The smell was filed away as Important, and Dinahsk whsped as she trotted along to keep pace with Nyossk's longer legs, searching for any other potentially important smells, or perhaps a glimpse of something in the dark, or the return of the strange noise. Something, someone, where were they?
"I know, right?" Dinah smiled a little in return. Up front, they could practically ignore the riders. "Regular practice'll be boring after this."

Kinra was furious "They're not going to get away ... not again" she snapped, following directly behind F'itz, yes she was being reckless... but she couldn't stand not knowing if someone was coming for her or not, so many sleepless nights had her nerves on edge and now she was getting angry at the situation, she felt helpless and vulnerable and she didn't like it.. not unless she was faking it to get something she wanted. She tried to move past him when he looked out of the window. "If we don't move now we're going to lose them.... no time to look out of windows.. get the whers to search the dark, call the dragons or something " she said, her voice only slightly higher pitched than it's usual tone.
From her weyr Suunath bugled loudly, sensing Brumath was watching the group she turned on him, "If mine gets hurt i am holding you and Yours responsible Brumath" she snapped before turning her attention to her rider Where do you think you're going? Brumath's is older and bigger than you Kindramine, let HIM get hurt by rushing in..... stay where you are and let them deal with it" she commanded.
Kindra was going to do nothing of the sort, she was going to deal with this....this....person... once and for all, she held her knife out in front of her slightly and began to make her way forwards, having stopped to listen to Suunath's tirade at her.
In her Weyr Suunath was furious and had begun to make her way to find Hers and drag her back if need be.

Nyosh chuckled. “Well if they ever get too droning, you come see me. Nyossk and I will take you on a patrol. I can’t guarantee it’ll be any better than a practice though.”
She was a bit surprised when someone noticed that they were nearly at the Weyr entrance. That probably didn’t bode well for whoever they were following. Nyosh was determined to follow them out of the weyr if she had to. Nyossk slowed her pace just slightly after a glance at Dinahsk.

Watch Suunath's, Mine, Stromath remarked as they moved along. She is behaving rashly and may come to bring herself harm.
K'en responded with a faint and silent nod. Agreed. She'd been behaving oddly all evening, but now the stress truly seemed to be shining through... and he honestly didn't like the way she held onto that knife. Discreetly he tried to keep himself placed in front of her as they moved, namely to be able to stop her should she suddenly go on the attack. ... Also hopefully with another body in front of her she might put down that knife before accidentally running him through with it. Maybe.
Stromath was not so content to take that chance. Kindra, I would appreciate it if you would keep your knife sheathed until it is needed. Moving in the dark like this anyone could easily fall and be hurt by it. ... Or during a sudden stop, perhaps. The latter remark being a very nice hint of "don't stab my rider". He was not pleased overall with the levels of control that she had shown thus far, and would be even less so should anything become of her poor restraint.

She stuck more towards the back of the group now, not wanting to bump into anymore people or be close to Kindra. The goldrider worried her. What if she fully broke and lashed out at one of them? Her nerves seemed to be running on extra high right now. Dezima was at least glad that K'en hadn't snapped at her for bumping into him.
We shouldn't get too far behind, Dezimine. Microth trailed along beside her person, eyes flickering from person to dragon to person again. She was unsettled by the tunnelsnakes and the danger Dezima might be in. I do not like that we have not seen anything of whatever we follow. Only hear it. And see what it has done.
Microth was right, and she did quicken her pace slightly to make sure they still continued to be 'part of the group'. Just one of the ones in the back. It also gave her the chance to look around the hall while they all trooped along. Just in case they missed something.
Wow. Were they really getting close to Benden's entrance? She didn't know whether to feel good or grim about this.

Brumath replied evenly, unruffled by the gold’s words.
F’tiz, who was already moving, sighed slightly as Brumath passed on the gold’s snapping to him. Looking down at Kindra, who was hastening along beside him, F’tiz pursed his lips. “I have told you several times to be careful with yourself,” he said firmly, “I appreciate your passion as I sure we all do, but please try to remember what I’ve told you.” She wasn’t really listening to him, that much was obvious, and so the brownrider stretched out his stride feeling rather thankful for his long legs.
Brumath sent a feeling of assent to his rider before turning his attention to the pair of young bronzes. He did not wish to think that somebody like that might one day lead, and yet did not little saplings grow into mighty trees given time? She could very well mature into something great. he added to his rider,
< Brumath? Hush.>

"But -" Brynja had protested, briefly, before realising that maybe N'mol was right. Maybe they had hurt someone else. It hadn't even really occurred to her, but in combination with the recent murder... oh dear.
Brynja and Larth were quiet now, the pair of them on high alert at the left of the group, watching the shadows. Neither quite knew their way around the weyr yet - Brynja managed to get lost on a daily basis if left to her own devices - and it had come as quite a surprise when they'd passed the weyrbowl. After a moment, they dropped back to the rear of the group besides Dezima and Microth, Brynja not liking the way Kindra was behaving at all and wanting to be way out of her way.

((I apologize, my lovely ladies and gentlemen, for not getting a clue up last night. I didn't get home until lateish, and I need to leave now for an orientation things. However, behold! Your clue!
Oh, also, you can all roll another d100. XD))
Before the group began their headlong rush after the fleeing intruder, another moan swelled down the corridors, but as everyone was in a panic to get moving, it was overlooked by all.
However, when the group was forced to stop a second time in order to determine which hallway to turn down, F'itz's place ahead of all party members but the whers noticed that when the moan sounded again-- short, quiet-- there was no scraping sound accompanying it. The sound Kindra and Dezima had heard earlier appeared to have stopped.
N'mol nodded as Tyeth relayed Brumath's message and glanced at Kindra. She was going to be a problem if she didn't shape up. Was it all fear doing that, maybe? He'd have to meet her again, outside of such complicated circumstances, in order to get a better idea of her nature. Fear often made people do drastic things. And throwing herself to the front of the group was certainly drastic. Part of that could be blamed on her not being weyrborn; outsiders becoming Queens often thought that riding Gold meant they could do whatever that want and boss around whoever they wished. They never seemed to realize their position was one of responsibility. They spent more of their time appeasing others than themselves-- if they were good Weyrwomen, anyway.

"I think she'd like that." After saying so, Dinah went silent, unable to help but notice the older rider scold the goldrider. Good! Faranth, she was happier than ever she hadn't been a Candidate - if she'd had to live with that girl for any length of time, there would have been problems.
Sound again? Dinahsk chrred and lashed her tail.

Kindra blinked, she hadn't planned to rush ahead and be alone, just making sure she was in a position to deal with whatever it was she wanted to deal with ... first. She hadn't expected K'en's dragon to bespeak her though, and her eyes flickered to the blade held out as it was and she realised how dangerous it could be if she tripped or bumped one of her fellows and her eyes went wide. "I.....i'm sorry..... but if whoever that is killed Kestril ..... they can't get away... not again" she mumbled, putting the blade away in her pocket, leaving her hand on it though. She nodded to F'itz and hung back, ashamed she had possibly risked Suunath by charging forwards like she had. She was still angry and frightened but her sleep deprived mind allowed her to see her mistake and learn a little from it. She gave K'en an apologetic look and hung back a little, still keeping towards the front of the group so that she was among the first to uncover whoever was moaning. If it WAS a weyrbrat pranking them then while she wouldn't use her knife, her hand could deliver quite a slap if she needed to.

I will pass along your message, Stromath replied to the older brown, despite the fact that they were already doing just that. Mine, Brumath requests that you have great caution in protecting Sunnath's. She does not see the danger that she creates for herself, her partner, and the Weyr at large.
Isn't that what we're already doing? K'en replied back, glancing only briefly at his dragon. Really he was loathe to let anyone in the group get hurt, but obviously the protection one of Benden's only two goldriders was imperative.
Yes. Nevertheless, it was requested to be passed along.
K'en found it rather curious that Kindra assumed this person to be the same one who murdered their Weyrwoman though. Would someone who committed that sort of crime really be so foolish as to return to the Weyr where everyone wanted his blood? And to be making suck a ruckus at that? ... Somehow, he doubted it.
It wasn't long before they came to another split path, and it was at this point that K'en was beginning to become slightly frustrated with the maze of tunnels that composed their Weyr. Sure, it'd provided great fun and many an adventure while growing up, but it made trying to track someone down nigh impossible. Also, was it just him, or was the moaning getting a bit quieter now? He didn't notice, however, the absence of the earlier scraping sound.

Brynja and Larth paused at the back of the group, the young weyrling standing on her tiptoes to get a look at over other's shoulders at what was going on and had caused them to pause. Yet another split tunnel? This place was a worse maze then she'd thought, and - as stated previously - she already got lost in normal circumstances, let alone when they weren't trying to track down someone she had now determined was definitely hurt and in need of help, no matter what the others seemed to think.
"Which way is that coming from?" she asked, rocking back on her heels, one hand now resting comfortably again on Larth's side.
She could see the whole story, definitely - someone was attacked by tunnelsnakes, there was a horrible battle, they left to seek aid, and then got lost in the maze of tunnels and might be on their last legs even now! It had all the dramatic tension going for it she could think of, and definitely meant they should hurry.

At the low moan reached his ears again F'itz paused, tightening his hand on the knife. "No scraping," he muttered, "does that mean it was this knife being scraped along, or has it just stopped?... This way, I think." Be decisive. F'itz had never been the charismatic sort who naturally drew people after him, had never cared to be a leader in any case, but in this instance as the most senior individual present it seemed to him that it was his duty. As he knew no other way he led by example and set off down the corridor.
"Don't apologise," he added to Kindra after a few moments, "I understand your feelings; if that is a criminal none of us want them to escape.... We only learn wisdom and restraint with practice. Nobody is born knowing the right thing to do in every situation." Certainly he'd been more restrained and cautious than her at that age but he had needed to learn different things, more when it was time to take action than when it was time to step back from it.

((Things are going more quickly now! Everyone roll another d100!))
F'itz's choice turned out to be the correct hallway after all, but not in the way everyone thought.
As the group trekked on, feet making a tumbling beat as they hurried down the hall, Brynja's rubbernecking paid off, as did her position at the back of the pack. The glows-- shuttered though they were to provide relief for the nocturnal whers-- glinted off a liquid on the floor that the others, focused ahead on the main hallway and catching up to the moaner, had missed.
The dark patch of liquid was small, but the smear leading away from the it was incriminating in and of itself. No one would have to get close to jump to the conclusion that it was blood, and when they all stopped to get a closer look-- and let the whers have the chance to tell it was most definitely human in origin-- that theory would be confirmed and set fire to the darkest imaginings of what had caused a human to lose enough blood to make a smear of that size.
As they stood, paused over this sign that the person had definitely turned down this hallway, a moan-- again loud and wailing like the initial moan rather than soft like the more recent ones-- pierced the silence.

When Brynja stopped F'itz doubled back quickly to see what the fuss was about. Blood. It was about blood. A lot of blood. F'itz's grip on hide knife tightened so much that his knuckles whitened. He stared at the pool in silence for some moments before the moaning came again and, cursing internally, he set off once more. Whatever was up ahead needed to be found now.
