"He was on his own. But like." he glared at the bricks. "Simon said.. It was meant to be safe." But Simon was smart, he could be lying, it was Allan's word he truly took at its face value. "But like, Allan said too. He said it had been checked by three divisions. It was meant to be a straight up easy mission."
He couldn't bring himself to mention the forgotten exit portal, just the thought of it made him hurt on various levels. His trust in the sun lead stood in direct conflict with the idea he'd do harm to anyone intentionally. "And I believe he thought that. Something ******** up went on there. It had to have."
The buzz of the exertion kept him going, hardly even aware of how many bricks he'd built up already.

Jerry, meanwhile, had settled to sweating on his own, quietly piling up bricks as he hummed quietly to himself. Mid-brick, he paused, glancing to Harrison, his voice weak, "Um... Harri... thank you. Um." He looked back to his work, wobbling a bit under the weight of the armor as he spread more mortar and popped another brick down, "For standing up for me. Before."

Rep might have muttered angrily to himself about how it seemed to be only the good ones they put down.
He took no small amount of anger out in diverting his energy to the wall, not giving a s**t if he pulled a muscle and feeling like the heat was just some outside manifestation of his anger.
"Obviously throwing a ******** wobbly was going to get him in trouble."

Jerry fell quiet as he concentrated on one brick he was certain was crooked. He drew in a sharp breath before releasing it slowly.
"Do you... do you guys really think... I mean... about... about J-jordan," His voice dropped down, wavering weakly.

Jerry let out a long, shuddering breath, nearly dropping his trowel. He concentrated on his breathing quietly, in and out, in and out, as he stacked the bricks.
He really was alone, now, wasn't he?
Not completely, Roar rumbled gently, but Jerry ignored him.

Rep shot Jerry a very chilly glare. There had been a tenuous truce in as far as discussion topics went, and as usual, the other man had bumbled right into a very tender spot. He was glad Harrison had replied, he'd have been more caustic in his response, he'd have been out to get a fight.
Instead he fought back the urge to lash out and focused on the wall.
"It might sound like bullshit. But." he didn't take his eyes off his work. "I don't want to say never. If they found something other than the phone. Maybe. But they didn't." It felt stupid and childish to admit it, that there was the faintest hope he clung to, that all his instincts rebelled against, that let him deny grief and defy collapse.
But he'd seen the famine hive at work, when they killed, it was messy. Blood splattered on a church floor. They'd found nothing but a phone.
Maybe he was delirious. It was hot. So hot. And even standing was growing difficult. This ******** armour weighed a ton.

The longer Jerry quietly stacked the bricks, the more the gravity of the situation sank in. His hands were trembling as he spread the mortar. They were outright shaking as he tried to put the bricks up one by one. Finally, one dropped to his sandaled feet, just barely missing crushing a toe.
He stared down, wobbling slightly.
These two men didn't care that Jordan's world branched out farther than just them. The man had always been there... as long as he had been on this island. All through their trials, he had kept Jerry and the other pheonixes safe. Had vouched for him, stood up for him, fought for him, protected him, guided him.
And no one had thought to...
No one cared to...
Jordan was gone.
Killzone was dead.
Wash and Sasha and even Rin....
Harrison and Rep at least had each other, to yell or cry or comfort... Who was he left with?
Numbly, he picked up the brick, mumbling weakly under his breath, "What would you do if I sang out of tune..."
Things had changed.

Harrison was soaked. He got the next bricks, keeping about even with Rep's pace out of a growingly cold fury.
"You saw that Sun camp," Harrison said. "They've been picking guys off. And then they came here."
His voice stayed clipped. Dry. He didn't trust himself to talk.

Harrison's comment all but temporarily shut down Rep for a few moments. He was right of course, but it left Rep feeling like his stability had been pulled away grasping for a few moments blindly for a way to deny it. Maybe they hadn't gotten Jordan, maybe he was still alive, maybe they needed him for something. A vision of Jordan puppeted by the things didn't help. Maybe they needed him for something else, something less horrible. He was getting further and further into the realm of the unbelievable.
And Jerry was singing. He recognised the song, it took him a while to pinpoint it. A beatles song. He remembered the words, his frown deepening as he couldn't get the song out of his head.
What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know it's ******** Jerry and his ******** songs. He reached to the helmet to run a hand through sweat soaked hair with a sigh
"Aye. Maybe. But I don't want to give up. I wouldn't want people to give up."
Movement nearby made him look over just as a good bit of their hard work was conquered.
He threw a brick at the little bastards.
"And I'm not going to yet."

Harrison was too dizzy to argue. The if it was me type comment just made him feel sick again.
"Mangy bastards."
He hadn't forgotten being smothered by a pack of the stupid things. Even if Jordan liked them. He rolled chunks of brick over, putting aside the bigger, useable ones.

Jerry simply fell quiet, wobbling a bit as the sweat made his hair stick to his face under his heavy helmet and continued to hum.
Jordan was missing. MIA. there was a military term for that. But he was smart, he was strong, he was resourceful.
He still needed to tell the Phoenixes.
Oh, dear lord, he'd have to face Robert.
He dropped the trowel.

Rep tried to keep going, but apparently there was a point where his body drew a line even if his mind did not. He picked up a brick only for a sudden and significant dizziness to come over him. He felt like he was going to throw up. For just a moment the sweltering heat felt cold.
He teetered and shook his head. "I need to sit down." Maybe not sleeping since zenquest had been a bad idea, maybe eating next to nothing had also been a bad idea, maybe the dragon had been bad as far as ideas went too.
All he knew as everything went surprisingly light surprisingly fast was that he had sat down without actually meaning to do it, the energy had just gone out of his legs. He was thirsty. The ground was nice.
