Dreams snatched away so harshly...

At the mention of Patrick, Sarah gave a small wail and threw herself onto Adrian's chest, mumbling incoherently.

"...pregnant...doctor...leaving - He's leaving Adrian!" This last, sole whole sentence was punctuated with a smack to his shoulder before she pulled him into the room and kicked the door closed behind her.

Once they were inside, she let go of him and paced to her bed. "H-he didn't even want m-me before he said he was going! How cruel is that?!" she demanded.

Her thoughts were muddled so that she had forgotten her promise not to tell anyone, though if she were to think of it she wouldn't have felt guilty: Adrian, as Patrick's best friend, would likely know everything already.
But oh, if they'd laughed at her together then she would kill the pair of them!

... Now it's too late.

Adrian was a little bit baffled by that. Doctor? And was she implying that his little Patrick should have wanted her? He frowned. "Sarah, what in the world is going on here? Since when did Patrick owe you anything? Why did he tell you he was leaving? He likes you? What?"

He stood there, quite at a loss as to what to say but determined that he would eventually figure all this out. Even if it took tying them both up and using every interrogation method know to mankind! Oh, not to mention chasing down that doctor guy and doing the same to him. He hated being in the dark.

Then he took a deep breath, shaking his blond hair (The envy of many men) out of his face (similarly coveted). "Sarah, please explain the situation in as well as you can, everything you know. NOW."

Sarah blinked at him, wondering why he demanded to know. Didn't he know all already? Wasn't he in Patrick's confidence at all times?

"L-last night... Patrick brought me to a doctor to see if I really was pregnant...a-and he said that I fainted, which I must have, because I d-don't remember anything else!" She sniffled, shaking her head.
"I-I would have woken up, recalled it if he had had sex with me, wouldn't I? But he didn't - just carried me home and l-left me on the doorstep! He could have at least taken me home to his room, couldn't he?!"

Her bosom heaved with indignation. "I didn't even get to taste him once!" She wailed, glaring at the wall. "And I wanted him for so long too!"

... Now it's too late.

Apparently, drastic measures would be unnecessary. It was obvious enough what had taken place. Patrick had stepped in to save the day again, and of course, had been too sensitive to actually end up having sex with her once the doctor had had his look. And then he wanted to leave, presumably sick and tired of his friend's nonsense. How am I ever to thank him... and is it? Could it be? Patrick did study medicine, could he possibly have guessed right? Am I actually free, thanks to his effort? My god, it makes sense- the doctor was the same at both occasions, I could marry him for this!

"There is no baby, is there? He would not leave me unless he was sure that I was safe. Poor, poor Patrick. I have been so completely unjust towards him."
he sighed, nibbling at his lip out of nervous habit.

At that moment the charm began its work. Sarah had a cramp - a menstrual cramp. Soon blood would come. There would be no doubt as to the existence of a baby.

"Poor Patrick?! I am childless and have no hope of seeing him again, let alone-!" Her words broke off as she doubled over with the force of her cramp - they always hurt terribly, yet until now she had been relieved at the signal of her escape from motherhood.

On this day, however, such confirmation made her want to scream and cry all at once. She pushed at Adrian, shoving him in the direction of her door. "Just leave! Get out of my room and - and don't come back!"

Sarah winced, realising that she was desperately hungry, so food-deprived that it added to the pain of her cramps. Eyes glaring, she moved Adrian out of her way and headed for the kitchen to scrounge the meal she had missed last night, leaving him to find the front door by himself.

Patrick, still huddled in the tree, gave his carvings a considering frown. If I adjust that line there... and make a small indent here...
Holding up the bear to the light, he tilted it to examine every angle, then turned his gaze to the rest of the circus of animals that he'd worked on so contentedly for the last hour.

All that was needed was an impartial, new pair of eyes to appraise them, then he could call this job done - ready to be sent to the lady doctor so that she could judge whether or not they ought to be painted.

Deciding to test Taraneith's words earlier, he spoke softly to the forest around him, closing his eyes and attempting to make it a request, as it wouldn't do to appear commanding when he was the - servant? underling? - of Master Taraneith.

"Master Tar I don't suppose you'd like to come look at these and give me your opinion?" he murmured, eyes still shut peacefully.

Taranieth had spent most of the past half-hour being what most humans would call a 'stalker', right at the forest's edge. The moment the other called, he was there, smiling over his shoulder. "I would indeed... It is a work of art! Oh, Keegan will be unhappy- no dragons. But no matter, you'll make him one someday, I'm sure." he said thoughtfully, and chuckled at the other's shock. Then he kissed him on the cheek. "But the wolf- I think he's about to howl! The fierce and fiery independence of those creatures has always baffled me. In that... it is actually quite moderate! They're territorial, but so gentle with their young! It warms the heart to watch. Just as the sight of you makes mine beat faster..."

He leaned back with a slight sigh, his long blond hair somehow managing to coil around branches without tangling at all as he rested his head on the trunk.

I`ll trap you in a web of delicate white lies.

Adrian was incensed that anyone would underestimate Patrick's worth. "You aren't worthy of licking Patrick's boots!" he said, and then added, "And neither am I."

He walked out, tears welling in his eyes at the thought of his lifelong friend. As he passed his house he thought he saw Patrick in the tree with that doctor - and shaking his head, he continued. I have no right to interfere. he thought sadly I never thought one day I would feel so complete a failure. All that remains is to tell Gabrielle- and enjoy the life that Patrick has so generously provided. It would not do to allow his sacrifice to be in vain.

Patrick felt his cheeks heat at the compliments, ducking his head in a weak attempt to hide behind his hair - it was far too short to provide cover for more than his eyes.
He hadn't expected Taraneith to come that swiftly, but he smiled softly in acknowledgment of the fact that he did like it: no-one had ever really run that fast at his mere call, not even Adrian.

A cough escaped his lips and he lifted his head again. To prevent the mindless staring he could feel beginning - did Master Tar have to pose so gorgeously all the time? It was completely distracting! - Patrick Raphael Smith took a deep breath and picked up the wolf in question.

"So you think the doctor will like her circus, then? As I said, I mainly carve things for her as thanks for her lessons on medicine and she sometimes has them painted."
He paused. "I've never tried a dragon - but I'm willing to, and when I've got it right, then Keegan can have it."

A smile lit his face as he allowed himself to glance at Taraneith, to admire the Fae creature for a moment. "What would you like me to carve for you? I don't promise it'll be perfect, but I can try..."
The young man lifted a finger to gently lift a strand of Taraneith's hair away from the tree, stroking it carefully between his thumb and forefinger. It was unbelievably soft.

Taranieth smiled. "I have no knowledge of human taste- but they are beautiful in my view." he said. "As for me... I think a carving of Keegan will be lots of fun to have around. Speaking of which- He'll want to meet you. Now, please don't be shocked. He's in the shade- he doesn't much like leaving it. Come. And Keegan, don't frighten him!" he called, climbing down and extending a hand to receive Patrick. "He'll be very glad to meet you I'm sure. Make sure you treat him with the respect he deserves, he's more intelligent than both of us put together, I'm sure... He's very expressive in his own way, you'll be able to tell exactly what he thinks of you."

He chuckled, knowing that Patrick would be a little shocked at the sight awaiting him as they stepped into the shadow of the trees. Keegan was sitting, and he looked like a rock- until you noticed the eyes he was now frowning through.

"Patrick, meet Keegan, he is one of my friends. Yes, a dragon. Keegan, this is Patrick, as I'm sure you very well know by now."

Doubts shall doubtless come, sure as the sun sets...

User ImagePatrick inclined his head, then followed Taraneith out of the tree agilely, taking the hand offered to him and clasping lightly.
"I will..." he murmured, blinked hard at the unbidden thought that those words sounded definite, finite - like wedding vows.

Human eyes stared into the eyes of the 'rock', Patrick's mouth making a small 'o'. Then he offered small, shy smile as he held out a hand on impulse - it was how he'd been taught to greet new people respectfully, afterall!

"I'm Patrick Raphael Smith, and -" His eyes widened in horror as he looked over his shoulder in the direction of the tree they'd just left.
"I'm a complete scatter-brain! I left them up there, and now I'm not even sure which tree they were in!" He wailed, scowling at himself. "I do this too often, spend half my time climbing every tree just to find out where I might've left them!"

He then turned back to the dragon and the Faery, certain that they would be staring in either shock or amusement even as his face became pink with embarrassment and shame. He hadn't meant to blurt all of that, especially not when he needed the approval of Keegan.

"U-um... that wasn't exactly how I meant to introduce myself..." he mumbled apologetically, eyes on the forest floor.

The dragon touched the outstretched hand gently with the tip of his snout, approximating a mix of the human handshake and dragon nosebump.

When the boy realized what he had forgotten, Keegan gave his usual little rumbling chuckle and darted off, flying up the tree they had sat in and returning with the sculptures clasped neatly in his paws, claws retracted so as not to damage them.

Taranieth could not retain a small smile, and a slight twinkle in his eye as he handed them over to the boy. What a show-off that dragon is... he thought.

Keegan returned to his spot and looked up at Patrick expectantly. In the perfect little 'what-do-you-say,-Patrick...' posture.

Taranieth bit his lip. This was either going to go over excellently or terribly and he had no idea which it would be. He hoped Patrick had picked up on enough that he wasn't about to treat Keegan like a particularly well-trained dog.

Doubts shall doubtless come, sure as the sun sets...

User ImagePatrick blinked and stared at the figures he was certain he'd lost - he couldn't count how many he'd 'misplaced' in the past, and to have them back made a smile spread over his face.

Slowly, the figurines were placed on the ground so that he had his arms free, then he walked to Keegan and bowed.

"Thank you: if you think you would like one, then I shall attempt a dragon for you - though I may need you to pose - and maybe one day..."

His breath was sucked in sharply as he raised his head to look swiftly between Taraneith and Keegan, eyes wide in wonder for a moment.

Then he went to Lord Taraneith and gently took his hand, tugging to indicate that he wanted the Faery to come with him, to stand beside Keegan. He waited to see whether or not Master Tar would do as he wished, biting his lip as he wondered whether he could ever do justice to the breathtakingly beautiful image in his mind of the carving he wished to create.
That is, if those involved would kindly pose for him...

The dragon, satisfied with the thank you, nodded approvingly.

Then Patrick started to tug at the fae`s arm. Taranieth shrugged and followed, smiling when he realized what the other was about to attempt, though he would rather be paired up with the artist himself. "Am I distractiing you from returning to your friend, the doctor?" he asked, worried that Patrick was once again losing track of his to-do list. "I`m so sorry, I keep popping your bubbles..."

Keegan posed in the traditional "lion" position, a slight twinkle in his eye.

Taranieth chuckled, amused. "You don`t really want to be immortalized in that position, Kee?" he said.

Keegan turned around and stuck out his forked tongue, then curled into a slightly more comfortable position, his head in the lap Taranieth generously provided.

He blew a strand of hair away from his nose, and then kept blowing at it as it kept coming down until Taranieth leaned back onto the tree behind him. They ended up in a sort of mix-up of virgin and the unicorn.

Patrick could do nothing more than gape at them, his mouth wide open as he stared. After a minute, he closed his mouth and nodded. "If I can do justice to it, then that carving would have to be the finest of all..." he murmured, smiling.

Eyes scanned them both thoroughly, taking in every detail before he moved to the pair and kissed Taraneith softly on the cheek. Uncertainty flickered in his eyes before he attempted to very, very gently butt his head into Keegan's nose, hoping that he hadn't offended the dragon as he did so.

"Thank you both. I will try it very soon." He bit his lip. "I would have hugged you Keegan, or kissed your cheek, but I didn't know whether or not you'd like it, and - well - you did nose-butt my hand earlier..."
The teenager offered a very sweet smile that held a hint of apology just in case he had made the dragon angry.

Taranieth heard the muttered comment, though he didn`t say anything. Why put the boy on his guard?

And then the boy kissed him, and he smiled, quickly returning one, just a quick peck. I might have found my mate at last... he thought, watching the boy cutely nuzzle Keegan.

The dragon himself was flattered by the attempt to satisfy him, and in return he raised a paw and held it in the air, to shake.

Taranieth caught on. "He`s flattered, and, I believe, attempting to show you the same respect. He might grumble, but I think he likes you."

Keegan shrugged and waggled his head in a `so-so` way.

Taranieth grinned. And what a fine mate he will make.
