Congratulations! ^^ And now for a Christmas present to yourself...a nice, long break.

I know what it is like to have great characters, but nothing to do with them. Maybe a small break to clear your head will allow you to come up with something.

Oh, its was so nice to just relax tonight, and not have to worry about typing 2,000 words of a story I wasn't even interested in.
But it has been totally worth it to finish the goal. I've felt disappointed with myself in the past for giving up so easily.

I am taking a break, but I actually need to come up with a good idea pretty quick here.
One of my most amazing teachers is probably going to have a 'Novels and Publication' class next semester. All we'll do in there is work on our own personal novels, and then she helps us get information on publishers and agents. I'm am estatic- but I don't have anything to really write.
There's always my main piece, but I estimate at least a year of research before I can actually start writing it, so thats not so much of an option.
However, in such an awesome class, I really want to be doing something that I'm going to love forever.

Merry Christmas and congratulations on finishing your story smile

I had an assignment in drama to write a ten minute play. Then we're going to cast class members, direct our plays, and perform them.

I have had so much fun writing my play. Its short, to the point, and I can do so many things with it! It was the perfect chance to get to know my three characters, and I'm tempted to write another short piece about them. This has definitely been one of my favorite writing experiences.

I'm starting a new project.
Now that I realized how much fun it is to write short plays, I'm going to use characters from my main piece to write a series of unrelated, short plays. They may not even be in the same time period or place.
This will be a great and fun exercise to help me get to know my characters, a develop a sense for writing them. I'm very excited!

So, back to school! I already have homework. Oh well- I've got most of it done.
Lately my life has been a cascade of good events- one of my favorite English teachers just put together a class she calls 'Novels and Publication'. Its intended for students who want to be authors, and most of the class time will just be for us to work on our own personal novels! We will also be going to a writing convention in February, and arranging interviews with a couple of published authors over the course of the semester. My favorite part is all the writing discussions we're going to have. I'm so thrilled! I want it to be Wednesday already!

I've also started reading "Uprising" by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Its been pretty sad so far, and I realized I don't like reading books that deal with feminism. I get so riled up and I can't think about anything except the unfairness of men in the past, for at least an hour. Its very distracting.
Aside from that, its been good research- mostly because I'm realizing only so much research is necessary to start writing. Its a promising thought.

Congrats on finishing! Sorry I'm a bit late with that, but Christmas really sucks up all of my time. XD

That publication class sounds awesome! I wish I had a class a bit like that. =O

I just typed out an indepth plotline of my first book. Its a disaster on paper- I always forget to add little things in, and my fingers get to tired to write things completely out.
So, its great to have it on the computer. My thoughts feel very organized and collected right now- I'm loving it.

PMS, the class has been a good time. The best part is just being around other writers- its such great encouragement. Although I wish the teacher would focus a little less on author blogs and writing conventions, and a little more on actual writing.
I'm pretty set on taking some writing classes in college, but I'm worried about the class material. I don't like writing things that don't pertain to my main piece, but I'm probably going to be required to do it alot. *sigh*

Computers are amazing things. They are also curses sometimes.

I had to take a writing class in college, and I embraced and got half of a story done. She gave a lot of good tips and notes that I should probably locate and post in my journal later. The tips work for a variety of media: books, movies, etc., and are nice to at least keep in mind to keep yourself organized.

I am also in agreement with you on focusing on actual writing. Is that not the point of the class?

In any case, sick in bed today. So I actually have time to continue the one I am working on. Hopefully the next part will be done sometime this week, if not later tonight. XP

The point of the class is just to write. But the teacher needs to get through her introductory phase. Then we'll get some real work done. Even though I shouldn't complain too much- I was feeling pretty vague about some points of my story, and in just the last few days I've really worked alot of things out.

I would love to get some of the tips your teacher gave you, and hearing how the writing class was for you is encouragement for me.

I hope you get better soon (of course. What dutiful citizen doesn't wish the illness away?). What is it? Common stomach ache, flu? I can't say I don't appreciate your new posts though, even if you had to get sick before you had any time.

Its always exciting to hit a milestone in your writing (if thats what you were talking about). Are you referring to 'part' as in 'part one of So-and-So book' or just something you've sectionalized in your head?

Well, hopefully you can get to the writing part soon.

I loved my writing class, though I felt simultaneously honored and annoyed when my tough critic teacher had no advice for me to improve. XP Sometimes she did, but more often than not, it was like, "...I don't have any advice for this." I will be honest; in an almost masochistic way, I love having my work torn down.

My sister's computer is temperamental with my hard drive. Sometimes it works immediately, and sometimes, like now, it says it needs to search for hardware and then refuses to load.

Stomach flu, but I think it is one of those twenty-for hour things. I felt sick last night, but I am doing a lot better now. Admittedly, I have not really been on Gaia much when I can get time online. Just one of those, "I am not in the mood for this" slumps.

I am working on the next chapter in the fanfic I started (and I am damn well going to finish it). I had some of it written in my notebook (where I stopped because I hit a block), but now I think I found a way around that, as well as a way to combine both paths I wanted to go into the story. I also had an idea for a (probably going to end up pretty long when I finish) one-shot that I am writing notes for as they come.

In any case, once I have the one-shot and the current fic done, I am done writing fanfiction for a while, because as I worked on those, ideas for my original works started coming---which was my intent with writing fanfiction to begin with: work on something else until that block on my original stories is wedged away and removed. XP

I can't wait for the day there is no more critique for my work. I always get stuck in this trap thinking that I'm a better writer than everyone else... I should probably get some more critique just for humbling purposes.
And, of course, if I let someone read my work (rare) I really just want them to praise it. When they start to critique it, I criticize them in my mind. Oh yeah? I'd like to see you try writing half that much...

Your computer is like our DVD players- all three of them. We actually know that 'Ponyo' and 'Sinbad' will only play on DVD player 1, and 'Toy Story' will only play on DVD player 2. To avoid the frustration, I just make the popcorn while someone else gets the movie started.

I'm running out of mood for Gaia too. This guild is dying again... and I have movies to watch online.

I just asked about your fanfic in your journal, thinking you had already posted something about it, but I couldn't find it. So, you don't have to be repetetive if you haven't already posted.

Its exciting to overcome writers block in one of your main stories- something I'm currently trying to do. Fanfic is fun, but you know you can't really get it published so its just practice. Practice is good... but getting down your original work is its own kind of satisfying.
I have like, two hours to overcome this writers block... I have an assignment in 'Novels and Publication' due tomorrow, and I still don't know what my climax is.

I love giving and getting critique. I just really like to improve. ^^

My own DVD player is temperamental and extra sensitive. It refuses to play recorded DVD's (a big, NOOOOOOOOOOO! for some of my Batman episodes...luckily, I have a VHS player that still works, and have the same episodes on tape...), and if the DVD is dirty (read: one or two little smudges) or scratched (read: a little more than regular wear and tear that will still play nicely). At the very least, I take extra good care of my DVD's anyway, and this is incentive to keep them that way...

I can pinpoint a few reasons why: this guild dying, some dead RP threads, none of my cosplay accounts really need to be updated, and there is one thread in particular that I love going to, but it has bored me lately. It is a cosplaying thread (we make Gaia accounts, dress them up as characters, and play them. Three guesses as to who one of my accounts is, and the first two do not count. XP), but we also allow OC's. This is the issue: there is this one girl and her little posse who make TERRIBLE characters, and literally NO ONE outside their group (and the thread owner) wants to play with them. And they are in ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Put it simply...when you make a fight with the Joker more boring than a phone call, you are a bad character. And when you get your way with godmodding, you are a bad character.

And I did clarify in my journal, so no repeats here. ^^

I am actually excited and did start getting the media center cleared out jst so I can have a place to write uninterrupted. I am excited to be able to write original work again. ^^

And technically, you can publish fanfiction. Putting it online counts (you just get no money from it), and some franchises, like Star Wars, have numerous authors writing stories and books for the series---hell, comic books with their numerous writers can be argued as a powerhouse of published fanfiction of varying quality, seeing as a lot of the original authors are dead, have no power over their works, or otherwise do not care what people do to their characters (which is both a blessing and a curse for various reasons). The only real difference is they do have to abide by the rules set up by the companies (and some book series with authors carrying the banner are bound by the same rules based on what was established by previous books).

For example, we have great stories like The Killing Joke, which Alan Moore intended to be an alternate universe, but is widely accepted as the best Joker back story ever told and considered canon, and any Marvel fan is aware of the One More Day arc, where Marvel's editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada, horribly ret-conned Spider-Man's marriage to Mary Jane in the most wall-banger-ly way in existence because he felt fans could not relate to him married, despite the comics going on for twenty years (and he was HORRIBLY wrong as the outrage soon proved. The guy who was contractually bound to write it in-text brought the flaws to attention, and wanted no credit for it). And then the X-Men series had a great writer, Chris Claremont, who wrote the comic for years, and was eventually replaced by Chuck Austen. I have comics from both writers, and to put it nicely, there are many good reasons why Claremont is preferred.

You can also publish fanficiton to works that are public domain. Susan Kaye's Phantom is her version of The Phantom of the Opera, with the Phantom's past and so forth, and Wicked is a sequel to the first Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. And we will not get started on how many versions of Dracula there are in existence...

[/tangent]

In short, usually, it is not profitable to publish fanfiction, and when it is, it often applies to special cases.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 18, 2011 9:56 am

Ah, I forget about public domain. Thats a good thought- now I can be less paranoid about plagiarism (did I spell it right?). If I wasn't so wrapped up in one piece of work, I'd write my own versions of the classic fairy tales.

I haven't done alot of RPing, but I've experienced the difference between good players and bad players. I'd never had to deal with godmodding, but I've seen the awful characters- they're supposed to be so special and unique, but really they're just painfully cliche. As well as the ones who never check their spelling or grammar before they post (I could just shoot them). And I personally think it takes real skill to put on a fight in an RP. Its not the sort of thing you can just throw together whenever you feel like it.

Writing original work is my favorite thing to do. I'm currently re-writing my NaNoWriMo novel, and its really changed alot, but in a great way. I have had so much fun working with it again.

Have you ever heard of The Wheel of Time series, by Robert Jordan? I've never actually read them, but they're my dad's favorite books. The author retired before it was finished though, and chose someone else to write the last few books. My dad tells me he enjoyed them well enough, but the two writers just didn't think alike, so the style of the last books is different, and not what he enjoys. And even though there was alot happening in the last books, for whatever reason the new author felt the need to add even more! Now the books are just painfully packed to the brim.
I personally, have never read anything that has transitioned between authors.

Robert Jordan actually died, unfortunately, he didn't retire. I'm sure Brandon Sanderson did his best to step in and finish it up, but it must have been an enormous task to take on the finale of such a huge series. I can't even imagine trying to do that--or the pressure of not living up to the fans' expectations as you write hundreds of thousands of words... gonk
