"Darkness within darkness. The gateway to all understanding.
-Lao Tzu

Malachi took a seat in the large, over stuffed blue couch in the private sessions room. On a sickly yellow wall hung a picture of a cat that said "Hang in There!". This room couldn't have been tackier.
After a moment, the counselor joined him, siting in the chair across from the couch. "Perhaps," She began. "You would like to explain your little outburst during group."
"No, actually." The boy said, folding his arms across his chest. "I don't."
The counselor was unamused. "You have to start opening up and letting go of your anger. You'll feel much better."
Malachi was sure he was going to be sick. This woman seemed to think that life was a Hallmark movie and just talking could fix all your problems. What a joke.
"Whatever, lady. Think what you want to." He said, standing. "Life isn't all sunshine and roses." He walked to the door, and before she could stop him, he walked right out into the hallway.
"Malachi! Malachi!" She called after him.

Jade heard voices and her curiosity was instantly peaked. Sometimes she was much like a child, needing to be entertained, because sometimes she just couldn’t do it herself. Just like her need to talk, she needed to do something with herself. Standing on the side of the door, she had found a long time ago that most of the doorknobs didn’t work properly, and you could just push the door open a crack and hear everything. That was exactly what she had done now, and was now standing with her back to the wall. It didn’t take her long to realize that it was Malachi in there, and a smile that she couldn’t explain jumped on her lips. It seemed like most people around here cave the councilors a difficult time. While Jade lied about everything and anything, changing her story every time to just annoy the living daylights out of them, it seemed that Malachi took the more direct approach, just telling them off. Silently, she cheered him on.
That was, until the doorknob moved, and she turned quickly, sprinting down the halls. The male wasn’t allowed to see her, it would just make him even angrier. Quickly, she took the nearest turn to the right, not looking back. Please. Don’t see me, Malachi.” She begged silently.

Once in the hall, Malachi began walking towards the stairs to the upper floor. The counselor leaned out of the room and called down the hall. "You need to forgive yourself for what happened to Evangeline!" That name stopped him cold. Instantly, his temper flared and he could feel himself growing hot.
"Shut the f*** up!" He yelled, not turning around. "You don't know anything!" Quickly, he walked up the stairs and down the hall to his room. The door slammed loudly behind him. How dare she!! Who did she think she was, judging him like that?? She didn't know what happened that night! She had no right to just dig into his life like that!
Unable to control his rage, Malachi threw his fist into a wall. The drywall gave under the force of the punch, creating a nice hole in the wall. He was about to flame, he could feel it. Malachi paced, attempting to calm himself down. "No, no, no. Not going to loose it. Can't loose it." He muttered to himself.
Downstairs, the counselor sighed and dropped Malachi's file onto the couch. She shut the door then disappeared outside to regulate the other students.

Once Jade caught her breath, she slunk out of the hallway, following where she could hear Malachi’s fading footsteps, up to the dorms. She stood at his door for what felt like the longest time. What were they all talking about? Evangeline? Who would that be? What had happened to her? The female reached for the door, but quickly dropped her hand again, shaking her head. There was a crash and she cringed away from the door, taking a step back as she wondered what he was doing in there, why he had gotten so furious.
Then again, she had been that way before, when they brought up her little sister’s name. When they asked if she saw her. Of course, she denied it, she denied everything. Her little sister was still alone. Little Rachel was alive, she just couldn’t come, she was just still so sick, that she couldn’t come. Green eyes clouded over and Jade seemed to forget where she was as she just stood there, thinking about her little sister, about everything that had happened. She should have been angry at her, for doing what she had, for making her lose all of her friends, for sending her there. IF she hadn’t gotten sick, then everything would have been okay. But it all wasn’t okay.
Blinking the memories and feelings away, Jade rubbed her eyes, wondering, once again, if Malachi was okay. But she was too scared to knock on his door and ask. He would just get mad at her again, and she didn’t want that. She didn’t want the male to be angry, not anymore. It seemed he just got so mad so often, it wasn’t healthy.

After another moment or so of pacing, Malachi sat down on his bed, his head dropping into his hands. They were hot against his face. No matter how he tried, he couldn't seem to gain control of his emotions. Just the sound of her name and the boy was lost in his own anger. The one person who had mattered the most and he had hurt her, burned her, and now she hated him. Malachi couldn't remember her standing at his hearing, testifying that he was a crazed pyro with an terrible temper, a danger to society.
Again, the rage built when the memories flooded his mind. He hadn't meant to! It had been an accident, a mistake. But there was no way to take it back now. Malachi had ruined Evangeline's life.
Malachi stood again and resumed his pacing, trying to avert his mind. If he couldn't distract himself soon, things would go south quickly.

Liars Jade stared at the door, listening to the sound of the male pacing in his room. She wanted to do something, anything, to help him. But it wasn’t like it was her place. He didn’t even know she had been there. Like a shadow. Like Rachel. The thought made her shiver,, shaking her head. If anything else, she needed a distraction from her own mind. Lightly, she pulled up her hand and knocked twice on the door. “Malachi?” Her voice was soft, caring. Luckily, it held no traces of the fear she held inside, the fear that he would reject her, send her away. Luckily for her, lies were already jumping to her mind, reasons for her being there, for disturbing him if he got furious. The councilor sent me, wanted to make sure… I heard something in there, wasn’t sure if… Want to talk, to apologize about… They swam in her mind, each one wanting to get out through her lips, though she had to hold them in. Would he even answer the door for someone like her?

A knock on the door pulled Malachi from his thoughts. It was Jade. What was she doing here? Before he knew what he was doing, the boy had walked to the door and opened it. There was Jade, looking as picturesque as ever. It didn't occur to him to think of something to say, and he stood there searching for anything to say.
"Uhhh... hi." Mentally he kicked himself. ''Uhhh... hi'? Could you be more of an idiot?' He scolded internally. For the first time in a good long time, Malachi was at a loss for words. There was a lot he could say, something he should, but nothing seemed to come up. A strange silence descended upon the pair.

Liars Jade froze, her mind going blank as the male came to the door. Say something. Ah! What am I even supposed to say to something as ridiculous as that? An awkward silence fell over both him and her as she just stared at him for a long moment, feeling like more of a dork than she had for the longest time. It was all his fault, for giving her such an idiotic greeting, though. “Anyhow.” The female said, even though nothing had been said previously. “I just wanted to be sure that you were okay?” Brows raised slightly as she studied him. Luckily, he looked like he was all in one piece. “I was walking by and that old hag councilor told me to check up on you.” She lied easily, shrugging slightly. “Don’t ask me why. I think she’s losing it. But it wasn’t like I had anything better to do, anyhow.”

"Umm, thanks." Malachi could feel the anger drifting away. It couldn't have been that easy. He had spent the last few moments trying to rid himself of the uncontrollable rage, but when Jade came to the door it seemed to just float away.
'Weird..." He thought. "Yea, I'm fine." The hole in the wall seemed to speak differently, but he hoped it wouldn't matter too much.
"Hey, about a while ago in the woods..." Malachi wasn't sure where this was going or why he even started it. What was he doing apologizing? Jade needed to stay away from him, and so far he had yet to deter her. "I..." The words seemed to be caught in his throat. "I just..."
'Say something! Don't just stay there stuttering like a moron!'

Liars “Good.” Though her green eyes drifted over his shoulder and could see a nice sized fist hole in the wall, she said nothing about it. If he said that he was fine, she wouldn’t bug him. It was up to him if he wanted to tell her how he was feeling or not, anyhow.
“Hm?” Jade turned her attention back to him, shaking her head softly. “Don’t strain yourself, tiger.” She teased, slipping her hands into her pockets. “It’s not your fault, anyhow. I was rude and pushy. It wasn’t my place to say those things. I was just trying to help though, can’t blame a girl for trying to connect with at least one person in this hell hole, right?” She asked, a playful tone jumping into her voice as she leaned slightly on the door frame. “But, just like I said before, I’m not afraid. It takes a lot more than just petty words to make me seriously fear someone. Besides, when someone tries to push you away, most of the time it’s because they’re too afraid to really let someone in. And that just means that they need someone by their side. Not that I’m saying that that’s you, I’m just saying that that’s the norm.” Just like me. “Besides.” She smiled playfully. “You act like someone getting furious with me is weird. “I thrive off of it, sometimes.” It was a lie, of course, it hurt her deeply, most of the time. Nobody sane would enjoy such an awful thing. “Everyone needs someone hating them from time to time to keep them on their toes, am I right?”

"I don't hate you, Jade." Malachi said, his stomach tightening Had he really been cruel enough to make her believe he hated her? There was no denying Jade was strange, but all-in-all Malachi had enjoyed the few moments they had spoken (prior to his flip out). "And it wasn't your fault I decided to get all pissy." It wasn't an apology, but it was getting close. The tall young man wasn't sure why he felt he needed to say he was sorry at all. Malachi never apologized. But something about the idea of hurting her made him feel... guilty. Was there no way out of this without hurting someone? It seemed like every time he turned around, someone else had gotten hurt on his account.
Feeling awkward just standing hall, Malachi moved out of the doorway and said, "Do you... wanna come in or something?"

Liars Jade couldn’t help but smile. He came off as the guy that didn’t like to apologize much, so she took his words as an apology. He wasn’t so bad. Perhaps a bit awkward with his words, but she could tell he was trying to be nice. “You’re not so bad, tiger. Not so bad at all.” She straightened up, stretching slightly as he moved into the room, shaking her head. “I would. But I gotta write a letter to my sister. I told you about her, right? Anyhow, my room’s just a few doors down that way.” She jerked her thumb the opposite direction of the stairs. “It’ll only take me a few minutes or so. If ya wanna talk, though, this time it’ll have to be you who comes to me.” Jade teased him. “I can’t come find you all the time.” It was true, every time they had talked, it as her going to see him. She didn’t want to seem pushy, so this time it would have to be him who took the initiative. That was fair, right?

"Alright." Malachi nodded, attempting to play it as cool as he could. "See you later then." After a short goodbye, he shut the door. The short conversation had frazzled the silent bad boy more than he would ever admit to.
The anger was completely gone and the boy fell onto his bed, relieved. His mind lingered on Jade and their little conversation. For some reason, he couldn't seem to stop thinking about her. Malachi sat up and shook his head. He might kill her, and now was not the time to be forgetting that. Running his fingers through his hair, he debated what to do. He could ignore her and spend the evening in his room with the guarantee he couldn't burn her and that she'd get hurt, or he could go down to her room and make her happy with the large possibility of killing her.
Malachi cursed under his breath. There was no winning, was there?

Liars Jade moved down to her room, sitting down at her desk, touching the long since died and dried out flower that sat on her desk. It ws one that he r sister had given her in her will. The one that she knew that Jade would put on her grave, she gave right back. It was touching, but also heart breaking. She satthere for a moment, looking at the letter that she was to respond to. Just like the writing Jade had, her sister had curly, looping writing. In fact, if you looked, it would look like the same person had written both letter. Which, of course, was untrue. Her councilors had tried to tell her that these letters were from herself. “They don’t know anything.” The female muttered, shaking her head and starting to write, smiling to herself as she did so. She wrote about Malachi, her true feelings, and everything else. There was no one lie in the letter, since her little sister always hated it when she lied. She told her that Lying wasn’t good, and that she needed to stop. So Jade wouldn’t lie, not to Rachel.
She finished and folded the letter, slipping into an Envelope and writing Rachel on the front. Jade wondered if Malachi would come, or if he would stay in his room. Part of her hoped for both.

It became clear that this decision was not going to be made easily. "Why does it matter if she gets hurt?" He wondered out loud. He had never cared before, why did it all of a sudden matter now? She was just some girl. And besides, something had to be wrong with her for her to be here.
He sat up. How much could one conversation hurt? He was just going to talk to her. That was it. After that, the boy vowed just not to talk to her. But for now, he would walk down to her room.
With that, He stood and left the room, walking down the hall to her room. Malachi stood outside the door a moment before knocking, unsure with his decision. Maybe this was a bad idea...
