Kincaid was preparing to send a wave of water towards his sister when he finally realized something. It wasn't Reisa. "Oh." He froze in mid-splash to stare at the familiar face. Could it be...was it really her? After all this time?

"Mersi?" He finally managed to speak as he stayed perfectly still in the water. More maturity showed in the male's eyes as he studied Mersi. Something seemed different about her. But he just couldn't seem to figure out what it was exactly. He offered a tentative smile before moving towards the shore. Kincaid's wet bangs hang in his eyes and dripped on his face as he finally asked, "What brings you out this way?"

It was hard to keep her poise in such a situation, hard to keep from turning back and dealing with it herself. She refused to move back in with her parents though... and Brooklyn would be no help. If mother asked where the babies came from, she actually wanted to say that it didn't matter. Or, perhaps, that it did. "Something... important."
So, this was it. Time to let him know, be told to leave, and head home to raise the children. With a sure step, she pulled herself from the brush, exposing her pregnant belly, eyes sharp on the male. "...They're yours. ...I have no doubt."

Kincaid frowned at Mersi as he came wading up to the shore. What could be so important that she had come to him after months of silence? He didn't even know if they had even walked past each other since the 'accident'. So it must be something important. Kincaid just...well he couldn't seem to even imagine the possibilities.

Maybe she was sick or her family were having problems and needed either his sister or his mother's help? Maybe - but wouldn't she have gone straight to them rather than stumbling on him? Kincaid's thoughts were rambling through his mind, until a statement from Mersi made everything go blank.

"You're what?" Kincaid pulled himself up on the shore and refused to look down at the obvious pregnancy, "With my what? Are you serious?" The male was stunned. "Just like that?" He ran a hand through his hair. "Really, Mersi? Mine too? From that..." Kincaid just trailed off and sighed.

Mersi remained in place as Kincaid tried to wrap his head around the announcement, except for a heavy roll of her eyes. “Nooo,” she snipped sarcastically, crossing her arms under her chest. “I bought fabric colored just like my fur and put a bunch of rocks in it to look like I’m pregnant to mess with you. Of course I’m serious!!”
She inhaled deeply to regain the bit of composure that had gone astray. Let him do whatever he was going to do, let him run to whoever that Reisa was, then go home. That’s all she thought she had to do. It was time to be quiet and calm now, to let him figure out what he wanted to do, and then raise… her children. She wanted to glance back at her bulging belly, feeling someone shift within, but kept her gaze on the stupefied male.
Children... A mixture of pleasure, anger, and sadness had been floating through her mind since she had discovered the truth.

Kincaid shook his head at her sarcasm and leaned against the bank wearily. Why had she waited this long? He peeked at her stomach again and frowned, "Why didn't you tell me right away then?" His tail lashed, sending droplets of water everywhere as he shook himself off.

Climbing up to shore he stared at Mersi and without really thinking about it added, "Or what? Did you just think you were gaining weight or something? You can't tell me you didn't know you were pregnant until just recently, Mersi." He shook his head again, "But I just can't believe this. Out of all the things....do you have a healer to help you when the time comes or a mid-wife? Does your family know?" Already he was rambling concerns and plans. "I'll get Reisa..." Kincaid rubbed his forehead and looked at the ground refusing to allow himself to stare at her.

There was one of the many questions of the day. Why not sooner? As she mulled over her answer, she listened to the male’s wonderings. Too bad she didn’t have better answers… She kept careful watch of her diet and had no reason to have suspected simple weight gain. Take it one thing at a time. “Our last encounter didn’t exactly give me encouragement to be open with you about our accidental children.” She said shortly, though winced at her own words. Accidental children. She quickly shook it off and moved on, meeting his stare until he looked to the ground. “I have a healer. She’ll help me out just fine.”
Her family… It had been hard, but her parents knew. “They don’t know who the father is.” She said, now her eyes wanting to fade to the side. No, she had to be strong. She firmed her posture. “I didn’t want to tell them until I knew what part, if any, you wanted in the children’s lives.” And the main question was out there. She knew Kincaid had to be overwhelmed by now. She did her best to be patient, calling on her years of practice. “…You still have a few weeks to think about it. Possibly a month at the latest.” A slight blush pinkened her cheeks. Were they already so close to being born? It only felt like a short time ago that she'd even found out.

"Really?" Kincaid nearly rolled his eyes, "I wonder why our last encounter didn't give you that type of encouragement." He was bitter, but not for himself. But because he had wanted Mersi to be able to forget that accident of theirs so she could move on with her life. Now here she was standing back in front of him - pregnant with his children. His! Not her lover's or her mate's children but his, a stranger from the festival.

Kincaid's gaze darkened. Was she ashamed that he was the father? Certainly they fought and didn't know each other well - but was he really that bad of a person for her to reject even his existence, his role as the father? Though he understood in part why she wouldn't tell her parents. Best to not let them know about him if he had no part in her future. But...

"What do you want from me?" Kincaid finally asked as he locked gazes with Mersi. "Do you want me to abandon my own children? Accidental that they may be...they're....they're still mine."

Ignoring the initial sarcasm, she took the moment that Kincaid used to think to himself to look at the surroundings. The cool river, high trees... If the situation were different, she'd think it was pretty; but now, the trees leaned in, enclosing her- She shook her head. No, the trees were just trees.
His words drew her attention back, eyes catching, boring to her center. “I don’t want anything from you.” She grumbled. Her hand rubbed her sore back, her voice changing to something more docile. She was becoming weary of the back and forth and from the trip out. Abandonment? Did it sound like she was suggesting that? She had just come all this way to find him, the ungrateful little-! “I don’t know, Kincaid!” She barked, putting her hand to her face in embarrassment and turning away. So much for her composure. Her voice lowered dramatically to compensate for the yell, almost too quite now. “They should have their father around… I can’t just force them on you if you don’t want them…” He wasn’t denying the truth though. He was calling them his children. Her tail twitched at the thought, her mood swinging along with her ponytail as she shook her head. “And you won’t be taking them for yourself if you do want them.”
“I can care for them on my own. I’ll have my parents. But, if you want to help…” Her heart was starting to pound again. No matter what, she was going to look bad. She would be the one who had children without a mate. Girls like that were considered… but how many of them had the lame but truthful excuse that a plant made them do it? She snorted sourly to herself.

"Nothing at all?" Kincaid's voice softened as he seemingly gained control over his roaring emotions. Frowning the foxtaur reached out to Mersi as she turned away but he only clutched at the empty air in indecision. What should he do? Surely Mersi wanted nothing to do with him - but...

"You know I only chased you away to help you." He whispered as he walked up beside her. Kincaid stood just a breath away from Mersi, close enough to feel the warmth that radiated from her body yet his gaze was glued to the side. He focused on a small rosebush even as he spoke to her. "You don't have to force anything on me. I just...didn't even believe that this could happen to us. If I'd known earlier about this, Mersi...I-I..." What would he have done really? Kincaid didn't know. But he definitely would not have chased her away like he had.

"I'm not going to leave you alone with this." Kincaid finally added as he peeked at her from the corner of his golden gaze. "It's my fault just as much as it is yours that we have...children." What an odd thought - he was a father already? Out of all his siblings he was the first. Surely, he had believed that Reisa or Kenji would have been the first to become parents.

Why did he have to stand so close? Wasn't it awkward enough as it was? Unexpectedly, she felt more calm from him being so close instead of feeling smothered. Though her emotions were settling as the male spoke, her blood continued to race. So... he was really going to help...
"Your... family?" She asked softly, still keeping her face turned away. Would they be as understanding as her parents, or would they outcast a son with illegitimate children? And what would they think of her? ...Would they welcome the coming children?
She flinched as a sharp twitching started in her side. Stress... That was all. She turned her head slightly, starting off the climb with the male's paws. She was in much the same place as Kincaid, amazed that she was the first of her siblings to be having children.

"My family?" Kincaid chuckled low and shook his head before offering Mersi an amused smile. "Mother and Father are both crazy lovers - any babies in our family are always welcomed." Though he did wonder...what would his parents say about this? Sure, mates having babies were an amazing thing...but what about unmated pairs? But he knew - just knew - that they would love Mersi.

His tail twitched before he looked carefully over the pregnant female. "Should we be out in this heat...with you in your condition, Mersi?" He asked softly reaching out to touch her shoulder. Maybe they should find a shaded place or find somewhere to go. He winced, if he could help they would not go to his place underground because well...everything started there.
PostPosted: Thu Jun 03, 2010 7:33 pm

Though she didn't see the smile, she heard it in his voice. It was a little encouraging, but she would only believe it when she saw it. And... he said the babies would be welcome... Would she? She frowned. Not that it would matter. Kincaid agreed to be part of the children's lives, not hers. No reason for them to consider her at all....
Another pain snagged her side. She just clenched her jaw, flicking her ears at his suggestion. It couldn't be the babies... The healer said another month...
She finally looked back up at the male, inadvertently flinching from his reaching hand. "Some shade would be good. A drink of water would be better." She said gently. He really was trying... And had handled the news better than she had thought he would. She could try harder to be pleasant.

With a small frown Kincaid pulled his hand back to his side. That was right, she was only being civil for the sake of their children. Their children...the thought still rang in his mind and despite the obvious the foxtaur just couldn't seem to grasp the fact that it really was true.

"Anyway, we'll just climb up this path here and you can rest under a willow tree that's near the stream up ahead." His hand clutched around the mostly full jug of water before he steeled himself to get close to Mersi so he could hand it over to her. "Here. Drink as much as you want." Letting go of the jug Kincaid jogged up the path in front of Mersi so he could make sure that it was okay further along. It'd been a while since he walked this actual path.
PostPosted: Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:52 am

Taking the water, she swallowed a few gulps, cold to her throat. Once Kincaid had gone down the path, the breath she had been holding gasped out of her, eyes locked on where the male had gone. The jug of water was clutched tightly to her chest as she suddenly felt very alone.
The pain in her side was increasing quickly, and spreading along her back. As much as she tried to shake it off, following after Kincaid, her eyes started to water. If this was what she was starting to suspect it was, she was going to give that healer a piece of her mind!

Everything looked like it had before. Kincaid gave a breath of relief as he looked to the old willow tree. A small frown flickered over his features though. Once some time ago a home had been here. His mom had raised herself here along with her adopted children. What had it been like for his mom to move and get settled in with dad? Were Reisa and Kenji unexpected babies too? Did she miss being on her own or was she grateful for finding a mate and having a family? So many questions ran through the young foxtaur's mind before he turned back towards the path.

After he nearly slipped again Kincaid realized how bad the path had gotten over the years. "Mersi!" He called out as he peered down towards the other fox, "It's a bit slick so be careful!" His golden eyes were worried as he watched her. Please, please don't fall.
