi really be considered as normal?

Once the inuzaka boy passed her again Yae started jogging at a leisurely pace. The movement seemed to be good for her leg, the pain soon subsiding. She focused on her feet as she ran. She had a strange tendency to do that without really understanding why. Each time a sandal struck the track it kicked up a tiny cloud of dirt, a bit of residual dust setting on the top of the soles. Staring down made it hard to keep one's balance though, and Yae almost ended up face-down in the dirt. When she almost tripped for the third time she corrected herself, fixing her gaze straight ahead. She could already feel herself running out of breath, and she hadn't even made it across a quarter of the track.

Resting Post

This was one of the two happiest times for Amaya: when she could read and when she could just allow her mind to wander. In its wandering, the child looked down at her hands. It was odd to see them so clean. Many of the surfaces and the tools in the shop were covered in soot because the ventilation was poor. That was one thing she would have to change when she took over the shop. It was more or less her appointed place in the family. She would take over the shop when her father was ready to retire and she would hand to down to the boys when she decided she was done with it. Her father, Yukio, had an older brother who had handed over the shop when he started a family. Working in the metal shop was not easy. Not only did it take a considerable amount of strength to shape the metal, but there was also a lot of precision and finesse required to heat and shape the metal properly. However, it was incredibly satisfying work. Amaya had the chance to meet some incredible and creative people. Her father specialized in making custom weapons, so these were the creations of their customer’s dream and visions. The child greatly admired this and she also envied this. She hoped and prayed that, someday, she would be able to make the weapon that she had scribbled down and perfecting over time. Sure, she was only eight, but that means that her weapon was imagined at the most explosively creative time in her life.

Resting Post

Inspiration struck during Amaya’s random day dreaming and wandering thoughts. At that, the child reached into her pocket, pulling out a worn, crumpled piece of paper and a stub of what used to be a pencil. Once she had unfolded it, one could see graphite smudges covering the page from her hand dragging across the image. While it wasn’t obvious to most people what this image was, this was a drawing of the weapon Amaya had dreamt up over the past couple of years. When she decided she wanted to be a ninja, which was shortly after the birth of her brothers, Amaya had begun drawing and doodling – creating the perfect weapon for her. While it wasn’t big, it could be utilized as a one or two handed weapon because it came in two pieces. With her spark of inspiration, the girl rubbed the minimal stub of an eraser over the base of the handle. Once the lines that had once graced the page were scrubbed into oblivion the child started making slow swiping marks. No, it wasn’t one smooth, continuous line. Instead, they were small, choppy lines that just created the general idea. She worked with metals, not pencils. The majority of her artistic abilities were actually non-existent. However, with the image in her head and the rough drawing on her paper, she saw a masterpiece. This would be the ultimate weapon, perfect for her style and what she wanted to do as a shinobi. Content with her new shapes, Amaya folded the pencil stub back into the paper and slipped it back into her pocket for safe keeping.

6 + 0 = 6 Failure

With almost a snap, Amaya came back to the real world and what she was actually supposed to be doing. The child was feeling much more energized, so she knew the bit of rest had done her some good. Sure, she wasn’t back to full, but she wasn’t feeling like she was going to pass out if she tried molding her chakra again. The girl patted her pocket to make sure that her paper was safe and sound where it wouldn’t slip out when she started moving, slipped her numb feet out from under her thighs to put them back on the floor, and refocused on the room she was in. One of the issues she had when is zoned out and allowed herself to wander was that her eyes would lose focus and everything would go fuzzy. But now she was able to make out all the details of the room since she was getting ready to retry her assignment.

Amaya knew she was half way done already, but that had taken a lot of energy. However, she would have to push through it and find a way to finish it. With her mind at least halfway there, this child went back into her routine. A nice, deep breath and closing her eyes, the girl made the dragon seal. She was becoming quite fond of that particular handseal. While she was able to feel her chakra moving in her body, Amaya didn’t have the focus to mold it with her physical energy. While she could have struggled on a little longer, the girl knew that this wasn’t going to be a winning attempt. Reluctantly, the girl released her seal and tried to bring herself back into focus.

Yae pushed on. Jogging seemed to be easier now that she had been doing it for a short while. Starting must have been the hardest part. After that it was all about maintaining momentum. The weather was rather pleasant today. Considerably cooler than it had been a couple days ago, at any rate. If the heat wave had persisted then jogging like this would have been a nightmarish endeavor. On second thought, she could probably just jog through the academy halls. Did it really make a difference where she jogged?

"Of course, I would probably get yelled at if an instructor saw me," she muttered to herself, bored of the quiet morning buzz. "Which would be good motivation to run faster." Yae giggled to herself. The bit of dry humor distracted her, and before she knew it she had already reached the point at which she had begun.

Yae was finding that she could actually run a lot longer than she would have given herself credit for. She slowed to a halt, pausing momentarily to brush a stray bang out of her face. Bursting into a run again she maintained her previous pace. No point slowing down now. There was a cool breeze, and no matter how slight it was still a great relief. Yae was becoming vaguely aware of an ache in her calf muscles. She grit her teeth, ignoring it. There would be plenty of time to recover while she waited for the new students to catch up, but only if she finished jogging in a timely manner.

Yae couldn't seem to breath enough to keep her lungs full. Her legs were sore. And she was even a little hungry. All of these mild nuisances added up, and she couldn't stand it anymore. She decelerated shakily into a stop, hunching over with her hands on her knees. Still panting for breash she glanced over her shoulder, toward the academy. It was too far away to see the inside with any degree of detail. Hopefully Manabu-sensei wasn't watching. The last thing Yae needed was to disappoint another instructor. The sudden negative thought spurred her on, and she was jogging once again.

Resting seemed to have done a great deal in the way of reinvigorating Yae's jogging spirit. Her lungs were full and the pain in her legs seemed like a distant memory. But she was still hungry. Two out of three wasn't bad though. Certainly she wouldn't complain even if someone had been around to complain to. She took off again, though she jogged slightly slower this time. The slower pace seemed like a good idea. Yae was starting to suspect her mistake had been going too fast. The way she saw it, the training should be more about building up a long lasting endurance, rather than a short burst of extreme energy. The only downside is that at this rate the inuzaka boy would lap her.

But it's not a competition. It's not. she kept telling herself.

Yae grit her teeth as she ran. She had abandoned the slow and steady theory, and had started running at a full sprint. Although she realistically had no idea where the other runner was, she could feel him closing the gap. She wouldn't be outdone, he could not lap her. The plan went off without a hitch for all of four seconds. After that the front of Yae's sandal caught the dirt. Her balance thrown off, the girl stumbled two more steps before toppling face-first onto the track. The tiny body laid there for a moment before she sat up on her knees. Shakily she got to her feet and dusted her front off. Luckily she was unhurt as far as she could tell, though one of her sandals had fallen off a ways behind her. Angry at herself, she backtracked to the wooden block and kicked it. "Damn it, that hurt!"

Amaya hadn’t taken enough time to refocus herself before her attempt. Her mind had still been wandering and weaving along the edge of her subconscious when she made her attempt. She had still had her family and her future and her design in her head when she should have been trying to take control of her seemingly elusive chakra. However, the girl was proud that she had made it half way through all on her own and that she had made such steady progress. She wished that she had a bit higher stamina so that she didn’t have to rest so much, but then again this was also giving her the opportunity to point out her weak and weaker points; since all of them were pretty weak.

None the less, the girl was ready to give it another go. With a slow, deep breath, Amaya closed her eyes and created the ram seal. Feeling her energy flowing inside of her the child began molding and melding, trying to force the two together. She was struggling and she was having a hard time focusing still, but she was also beginning to pick up speed in terms of how quickly she was finding the energy and moving the two together. This time she tried holding the two for a longer period of time, just to make sure she had a good hold on it. Once she was happy with it, she let everything go except for the cute little smile that was usually glued to her face.

The Keiji had officially pushed herself past the half way mark of the assignment. That was what little optimism she could muster for this task. She still didn’t understand why, but she was struggling greatly with this task and it was almost getting discouraging. However, with the child’s bizarre sense of positivity she never truly got down about anything. Instead, knowing that her track record was on and off for this task, the girl steeled herself just in case she wasn’t able to mold her chakra together. Maybe it would be best for her to ask her teacher for some assistance. Then again, with how low she was running on energy she would soon need to take a break; it was pointless to ask and then rest.

Even though she was getting tired, Amaya knew that she had at least another go in her. Taking in her breath and closing her eyes, the girl tried to latch on to her chakra. It wasn’t surprising when she was struggling or when she wasn’t able to meld her two energies together. This was difficult for the child, but she also adored the experience. While she did love her job at home, this was something her father didn’t have the knowledge to teach her about. If she had asked, he would have picked up a scroll and summarized, but that would never give her an understanding like she was developing in the classroom.

With another little rush of energy leaving her body, Amaya knew that she only had one more attempt left before she had to rest again. Since she had failed her last attempt, the child made sure to bring herself back into focus before her last one. For a few seconds, she stared at some of the grain lines in the table in front of her. There were some interesting color fades through the wood that Amaya was able to focus on while she blocked out all the movement, sounds, and distractions around her.

Content with her level of re-focus, Amaya decided to get a bit more comfortable by crossing her legs and tucking her feet under her thighs. She loved the sensation when she sat in that position long enough; her feet would go completely numb to the point that she couldn’t actually move her foot. Sure, it was a bit weird, but she loved watching her feet as she tried to walk like that. Then, when she would step, there would be tingling pin p***k sensations shooting up her leg. However, that wasn’t her intention at this point in time. No, she needed to focus on her chakra in order to make the best of her last attempt before a break. Taking in a deep breath, the girl found her chakra immediately; pulling and manipulating it. This attempt was almost easy in comparison to her last successes. In fact, this time there was the light glimmer of visible chakra glowing around the girl. Her eyes were shut, so she couldn’t actually see it, but she did notice the moving light pressing under her eyelids. It was a gentle blue with a distinct purple undertone, which seemed to match her quite well. However, Amaya finally felt her energy leaving her, so she released the chakra, more than happy with her attempt.

Yae backtracked farther and retrieved her discarded footwear. She turned it over in her hand, making sure it was still structurally sound. When it checked out she slipped it back over her bare foot, the dirt on her heel a mild annoyance now. With a graceless motion she brushed the dust off of her knees. With an impatient sigh she began jogging again, but the fall had left her sore, and now she was moving at a rate barely above a speedy walk. Each time she stepped down against the earth a nagging pain tugged at where here knee met the top of her tibia bone. The nice weather was offset by the pain of failure, and Yae actually missed performing ranged training in the blistering heat. At least then she had been able to go inside to escape the heat. There wasn't much she could do now to remedy the pain in her legs.

Yae jogged on, trying to ignore how each step sent a new wave of agony up her body. The problem was ignoring things wasn't exactly her forte. Her vision started to flash faintly white. The sandals suddenly felt like lead weights. The girl slowed down to stop with a low groan of utter discomfort. In order to stop obstructing the track she limped off to the side and laid down on the soft grass. One hand gingerly prodded at the knee cap while she watched a few stray clouds pass overhead.

"I hate this," she decided out loud with glum resignation. Ranged practice had been annoying, sure, but at least it hadn't hurt like this. Suddenly Yae missed the classroom, overtaken by a homesick sort of longing. Sure, it was right over there (she could see it if she tilted her head back). But she wouldn't return. Couldn't, until she finished training.
