Combat 101

Another day, another sparring match. Frossa signed herself up for another one of the small tournaments held, that matched winners from the previous fights together and so on. The losers were required to run laps for the remainder of the tournament- Frossa wasn't sure why, or how that was combat training really, but she wasn't about to run around in circles like an idiot- let alone with a pack of sweaty lowbloods.

She mowed through her first two matches, but struggled against her third opponent. Frossa was up against an alarmingly muscular blueblood, who promptly tossed her out of the ring. The orangeblooded adult running the mini tournament seemed scrawny to her, and so Frossa chose to simply leave other than run laps.

MEDICINE 101

He'd had enough of survival, even though they'd just begun their stealth lessons. Medicine, Alifax felt, had a lot more of a direct benefit.

It was only unfortunate, of course, that he returned on the day that the instructor began talking about cauterizing wounds properly. Of course.

"Unfortunately," their instructor shrugged, "We've only managed to procure some hopbeasts for you in the way of live subjects - you'll be expected to amputate it and then cauterize it, and then I'll check it over to make sure that you're fine. Luckily they each have four legs, so you can each try your hand at it four times over if you fail! Isn't that lovely?"

There was silence. Alifax clutched his hopbeast to his chest - it was small, fit in his arms, and white like a lusus except for a blaze of black on its snout, and it had a little orange nose. Probably an orangeblood, then. It wiggled a lot, and kept trying to kick him. Clearly it knew its fate. (Fortunately, Alifax did have the ability to grip things, and to bear pain.)

"Try not to get them too messy, by the way - we're probably donating these to the kitchens when we're done. No need to waste perfectly good hopbeast meat, after all!"

Well, it wasn't the process that he minded, so much as that it struck incredibly close to him. Alifax didn't particularly care for hopbeasts, although he did realize that he'd have to immobilize it somehow before he amputated it. These things had really powerful hind legs! But he did care for burning things. The problem was that he had no idea how to do it without using his powers, and really? He'd prefer that the use of his powers be avoided at all costs while training. And those incendiary stems just looked untrustworthy - they were so small! They could hardly be trusted to start any respect-worthy fire.

...well, he had to learn someday. To blend in, or something. Anyway, he had best get started. He had four amputations to complete today, after all.

Medicine 101, take 5

After her embarrassment Abrila was rather reluctant to go back to the tent, but she wasn't in the mood to do anything physically taxing so it still seemed like the best option.

The class seemed to be working all together again. Abrila was just about to step into the makeshift room when a strange shrieking started up. Then, just as suddenly as it appeared, it cut off with a gurgle. Abrila, with one foot up in the air, quickly did a 180 degree turn and left. Well that was an... experience.

Instead, she snuck around the medical tents until she found a room piled with books and papers. It was such a mess, it felt like.... home. She didn't hesitate to make herself comfy in the room and started to flip through one of the books until sleep overtook her.

Survival 101

While it was true she still felt sore from all of this training Minist found that she wasn't as out of breath as she had been the first time. Her body was already started to work on muscle memory with all this jumping around. Tonight seemed to be just endurance training. Run around the track until you collapsed. She could handle that. Not the funnest thing in the world, but eventually she made a game of it by keeping track of how many trolls she passed as she kept her even pace. Not too fast to exhaust herself out quickly, but not too slow to gain attention for the overlooking soldiers. However this too began to get tiring as the muscles in her legs began to ache with each step. That familiar stitch in her side returned as she willed herself not to give up. Just one more lap. Come on, Minist. Just one more lap.

Medicine 101 take 2

Nelgan sighed, leaning against the scratchy rock wall of the cave. At least medicine didn't involve hardly any physical labor, but it was a strain to remember each ailment, and how to cure it. It was especially exhausting to work with all the knots. Sure, maybe someone would trip and fall and lose the use of their legs and have to be tied up, but to Nelgan that sounded very unlikely. But who was he to argue? So, his fingers got a little sore from working with all the rough rope, but it could've been much worse.

Nelgan frowned slightly at the sight of blood, but it didn't ever bother him that much. He was counting on his teammates to, well, not die, but he was counting even more on himself. He'd managed to stay alive this long, and it wouldn't be hard to keep going. And maybe, just maybe, these medicine shenanigans would help him in that ultimate goal.

Combat 101

Pyruet felt patronized.

Because it was her first combat lesson, she'd been directed towards a different set of instructors, along with all the other first timers. Instructors who were there to teach you about your weapons; safety precautions, proper form, and the like.

All things that Pyre'd had drilled into her since she'd gained opposable thumbs. She knew how to use a gun, damn it, it was senseless to waste a lesson on this nonsense, but nevertheless, they spent an hour going over the basics and were sent back to their respiteblocks.

With a sigh, the still bed-ridden troll set the text book aside to stare up miserably at the ceiling. Studying was not going anywhere tonight.

Medicine 101

Cheese decided to return to the medicine tent yet again for another exciting lesson on outdated technology. She could not comprehend why she needed to know about all this old crap when troll technology had rendered it completely obsolete. She was probably missing the point.

The focus this evening was what to do if your assortment of herbs, mosses, and fungi failed to stop massive hemorrhaging. This instructor seemed to be rather hung up on the "bleeding" thing. She presented her pupils with a jar full of leeches and directed them each to take one and stick it onto a dead nosebeast in the center of the room.

Wait a second, weren't leeches supposed to keep blood flowing? Cheese stared at the instructor and wondered if she was a quack, but obeyed her instructions nonetheless.

Survival

Back to the good ol' survival class. Sarcel, now patched up well enough from her... incident from the prior day, was ready to try and continue this course! Sir was without her again today; to be honest, it was weird not to be around his always judgmental, looming figure. Not that she missed it or anything! But he drove away her biggest fear; confrontation. Or at least he did most of the time, when he wasn't instigating it.

But she needed a break since the whole stabbing box incident. Staring up the wall, she saw other trolls scaling the face, and her eyes widened. She could run hella fast, but climb? She lacked upper body strength, or at least it wasn't one of her assets, not at all. She didn't think she could climb the wall, even if she was running for her life, and the wall served as the only beacon of protection for miles. Yep, wasn't happening.

Instead she settled for watching. Seeing other trolls fall, and watching others scale effortlessly. She was learning from afar! Or that was the intention. Actually there wasn't much to see anyway, just trolls climbing.

Oh well, she wasn't capable of climbing, so why bother? Hardly anything learned, she sighs and heads back for the main part of camp.

Maihue walked in and sat down. She stared towards the front again, and the instructor actually, it was weird. The instructor just started talking. Maihue listened carefully.

"Alright, today is simple. Take out your books..." The instructor laughed loudly, making Maihue jump. She was not expecting that.
"Take out your books. Silly me." The instructor laughed, and walked over to a skull, slowly stroking it. He was so strange...
"Go grab a book off of my desk. Read Chapter 1-6. That should be easy enough. Then bring them off with you and memorize the important parts. Now, shoo, shoo, be off with you. Go read so I can do important things." The instructor left quickly through the back.

Maihue got up slowly and headed towards the desk. She grabbed a book and went back to sit down. She opened it up, and all she could see was words forever. She stared off into a sea of words. Why was everything with Medicine so strange?

Combat 101

Frossa returned to combat training, eager to learn more. Even the boring classes seemed to have a bit of merit to them! While the primarily lecture based classes were a struggle for Frossa to stay alert in compared to the more physical ones, they did indeed provide some technical aspects the highblood so deeply needed to hone. Taking few poorly scrawled notes, (at least she was taking notes, wow Hazzan would have been impressed), Frossa decided to give her small body a rest for the day and stick with some technical stuff.

MEDICINE 101

There was, Alifax decided, an awful lot of chemicals relevant to the arts of medicine. Unfortunately, they were all pretty flammable. (It wasn't as though they knew about his powers, he reminded himself. And he preferred it that way!) The majority of them also looked really expensive - honestly, he couldn't see himself using or obtaining any of these outside of the military. He cleared his throat. "Um, a question?"

"Make it snappy, recruit."

"That is...what should we do if we're out in the field and we don't have these at hand?" He gestured wildly at the assortment of bottles before them. Would those pills go down with grubsauce? He didn't know; he had never had much in the way of pills before.

"Sit around and wait to die, of course - or you can wait around for the herbs lesson that's scheduled in a couple days." The instructor winked at him. "I like your spunk."

"Ah. Uh."

Combat 101

Oh good, it was time for some other kind of torture. She had meant to go back to survival training, but instead she found herself in the combat area instead. Apparently it didn't take her long to get disoriented among all the portable respiteblocks. She couldn't actually remember where hers was, either. Days without sopor were starting to get to her, so she would have to find it soon.

The course seemed to be about reading your opponent's body language, but Abrila was having trouble focusing. She leaned against her shovel as her eyes drooped with sleepiness, things in front of her slowly blurring together in a mess of indistinct colour and movement.

"And when you opponent shows weakness... YOU STRIKE!"

Abrila jumped in surprise and practically threw her shovel away when the tip of a very sharp and pointy rapier was suddenly right in front of her sniffnode.

"Pay attention, soldier!" the instructor reprimanded, refusing to remove the weapon from Abrila's face. The orangeblood mumbled apology after apology until the instructor was finally satisfied enough to withdraw the weapon. But that wasn't the end of it for Abrila.

"Come here, soldier. You will be our first volunteer."

Yeah, it was going to be a long night.
