One more shot. The figure was still wavering, the impact of so many bullets causing it to weave on its feet; the kick of the gun and the movement of the creature combined to send his shot wild again. Jordan shook his head, frowning. If he was going to be using a gun with any regularity, he'd need practice. A lot of practice, he suspected. Actually, whether or not he'd be using one regularly, practice was probably a good idea; relying too hard on any one weapon might be a risk.

He still felt the lack of his own sharply. He'd find it, he was certain of that, but when?

Caitlyn jogged to catch up with the quickly disappearing figure of their mentor. She stopped to stare for a moment at the bright colours of the beach resort, but froze at the sight of the gun. What the-? Caitlyn listened intently while beads of sweat sprouted on her brow.

BANG!

Caitlyn jumped. Whatever she’d been expecting, it certainly wasn’t for the instructor to fire the gun. She gulped and picked one up for herself, gripping it tightly to keep her fingers from trembling. The air seemed to shimmer and an old crone appeared.

BANG!

Caitlyn jumped again. The old woman went flying, body parts shattering from the blow. Caitlyn clamped her eyes shut. It was all too much! No one had said anything about killing old ladies. No one talked about dismembering defenceless humans.

And yet ... something caused Caitlyn to pry her eyes open. It must have been the scraping of the woman’s injured leg, dragging purposefully across the floor. Whatever it was chilled Caitlyn to the bone. This woman wasn’t human. She was some sort of monster!

Soon enough the air was full of bullets. Her fellow trainees were firing at the creature one right after the other, some finding time to chat between hits. Caitlyn clumsily loaded her gun with shaking fingers, aimed, and fired.

BANG!

"Oof!" Caitlyn grunted from the recoil and glanced up at her target.

And she'd hit! The bullet struck the figure, one more hole among a veritable sea of them.

Caitlyn breathed. She could do this.

Madison had felt distinctly out of her league during the helicopter ride, gripping onto her seat with white-knuckled hands. The best she could hope for was not to throw up or scream. She managed that, at least... though little else. When they were ushered out, she was wobbly on her feet, her face pale as she fought down her churning stomach. She did her best to listen to Caelius, though the nausea and after-effects of the adrenaline rush both tried to split her attention.

The appearance of the bizarre creature didn't help matters at all. Her first urge was to run... but her second urge was to get mad, anger flaring up through her discomfiture, dispelling the weak, oogy feeling left behind after the helicopter ride. She was here, she'd been chosen... things were not going to go the same way here as they did at home.

Here, at least, she had a weapon... and, even if she hadn't had one, she was still determined to fight. The gun felt strange in her hand; the only remotely similar weapon she'd ever used was a squirt gun in childhood. The two weren't even comparable. Madison took a deep breath and squared her shoulders, bringing up the gun and aiming, trying to execute everything Caelius had mentioned all at once.

Her grip was slightly off; the gun stung her fingers with the recoil, and she jumped powerfully at the explosive crack of the gunshot. Still, she saw the creature flinch close enough after her shot to assume that... she'd done that. She'd hurt it.

She'd attacked, and not failed.

A grim smile spread across her face. She wasn't beaten yet.

Cassandra settled in with her gun, taking care to look it over while the others shot at the creature. It was a curious device and she had to take the time to make sure she knew what it looked like, how things worked...

She nearly backed herself right back up against the helicopter in her attempt to move out of the way, laughing a bit as she looked down to her gun, moving her finger away from the trigger carefully as she looked into the chamber, keeping the barrel pointed as far away from everybody else as possible.

How many bullets were in it anyways?

Cass had seen guns so many times on TV, but now that she actually had one in her hand she fumbled over it dumbly, making a slight face..or rather a very frustrated face, nearly throwing the gun out of anger before she caught it again.

dfjlaksdf.

Worst idea ever, why had she been possessed to think throwing it away would solve her problem?

Either way, she crinkled her nose and resumed her investigating.

Ennéa yawned and then shifted her supply pack in order to stretch as high as she could, arms extended, standing on her tip-toes and looking up at the wide blue sky. "Ahh~" she exhaled, feeling more awake. She then skipped along the dunes, hurrying after her fellow hunters.

She had fallen asleep early on in the helicopter ride, suddenly exhausted after all the excitement and high emotions of awakening from her pod and reuniting with her old squad. Apparently it was an 'exciting' flight but she had missed most of it.

Ennéa pouted a little. Her first helicopter ride and she barely remembered any of it. It was kind of unfair. She had always liked rollercoasters; it was fun feeling that sudden gut-twisty floaty feeling, like the bottom had suddenly fallen out of the world.

Still, she supposed, she shouldn't be too surprised, even without all the craziness that had been happening to her lately, she probably would have fallen asleep anyway -- she always did on long car trips despite her best efforts not to.

Ennéa paused in her mental rankings of all the rollercoasters she had ever ridden in order to pay attention to Caelius. She dutifully picked up a gun from the pile and examined it, trying to remember all of the Hunter's instructions.

Her mother had owned a gun; she had bought it shortly after they had all moved to that apartment down on the eastern side of the city where the buildings looked all tired and the drunks in the alleyway sometimes shouted and bawled into the late hours of the night. Her mother claimed it was for their protection but she had always kept it in a locked strong box in the coat closet and Ennéa had never seen it again outside of the box.

It was odd to be holding a gun now. Kind of neat though. She was never allowed to even so much as touch the strong box.

Ennéa pointed her gun at the shambling figure. "Bang." she said.

And accidentally pulled the trigger.

The gun went off with a loud crack startling her and making the shot go wide. "Ack!" Ennéa yelped. She nearly dropped the gun.

Guns. Robert's manly-senses were tingly with anticipation. He was one of the first to pick up a gun, but one of the last to shoot - if only because the sight of the thing, whatever it was, that they were targeting, took his breath away. He watched it getting shot, time and time again, and the cold fear that was sluicing through his veins slowly began to ebb.

"Hunters." He breathed out, sounding a touch impressed. "Yeah." He checked the magazine on his gun, before slamming it back in, taking the safety off, and aiming it at the figure.

"Bang." He whispered, a moment before firing the gun directly at the head of whatever was coming at them.

The shot went lower than he'd expected, and sunk into the figure's arm instead. Robert lowered the gun and made a face, unhappy with the result.

Madison shifted her stance a little bit, trying to be more confident... and less worried about the noise. She'd never been fond of sudden sharp noises, and the crack of gunfire all around made her jump a little bit every time - but she was here, with her squadmates.

And she was damn well going to figure out how to do this.

"Try... try taking, like, a little more time to aim?" she said, hesitantly, addressing the pink-haired girl to her left. Ennea, she remembered - A-Nine. It was still odd trying to think of her squadmates as names instead of the numbers she'd learned first. A-Seven - Robert - was firing now too, and she nodded at him as well before taking a deep breath and resuming a firing stance.

She took her own advice, taking a moment to line up her shot, aiming at the monster's chest. Not gonna jump, not gonna flinch, not gonna-

Madison flinched anyway as she squeezed the trigger and the gun leapt back into her hands, but she handled the recoil much better this time - and she saw her shot crack into the monster's chest, almost exactly where she'd aimed for.

Badass.

It was time to learn to aim. He could do this, he convinced himself. All he had to do was shoot a little higher, a little more to the left. One eye closed as he aimed the gun indirectly, based on where the last shot had hit. His lips parted, and his teeth bit down on the tip of his tongue in a gesture of complete idiotic concentration so intense, it would be hard to laugh if one was looking firectly at him.

The shot went wide, right past the creatures shoulder, where he'd been aiming all along. Robert's eyed opened and he made a sour face. "What the ********? That's some bullshit."

Determined not to look like a fool, despite already failing, Robert decided aim was for pussies. He dropped one hand, and turned the other until the gun was held sideways.

"Time for the kill shot."

More like the fail shot. The bullet sailed so far off of it's course, that Robert visibly winced his entire body as he waited in dread to see if it hit someone else.

It didn't.

"Huh?" Ennéa turned, to look at the slightly older girl who was talking to her.

And accidentally set her gun off again, firing the bullet down into the ground a couple paces away.

Ennéa winced and looked guiltily at the other girl. Madison. She remembered. Somehow it was worse screwing up in front of her fellow Phoenix squad member. "S-sorry!" she said.

She bit her lip. No wonder she was never allowed to touch that strong-box back at home.

Madison flinched as Ennea accidentally fired her gun - and very nearly squeezed off a round herself as her fingers clenched inward. "I-It's, like, it's okay," she said, hurriedly. "Just don't, like, point that thing at anything that's not a monster, 'kay?"

She pivoted and aimed, then fired her own gun once more - but in her tension, she pulled to the side when the gun fired, sending the shot wide (though, in her defense, it didn't go anywhere near any of the humans!). Okay, that hadn't been too impressive... but she'd done generally okay, right?

Right?

She had purposely walked a few paces behind the others as they followed after the hunter whom had now identified himself to be their first teacher on their first impromptu mission. Even Robert she'd let past, watching both Alpha Two (M...adison?) and the girl with the violet hair pass before following close behind, listening quietly to any chatter. There wasn't much, at first -- most seemed to be spending most of their time catching up with Caelius, whom apparently had little patience for trainees. Briefly, as her feet sunk a little into the soft, bright sand, Petra wondered how many trainees they'd already had pass through here and, affording only a few seconds longer than the first thought, how many they had lost. She couldn't speak for anyone else, but the truth was she had gotten very little information before she had signed up -- a spur of the moment decision that might cost her her life, now -- and their little 'information meeting' had provided only the bare basics. They'd assigned them a dorm, given them a space of their own, however small and bare, but that meant very little when they hadn't brought much with them to begin with. An arm brushed over the small desk they had been provided and their entire current lives could be swept into a shoebox. She walked past the little beach side building without a thought vacation or home.

Caelius had begun talking by the time she had slowed to a stop at the outskirts of the group, spreading herself out to one side to afford the others some more personal space. Even with those few moments of speech lost, however, it wasn't hard to pick up the general idea. Petra watched the demonstration with a calculating gaze, eyes that reflected the color of the ocean they had just left shifting each time his hand moved, listening to the click of the gun with interest. At the first sounds of something inhuman moving nearby, however, her interest quickly faded, attention diverted from the man in white. There was an almost tangible change among the group as the got their first glimpse at the wraith-like figure, although at this point Petra had completely lost interest in seeing how they reacted. She was too busy staring at the crone that reminded her far too much of the Fates, strings of life held taut in wrinkled fingers, the metallic sound of scissors opening and closing unpleasantly.

She was so busy staring, in fact, she didn't notice Caelius aim until the first gunshot sounded in her ears, her startled scream thankfully drowned out by the sound.

At this point, she jerked a little to watch as he nudged the guns in their direction, moving forward cautiously to pick one up, as if it might go off as she reached her hand down to remove it from amidst the tattered material. She'd seen a gun before, of course -- living in a city before this, there was the occasional flash of something dark and foreboding beneath mysterious jackets and shoved in the pants of a boy whose pants were practically at their knees (although it was far more common to see them on police officers) -- but she'd never seen one this close before. Holding it in her hand, she turned it over slowly, feeling a sickening little knot of fear rise in her throat just from the weight of it, shoving it down quickly, before anyone saw, looking around for a second as if they might have. They were too busy shooting themselves... some of them were doing quite well, hitting dead on to snap the elderly hag's body backward again and again, wounding what seemed to be an enemy that wouldn't die. Still, she hung back a little.

This was what she had wanted, right? To be able to fight back, to be in control against an enemy no one else could see, but was very very real?

Then why was she hesitating?

Lifting the gun, Petra pressed the button as the Reaper had instructed, sliding a new cartridge back inside with an audible click before lifting it completely, straightening her arms. She knew nothing of guns, but what she had just been told, but she could see the hag along the barrel, moving so slowly it could hardly be considered a moving target. In her mind, she went over what Caelius had said, repeating the words.

Release magazine. Reload magazine. Safety off. Firm grip.

Her finger tightened on the trigger, squeezing it slowly, ready for the recoil she had been warned was coming. Everything else had long since gone quiet around her, not because it was silent, but because the blood pounded in her ears drowned out everything but her own, rapid heartbeat.

Don't miss.

There was the sound of the gun exploding from the barrel, as well as wood splintering on the other side, lodging itself into the wall of one of the quiet little buildings. A miss.

But it had nothing to do with morals.

"Oh, I know that." Ennéa said to Madison. "Don't point the gun at things you don't intend to kill~" she said in a slightly sing-song voice. Her mother had given both her and her brother some very strict lectures about gun safety back when they were growing up.

Of course, those lectures had also included 'don't ever ever touch the gun unless it's an absolute emergency and even then *don't*'. Which kind of made Ennéa wonder why they even had a gun in the first place, now that she thought about it.

Her mother would probably have kittens if she could see her now.

Ennéa smiled to herself, vaguely pleased at the thought of doing something she shouldn't. "Okay." she said, taking a deep breath and slowly releasing it. "You're right. Carefully aim."

Ennéa squared her shoulders and took the stance she remembered Caelius had shown them. This time she lined up her shot and deliberately pulled the trigger.

The shot hit the shambling figure, thudding hard into its chest and sending it stumbling.

"Yeah!" Ennéa crowed. She pumped her fist and hopped in pleasure before pausing and quickly switching her gun's safety on. She then resumed jumping about. "I did it, Maddie!" she raised her hand. "High-five!" she cried.

Madison stared at the offered hand for a moment - Maddie? The nickname, coming from a near-stranger...

... except it wasn't that, not quite. Even if she didn't know A-Nine - Ennea - yet, they'd fought by each others' side. They'd died together. And then come back to life, somehow.

So Madison punted away the withering response her brain had prepared, held up one hand, and lightly slapped at Ennea's. Not too flamboyantly, since they were still in a battle zone, but... enough.

The second time was better than the first.

Her hands were shaking as she lowered the gun, letting it drop for a second to tilt her head back to stare up at the sky that seemed remarkably blue for a day they were shooting something distinctly evil, trying to coax her heartbeat to slow. Although she remembered Caelius had said it... or had it been they?... sensed fear, she couldn't quell it fast enough to save her first shot. Although that part of her personality had been interwoven into her own, she wasn't entire Zeta Eight anymore -- the gun felt heavy in her hand, the distinct feeling of weapon enough to make her feel another rush of adrenaline.

But she was a hunter. It was time to start acting like one.

Ignoring the chatter of the Phoenixes beside her, Petra lifted her gun again, exhaling slowly as she squeezed the trigger a little more rapidly this time, now that she knew what to expect. It wasn't a great shot -- she couldn't be expected to be perfect, her first time holding a gun -- but it hit, and she watched as it glanced off the hag's shoulder, the body crumpling a bit with the force.
