Fenrir Graveheart
The white haired girl silently nodded.
"Volume, we're looking for Tempo. You know the way, yessss?" Cheshire smiled widely.
Volume looked from the cat to Angel and then walked away without another word, going deep into the jungle.
Cheshire glanced back at Angel and rubbed against her leg. "I think we should follow."
Angel nodded. What a weird little girl.... However Volume seemed willing to lead them so with a smile at Cheshire, she scooped the cat up and followed after the white haired monster child. They seemed to be going deeper and deeper into the jungle. She hoped Tempo was alright.

The small group journeyed deep into the jungle. They walked through winding paths, pushed through thick plantlife, and crossed enchanting waterfalls. Every now and then Volume would stop and glance around. Her ears would p***k up as if listening for something, and then they'd continue walking. Eventually, Volume led the two to their destination, a very quiet area of the jungle that was populated with great trees with overhanging vines, and canopies that blocked out much of the sun's light. "We're here." Volume simply said as her walk came to a stop. "Tempo should be in this area."

When they stopped, Angel looked around. She didn't see any little boys. She'd just search the area. "Thank you, Volume," she said. Angel smiled at Volume. Then, still carrying Cheshire, Angel started looking around. "Tempo? Are you here?" she said while she looked.

A rustle in the branches above garnered some attention. From it a shadow dashed out and swung on a vine that then jumped into the light. A boy stood there, cloaked in wolfish fur. " Hey!" He pointed a sharp-nailed finger at the group and barked at them. " I told you Arete not to send anyone after me, Volume! Go away!"

Angel looked up when she heard branches rattle and followed the shadow until it was revealed that the cause of the noise was a boy. One with very wolfish features and from how he spoke to Volume, Angel guessed this kid was Tempo.
Angel frowned. "Why are you out here, Tempo?" she asked. She didn't understand. The jungle was very dark especially at night. And it was very dangerous even in the day. So why was this kid here and not in Arete's peaceful glade?

Tempo frowned frustratingly down on Angel and the group, but looked away with a small growl.
"He's come here to die." Volume said softly behind her. Cheshire sank lower into Angel's embrace. He knew it as well.

Angel's eyes widened and she held Cheshire closer to her chest. "All by himself?" she asked. The girl looked panicked and more than a bit confused. A little rational returned to her.
"What do you mean, 'you've come here to die?'" she asked, looking up at Tempo.

Tempo gave a frustrated growl and then finally barked down at Angel. "Its my fate, OK!?"
"Its all of our fates." Volume softly said before explaining. "Our bodies are never stable. No matter how precisely science can clone or splice DNA, it has never been able to replicate the same endurance that naturally born organs can take." Volume then raised her monster-like claw. "We, the "children of sound" as the Muse calls us, are vat children, born out of tubes and machines. Why would researchers bother with finding alternate methods to extend our lives when we are not even human. For our first few years we were all observed and tested for experimentation, and then when we're no longer useful we retire to this jungle...to die." Perhaps now Angel could realize what Cheshire had meant when he described this girl. Volume spoke in a quiet voice, but her words had such weight that they rang loud in the minds of those that listened. Volume then glanced up at Tempo. "Every living thing dies alone. Tempo's body is reaching its limit. He will expire soon, and he knows it. So like a dog that senses when its time has come, he's hiding himself away to wait for the end."

Angel stood there and listened to this with shock. Then she looked at Tempo and Volume. "But he's not a dog, he's a boy! Tempo, you're not a dog, you're a boy. Even if you were born from a tube. You're still human and humans don't die alone. They die with God and their family around them," she said. The girl tried to climb up the tree to Tempo, she had the strong desire to give the boy a hug for all the pain he'd been through. She wanted to hug the rest of these kids too. But first the dying little boy. However she wasn't exactly good at climbing trees and had no idea how to get a grip and scale the thing.

Volume watched silently from below while Angel made her climb. Meanwhile, Tempo shouted down at her and kicked the tree, trying to make her lose her grip. "I said go away! Leave me alone! I don't want you here!"

Fenrir Graveheart Volume watched silently from below while Angel made her climb. Meanwhile, Tempo shouted down at her and kicked the tree, trying to make her lose her grip. "I said go away! Leave me alone! I don't want you here!"
Angel was a stubborn girl. And eventually she made it up the tree trunk in spite of Tempo's best efforts to make her fall down. She was scraped up, but she settled herself on the same tree limb as Tempo. "Well I am here and I'm not leaving you by yourself. So tell me, what can I do to get you to come back with me?" she asked.

Tempo immediately shot Angel an agitated frown, and shouted from as far down the branch as he dared. "I said I don't want anything! I just want to be left al-" The wild boy couldn't even finish his sentence when a sudden shock shot through his body. His pupils widened and on reflex he clutched a hand over his heart before toppling over on his side. His body suddenly felt cold, seizing in shivers while he closed his eyes in a feign attempt to sleep through the pain. The white-haired girl below looked up at the two with dull and lightless eyes, fully aware of what was to come. "Its time."

Angel's eyes widened. Tempo's sudden downward turn scared her. She'd seen animals die before, she'd had pets after all, but...she'd never seen a person die before. And it was scary. But something in her made her move. She didn't want him falling off the branch! "Tempo!" she said.
She crawled across the branch on all fours and grabbed the boy before he could fall. "I'm sorry," she said softly. She pulled him to her and held him so that his head rested on her shoulder and his body went across hers. She rubbed his back. How was she going to get down?
Angel shifted around so her legs straddled the tree trunk. Then she used her legs and thighs to scoot across the branch and back to the trunk. Then she began decending the tree by lowering herself onto lower and lower branches while maintaining a firm hold on Tempo. It was slow going and when she tried to hurry up she nearly fell herself.

This was too much. The boy couldn't act strong anymore. Tempo shut his eyes and buried his head into her shoulder. His small, furry body shivered in her hands. "It hurts." The child wept softly, taking deep, pained breaths. "I don't wanna die." His pale hands gripped Angel's shirt, balling it up into a tight fist.

Angel swallowed hard and held back her own tears. She kept moving, making her way down the tree and getting scratched along the way.
"Shhhh I know. I've got you. I'm going to take you to Arete, kay? Tell me about yourself," she said.
She didn't know what to do really. But Tempo was in so much pain she wanted to try and help him take his mind off it. And now faced with him actually dying in her arms she needed some course of action! She managed to shield him from the branches and the bark. She got to the lowest branch she could and half fell, half lowered herself and Tempo down.
"Volume, what's the fastest way back to Arete?" she asked.
