Merya made a face. "Ugh, I thought it must be something like that. Disagreeable old wherface that he is... - Oh, yes, I spotted her!" She was instantly grinning again, delighted by the gold firelizard and not at all fazed by C'mor's little revelation. So what if he'd stolen something? That was promising, even. She'd just have to teach him to be better at not getting caught... "I didn't like to remark, though - you know, everyone does, so I've always thought it must get tiresome. This little monster - " She pointed to her own shoulder. " - is Beru."

"Squeep!" said Beru cheerfully, chomping down on a large piece of meat and shaking her head to tear a piece free. She was getting the hang of doing this without pulling off more than she could chew.

"As you can see, she enjoys managing her food her own way," Merya chuckled. "I've found it's best just to leave her to it; provided there's not so much she can gorge herself she's fine to eat on her own, and she does have such fun doing it." On cue, Beru gave a little "sqrrrr..." and narrowed her eyes as she wrestled with the meat. Merya giggled at her. "See? Isn't she the sweetest thing?"

Surprisingly, Anidanth was somewhat comforted by Naedreth's prideful statement. This was partially because she'd missed the point of it. I do not mind being looked at, but being stared at is not nice. I am glad that you are bigger, so I can hide behind Mine and they will look at you instead. She gently headbutted Merya's leg, and crooned quietly when a little pale hand reached down to rub her eyeridges.

Upon leaving the Sands, he had joined the flow of visitors retiring to the Feast, keeping his chin up, but avoiding eye contact with anyone immediately around him. A less than convincing smile was plastered on his face; let them celebrate, celebrate with them, but he had no interest in reliving the Hatching with the crowds chattering about all that had just taken place. He would enjoy the food, skim the new Weyrlings for familiar faces, and perhaps volunteer himself in the kitchen for the rest of the evening. Celebrating was not for him tonight.

Food would make him feel better, he reasoned, and made for the line fixing their plates. Ceanandin's steps faltered as he realized the approach would put him immediately being a newly Impressed bronzerider and his dragonet, and stumbled as the sudden stop caused a man moving in to line to bump him. He apologized, and continued forward to stand in line behind O'asis.

He was stuck between a dragonet and a private conversation. This now-weyrling had stood beside him on the Sands, and the dragonet had picked him instead. Ceanandin really would rather not think about the bronze. So he fixated on the conversation instead; he couldn't help but eavesdrop. However, he quickly decided that the subject wasn't necessarily a secret one, and felt much less guilty about listening it. An illness could move through the weyr easily, with how overcrowded the place was for the time, and would easily explain the collapses during the Hatching. An illness that affected dragons....did not bear thinking about.

"Nothing," Zara said, the word short and tense. "Absolutely nothing but luck. If an Istan dragon caught some sort of illness, it would spread just as fast as this is likely to spread to the people. Thankfully...I don't think dragons get sick. Not that kind of sick, anyways." Hopefully. Shaking her head to attempt to clear her head, she attempted a smile. "But this isn't the sort of talk you want to hear at your Hatching, I'd wager."

It wasn't hard to catch the whispers and mutters around here. Some sort of sickness... and F'sey had it? He was the Weyrlingmaster, wasn't he? O'asis brooded over this thoughtfully. There were a couple faces that he'd noticed missing... like Kyllae's....

Someone should've seen this coming, after that lice plague. It was the harbinger to warn of overcrowding, how quickly something could spread through the Weyr. And nobody had realized it, it seemed; himself included.

O'asis Mine, Uktenath's voice filled his mind, tell me what you are thinking.

"I'm thinking...." O'asis began, then grimaced. "Shards. I'm thinking that getting everybody together for a celebration might have been dimglowed." If this thing was serious enough to lay so many people flat already, then the last thing the Weyr needed was to throw everyone into a room together for close company. There was no saying who might be contagious....

Uktenath shifted his wings, the faintest sign of the dragonet's unease. Is there danger?

O'asis exhaled loudly, folding his hands behind his neck. "Hard to say... the Healers would know, I bet." The bronze looked up at him, patiently urging. "... We should find someone to ask."

This was to Uktenath's satisfaction. They should find out what was wrong. It was very important that he and His be aware of what was going on in the Weyr, so that they could prepare for it properly. He let out the smallest hint of a positive chirp, and turned his sights upward.

Galliath, he asked, while O'asis began searching the room for someone that would have an in with the Healers, do you know what is making people fall?

They are sick. Mine believes that they have caught an illness, and it has spread throughout the Weyr. Mine is not sick yet, but Ialluth's is, and Others. Galliath tried to answer the young bronze as clearly as he could, somehow feeling that more formality was required when dealing with Uktenath. How they had gotten sick, the brown dragonet did not know. Nor did he know how to heal them. He was not a healer. Surely Uktenath's would know more? Galliath could see that he was with one that S'van identified as a healer. Fuxith's, the dragonet corrected himself. Miith, I am up here, see? Up on the ledge, above!

((Apologies for the pathetically short response. I will try to come up with something more later on.))

As reasonably as he could manage, O'asis answered, "It isn't the sort of talk that I'd want to hear anywhere, but it's better than being in the dark, eh?" There was something in his eyes brooding now, though, plain enough now that others than his own dragon could see he was thinking hard on something. He had an idea of what he'd be doing with his free time, now that there wasn't much a market for lice cures....

Thank you, Galliath, Uktenath addressed him curtly, and broke his attention elsewhere. He was beginning to understand the situation now - at least, he thought he was - but he was still unsure of what it was that O'asis was thinking. Mine, can you fix the people who have fallen?

O'asis glanced at the dragonet, startled, and shook his head. "No, that's a Healer's job."

Then there is nothing we can do. Not question now, but fact. They could not fix the problem, ergo.... But there was something still in O'asis's eyes, which gave him pause. Mine, there is not. Because we cannot fix them.

Sensing that Uktenath was getting confused - shards, that was so strange, to get an inkling like that without any reason! - O'asis smiled to His, confident and reassuring, and nodded. "For now, Uktenath. Just for now."

The little bronze might have wanted to press him further, but this was no time to be talking of such things that were in his mind - and so it was clearly time to turn his attention to some other thing. From the corner of his eye, O'asis saw that they had an eavesdropper; and turning, he grinned at Ceanandin. "Hey, I remember you! From the Sands!" If he could avoid an awkward moment with Uktenath by inflicting it on someone else, well then, that was just what it meant to be a dragon daddy!

From what he could tell of the young dragonet- not that it was much, mind you- she seemed satisfied with his petting, and he found it easier to relax. By a bit, anyway. Vaguely, he wondered what it must be like to have such an eager, friendly little dragon bonded to you- surely, someone with such thoughts could brighten even the coldest rider a bit.

When Lernaeth moved back to her rider, Anont finally shifted his attention to her from the dragon. She wasn’t overtly feminine, and was a bit short… cute was what guys used to describe her, right? Shards, he was really bad at dealing with girls. Thankfully, she didn’t seem terribly offput by how incredibly awkward he was- or, if she was, she was hiding it well. Watching quietly as she seemed to focus on Lernaeth again, Anont realized that he really did need to get around the weyr more. Badly, from the looks of it.

“Nimwae? That’s a nice name,” he added quickly- then, realizing how awkward that was, inwardly groaned. He opened his mouth to amend something about Impression, and if she was going to shorten her name at all, when she beat him to the conversation. Sighing in relief, it took Anont a moment longer than it should’ve to register that he’d been told his hands didn’t feel like lips.

“…What?” Blinking a few times in utter confusion, Anont furrowed his brow slightly, totally ignorant of the dragon or the rest of the conversation. Glancing in terrible worry between his hands and Nimwae, the poor boy’s brain went into serious overtime. Were hands supposed to be like lips…? Had he really messed them up that much with carrying barrels, and the like? Oh shells, he totally had. Frowning at his own mistake, he was barely jogged out of his thoughts by the arrival of another- looking up just in time to see her smile.

“Oh, uhm. …Hello.” He spoke quietly, less self-assured now than he had been a while ago. His hand would’ve been offered to her had he not been worrying about its similarity to a pair of lips. Trying to smile past the nervous awkwardness, he instead gave a small wave.

“I, uh. …Anont. S’nice to meet you.”

Aaaw was E'si frowning? Somebody needed a hug! Nandeli, however, was not going to risk her own body to do so. But that didn't mean she couldn't volunteer somebody else. "Look at that frown! Tsk tsk! I think somebody needs a hug~ Any takers? Come on, he's pretty cute." Quickly glancing around the crowd that surrounded them, her eyes landed on the newly-Impressed brownrider. E'si hadn't smited him yet, so he was as good as any. "You there!" She pointed at N'tos, "With the nice looking brown! You should hug him! It'll make him feel better." He he he.

Leaving the greenrider and the brownrider to their hug, she turned her attention to the newest female greenrider to join their little circle. A once-Candidate, but not one she knew particularly well. Ah well, she could fix that now that they were both riders. "Thank you! Congratulations on Impressing as well! We'll see you around in the Weyrling lessons!" She couldn't wait to go to those. F'sey was going to be the best teacher ever. Judging by the look on her face, the girl didn't seem too happy to be in the circle, so Nandeli let her go without asking too many questions. There would be lots of time to meet her later. Besides, she had Dorin to deal with.

"I know a great many things, Dorinelic! You should know that!" She replied with a bright smile. At least he hadn't blushed about the gay greenriders this time. Perhaps one of them had already taken him to bed. She would have to look into that. "And if a goldrider invites you back? Well, I'd say you must know something very important, and you should tell her right away. Otherwise she might feed you to her dragon!" Reneneth raised her head and obligingly opened her mouth to show off her teeth. Nandeli provided the sound effects. "Rawr! See? Dangerous!"

The gold returned to the flits, listening to what Ailurath had to say. Such adorable little creatures. And so small! They are very interesting creatures. I would very much like Mine to have her own. Where did Yours get the little brown one?

He was found out. "Yeah." Ceanandin managed to fight off a grimace and force a smile in its place. He stalled briefly by transferring a couple of slices of roast herdbeast from the platter to his plate, but afterward found himself still in line, still standing behind the new bronzerider. Clearing his throat, he grasped for a subject that wasn't himself and ended up nodding towards the dragonet. "Congratulations on Impressing. What's his name?"

It was an awful start, but the mention of the little bronze should be able to distract the weyrling. The last thing Cean wanted to do was to relive the Hatching, but perhaps focusing on the dragon as a dragon, as the here-and-now instead of the earlier-this-evening, would make it easier.

Asceth lifted his body up, as if to measure up to Jessan's comment. He crooned with pleasure at the mention of meat. Like any other, he did enjoy his food. Nice.

"Mm?" He tilted his head back, when he heard himself being addressed. It was the girl that had impressed the gold, if Notos remembered corectly. The request made him raise a eyebow, taking another glance at the boy he was supposed to 'hug'. Hmm. Did he really want to get mauled?

How would it hurt? Notos broke out into a broad grin, staring at Nandeli. Haha, he would probably get murdered for this. "You know I can't refuse a gold-rider." He sounded apologetic, but he was anything but as he hooked an arm around E'si. Not quite a hug but ehhhh, he wouldn't push his luck that far. "Any happier?" He asked, grinng to the green rider.

That may not be a good idea.. Asceth warned his rider, calmly.

But it was a gathering though. The point of it was to celebrate and enjoy! If worst came to worst, he could probably make a speedy escape to J'riar and Jessan!

Oh Faranth… someone was hugging E’si. It wasn’t much of a hug, but he had exploded from less contact before. Very, very casually, Mal glanced around, wondering if there was a decent escape route that would take him out of blast radius. Sure, a fallen Weyrlingmaster was important and all, but it wasn’t exactly a personal problem. An explosive Harper could easily be a very personal problem.

“Tell you what,” he murmured, partly to himself and partly to S’van. “If we flip over that table over there fast enough, I bet it could provide just enough shelter so we’d both die a horrible death, but at a slightly later time than everyone else.”

By now, Aeron discovered what everyone else had realized: that there were no treats. The treats were a lie.

"Uktenath," O'asis replied. He probably wasn't trying to force that tone of blissful happiness onto Cean; it just came so naturally, like that soft little sigh that followed it up.

Aware that there was now someone else taking up the attention of His, Uktenath began to examine the young candidate. O'asis Mine, who are you speaking to?

"Oh, this is...." The bronzerider trailed off, staring at Ceanandin. "... I don't know your name, do I?" he realized slowly, disbelieving it. How in the name of Faranth had he not come to meet with this boy before? Anyone who had enough guts to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him out on the Sands like that, he'd better have a name for!

He stuck out his hand. "I'm O'asis, and that's my friend Zara there. You?"
PostPosted: Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:24 pm

"Lernaeth," Hanya repeated the name and bobbed a shallow curtsey to the young dragon. "It's a very pretty name," she added, still slightly awkward to be addressing the dragon so forthrightly. She knew they understood human speech and were incredibly well-spoken, but there was still the fact that they were dragons and she was not a dragonrider. Somewhat distracted by those thoughts, and certainly not running on full brain capacity to begin with, she only paid attention when Anont spoke.

Looking up, she assessed him quickly and decided, like she did with nearly every human of the male persuasion, that he was most certainly worth her time. "It's nice to see you too, Nimwae. And wonderful to meet you, Anont. Congratulations again, Nimwae." She paused and then gave Anont another glowing smile. He seemed shy, or awkward. Either way, Hanya wanted him to be completely certain that she wasn't one to be awkward around. She could be trusted to be charming, always.

"I'm Hanya," she said. "I'm not sure I've met you before, I'm sorry. Have you been here long?" she asked, suddenly shamefully aware of her own ignorance of people. She should really make the point to make more friends.

"Nice to meet you," Zara added, dipping her head in a nod of acknowledgement. She recognized Ceanandin from the sands, if barely--with people dropping like flies, the mauling, and everything else, she'd been fairly distracted. Speaking of distractions, the Candidate himself was a welcome one from the previous topic of discussion. Education was good. It would help to arm people with knowledge, and it was true that this illness represented the dire risk inherent in such overcrowding. But if it wasn't handled carefully, the stress could cause even greater risk.

Stressed people got sick more easily.

...

He was going to snap, and it was not going to be cute, or pretty. It was going to be a I-am-going-to-rip-your-head-off kind of breaking point.

At least it is a girl. I could do with one less of them! Miith encouraged, not exactly blind to her bonded's anger, but she was getting used to his little outbursts every now and again. It was part of being E'si, and while it faintly worried her, she would manage.

E'si sent a malicious glare to the newly Impressed queenrider, silently wishing he hadn't congratulated her, because this no-glow couldn't even tell that he did not want a hug and he would not take a hug. If anyone thought otherwise, he'd take great pleasure in proving them wrong. Of course, he was still exercising a great deal of restraint. He couldn't very well physically harm Nandeli, nor did he really want to. He wanted her to leave him alone, and that was that.

"Faranth!" he cursed at her when she began to rope N'tos in to 'cheering him up', because shells, he could tell with one look at the boy that he'd listen to her. He stiffened as N'tos approached him, eyes narrowing to mere slits as an arm came around to wrap around his shoulders. It was very possible that he growled, a low, threatening note in his voice. "No, and if you do not get away this instant I'll make sure you regret it." But that was all he would do, threaten. He wasn't dimglowed enough to carry through with his threats.

Poor N'tos was just dimglowed enough to listen to Nandeli. He'd teach him to not make the same error again. With a grunt he pulled away from N'tos, rubbing his arm as if he had been burned by Thread from where the new Weyrling had touched him.

N'tos didn't intrude further, rather entertained by the green rider's anger. "Life would be a lot more enjoyable if you didn't get mad." He imparted the unwanted advice with a maddening grin. He didn't take E'si's threats to heart, although he would have to learn to be more wary. But that simply wasn't in N'to's personality!

Strolling over to Nandeli, his hand on her head, as he leaned down next to her. He figured that talking to her was fine, since she had sent him on a potentially life threatening mission anyways. "I don't think he quite enjoyed that." He laughed, wondering what her intended outcome had meant to be. "I didn't get skewered though." He added thoughtfully, glad for that prospect. It would have cost him a visit to the already crowded infirmary.

This was belated, but he didn't know either of the names of the people he was talking to. "So, do I get the pleasure of hearing your names? Or do I have to bribe it out of you? I'n N'tos." He introduced himself extending a hand to Dorenelic, and giving both Nandeli and Dorenelic a warm smile.
