Lesson One
Spells
Welcome all to your first defense against the dark arts class! *Smiles*
Dark Arts, as we discussed, are kinds of magic that are mainly used to cause harm. They include spellscurses, potions, items, creatures and actions and the use of any dark arts is usually illegal. An example of a dark creature is a dementor, a creature that feeds off human happiness, causing despair. An example of a curse is Crucio, the curse that tortures.
First and second years: First and second years, today you will be learning the leg-locker curse. This curse causes the victims legs to lock together. The incantation is Locomotor Mortis. You may now come and get a little walking statue.
Third and forth years: Third and forth years, today you will be learning the full-body-bind spell. This spell causes the victims' legs and arms to snap together, immobilising him or her. It does not affect the victims' breathing or sight. There are known counter-spells, one of which is finite. The incantation to the body-bind spell is Petrificus Totalus. You may also come to get a little walking statue.
Fifth years: Fifth years, today you will be learning the Patronus charm. This difficult spell can be used to protect yourself from dememtors and lethifolds and can also be used to send a message. To get this spell correctly you must think of a happy memory. Explore your past and pick a very powerful one. Lose yourself in that memory. After finding a good memory, speak the incantation, Expecto Patronum. In order for your patronus to protect you, you must stay focussed.
When fighting a dememtor, which is what we will be doing, this spell creates a kind of positive force, a shield which the dementor feeds on instead of you. And when done well, this spell takes the form of a silver animal, an animal that reflects the personality or feelings of the caster. It will also drive the dementor away. You may go form a line in front of that big chest.
Sixth and seventh years: Sixth and seventh years, today the jinx you will be learning is Levicorpus. This jinx causes the victim to be suspended in the air upside down. It is best to perform it nonverbally but try your best. If you're having trouble casting it nonverbally, just cast it verbally. To cast it, the incantation is Levicorpus, and the wand movement is an upward flick. You may come and get your small walking statue.
First, second, third, forth, sixth and seventh years, you can begin practising your spells on your statues.
*Walks to the big chest and talks to the fifth years* Everyone will try to do a patronus charm. If you succeed, you will have the permission to face the dementor that's in this chest. If not, you will have permission next lesson. Alright? Ok so start practising!
