Seth listened silently to the morning announcements, only raising an eyebrow at the principal's overly enthusiastic voice on the overhead speaker. Vaguely, Seth wondered just how much of his opening speech was written on paper, and which was ad-lib. It would've been understandable both ways. The principal was known to be a rambler at times, and he was one for long essays. It didn't surprise him that for the first day of school, the principal would go just a bit over the top. Just a bit.

As he finished up, the door opened, and Oliver entered, fashionably late. He flashed a charming smile at the teacher and apologized for his lateness, then hurried to a seat next to Ledell. The guy probably just didn't want to get out of bed this morning, he was so laid-back. Seth considered doing that very thing that morning. It wasn't as if he disliked school - truthfully, he didn't dislike it all that much - but he never liked the first day all that much. There was always a lot of confusion as friends hurried to find their groups from the previous year, and freshman ran around trying to find a place to be. Mostly the freshman.

When the announcements finished, the teacher launched into introductions and their customary first-day-of-the-year lecture. Seth immediately drifted off. It wasn't like the teacher was boring, or had one of those dead, drawling voices, but he'd heard similar lectures for the past eleven years or so, and he was going to hear it a number more times as the day progressed. He wasn't interested.

He was surprised to find, though, that his thoughts drifted to the female freshman in the hallway earlier. The memory was fresh and clear in his mind - she was fresh and clear in his mind. Her soft, wavy locks, her petite, almost elfish face, and her smile. It was a smile that could bring the sun out on a cloudy day. Which would suck for him. He liked cloudy days.

Brianna raised an eyebrow as Donald sat next to her and began to flirt. Before he got too presumptuous, though, class started. Once introductions were finished, and the lecture got under way, she was surprised to receive a note from him. Smoothly, she slid it into her notebook before the teacher saw it and read it.

What are you doing after school today?

It was written in a slanting scrawl, and she glanced sideways at him to see him grinning at her. Brianna rolled her eyes and wrote in her broad, neat handwriting, Not you. Go hit on somebody else if English is too boring for you. I'm trying to pay attention.

She slid it out of her notebook enough for him to see it just as the teacher turned back around.

"Well, looks like you two lovebirds want some alone time in detention. See me after class, Brianna, Donald, and quit writing love letters to each other."

The class laughed, and a couple of the other students made those stupid "ooo" noises. Brianna went bright red and ducked her head, ears and cheeks flaming. What the hell? She'd been telling that jackass off, not writing some stupid love note. A conviction grew in her chest that English was not going to go well for her this year.

Class was soon over, and she put everything back in her bag before casually slinging it up over one shoulder and heading to the teacher's desk. He handed her and Donald detention slips for after class, then shooed them off. Once they were out of the classroom, Brianna immediately punched Donald in the shoulder.

"Thanks for getting me detention, you jerk." Her voice dripped with sarcasm.

User ImageIt was nothing new for him to get detention, for him to actually go? Pfft! You'd have a better time trying to beat a Lamborghini Diablo with a Geo Metro. He shrugged off the catcalls of the other students and beamed through the rest of the class. He took his detention slip and once they were out the doors and Brianna had punched him, he tore it up and dropped in the trash bin. "Hey, hey, hey! We wouldn't be in this predicament if you had been more smooth about it, beautiful. And why not me? I can show you a better time than most of the other idiots around this place." He made a step toward her so he could lower his voice. "It's not like I was asking you to skip class. So, what do you say? What are you doing after school?"

She frowned as Donald ripped up the detention slip. It wasn't like she was going to tell on him or anything lame like that, but it pissed her off that he was going to ignore his punishment when she had every intention of at least showing up even though she'd done nothing wrong. Once she got there, she might be able to talk her way back out, and even if she couldn't, she'd be able to get most of her homework done before being faced with the problem of her persnickety car.

When Donald stepped closer, trying to convince her into hanging out with him after school, she snorted. "No thanks. Not that I don't appreciate the offer, but I'm not in the least interested in you, Dionysus."

She stopped abruptly. Where had that name come from? It had just slipped out, replacing Donald's real name. Brianna didn't even know what that name was from.

User ImageMore than the fact that she didn't find him interesting, she had called him something. A name that he had heard a long time ago, like, something Greek. A faraway look came over his face, one of perplexity and contemplative wonder. His voice grew even softer, trance-like as he spoke. "Yeah . . ." he set his hand on her shoulder, nodded and walked off as if he were unsure of where he was or what he was doing.
