Mei stared up at Ginger for a moment. Had she heard correctly? She could never be sure. Sometime she wasn't sure if she was actually hearing these things or if she was imagining that people were talking to her. "I'm sorry, I must have misunderstood," she said with a hesitant smile. Better safe than sorry! "You see, I'm not the best at English, so... I must have misunderstood." she let out a nervous laugh.

Did.. she not say it right? She normally gave orders clearly enough for everyone to follow. "You're going to a date with me; you know a date. That thing between two people that they do as first steps of forming a relationship, at 8PM, tomorrow, at the inn which also has a restaurant and is possibly the only restaurant in the island. Also if you do not show up, I do very well plan to find you in your home and punish you." She smiled and nodded. She then sat down the flowers in front of Mei. "Those are yours too. I would have brought chocolate, but flowers are free to me." Since she owns the flower shop and all.

She listened to her very carefully before laughing once more. Oh, it seemed she HAD heard correctly! How nice. She was happy to hear that she wasn't imagining thing. But she continued to laugh nervously, because now that she wasn't nervous about making a mistake, she was nervous about what Ginger had said!

"Ah... yes... I understand..." she said after a moment, clearing her throat. Ginger was intimidating! And she liked intimidating women! But she wouldn't want to cross one! So she might as well go along with what she said!

Ginger didn't notice that the laugh was a nervous one, she just knew she was laughing. At her! Was she going to get rejected by some little pip squeak like her?! She should punch her in the face- no.. no calm down Ginger. This is why you don't date people often, you take things too seriously and assume they're mean. You have to make this work! Wait.. this was Paprika's evil plot.. so.. you have to date this girl, and stop Paprika from doing whatever she's doing, and maybe making it work. Eating TV dinners for one, ice cream for two, and drinking gin for four isn't good for your health. "Good. I will see you at 8PM sharp." Hopefully not a minute late.

Ginger now turned around and took a few steps forward as casually as possible.. before sprinting the rest of the way, face burning red. Hey, she may be a big intimidating tigress, but when it came to dating, she was nothing but a wittle puddy cat~

Mei looked up from her desk the moment the door to the clinic opened. She was like a puppy sometimes, responding eagerly to visitors. Or, as close to "eager" as she could get. She was a little surprised to see Shinju and Kotone (who, for convenience's sake let's just say, have been coming in for regular check-ups, even though Kokoro is lazy and doesn't feel like actually roleplaying any of it out. Because it's boring.) again so soon.

"Uhm, welcome. How can I help you?" Mei asked, looking over at Kotone quizzically. The teenager was red in the face and was on the verge of tears. Or not. It looked like she had been crying the entire way there, which she had. She had very low tolerance for pain.

Shinju looked flustered! Not so much about Kotone being okay or having to deal with a baby from now on, but because she was nervous that the baby would be born and she'd have to see the whole process. Because even though she was pretty maternal and knew exactly how many kids she was going to have (she had already picked out names), childbirth grossed her out. And so she'd rather not have to witness anything that awful unless she was pumped up with drugs. "My sister's going into labor, of course. Why else do you think she looks like that?" Mei honestly had no idea how to answer. Her brief run-ins with Kotone had been unpleasant or less than remarkable, so she was not confident in her ability to say something nice about the girl.

"Shinjuuu, I don't like thiiisss," Kotone whined tearfully. Shinju turned her head around to glare at the girl. "Well, maybe you should have thought of that before you opened your legs for some retard!" she snapped. Kotone straightened up suddenly and fell silent. "Please? Do something?" Shinju said gently as she turned back to Mei.

"Uhm, yes, just a moment," Mei said nervously before standing up and running into the back to find someone, anyone. Lesley, Finn, hell, she'd even take Paprika! Just someone who could deal with things. Pregnancy freaked her out and the tall girl was scary.

Unfortunately for Mei, she would find none of the people that she was looking for. Lesley had quit and/or been fired since Mao is too much of a sore loser to believe that anyone would quit from working under him, while Finn was.. just wasn't working that day. The man had days off too! Paprika was inside her broom closet, probably, maybe.. Mao wasn't really certain, he didn't check on the woman that often unless he was trying to force-feed her his remedies or was bored enough to give her acupuncture after knocking her out with some poisonous plant. Really, it was a good thing Ginger didn't seem to care much for Paprika or the man would have been sued long ago!

Mao had been inside the staff room, drying out the dead leeches he had nabbed from Zhi's aquarium that morning – who was at home panicking over the missing pair – when Mei came rushing through. He raised an eyebrow from behind the safety goggles he wore, speckled with slimy droplets of something – it would be best not to question it. “..Mei.” He greeted while not-so-subtly sliding the metal pans that held the leeches out of her line of sight. He didn't doubt he could manage Zhi normally, but if the girl heard that he had kidnapped and murdered some of her pets, he didn't want to know what methods she would resort to. He crossed his arms and turned completely towards the secretary, “What is it? You're not on break.” Not that she had a break since she ditched work to go home with a certain monk. He wasn't very happy, even if she had accompanied him to the masquerade.. So, no more breaks for Mei until Mao had something else to put his disdain onto.

Mei held onto the doorway, as if she were hiding from Mao. Since the Masquerade, she had been oddly on edge around him. He was intimidating! And she didn't even have her friend as a buffer! (It was terrible thing to say, but her boss had treated her so much better when Lesley was around) "I know, I'm working," she said quickly, though she sounded insecure and her reply wasn't convincing. She quickly cleared her throat and shifted her weight to the other foot. "Err, someone's having a baby. In there. In the lobby," she pointed behind her, as if he needed the clarification. She honestly had no way to tastefully explain the situation. Childbirth was unpleasant and gross and the topic should be avoided at all costs in polite company.

Mao would have smirked at how nervous Mei sounded, but he was a bit too.. indifferent to care enough to do that. Instead, he just raised a brow slightly to encourage her to go on.. until she did and he instantly regretted that. A momentary conflict entered Mao's mind as he heard what was going on, forgetting the little dead leeches in favor of focusing on the situation at hand. Now that he knew what was happening, it was up to him to get it done since Finn wasn't here and neither was Lesley, while he wasn't such a bad person that he would allow a schizophrenic to hold a newborn infant. She would probably try to eat it or sacrifice it or something disgusting that would end up staining his tiles.. But, on that note, if he hadn't been informed, he would have had to come out to find a big mess of.. stuff that came out when a woman gave birth. ..Wait, but.. He creased his brow and turned to open one of the many cabinets in his office, pulling out a thick book obviously written in some.. odd language. Latin? Ah, who knew? Regardless, he flipped through it until he hit one page with some disturbing imagery that even the narrator refuses to describe.

One more moment to glance it over and he snapped it shut (thank god) to put it back into it's rightful drawer. “Then what are you doing here?! Go escort the subject into the delivery room now, before she ruins the floors!” He barked out at her in mandarin, frowning at how slow Mei was. Of course, there wasn't a delivery room to be found, but he was sure she would figure something out. He needed to put these leeches somewhere safe so he could go deliver a baby! ..Among other things.

"Yes!" Mei squeaked as Mao snapped at her, and she didn't waste any time in spinning around and leaving the doorway. The tall girl was scary, but Mao was even scarier! She hurried back into the lobby and had just reached Shinju when she realized that they didn't have a delivery room. They didn't have a lot of things. It was a wonder the death rate wasn't higher here. Not that it was particularly low to begin with, but there was a considerable number of murders compared to death due to illness or injury. Anyway, they didn't have a delivery room, but Mei didn't want to go back there to remind him of that fact. She knew it wouldn't end well.

"...You okay?" Shinju looked down at the girl, who had turned deathly pale.

Mei forced a shaky laugh. "Yes, I'm fine, please come with me," she said in an unusually high voice, reaching out to gentle touch Kotone's arm and guide her along. But before she even made contact, she stopped. There was something VERY WRONG with this girl. What if she caught it? Whatever it was that was making her look so crazy? She quickly withdrew her hand and transitioned into an over-the-top arm gesture, as if that had been her intent the whole time. She showed them the way to the examination room (it was close enough, right?) and hovered by the door, making sure she wouldn't be in Mao's way. She then proceeded to stare at her feet while Shinju and Kotone stared at her.

With a rolling suitcase trailing behind him, Mao had entered the examination room simply because it was the loudest of the lot. There weren't many other people in that day – the clinic was heavily understaffed ever since Lesley and Finn left! He'd have to put up an advertisement in the city, but, until then.. He stopped in front of the door and looked at Mei for a few moments, the woman standing outside the room in some kind of anxiety. It took him a second, but he soon understood that poor little Mei felt awkward because of the childbirth. That was.. amusing, to say the least, but he didn't really have time to sit there and mock her for it.

Since we don't have a nurse right now, Mei, you'll have to stand in for her. Try not to make a fool of yourself.” He told her in a drawl, continuing in their own tongue before heading into the room.

He looked at the blond girl, then at the older blond girl, and frowned. “Are you the guardian? I need you to fill these out so we can admit her into the clinic and.. here.” He knelt to open the case he was wheeling behind him, taking out a few packets to flip through them. Mei's work, but Mao didn't want them to have much of a choice in the matter. He took out one such form and handed it to the supposed parent with a pen, “Sign.. here, here, check that, and.. sign this. Oh, yes, and write here your relation to the patient.” He instructed the blond as he peered over her to the form, watching and waiting for her to finish up.

Mei could feel herself start to panic. "B-but! I'm not nearly qualified!" she protested hesitantly. She held onto the doorjam tightly and peeked in nervously. She refused to step inside until she knew he wasn't going to hit her. He had never shown any sort of violence toward her, but she wouldn't put it past him.

Shinju stared down at the form as she took it from Mao. Paperwork? It seemed like an inappropriate time, especially since Kotone had begun to whine again, albeit quietly. People were talking in a foreign language that sounded scary, so she didn't dare make her complaints much louder.

Shinju filled out the form and handed it back to Mao. "Anything else?" She asked hopefully. She just wanted to leave the room. She was a terrible older sister, but she didn't care at that point. Maybe she could go hang out with the freaked out receptionist.

Yes, yes.. Shinju – as he came to find out when she first signed her name – was listening to him without question! He was almost worried that she would try to ask what she was signing out of care for her sister, but, thankfully, he had everything he needed without breaking a sweat! He ignored Mei's fretting from behind and simply snatched the paperwork back before Shinju could dare read what she had agreed to for her sister. “No. Now, you may.. go wait out there or whatever it is you feel like doing. I'm going to tell you that the miracle of birth,” He had to stop himself from rolling his eyes, “won't happen for.. several more hours, I need to measure her cervix before giving anything exact.” He informed her carelessly while he put away all that delightful paperwork, glancing over at Kotone. ..Wait..

What is she doing in that, Mei?” The man turned his eyes onto Mei critically as he switched to Chinese, “I thought I told you to prep the patient! I can't do anything if she's dressed like Xiang Xiang!” That was what all the Chinese girls wanted to dress as nowadays, right?! ..No, wait, Kotone was Japanese.. Oh, well, not like he cared. The point got across anyway. He waved his hand at Mei so she could get Kotone changed properly while he looked back at Shinju, “Is there any family that you want to call? The father, perhaps?

Mei's stomach flipped when Mao scolded her. That's right! Changing clothes! They almost never had a patient who was bad enough to have to change clothes. She completely forgot about that part! She had no idea who Xiang Xiang was (she was clueless about pop culture, among the numerous other things) but it couldn't be good. "Yes, sir! I'm sorry, sir!" she squeaked before hurrying in to help the whining teenager change into the hospital gown.

Shinju tried not to cringe at the word 'cervix' and instead focused on the relief that this man wasn't going to force her to stay in there. Since she assumed she'd be doing the bulk of the work when the baby was born, there was no way she was going to start now when she could very easily sit in the waiting room with a magazine.

"Family?" Shinju repeated. Who else would they call? She was silent for a moment while she thought everything over, just in case she was forgetting someone or something. Not so much someone to call to the hospital, but maybe her boss to explain why she was missing work. Hell, maybe she'd get time off!

"What about Za--" Kotone spoke up softly as Mei finished helping her change (it had taken her way too long to find the gown in the first place). But before she could get out Zachary's full name, Shinju interrupted. "Nope, just us!" she said with a wide smile. "Uhm, anyway, I'll be going in there now," she pointed to the lobby. "Thank you, and, uh... good luck," she added with an awkward salute before she made a quick getaway.

If Mao had actually heard the name Kotone was trying to get out, he probably would have informed her that Zachary died a few days ago in a fire.. It was probably better for Shinju to interrupt the girl in that case. Childbirth and finding out that her baby's father died without her knowing in the same moment? That would be a bit much for a teenage girl! Not that Mao was thinking of anything but what he was allowed to do to Kotone while she was in labor. Finally, he could stick some needles in someone's back! He'd been wanting to do that for awhile now~! Mei was much too busy to get that treatment, so of course he couldn't force her to sit through it.. Kotone, on the other hand..

He took out a little bowl from the suitcase he had wheeled in earlier, somehow getting a hot kettle from there as well. How? Well, that was just a mystery no one would know the answer of! He poured it into the bowl, added a few drops of peppermint as well to fill the room with the minty steam.. and then carefully dropped a few cubes of dried ice into the bowl from a cooler he kept inside the suitcase. There was no other reason behind that other than the smoke that came from the bowl looked really cool. What? Mao was allowed to think something was cool! He snapped the cooler shut and went back into his suitcase, taking a plastic baggy with something long, dried, and thin inside. It looked like a couple of strands of some kind of jerky, along with a full dried lizard too. He handed that to Mei with all the seriousness of the world, “Feed that to Kotone and get her set up on the bed. I'll go make her the tea.” Just as he said, he wheeled the suitcase against the wall and out of the way before leaving to the staff room to use the stove top there.

Mei stared at the baggy for a long moment. Mao had left the room by then, so she was safe to be as skeptical as she pleased. She was usually confused about most things, but this hit a new high. There was a lizard. A lizard. A LIZARD. Was he joking? No, he had sounded serious. And she wasn't convinced he knew HOW to joke. Maybe it was just in the shape of a lizard? Like gummy bears or that sundae she had once bought that actually wasn't a sundae but plastic? She opened the bag and frowned. Nope, if that wasn't real, she didn't know what it was. But Mao was her boss. He owned the clinic and apparently was qualified to do this. So he must have known what he was doing. She was just the receptionist. She hadn't even passed her college biology class. Who was she to judge?

Kotone had already flopped back on the examination table, not because she had understood Mandarin or the situation at all, but because the last contraction had worn her out so much that she just wanted to go to sleep until all of this was over. She stared at Mei out of the corner of her eye as the tense woman hurried over. What was in the bag? She didn't have a good feeling about this...

Mei helped her sit up, pulling out some spare pillows that had been in the same cupboard as the hospital gown, and made sure she was as comfortable as she could possibly be. But considering she was a tiny teenager going into labor in the examination room of some tiny village clinic, the bar wasn't set particularly high. Regardless, once Mei felt a little better about Kotone's comfort level, she held the baggy out, right in her face. "Urhm, the doctor said you should eat this."

Kotone's mouth fell open as she assessed the situation. She couldn't even eat food that TOUCHED, let alone something that looked unnervingly like a whole lizard. "No."

Mei started to get a little panicky. Couldn't this girl just eat the damn thing? Then this awful situation would be over and they'd never have to think about it! Not that SHE'D eat the lizard if she were in the same situation, but she wasn't in the right mind to be very sympathetic.

"Please, the doctor said!"

"Nuh-uh!'

"It could be important!"

"I don't care!"

"I'm sorry, but--!"

"I said NO. It looks gross!"

"I know, but..."

"Hey, what are you doing? Get away!"

"I'm sorry, but the doctor said you should eat this!"

"Get away! Get away!"

"Kya! Please, no kicking! No kicking! Aiyo!"

Mei let out a pained cry as Kotone somehow managed to kick the baggy right out of her hand. The baggy went flying and disappeared under the cabinet somewhere, but Kotone didn't stop kicking, no matter how many times her feet connected with Mei. Eventually she was stopped by another painful contraction, and Mei quickly retreated to the other side of the room.
