Following the patrol sounded incredibly risky to Mkazo. Firekin were famed fighters, and he had been born and raised a warrior, but they were few and the Nergui were many...and many of them fearsome killers themselves. One slip, and death or worse awaited them. It was madness. But...it was madness that promised a rich reward. Troop numbers could be incredibly valuable. One ear perked forward as Yoan returned.

"We can overwhelm one lion easy, Nergui or not...but there's not a damn thing saying he'll know much, or be willing to give up his pride for his son." His brow furrowed as he looked around at the others. "We'd better keep low and keep our voices down, but we should go after that patrol."

Despite the last minute holdouts, it was decided. And decided well, as far as Elcca was concerned.

While it was true, they might be able to use Miah as a bargaining chip- they had nothing to prove or make good on their word. "We couldn't offer Miah even if we wanted to. The regents and the wardens have him. There are still plenty in the pride who..." she paused, her eyes sweeping around for the boy's father. She kept her next words a bit lower out of respect. "-there are still plenty who think he is responsible for Nur'yu's death. We don't have any proof to the contrary, and I've seen the lion. If he helped the Hongshan escape, that was the last helpful act he's done. He's given no information on the Nergui, and he hasn't said any word to even contest that he was a spy."

She also had to wonder if Nergui had the same concepts of family. Just because he mourned his son, didn't mean he wanted him back. For all they knew, he considered his son dead because of his role in the escape. It was hard to think of the Godlum she remembered as being emotional about anything. Perhaps, it was only a coincidence the name was familiar.

"There is still the chance more might come to the tree," Yoan said. But even as he did, he settled down on Elcca's shoulder in defeat. She started walking towards the horizon, where they had last seen the group. Tracking them wasn't going to be too hard- the group had been large enough to bend a trail through the grass.

"Yeah, but we can't be sure of that. We can be sure there are lions ahead of us. Going somewhere," she sighed. This was the right path, but it didn't exactly thrill her either. "Hopefully the grass holds up and gives us straight cover. But just in case, we should probably let our darker friends take point."

Azulon laid his ears when Serkan prompted the vulture to vote. Since when did it get an opinion? It was a nuisance some fool had taken pity on. Fortunately, regardless of what the two said, they were on the move quickly enough and he was spared the need to point that out. He nodded at the suggestion that the darker lions around should go in the front, and slowed his pace slightly so Morag and Mkazo, and anyone else who was darker could pass.

Azulon stayed close to the front, being dark furred himself, but sported a very white maw. He pawed at it a couple times as he walked. It didn't really get too dirty, but it did darken a bit, and as such stood out. "Let's keep our voices low from here on out, and avoid talking unless you see something important." He said. There may not be an immediate need, but since they were taking the more dangerous path, some extra precaution might be smart.

It was decided, then. While it was troubling that this Miah was indeed the lion that had arrived with the last group of Hongshan, that was a pile of muck for another day. One...that they'd hopefully all live to see.

Besides, Elcca had a point. Miah belonged, more or less, to the Regents. They couldn't offer to give away what wasn't theirs.

Rolling his shoulders, Mkazo gave a quiet grunt and a nod before moving to the front. While he had a few touches of red to his coat, they were small and narrow where they weren't nearly as dark as the black that predominated his pelt. He nodded at Azulon. "Yes. Mouths shut, eyes and ears open."

He could only snort before falling into step behind Elcca. He quietly noted who all had a dark pelt and gave a tilt of his head. Speaking low, he walked up next to Elcca. "By point, Elcca mean.. In front, in back..?" There was a pause in his step, allowing the vulture to half jump, half climb onto his back. He fought a snarl at the tail pulling, but otherwise went back to moving. As his mind reeled over things, he suddenly realized something. They were in a very dark terrain, and some of them had very bright white bodies, markings, or manes. The frown on his face stretched. "Should find black mud, make us all darker... We all hide better..." On his back, the vulture remained quiet other than the ruffle of his feathers as he preened.

Aodhfin rolled his eyes at Serkan who tried to get the stupid bird to vote when it was nothing but a nuisance that should never have come along. " lets hope this risk gives us the reward we want." ears pinned flat to his head, he made sure to keep his voice low if he spoke, though he didn't really see it necessary to say anything more. and being so brightly colored with red, white and yellow on his coat, he stayed behind those who could blend better with dark coats. it didn't exactly make him happy to be taking such a big risk, but he felt it was the right call instead of waiting at some damn tree for someone to come along. he never did that well with not taking any action when he could do something instead of sitting around to wait.

Morag nodded as the vote came to a close, rising without a word to take point with the other dark coats. When she was younger she might have felt envy at the red coats of her family, but she had long grown out of that... and now it was even coming in useful.

Employing what skills she had learned as a huntress, the dark lioness slid into the grass with an easy motion, the kind of rolling step that covered distance by let the eye slide off the form, that got a hunter closer to prey quickly without scaring them off. She said nothing as her paws ate up the distance, her eye trained forward and her ears perked, alert for sounds out of the normal.

He moved in silence, Kooka becoming less and less thrilled and awake by the moment. The bird crawled beneath the pelt atop Mwako'damu's back and Mwako believed the bird asleep, for he did not stir, nor made any sudden movements.

It appeared as if their group choice was made, and he would watch carefully at those around him. Making close glances to the ground to where he stepped, keeping as low as possible.

They needed little noise, but still, so much information it seemed.

"Oh yay the bird gets a vote," She snapped rolling her eyes. "Because he's definately going to be the one fighting the Nergui if we get caught." She was starting to get impatient at this point. They were losing time and some one was asking the bird what he wanted. She didn't understand what was going on. She didn't understand at all really. It made her angry and frustrated her really. She just wanted to go and follow these guys and get done what they had came to get done so that she could go home to some where that was at least some what normal. She wanted to go on this trip but at the same time she was tired of all of the stopping and arguing. "Lets follow them." She insisted.

When they decided she felt relieved once again that they were going to start moving and going to where they needed to go next. That made her feel much better about the progress that they had made. She took a second before flicking her tail. She thought it would be better to be in the back, she was bright and she did not want to be a give away. She crouched low and started to wander slowly through the grasses, she was hoping that this was going to work well for them.

Nyimak was relieved when the votes were cast to follow the patrol. While it may have been safer to further investigate the tree, this was a high-risk endeavor. Travelling to these lands was not easy, and was not safe; the longer they remained, the higher a chance someone or something would stumble upon their trail. All they needed was another patrol to sweep the area and potentially pick up their tracks.

It could be over any minute.

With the group on the move, like Morag, Nyimak employed her skills as a huntress. Stealth was the name of the game when it came to hunting in the desert, and tracking was almost second nature. This would come in handy as they moved, keeping low to the ground and ever alert. Unlike hunting herdbeasts, this time there was a chance that they could very quickly become the hunted. They would absolutely have to be careful of where they moved, and hope luck and fortune would favor them.

The more information they had, the better. This was for Nur'yu, after all. She was risking herself to move among the lands. But she would wait no more. . . she might be but a civilian, but she was damned well going to do something for her pride. If spying on others was it, than so be it. At least she wasn't sitting idly back at home. At least she could say she was doing something for the Pride. . .Nyimak could only hope the information they discovered would be worth something. She did not want to call this trip a waste.

Slowly, quietly, moving low to the ground, the dark red lioness kept her flame orange eyes alert. Who knew where the small patrol group would take them. . . or what other Nergui might be heading their way?

Unfortunately, while the trip was dangerous...once you got to walking, the sheer monotony of it started to set in. An hour passed as the group followed the patrol's footsteps. In that time, the plains had seemingly expanded to all corners. Flat, grassy terrain with an odd shade of grey. North looked like south, east like west... Elcca was glad no one had gotten the idea to split too far off from one another. This was quite possibly the most boring section of northland she'd ever seen.

At least the rest had the decency to be spooky.

Up in the air, Yoan was drifting around some leagues off course from where they were. No other birds in the sky- but if they were watching, he occasionally lilted to a different direction to obscure their trekking.

It was starting to feel like desert 2.0, when suddenly, the grasses gave away to hard, slippery stone. It was a stream! The momentary excitement was short-lived. Anyone who got close to the water could smell that it was fouled. Fouled with a rank odor that smelt a lot like death.

Elcca scowled. "There's something upstream."

"Something dead." If Azulon were to make an educated guess. He wrinkled his nose and, after glancing to the sides, stepped a bit closer to the water. He could not see anything just yet, if they wanted to figure it out, they would have to go investigate. "We can go check it out." He said, turning back to the group (and stepping away from the water, back towards the grasses where he would be more visible).

"Or we can pick up the trail again." The fact that the grasses and bushes had given way to stone made it harder to track the patrol, especially with the foul-smelling water covering up their scent. "Whatever is fowling the water may be a waste of time." Even if it was a dead lion, and not simply some prey beast, there wasn't much to be learned from the dead. It would only be interesting if the whatever-it-was coincided with more Nergui. "But it may be that we will find Nergui upstream as well. They have to drink just like anyone else. Where is the crow, Yoan?" Could he see anything?

All in all, Azulon thought it might just be worth checking it out. Morbid curiosity, and the chance of finding some Nergui?

"I have a bad feeling about this... water doesn't smell like this. Dead things in water smell like this." Morag said softly, her voice a low growl. She took a step away from the water, her nose wrinkled, before she looked upstream, angling her head to see if there was anything in sight to attribute the smell to.

"We should probably check it out, but first, a thought occurs to me. We don't have a plan for the chance we get discovered... It would be a good thing to know our roles first, before we're suddenly forced to think on the fly. My suggestion would be to have the two or three fastest break away and head south with all the speed they can make... the rest of us can distract or hold off whatever it is that's found us, making our way south as we can manage it." She shifted on her paws as she glanced around at the others, her expression thoughtful. "Another way would be for the entire group to scatter in all directions, hopefully confusing the enemy and giving as many a chance to escape as possible, meeting up again by that marked tree we discovered on our way here."

She huffed softly, glancing back upstream. "I just have this feeling if we don't have even the bared bones of a plan, we're going to regret it..."

Saoiraed, who had been there the whole time, really, just quietly observing and trying not to get his bright white pelt spotted, did his best to hunker along with the others through the odd grass. He'd been all sorts of nervous and eager when the patrol came by, but he'd not been among those who'd overheard them. Similarly, he had opted not to cast his vote on going one way or the other. Instead he had been occupied with quietly discussing with Peri. The falcon would stand out, he considered, as he saw no other birds (that were not ravens, at least) in the air. Also it would be a waste of her skills if he kept her on the ground. So what was there to do?

They'de come to an agreement, and while the others talked, Saoi had mashed up some of the odd dark grass and rubbed it both into his own fur and the falcon's feathers. It wouldn't hide her clearly predatory build, but it would darken her enough maybe to pass muster if merely glanced at. The falcon took off, hopping out a ways from the lions on the ground before taking flight. No reason to give their exact location away. She would fly high, very high. High enough to make her seem smaller, perhaps, and Saoi had gone on with the others, slinking up to the foul water.

"Should we investigate? I can't imagine they drink from it." A dark thought occurred to him. "You think they put...whatever's fouling it...in on purpose? Make it so the only good water's in their better guarded lands? Or..."

He sniffed the water, before making a face. "Perhaps Nergui polluted water themselves, yes..." He backed away, though the vulture was more than happy to hop off and stay near the water. So be it. He edged away from the stream, not liking the stink. Serkan then looked in the direction the water was coming from. After a moment, he shook his head. "Vote we not investigate. Continue after patrol." He then looked to Morag. "Nergui may mark many tree, and we in strange land. Many lions get lost, split up like that may be bad idea. Do like buffalo, form ring with backs to the center, claws and teeth out, if caught, perhaps?"
