She snuggled into her coat more to protect herself from the cold, and shivered slightly. Cold weather was terrible. "Chivalry? No, I've heard that word plenty of times." Just never thought to apply it to guys in general, though the man she walked next to seemed to be a more than likely candidate for the term. Her stress ball suddenly came to mind, and since she had nothing to do besides talk and walk, her left hand slid into her pocket to retrieve it and she began squeezing it in intervals.

Her gaze flicked to the street every time a car passed by in a lane close to the sidewalk, but otherwise she focused ahead of them, and completely missed the snorfling creature they'd passed. "The only dates I ever went out for were with friends. All girls," she explained with a shrug, but her mind wandered to other types of dates - innocent ones at first, but with a sudden jump her mind went unexpectedly to an entirely different sort of date. The suddenness of this completely and totally unwanted thought made her falter slightly, and the ball fell from her hand. "Ah, crap," she muttered.

"Really?" He frowned slightly. "Huh..." He rubbed the back of his neck. He found himself vaguely disapproving of this for some obscure reason. It was good that she would go out with friends, at least...

He saw the ball slip from her hand, "Ah," he turned to pick it up, "I've got--" A little orange shape snatched the stress ball up into its maw as Lucas leaned to retrieve it, darting ahead slightly with a feathery tail waving back and forth. He blinked, surprised by the Growlithe's sudden appearance.

Claire just shrugged in response. "I never went out with my boyfriends, we usually just watched movies at home." And that was all she'd say on the matter of what she did with them - nothing else needed to be said.

A smile twitched at her lips when Lucas leaned down to get the ball and failed due to a playful looking Growlithe, and she couldn't help but chuckle. "Looks like he's way ahead of you," she teased, admiring how adorable the thing looked. Maybe she should get one...

She took a few steps forward and reached her hand out towards the Growlithe while stooping low so she wasn't so much taller than the fire-type. "Hello there, can I have my ball back?" She said - as if it would answer her - and reached for her ball. She didn't want to have to get another one, after all.

"Mmm..." That wasn't right. A proper boyfriend should-- Well, that was territory that need not be entered.

"Hah, I guess so," he said with a grin, tucking his hands into his pockets and watching the Growlithe. Sure was cute. Lucas might not have minded the guy himself... Well, not that he particularly wanted or needed more pokemon.

The Growlithe thrust its hindquarters into the air, tail wagging more quickly as Claire brought herself down closer to its level. The look in its amber eyes betrayed no intent to give up the ball. Lucas watched the puppy curiously as his hand found a pen buried in his pocket. Inspiration struck.

"Hey guy," he called, earning an attentive stare from the fire-type. "Fetch." He turned around and threw the pen in the opposite direction. With an enthusiastic bark that released Claire's stress ball from its mouth, the Growlithe took off after the thrown item.

Lucas shrugged and continued along the sidewalk towards the parking garage, "He's probably got an owner."

Any attempt Lucas might have made to enter that territory would have been effectively blocked with barbed wire, guard Houndooms and giant machine guns, so luckily for him he didn't even bother trying, and Claire said nothing more on the topic.

Whether or not the Growlithe already had an owner was of no concern in her opinion, she'd stolen plenty of pokemon so far and had no qualms about it, especially with younger pokemon. She couldn't help but chuckle as the fire dog went bounding after the pen, and she took advantage of his distraction to snatch up her stress ball and replace it in her pocket. "Thanks," she said before falling back in step with her company. "You never know. I caught Zeus here not too long after I got to Kodo. He was running around on the streets as if he owned the whole city," she explained with a chuckle at the memory.

"Ahh, is that where he came from?" A city 'chu, then, was it? It made the electric mouse's interest in guitar seem that much more fitting. He soon found his path obstructed by - unsurprisingly - a Growlithe. The little fire dog had a pen clamped firmly in its mouth until it deposited the thing at Lucas's feet, tail wagging excitedly. He raised an eyebrow, laughing.

"Wow, he really brought it back," he remarked. The Growlithe gave a curt bark in reply, as if the human should have expected no less.

"Yep, and it explains his love of junk food and chocolate," she said and stuck her tongue out at the thought. He was such a little pig, but no matter. He was getting better, finally. It only took him, what? Three or four months? Oh well.

She paused when Lucas did, and chuckled as well when the Growlithe dropped the pen at his feet. "Good dog," she said before leaning down and picking up the pen. "My turn. Fetch!" That said, she tossed the pen ahead of them, taking great care to aim away from the street.

The Growlithe was off with another bark, dashing in the direction of the unfortunate office supply. Lucas watched the orange shape in the distance as it seized the pen and came bounding back, once again placing the impromptu fetch-stick at the man's feet despite the fact that Claire had thrown it.

Lucas retrieved the pen from the ground and tucked it back into his pocket, patting the Growlithe briefly on its head. "Sorry, guy, but we've got places to go." He was answered with a disappointed "graooo," but the fire dog continued to watch them intently, starting to follow when Lucas began forward again.

Claire chuckled as the Growlithe deposited the pen specifically at Lucas' feet for the second time, and was actually a bit disappointed herself when the man put the writing utensil back into his pocket. Then again, he did have to work soon - or now, rather - so she started walking again as well.

That didn't stop her from glancing behind them after a few steps and a grin slowly spread across her face as she saw the dog following them. Rather, following Lucas. "I think somebody likes you," she commented with a chuckle, gaze flitting back up to Lucas while walking, then looking at the fluffy dog again. "Looks like it wants to come, too."

Said fluffy dog wagged its fluffier tail when it realized it had been noticed, a motion that increased in speed when Lucas turned to look. He sighed briefly, scratched his head, and placed his hands on his hips. "You wanna come?"

"Grao!" The Growlithe seated itself politely on the pavement. Lucas scratched his head again, humming thoughtfully with a slight grimace. He wasn't a particular fan of battling, but it seemed like the dog would be willing to come along without first being defeated... Inspiration struck once more, and he retrieved an empty pokeball from his coat pocket and placing it on the ground. He took a step back and folded his arms.

The Growlithe looked between the ball and the human, barked again, and nosed at the pokeball. The contact initiated the capture mechanism, and a bright flash sucked the puppy into the ball's confines.

"Hmm..." Lucas reached and picked up the pokeball. "Guess I've got a Growlithe now?"

Claire watched the display with a smile, then chuckled at Lucas's comment. "I guess you do. A cute one, too." Hmm, where could she get one..? She made a mental note to look up places to get one, preferably a young one, when they got back to the base.

She started walking again, noting that they weren't too far from the parking garage. Her mind started wander back to its previous thoughts before they'd seen the Growlithe, and on par with her typical nervous habit she slipped her hand into her pocket again to squeeze the stress ball in intervals. Curse the unshakable need to fidget with things, but her mind didn't seem to want to stray from such uncomfortable thoughts, and she frowned slightly as she tried to find something, anything else to concentrate on.

He stared at the pokeball in his hand momentarily before placing it with Snow's and Merry's. The Growlithe seemed young, and he imagined he would have to keep as stern a hand over it as he did over Snow. Or... maybe not? Recently it seemed that his strictness with the Charmander was only affecting his mood rather than his behavior. He raised a thoughtful hand to his chin. What had he done differently with Merry that she had grown into such a perfect friend and ally...?

It hadn't been that long since they had arrived, and Lucas still retained a good idea of where exactly the car should be. He ascended the stairs, grinning slightly when he noticed the rail. On reaching the landing, though, he stopped suddenly and turned to face Claire. The expression on his face was different from any that had appeared there before, regardless of the prevalent personality. He visibly hesitated.

"Claire, I have a request."

Claire hid her hands in her pockets. Despite the fact she was wearing gloves, her hands were still cold and it felt like her fingers were going to freeze and fall off at any moment. She was slightly ahead of her company and didn't notice Lucas' grin as he saw the rail again they had contemplated on eating before finding food, but she did notice when his footsteps abruptly stopped. She stopped as well and turned, hearing him mention.. a request? The look on his face was certainly... rather new.

"Of course Luke," she said as her brows furrowed, her thoughts momentarily flitting to inappropriate favors younger men tended to ask for before she inwardly stamped those into oblivion. Her face remained impassive, albeit curious, despite her meandering thoughts. "What is it?"
PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2011 3:34 pm

He was momentarily impressed that she had detected the shift so easily, and it seemed to alleviate some of his hesitation. He leaned backwards against the rail and contemplated his phrasing carefully.

"For the past several years, I've been searching for someone qualified to... assist me in a matter." He paused again, toying with the pokeball containing the newly-obtained Growlithe. "I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but my duty is to guard Lucas. I am here to ensure the fact that he is able to live happily. To me, his is the most important existence in the world." Another introspective pause. "He is plagued by concerns that I neither understand nor have the power to alleviate. I would ask for your assistance in this matter." The usual cold expression had thawed into one of total sincerity, perhaps even of some vague sorrow.

The shifting between Lucas and Luke had happened enough times for it to become obvious to her when it occurred, most notably due to the extreme differences in expression and countenance.

Her hands were still shoved into her pockets, and her left still absently squeezed the stress ball at lengthy intervals while she listened. Besides expression, his tone of voice and choice of words changed dramatically as well - where Luke used the word 'request', Lucas seemed more likely to say 'favor' instead. Such musings were in the back of her mind as she refrained from speaking until he was finished, her brow still furrowed. It was wholly understandable that Lucas was his main concern above all else - they did share the same body, after all. "I understand what you mean," she said in regards to the first few statements after a thoughtful pause, then continued "but what sort of concerns are they?" Obviously it had to be some emotional matter, since Luke seemed to be mostly devoid of those. Or so he would have everyone believe, but his slightly more softened expression betrayed that. Regardless, it would be hard to assist in anything if she didn't know what she was supposed to help with in the first place.
