I'd like it to be a flying city because of the romance of the idea. It's one of the main things that drew me to the guild in the first place.
As for what it does up there, that should be obvious. It occupies the unique role of Migratory Settlement. See the world from your back yard. Going slow is actually a plus to this as it lets you really explore the places below while never being too far from necessary resources. If you think about it, the concept has a particularly Victorian sensibility to it.

I agree, I want an aircity because of the romance, and my own completely impractical imagination and love of fantastic such and suchs!
In the end, I'm happy with whatever, provided it's large and BEAUTIFUL. I just think an aircity would be SUPER BEAUTIFUL, as opposed to merely beautiful.
Ahem. However, I can understand your concern about the logistics- I see nothing wrong with a slow moving city. And couldn't the city have engines or somesort on all sides so it could manuevur, and instead of turning around simply reverse?

Right, I'm done.
Flying city in the shape of a ship, very majestic, coming right up.
Anyone dare to produce a better drawing that mine?

I haven't really been following the recent city developments due to general inactivity. I take it we're getting a flying city? It's a bit of a shame I've been inactive but my one vote wouldn't really have made a difference.
I think I'd personally prefer the airship approach, something along the lines of Castle Wulfenbach because it's frankly fantastic. Whilst it wouldn't be very manoeuvrable it would still be very impressive and possibly intimidating. The design would obviously be quite different from that of the aforementioned castle, much more awesome and not as evil-rulerish. It could even have hanging gardens somewhere too! O:
I'm also rather drawn to the underwater sections which would be present at the island, I think there's a certain romance in walking through vast underwater glass domes, perhaps seeing the rare giant squid swim past and let's not forget the joy in conducting manic experiments while some sea creatures look on with a horrified fascination.
Nonetheless I'm quite looking forward to the flying city design as I'm sure it shall be spectacular. When you say in the shape of a ship are you referring to the gorgeous 18th century ones? They're simply stunning so I'm sure the anachronism will look divine.

I think in the universe of the Anachronism there's room for a city with underwater installations. How about that Cog Island we brought up in the RP?

A flying city? With airships as detachable islands perhaps?
I'd like a flying city because it's somewhat more massive and all-inclusive. Cities have many different districts, as does this guild.
And a flying city has the added advantage of being able to move its people about the land, to explore and set new boundaries, all while maintaining a home-like atmosphere, that a ship, being a travel vessel, can not provide.

I agree with you to a point, almost anywhere can feel homely but a city would certainly feel more so than a ship. Of course a ship can also have different districts, but again that may work better in a city. Don't get me wrong, I am rather warming to the idea of having the Anachronism as a flying city, not that I had much against it in the first place.
Alas I'm not familiar with the Cog Island since I haven't RPed in the guild.

I like airship, because it promotes the freedom of steampunk, and choice, you don't have to live all together, you can be where you like when and where you like.
And there is alot of freedom of choice in steampunk, its certainly original.

I say why not a bit of both? It could be a sky city, but one with its own airship docks. For trade, war, plunder, or exploration it would need ships of its own, and of course crews to pilot them.

I have to give my support of a flying city.
although unlike the Laputa design.
My airborne city design was a bit more futuristic, but is could be steamed up a bit.
You have a city is kept aloft not by propellers or balloons... no, but by massive turbines. (a cowling keeps people from falling in.) The turbine is able to provide powerful lift for the city.
the turbines are what the city is built around. to move, jets of steam fire from nozzles located at the edge.
it has two docks. one has far more supports, and is on the bottom... the other is a network of platforms on the top. when in the air, both serve as airship docks, but when the anachon lands in the water, the bottom serves as submarine docking!
Note that the place is run by steam. when it lands in the water, it sucks in more for fuel.
It keeps itself afloat, not by balloons... rather, it is ingeniously designed to create hundreds of pockets of air when landing. (*this is the underside of the building platforms.)
Now this design has some issues that can be met. #1 is fire. the city itself would have some kind of burning inside to produce large quantities of steam. this is met by 2 ways, trading, and oceanic oil drilling. The anachon's sub fleet can easily drill on the ocean floor and bring it back, leaving a structure on the ocean floor for later access. (or better yet, install an entire undersea lab.)
As for a tropical island, simply have a crescent island. make the radius of the inside curve the same as the city. the city then pulls into the island and docks, making it seem like a round island city, complete with sub bays and laboratories.
In order to power the city on the uisland, we could use geothermal heat, plugging the steam system into the islands to power without losing fuel.
This design has little mass (why? because the "body" of the anachronism is either lightweight material or air, protected by the exterior of buildings), but lots of surface area, making it difficult to harm by weather.
That is my proposal, if large steam turbines are feasible. Either way, this pattern can indeed go adventuring, and any body of water is a landing zone. It can go on land, but... it doesn't look as pretty.
EDIT: this may have a bit of problems in it, for, like a typical spark, I thought this up in minutes.
