Yeah, I remember going to summer school in China for a month or so when I was in first grade. They made us do ballet and put on a show for a parents' night type thing. D:
But anyway, I think the Asian school systems are evolving to become a lot more like those in the "Western world". In any case, they're not as strict and totalitarian as many make them out to be.

I did the AFS Summer program in Japan. Unfortunately my host family had lived in New York for 7 years, so there was no forced language use. In fact they laughed a little when I tried it... ;_;
I loved them anyway. Tokyo was freaking amazing. But if you're gonna go, a summer really won't cut it. I still feel like I just plain ran out of time to learn anything or explore.
That's why I'm going back for a year in college, no matter what my parents say (I had to do the summer program so I wouldn't miss school).
I've also been to Mexico on mission trips on two different occasions, and I was somewhat amazed. I spoke nowhere near fluently, but the really simple stuff, the stuff you learn your first or second year, just more or less popped out. It gives me hope... but I just know I bombed that AP test.

biggrin Where all did you go? Did you get to see any of the shrines or temples? I got to see the Meiji Shrine and the Asakusa Temple while I was there...
But the best part was probably when I got to go to the Ghibli Museum.

Okay, here's my situation...
I'm 15 and I really want to go as an exchange student to either Finland or Germany. I speak some Finnish, but I want to learn German because my German is horrible. You should try to hear me "speak" it. It's horrible. Anyway, I want to go when I'm 16 but I have no clue how to get into this or who to talk to to become a foreign exchange student. Please help, anyone. sweatdrop

My school has a program were you can go to Spain for 2 weeks of classes and then have a few more weeks to go throughout Europe. It really sounds like fun but I couldn't go. I wouldn't want to burden my parents with going, and I have to do veterinarian stuff over the summer. Plus my parents are over-protective and wouldn't let me go anyway rolleyes . It'd be nice to have other people who speak spanish around but I guess that's what I have a twin for. If I can't go to Washington DC or the beach(which we stay 2 hours from) I can forget it emo .

I'm going to bring this thread back from the dead.
I'm an exchange student right now, from the states to Paraguay. If anyone had any questions about exchange, AFS, Paraguay, or anything of the sort, I'd be happy to answer!

I really, really want to be a foreign exchange student, preferably while I'm still in high school. sad
I'd be happy as long as I get to go, but I'd want school credits (unless I graduated early, which actually may be a possibility) so I'd like it if I knew the language... ...but not China or Taiwan. My mom (Taiwanese) has scared the heck out of me in terms of Taiwanese schools, and I assume China is the same or worse.
Japan actually seems like a lot of fun. I know it's also kind of intense there, but most people whose blogs and whatnot I've read had a fantastic (not partying type of fantastic) time there.
Other than that, I guess either an English speaking country other than the US... or some European country that I'd have to study the language of...
...I would also include Korea (south, obviously razz are you even allowed to study in North Korea? not that I'd ever want to) but I'm not sure if the school system is too similar to the one in China/Taiwan.
Wow why did I write all of that, I probably won't even be able to go. sad
