Sammis, dignity shredded not for the first time tonight, gave an undignified grunt as Vessali's massive hand seized him by the robes and dragged him wildly across the grounds. It was about all he could do to keep up, especially with half of his brain still occupied on clutching his basket like a shield, albeit an ineffective one, and dwelling on the sheer size of the tunnel snake that had burst out of the darkness and killed the tiny flit.
It was somewhere between Vessali's second vigorous yank and the gold dragons furious -hiss- that came out of his shock enough to focus on the panic, chaos, and the screams of pain from the darkness.
It made the pit of his stomach drop, not knowing who had been hurt or how, and it was far too easy to overlay human pain with the dying firelizard.
"Did you SEE that thing????" He demanded, as they made their panicked dash for adult dragons who were not furious to defend their clutch. He wasn't sure what else to say... or do, they were already running.
Oh shards, this was a nightmare. They had no idea where the sharding tunnel snake was, how many eggs were alive... how many candidates were alive...

Aww; a little firelizard, that certainly broke the tension a little. Was she wild? If not her owner was going to be in a whole pile of trouble (and with the one flitt per person law it would be easy to figure out who the culprit was), but all that aside for some reason it made Ash breathe a sigh of relief. Count on a firelizard to appear in the wrong place and at the wrong time looking... scared?
Oh Sharding wherballs!
A thing had just sprung from the earth and snatched the tiny creature up in its jaws. A tunnelsnake. A huge tunnel snake and now it was coming for them.
Ash did not consider herself a coward; she'd stand her ground and fight a fight when she needed to even if it looked as though it might get her a good few bruises. This, however, was not some d**k who'd got a bit too friendly with her or somebody else after a drink or six. This was a huge damn tunnel snake, and if she tried to punch it, it would tear her arm off.
The Ash didn't scream like a little girl as the beast raced towards her and the other female candidates, but only because she was using all of her breath for legging it towards the dragons. She might be small, pathetic, and unarmed but dragons had teeth and claws; if the snake appeared near the dragons they'd shred it, right? And not crush her in the process, right?
Shards.
She did not want to die today.

...not only was the bronze not an angry wher, he was actually a talkative wher. A very excited wher who very much wanted to eat some tunnelsnakes. Oh Faranth, she had just found the best wher ever! And probably the best place to be, since he could see the tunnelsnakes when no one else could. Time to make friends.
"I hope you get to eat some," Iafri agreed. "Can I stay with you and watch?"

Well that went over horribly, at least Jerishude thought so anyway. People had been running everywhere and he'd been doing his best to avoid the trampling and the flailing and whatever else could possibly end with him getting injured. The idea of having any part of him stinging and swelling at the hatching as a result of a person did not sit well with the young man. It didn't sit well at all.
Of course it would taste a lie to say that he wasn't happy to see that boy who'd sassed him before being taken off the sands with what looked like a broken leg. There was some relief of course that he wasn't dead, Jerishude really didn't wish death on anyone because that would be a waste; but then there actually was someone who didn't get up from the sands. Also, it looked like there were tons of girls now running around and only two boys left from the other candidates that he didn't know. Talk about a number reversal.
Maybe now that everyone was done running around and the Queen wasn't making all that noise the hatching could continue? Not that anyone could rush eggs into hatching but certainly the sounds of dragonets running around would be a welcome change from the screaming and fear of tunnelsnakes. Come eggs, bring on the babies!

Once she was close enough to the dragons to feel a bit safer, Ash turned to see what was happening to the rest of the candidates. It was, to be frank, a scene of mayhem. Moaning bodies littered the ground and were swiftly being moved out of the way. Despite the fact that the tunnelsnake had rushed at the girls, the boys seemed to have the worst of it; she could see only a few still on their feet. Shards. She hoped everyone was alright, some of the bodies being whisked away by the healers looked pretty still, but they could well just be unconscious.
How could this be happening? A tunnelsnake invasion right in the middle of a hatching, and the thing was massive, and yet it had managed to vanish from view. It could be anywhere. It could strike at any moment. The eggs would surely start cracking open soon, and the hatchlings would probably panic along with everyone else. They might go between either in terror or because their rider had been taken away, or they might maim or kill yet more candidates.
How could this have happened? How had nobody known until so recently that there were these massive tunnelnakes around, and how had they not been dealt with already?...
How was her dragon going to cope if it hatched out over there and she was all the way over here? Steeling her nerves, Ash moved away from the perceived safety of the dragons, and tried to make her way back towards where they were supposed to be standing in ranks.

Connor had managed to make it to what he assumed to be the relative safety of the dragons without being trampled, eaten or otherwise disabled. Though from the terrible sound of the queens hissing and roaring in the darkness he wasn't at all sure how the other's..or even the eggs..had fared in all the confusion.
He still didn't have a light..and he still couldn't see very much but from the pained sounds reaching his ears now that some of the screaming had died off he knew there were at least some wounded still out there, but he had no idea if there were still tunnel snakes around - he rather hoped that the noise had scared them off.

Ow. Okay, that hurt. Valdi wasn't too sure what had happened in the dark, but that had definitely stung. The sound of the angry Queen definitely let him know that it would be best to not be where he was, and Valdi inched towards the dragons after a moment of trying to ascertain where he was. It was dark, and he had forgotten to bring a glowbasket--Sharding stupid of him, he figured--but he had to get over there. That tunnelsnake was the biggest he had ever seen, and it was still out there somewhere; he sure didn't plan on being that thing's late night snack, oh no. There was one boy being taken off the stands, he noted--that had to suck. Valdi wasn't going to leave the Sands just because of...well, whatever it is he had gotten just now. He was still all confused and hyped up, and as a result wasn't too sure aside from the fact that it hurt and was on his right side. Whatever, he could make it; nothing had hatched yet, and he wasn't about to leave without at least trying to Impress. Nope, not happening.

Did he see it? Did he see it? He'd just hauled Sammis across the grounds, twice, to avoid seeing the sharding thing again. He didn't mean to stare at the other boy like he was a dimglow, but for just a second, he did. He couldn't help himself.
Then he shook his head and rubbed his face with a hand that shook far too much for him to feel completely calm and exhaled hard. "I-I saw it. I c-couldn't not see it." Even in little light. And now he was stuttering. Perfect.
He let his hand fall. "You're a-all right, right?" His gaze moved on, back toward the gold and her eggs and the wingleaders, then to the grounds and the bodies being cleared and helped off. More all right than those poor people, anyway.

Sammis shrugged meekly, still rattled by the proceedings, clearly badly shaken.
"Yeah... yeah I'm alright." A bit bruised maybe from being yanked around like a satchel of laundry, but...
He glanced at the grounds, trying not to shudder. These sort of stories were really only interesting if they happened to people you didn't know and had never seen. Having them happen around you was a different animal entirely. He still couldn't believe he'd actually frozen. If it hadn't been for Ves, he'd have been trampled.
He'd been hoping they'd found them all, cleaned the grounds since the guard was killed, but that had clearly been an entirely vain hope. "...Shards it was -huge-" he breathed out, amazed and horrified yet. "Shardit we're in so much trouble."

The first "hatching". Most of the candidates had retreated from the clutch, as one did not simply stand firm in the face of such massive dragon screeching at them.
This did not settle the raging queen enough to keep from lashing her tail around (just barely avoiding many of the Wingleaders) and stomping her large "feet".
The eggs rattled. The Swamp Egg crashed against the Coal Egg, causing its thin shell to break. The egg then fell over, and from the opening dropped a small, green leg.
The leg was not moving.
The Coal Egg, on the other hand, had not stopped moving. It shook and, before long, a green face emerged with an angry hiss similar to that of her mother.

Ash's eyes were drawn away from watching the progress of yet another injured candidate who was being carried away by a sudden flash of moment. She startled like a spooked runner, certain for a moment that it was the tunnelsnake come back to devour her, but thank the First Egg it was not; the Swamp egg had cracked to reveal a little green leg... that remained motionless. Ash grimaced slightly; the thing had smelled like death, was that really all that lay inside it?
At least the Coal egg seemed to contain a healthy, if angry, dragonet. Shards. She hoped it managed to find its rider alright in all the confusion; it didn't look distraught at the moment, but today was giving the tall woman a very firm lesson in how quickly a situation could change from good to dire.
Silently wishing the hissing green luck, Ash ran her eyes over the rest of the clutch for any more sign of movement before scanning the rest of the hatching grounds once more for any sign of a more sinister, slithering movement. Had the tunnelsnake decided there were too many people and gone away, or was it just waiting for a chance to strike?

Mairin was more than a little happy that she'd gotten away from the queen by now. She could feel the rumble from those stomps from where she was and it was disquieting even from a distance. The fact that the atmosphere of the hatching grounds was currently not a pleasant one did not help matters any. Far too many people had gotten hurt in the panic and Mairin caught the smell of human blood every few breaths.
The girl's focus though switched to the clutch though when the eggs rocked and two smacked into each other. One cracked enough for a dragonet's leg to pop out, the limb did not move though and Mairin was unsure if it would. If she was seeing things properly that looked like the egg that had smelled off at the touching.
Before she had time to peer closure though the other egg in the little collision cracked enough for the face of a pissed off looking green to show. Not the best start to a hatching, Mairin noted, but as long as that damned tunnel snake didn't come back she could deal with this. Angry regular dragonets were something she could handle.

Sammis flinched as the eggs rocked, expecting another tunnel snake, rather than a hatchling, to burst free, though the small, furious green was, at least at the moment, a somewhat dubious improvement over the former.
He felt worse when he noticed the limp arm of another dragonette hanging from the shell of the foul smelling swamp egg, and the flip his stomach did had nothing to do with the remembered stench.
It was dead, he was pretty certain of that, and it's sister was -furious-. Even if the tunnel snake hadn't yet mauled anyone, he'd have willingly put marks down to say that there was going to be more blood on the hatching grounds tonight... and probably soon.
