"Haha!" she said triumphantly, stopping in front of her father, her hands on her hips, "You do like her! Of course, I don't know how hard it would be to give someone 'attractive' a gift." Mattie had a devilish grin on her face, this was turning out wonderful. Just wonderful.
"Yeah!" she said, "He's been with her ever since I was a baby..." she thought about the Naga that he called his son. "Yeah...ever since I was a baby..."she said even more quieter. Oh how Nagas terrified her.

Aubrey scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably. Was Mattie really trying to talk about him relationships? Not only that, but about trying to get him into one! This was supposed to be her day, not about him and his commitment fears.
He saw an out when she went quiet, a way to change the subject, but his relief quickly turned to concern. "What is it?" She seemed to be recalling a memory. Had that male done something to hurt her when she was younger? If he had...

"What?" Mattie perked up, trying to cover off her fear, "Nothing! Nothing!" she grabbed her father by the arm, dragging him along, "Now let's get something for Aimee Papa! She'll probably look good in everything because she's so pretty. What do you think?" it wouldn't do well for Aubrey to know that she was terrified of Riome's adoptive son.

Aubrey went along in a few startled steps before setting his hooves. "Oh, no. Don't try to pull that on me." He said, though part of his mind was unable to resist imagining Aimee in something pretty, something that maybe he had bought for her. More than pretty though, she deserved something gorgeous, rich, elegant. Something he could never hope to afford most likely. The rest of his mind focused on Mattie's mood swing. "Something was bothering you there. If there's a problem, you can tell me. It'll make you feel a little better to talk about it, and I could help with whatever it is."

"Pull what on you?" she said innocently, looking as if nothing was wrong. Mattie shook her head, continuing to look innocent, "Nothing's wrong! Really!" there was no point in making her father worry over her. What mattered most was his love life. "Now what do you want to get her Papa?"

Aubrey crossed his arms stubbornly, looking at the teen. Maybe nothing is wrong now, but something was wrong then, and before. She brought up her childhood, and she went distance, quiet. Very un-Mattie like, which was why he was pushing a little. His little girl should never have that worry on her face if he could help it.

"Papa." she said, pulling at his arm, "Really. There's nothing wrong. Now let's forget about this and have fun. Pleaase?" Mattie frowned, trying to look serious, "Or I'm going to go home and then we won't have any fun at all."

Now he had options to weight. He knew neither of them wanted to end the day so soon. They wanted time together, and she wanted that dessert waiting at the tavern. Yet, he wanted to know what had upset her. Was it worth risking a whole day to themselves?
"You're as stubborn as your mother." He muttered. He searched quickly for an honest smile, finding it in the memory of Aimee pinching Matilda's cheeks. "Come on." He said, showing his smile and uncrossing his arms as he walked on. "Lets find something nice for you."

The teen beamed, and immediately started to prance forward, much like a show horse, "I'm not that stubborn am I?" she asked, knowing full well she could be at times.
"Let's see..." she tapped a finger to her chin and looked around, "Something nice..."

Basking in the light of his daughter's smile, Aubrey mearly shook his head. As if he was going to confirm that! She'd probably enjoy the fact!
The little stalls started getting closer together as they got nearer the center of the shopping hub. What would Mattie like other than food? She probably wouldn't be impressed by a stuffed doll any more. "So, what's going on in that noggin of yours? Thinking of the perfect thing to pick out?"

"...I dunno what I want." she said slowly, feeling a little confused at the items that weren't food. "There's nothing to eat..." Mattie glanced around at the pots and clothes that were for sale. "Mama's good at this stuff." she peered at her father shyly, "Are you?"

Aubrey shook his head again. "We're not looking for food. We just ate, and dessert is patiently waiting at the tavern. We'll grab the food on the way home for dinner." All this interest in food. Maybe she would become a cook like him someday?
"Good at what? Shopping?" He shrugged. "I go for what I need. The only special shopping I've ever done is when I get you things, or if Flora asks me to get something specific for the tavern." He cocked his head, looking at the shops. "I suppose you just look. If you see something interesting, look closer." He hoped it was close enough, but he usually knew what he was looking for when he shopped.

"But that's the only thing I really know about..." Mattie stuck out her tongue playfully, "So what're we going to have for dinner tonight? Pie? Cake?" she asked, thinking that Aimee's dessert would be their dessert.
The teen looked at her father with interest, "Get me what?" she asked, nudging him slightly, "Ooh. Are you going to get me something now, but you're not going to tell me right?"

Aubrey sighed. "Cake and pie are desserts. not dinners. I don't know what dinner is yet."
He looked down at the nudge. "What? I've gotten you plenty of things. I got that whole bedroom set for whenever you stayed over nights." Then he smirked. "And no, I'm not going to tell you if I might or might not get you anything today. Like I said, just look around. If you see something that catches your eye, look closer."

"But we can make them as dinners."
Mattie crossed her arms, pretending to pout, looking quite like her mother, "That means you're going to get me something, but its going to be a big surprise right?" her pout immediately flipped into a smile at the thought, "I'll see if there's something I like then." uncrossing her arms, Mattie trotted ahead of him a few yards, looking around curiously to see if there was anything that would catch her interest.
