He could feel his stomach churn at the sudden change in direction. It wasn't a very pleasant feeling in the slightest.
"Mr. Boreas, if you could please give me some advanced warning before you do something like that, it would be a great help."
Indeed, the side of the carpet which Boreas was not attending to was a pretty decent mess. One corner was completely gone, the other was lacking a tassel. "Nelumbo, I hope you do not get upset with me for this... but I would like to try something, if I may?"
He did offer a respectful pause before reaching to grab the non-tasseled corner on the left hand side and giving it a slight tug. It was gentle, as if the teal-haired boy was afraid to injure the already injured Nelumbo.

In truth, the sudden turn wasn't a planned deviation, but it sure was exciting. Boreas was having a little too much fun for someone who was trapped in a endless blazing hot desert. He couldn't help, but to support a large, somewhat goofy, grin as he and his companion tried to debug Nelumbo.
"Nelumbo, you certainly know how to keep people on their toes!"
He gave his steed another encouraging pat and turned to Howl as the teal haired boy turned and reached for the ragged corner. Boreas hoped it would work. Speaking of hope, the glass was slowly returning to half full. Or should it said that it was making a permanent stay at half full for the time being. Boreas felt as light and free as the wind that blew past he and Howl.
"I wish we could make Nelumbo a new tassel. Something like a thank you present."
Boreas would have offered his uniform as a base, but he knew that it would just magically return to brand new if he tried to rip the strange fabric. So instead, he kept his grasp on the right tassel.
"Should I switch to the tassel that you were holding Howl?"

No luck with that attempt; the carpet went straight except when Boreas held one of the tassels on the right, in which case it obediently tilted into an easy right-hand turn.

With a slight chuckle, Howl uttered to the Senshi "You most certainly may try, Mr. Boreas." Nelumbo was a strange puzzle. Perhaps not nearly as strange as the initial puzzle of following the footprints in the sand, and not nearly as frightening as the occasion where the young lad began to sink in the sand. Yet, puzzles were indeed something to keep the mind active.
With his hand, he smoothed his fingers over the cloth again, once more treating the carpet like a cat that needed pampering. "If worse comes to worse, there is always the saying that two wrongs do not make a right, but three rights make a left." He let out a little laugh as he glanced up the sky. "Mother always was deathly afraid of left hand turns at stop lights. So she always used to make three right hand turns to eventually result the the same result as a left hand turn."
He sighed, and for a moment, he was silent. Air rushed past them as they continued to move forward, causing Howl's jewelry to sway slightly. Eventually, he seemed to ask the carpet "Would it be possible, Nelumbo, for us to come up with a signal for you to turn left rather than right? Perhaps three short tugs to signal a left?" He glanced to Boreas with a smile that almost seemed to read Yes, I am aware I am attempting to reason with a carpet.

[OOC: Making a 270-degree right hand turn is one of three ways to achieve a left-hand turn using your magic carpet; two of those three ways can be accomplished at this time. If you'd like to commune with the carpet further to attempt to discover the other method, please let me know. <3]

"That makes perfect sense Howl! If each side changes the direction by 90 degrees, then all we need to do is pull the right side three times. We probably have to do that in a quick manner to navigate smoothly, but if we all work together, then it should be just fine."
The smile remained on Boreas' face as he spoke. A slight chuckle escaped his lips as he watched Howl try to bargain with Nelumbo. Where his companion's attempts in vain? They would see soon enough. He didn't expect a mathematics quiz while he was drying out in the desert, but Nelumbo certainly did know how to keep the two young men alert and ready for anything. Boreas then moved over to the side, allowing Howl enough room to sit next to him. They each took hold of a tassel and tugged three times to test their theory. It was more work than originally anticipated to get the carpet to fly in a smooth manner, but it was well worth the effort. They certainly didn't want to go back to wandering on foot, subjected to the painfully hot sand the endless sun.
"Ready Howl? Ready Nelumbo? On the count of three, let's give Howl's idea a shot."
The two young travelers then tugged the right tassels three times in hope that their theory was correct. Boreas was holding his breath in anticipation.

The carpet hooked steadily around through the air until they'd reoriented themselves to the left of where they'd been going before: success.
[Congratulations! You have completed the puzzle section of the Introduction Stage and your characters are on their way to parts unknown in this endless desert... or have you? You are, at the moment, free to write as you please in this thread. However, please stay on your carpet for the time being -- you never know where your carpet may take you. Please stay alert for further GM guidance.]
