Nuala Hard drive is dead again as of yesterday. Back to library 'net access only. Please please let me help out on fixing up your computer...you have worse luck than my friend and he has dreadful luck. I so want to build you a new station or send you up a drive or two...or help you get a raid mirror set up...

Nuala "Unknown Hard Error". That's all I know. Thoroughly unhelpful of it. Couldn't be something as simple as a loose cable, could it?

Thanks, Chris.
It seems that the PC will cost 220GBP (approximately US$420) to repair, so I could be in this semi-lurk mode for a while.

Hrm....
You do realise I could probably help make you something pretty good as a new pc for that price...perhaps morer powerful and or fault tolerant too.
If you want I can look into prices for you. I'm ging to be building a pc for my sister and her partner shortly.

Surely a new Hard Drive (if that is in fact the problem) would be cheaper?

Well, yeah, if it is the hard drive then its a very cheap fix.
A 40 gig hard drive is £25 for a Western Digital. I've never had any problems with them.
You could easily get larger ones.
From there I would reccomend getting two of them and a RAID controller card.
You can then either combine the two into one larger faster drive or have one drive maintain a mirror copy of the other so if one suffers a mechanical fault, you still have the other. Then you just buy a new hard drive and copy it back on over and off you go again.

It wasn't just the hard drive - it needed a new drive, new network card, new motherboard, new CPU and new fan.
At least I'm apparently getting an upgrade with the rebuild.
