crimson Dawn flushed at the compliment. She knew she was attractive, even as a child, and that was the source of her confidence. She could and had used her looks to get what she wanted, though she avoided the adults that worked too easily on. However, very few people had ever made note of her mind. Outside her family, even fewer people could see past her looks. She wasn't sure how to handle such a compliment, though she was very happy for it. Still flushing, she decided to react the same way she would to a comment about her appearence. She preened.
"Of course you are," she retorted flippantly. Then she puttered out of steam. How did one boast of intelligence or quick wit?

Zakiel noted her blush and smiled. So he had caught her off guard...good. "Unused to compliments regarding intelligence, minan ainaak? That bodes well for me, as I would rather have no others find the gem that you surely are and try to steal you from me." His strides were made to match hers so that they could walk side by side. He marveled at how fluidly she moved, at how easy it was for him to change his stride to glide beside her.

Her flush deepened as annoyance tried to spark. She didn't like that he noticed things about her that he shouldn't. Like the fact that she wasn't used to such compliments. She was also too much of a free spirit to take the possessiveness she heard in his voice well.
"I think we need to set some ground rules, if we're really stuck with each other," she decided.

That... made Crimson Dawn suspicious. If he was making this concession for her, then she had a feeling she really wouldn't like his rules. She quickly racked her brain for any possible issues she might have.
"Rule one, you don't tell me who I can and can't talk to or be friends with," she decided. That seemed to be an important one. She didn't really have many friends, but that didn't mean she didn't like meeting new people and being friendly with them.

"Rule three, you stay at least five feet away from me at all time," she decided. She didn't have so much trouble thinking when he wasn't that close to her, and he wasn't that scary when she didn't notice how big he was.

"The only thing I'm in danger from is you, so you'll keep your distance," she waved a hoof at him as though to ward him off a bit. She emphasized her point but putting a few extra inches between them.

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, "I am flattered that you think me so frightening, but I assure you, the only danger you are in from me is really no danger at all. You may be in danger because of me, but never from me, unless you count all those times I want to hold you close and feel your heart beat beneath mine."

There were so many things wrong with that statement that Crimson Dawn didn't know where to begin. She started by inching away from him a bit more, watching him wryly.
"What do you mean, in danger because of you?" she demanded. "Are you like some mafia guy or something? If you're so gung ho for my protection then you definitely should keep your distance! And there's going to be no holding! None! Zero! Zip! Nada! Zilch! That no touching males rule includes you, or it doesn't count at all."

"I am a male Carpathian. You are my lifemate, yet unbound. Should word get out, others like me will come, perhaps to challenge my claim and take you for themselves, or the undead will come to try and regain their lost souls with your light. By not taking you and binding you, I am doing your safety a great disservice." He stepped closer, "Though if you wish to never feel my touch as well...I can do my best to keep myself from physically doing so." He smiled again, smug and confident as he clamped down on the urge to snatch her up and take her back to his home.

She took a step away from him, vainly trying to maintain what little distance she had managed to put between them. "So basically, because you're hanging around, I'm going to be really popular?" Somehow, he made it sound a lot worse than she did.
