Galvanth warbled down at his children, crooning to the Blues and Greens that littered the Hatching Sands. He was quite proud of the young dragonets, simply for still being there. Even the sad little Blue had found his rider! You will go far! he told them softly, sure that they would not hear him. But he was a new and proud father, and while that attachment to them would inevitably fade with distance and time, right here and now as they moved over the Sands, they were his babies. And he was their father.
The Blues had Impressed, and S'raid almost... yawned. How utterly... dull. Would nothing entertaining happen at this Hatching? Sure, there had been the one death, but that wasn't so much entertaining as irritating. Irritating because Galvanth was still feeling faint pangs of woe over the loss of the baby. S'raid did not particular relish the feeling of woe.
... Did anyone? ... Best not to answer that. Well, in other people woe was all well and good. It could be turned to his advantage. He approved of things that could be used to his advantage, naturally. Unfortunately, Galvanth's emotions tended to bleed over slightly. It was not useful for S'raid to experience this sense of loss. He looked forward to the moment when the Bronze forgot all about the betweened Brown. Really, there were far better things to concern himself with than the loss of a dragon who could not find his rider.

Two blues to two young women, Kazvar stroked his chin, unsurprised at the choices, from the way they'd been studying the girls. There were still dragons on the sand, but it wasn't the largest clutch, and he could see strain on the faces of the candidates, even the one's that hadn't just been subject to an angry slash of claws. That girl wouldn't be forgetting it in a hurry, and he wouldn't be surprised if she ended up wearing the scars as a permanent reminder. Dragon claws could do a great deal of damage, though so could a baby Wher.
Go find your partner already he willed, irritably, at the sands and the wandering greens, though he couldn't say he wasn't entirely unbiased. He'd seen Zeren's strain, and he already had pegged the boy as deeply emotional. He'd be seriously hurt if he wasn't chosen, and he wasn't sure the boy had the stomach to stand again. He'd already had to argue with him that it was possible. Zeren had seemed strangely convinced that he'd only have one chance, an impression Kazvar doubted had come from lessons. One of the other candidates perhaps? Tension between the Weyrs and outside forces always existed, caused by poor understanding of each other. They lived on the same world but sometimes they might have been worlds apart, and he wouldn't be surprised if an angry candidate might have planted false information among some of the candidates born outside of the Weyr, hoping against everything they knew of impression it would increase their own chances.
It was entirely speculation though, and none of it was actually doing anything to affect which dragon went where. He just wished they would so he could go back to bed.

Now that her sister was no longer trying to correct her, the Prairie green toddles towards the boys, stopping every now and again to look them over. The way she appraised them however, was more like looking at a fine bolt of cloth or a choice cut of meat... She warbled at a few, stopped and eyed them inquisitively, as if deciding if they were the right kind of vintage, perhaps.
The Taiga green, intent on ignoring her silly silly sister pushed through the front ranks and then the second line... and then stopped. She almost seemed confused, apparently expecting Hers to be right there. Snorting and flaring her wings, she spun around and stalked back to the front and stood before the Candidates like a drill sergeant, daring any of them to naysay her search or even comment on her misstep.

Zeren closed his eyes for a moment, he couldn't bear this, the green searching and appraising them, turning away from some. He opened them at her first warble though, that was a pretty sound. His head turned towards her, ignoring the green among the girls, his gaze entirely on this possibility coming nearer towards him. His hands ached from clenching his fists for so long but he didn't unclench them, his jaw was tight as he tried to keep his emotions to himself. Not only was he in a room full of strangers which made him uncomfortable anyway, there was the added fact that the man that was watching was very important to him. He relaxed slightly at that realization. He would try and believe and trust in what Kazvar had said about it still being possible even after his first failed hatching. Today might be the day and he smiled just a little.

Shedrawn vibrated visibly with excitement there was a green in with the boys and one in with the girls too, but this one was CLOSER! His gaze danced between her her sister and the other eggs. He Never got this excited ever but he couldn't help it the social dynamics of this hatching were fascinating!

Ashmere straightened her shoulders almost as the action would someone please the almost stern seeming dragonet. Taking in a deep breath the thin built woman slowly exhaled as she waited for the green to make her rounds yet again. This little one was actually making her nervous.
'Feels like I am an back in the crafthall and getting lined up for punishment.' Ashmere almost chuckled as she tried to hide the action behind her danty hand.

The redheaded boy tried not to laugh at the Taiga green's misstep... and failed. Horribly. In fact, he failed so thoroughly in this endeavor that he was holding his sides by the time it was said and done, trying to clamp his jaw shut in an attempt to stifle the laughter. After all the fuss at her sister, the Taiga had marched right back out of the girls and was now staring the lot of them down, while Andeon laughed raucously in the background.
“Women, eh?” He elbowed the nearest candidate, “Can never make up their sharding minds.”

Nayetuel watched as the Blues found their riders, and new Greens took the Sands, some of the tension the loss of the little Brown had caused easing out of his shoulders with each new Impression. The one Green seemed... well, cranky, but not distressed, certainly. He watched the more pleasant seeming Green, the one paying attention to the boys, and offered her a hopeful smile. At least none of the Hatchlings had been violent- sure, the one little Blue had lashed out, but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as it could have been!
There were a few eggs left, and the two Greens, so he was still hopeful- there was still a chance, still the hope that one of them might find him. That he might actually belong. He hoped.
He gave a little start when he was elbowed, blinking at the redheaded young man beside him, before offering a quick laugh and a smile. He hadn't really had time to make new friends yet, and, well, if he was hoping to actually belong at the Weyr, friends would be good. And while maybe the Hatching wasn't the best place for conversation, he wasn't exactly picky.
"Yes, right," he agreed, chuckling again. "Terrible, isn't it?"

Adimine, your Mazamath is here now. Feed me?
When the blue dragonet had headed in her general direction, Adi dared to hope, just as the other girls in her vicinity probably did, and her heart soared when he bumped her with his nose, lay at her feet...and finally, he spoke to her. To her! The girl burst into happy tears and knelt to hug him tight.
Oh, Mazamath! You're really mine!
And you are Mine, and I am very happy too, but also hungry. Can we eat now?
Adi sniffed and composed herself - mostly - and stood with him to lead him from the sands. On her way to the feeding tables, she scanned the crowd for M'cel and Tairoth. When she spotted them, she jumped up and down and waved. Look, look! Did they see?
Coming, Gemgareth! Mazamath called back to his brother, bumping His from behind to get her back on track. Food first, bouncing later!

Wykla gave the dragonet a soft pat on his neck with her non-meat filled hand. "Of course," she murmured. "We'll exercise those wings so you don't over do anything." Then the blue jaws open, she would insert another piece for him to chew. Mazamath is coming now. He glanced in the direction of said blue before turning back for another bite.

Now this? This S'raid approved of. The little Green was marshaling the girls as was proper, looking them over to see if any of them were worthy of her. Clearly that dragonet had some spirit, and a will of her own. She had more of a sense of self worth than many of the dragonets, he imagined. Less than Galvanth had, of course, but this was an improvement over some of the other dragonets in Ianath's clutch. They were, in general, not terribly impressive. It was rather disappointing, really. After all the time and effort that had gone into caring for those eggs, after the time he had wasted lulling about in Malvren Weyr... well, one would hope that more worthwhile dragonets would come of it.
They are all worthwhile, Galvanth disagreed vehemently. They were dragonets. What did S'raid expect of them, that they would march in line, and puff their chests out like overstuffed wherries? No, babies were not like that. The Bronze gave a rather irritable huff. Really, didn't his rider know any better? ... But of course S'raid did. He was playing a joke on Galvanth. The Bronze just knew it. There was no way that his rider was so irrational as to expect more from babies than babies could give.
A faint twitch of amusement tugged at S'raid's lips. Thank you for that show of faith, he sent back, and then turned his cold eyes onto the Candidates below. Perhaps, if the dragonets proved to be less than impressive, there would be more to find among the Candidates? Unlikely, mind, but possible. He pursed his lips, and considered them thoughtfully. Hmmn. Well, there wasn't much promise to be found, but here and there he saw some glimmers. Was this the best that Pern had to offer? That remained to be seen. Truthfully, he did not have high expectations for them-- if he had, they would only have failed to meet them.

The bray of laughter earned at least one scowl from the stands, though admittedly... Kazvar tended to scowl a LOT. For all he'd never wanted this for himself, he thought the sands deserved a certain degree of respect. People were dedicating themselves to life with a partner they would probably not survive loosing. If for that reason alone, there should be some respect to this.
...That was getting ridiculously worked up over dragons though, and he leaned back, scowling even harder rather than admit that the excitement was even getting to him. They seemed a confident lot, this first clutch from the 'little' queen.

M'cel had indeed been watching, and was clapping heartily for the girl. Oh, Marcy, you see? Little one has Impressed a little one! Look, a blue for her! Tairoth trilled, quite obviously thrilled.
I see, Tairoth. Good on her! I'd've hoped for a Black for her, but not everyone could be so lucky. M'cel smiled, patting his neck. "Good job, Adi!" Good on her. A sweet young thing like her would be paired well with a blue. Better than a green. Little girls should get to stay little girls as long as possible.
We will have to say hello! Little blues are very cute.
---
"Aww, gorramnit, Gemgareth, why'd you gotta-" Rene looked towards Wykla with a glare, shoving an extra large peice of meat towards Gemgareth as if that would keep his mind quiet. "M'Rene. Good on ya fer goin' an joinin' th'blue club." She said as Gemgareth worked on his large chunk, whining softly.
Too big!
"You're the one what's complaining about bein' hungry!"
I will choke, and then where will you be?
"Suppose I'll be here on the sands with my hand down your throat, tugging it out." Rene said in a practical way. She waved towards Adi and her dragon. THere, three in their little 'club'. Not bad, not bad. All girls, but at least Adi wasn't a silly girl. Hopefully this Wykla wouldn't be either, or else Rene wouldn't be very plesant with her.

The Taiga green finally finished looking the front row over and tossed her head in obvious dismissal and shoved through the row to begin... well, inspecting the second line. Her was here, she need only find the girl! When Andeon started laughing, she arched her neck and caught his gaze a very obvious buck up tone to the look she gave him before she padded away. It's a good thing dragons have short memories or she'd likely be one to follow through on the "i'm coming for you" threat. The little green Prairie also looked up as Andeon laughed then shook her head, soundly dismissing him. She meandered past Zeren, stopped... reared up to watch him then shook her head once more. Where was Hers...? Here, somewhere... Ah! There! There was someone who could appreciate her tastes! She padded over to Pazzult and cooed at him, Pazzultmine! Your Nnith is so hungry but only the best, yes? For your Nnith?

Zeren couldn't believe it... the green she was looking right at him, she'd reared to get a better look, he held his breath he was ready ..... then she shook her head ... dismissing him, and his heart sank. Not good enough for her.. she'd looked right at him, like those Impressions he'd seen ... but no. His momentary relaxation was forgotten at the (seemingly) blatant rejection. His eyes dropped to his feet, what had he done wrong when she'd looked, had he not done something he should have?
There, she'd Impressed another, though Zeren didn't see it, he was fighting to keep his emotions in check. "what would Kaz think if i cried, i'm 18 for Faranth's sake, i'm not some snotty kid, i just....." he thought. There were still eggs on the sands and he forced himself to look up, to set his jaw and see the hatching through properly. Later he could go to his bunk and get emotional but not now, not yet.
