Soon as someone invents a time machine, "before" will no longer be a relevant term.

before will still be relevant to what ever your present point in time is... and no, lets not get into a massive debate about time relativity again sweatdrop

Let's face it, there's only two events that can happen that will reset our year count from before and after Christ.

Either aliens make contact, or time travel is invented. It'll be either "B.C." (Before Contact) and "A.C." (After Contact), or "B.T.T." (Before Time Travel) and "A.T.T" (After Time Travel).

Of course, if it's the time travel thing, then the year will be constantly jumping back and forth as people mess with the time flow.

two schools of thought on time travel... well three actually.

1. you would not be able to interact with anything or anyone because events have already played out, it would be like watching a movie.

2. you would only be able to travel backwards in time because any changes you made would alter the future from which you came and thus create an unknown future you could not return to. (included in this theory is the sub theory that anything you changed would actually change nothing but simply cause the events that took place in the first place to take place as they did originally ((IE you try to stop the assassination of JFK and end up causing it to happen exactly as it happened in the first place((( ya thats right, triple brackets bitches!)))

3. time travel already exists in the future but either the first option is in effect or the paradox theory is in play which states that if you travel back in time to change something you would have no reason to travel back in time to change it and thus you wouldn't in the first place but then because you didn't you would travel back in time creating an infinite loop.

TLDR: see this SMBC comic

There is one other school.
It says:

You can only go back in time as far as the point when timetravel was discovered.
Example:
Timetravel discovered 1 Jan 2012 = You can't go farther back in time then 1 jan 2012

And time travel could be even more limited if each time traveler needed their own machine to be free in order to use it. Sort of like being cryogenically frozen, but able to go backwards in time.

Some people believe time is liner in that at some unknown point in the future time will effectively start over so if you could freeze yourself and remain undisturbed long enough you would go back in time by going forward... not technically time travel but still.
