Unfortunately sleep didn't keep Jackie for long, it was probably only a half hour or so before she came to. She smelled like man's deodorant and cologne, and her once well kept hair was a mess. With slowly steady movements she sat up and got out of bed, if she couldn't sleep than she shouldn't keep still. That would only led to bad thoughts and worse ideas.

The girl stepped into the hallway and saw that the next door down was open. Her makeup was a mess and she looked unkempt but she wanted to see who would be living at her side so she approached the open door and knocked lightly. The sound of her knuckled on the wood was crisp and dry.

"Hello?" She asked. What she saw was a body facing away from her running his hands over a table, a walking stick on the floor and a new opportunity to make friends and take her mind off of the worst. She stepped into the room and walked over to the boy, her stockinged feet making no sound on the carpeted floor.

"My name's Jackie, I'm living next door. Room three." She introduced herself hoping that he wouldn't try and judge her or anything for her current state. Her voice was a low and as creamy as always but held a hint of the sorrow that she kept buried inside of her heart.

*edit!*

Goosebumps pimpled Devon's skin, the reaction he got when someone had approached him from behind without his ears picking it up. His hand left the smooth table that he guessed would be his new desk, and he ran his slim hands over his arms to smooth out his skin from the uncomfortable bumps. Slowly, he turned as to not trip, and smiled to where he had heard the small feminine voice.

"Hello, I'm Devon. It's nice to meet you," he greeted as he walked slowly towards her with a smile gracing his lips. "Did you just arrive?" he questioned with curiosity as his eyebrows furrowed over his clear crystal eyes.

Jackie's smile faded when she saw the boy's face he was blind. She stopped for a moment to keep from saying anything accidentally offensive and took a small step back, bumping into the bed frame. She hadn't expected that at all. Was this a home for disabled kids to? She bit her bottom lip then started to speak.

"Devon, what a pretty name... I knew this girl named Devon once; she was out of this world gorgeous. Tall and blonde, she was quick with a smile and a kind word. I think I could say I she was my first love, but she didn't know it." Jackie chuckled hoping that he got it. She sat down on the bed that was touching the backs of her legs and crossed her ankles.

"And yes, I'm staying next door, The first on to the right. " She stretched her long arms over her head now able to relax a little, with the knowledge that at least this kid wouldn't judge her for looking so messy. He might judge her for smelling like barber shop though.

Devon's smile widened as he heard the kind voice, happy to know that unkind words weren't pouring past her lips when she saw his condition. The creak of the bed frame reached his ears, causing him to realize that although she wasn't saying anything about it, she was still startled. This caused a chuckle to bubble up from his throat.

As she spoke of her love, the mention of her having feelings for someone of the same sex didn't even come off as a concern to him. From his unique difference in society, he had learned to appreciate those who were different as well; therefore, it came off as what most would call normal to him.

"I've never had a love before," he mentioned as he felt the bed spread below him and sat down next to her. A smell familiar to him caressed his nose and caused his vacant eyes to dance in happiness. He pressed on with his story, disregarding the need to tell her that he loved the kind of deodorant that she was wearing. "Well, truthfully, my love lies in music, but if a different kind of love comes along my way then I can share my heart with that, too," he explained with a joyous visage.

"You should try it some time, it’s liberating." Jackie felt like she had to take care of this boy now. He was blind and nice enough. And she needed something to take her mind off of her own life. She put a hand on his shoulder, touching his soft dark shirt lightly. Even though she felt sorry for him she would never say it out loud.

"What types of music are you most fond of? I just found this great young artist Nieve Nielson? She's so talented, but is based in Alaska so I've never seen her play. Gods. She's got a voice like an angel and the majority of her songs she played the ukulele with. It makes me wish I had more of a talent for Music. I can only play the guitar, and even then it's limited." The girl tilted her head.

He didn't seem mentally impaired in fact he was rather sharp, his only problem seemed to be his blindness. She felt that she could handle that. And if she was lucky he might have a phone she could barrow. All of her communication items had been taken from her bags when she was packing. Her family didn’t want to talk to Erika. And she hadn't been able to explain to the girl what was going on, she felt horrible about it. Even though it wasn’t her fault she still felt like it was.

Devon chuckled at her statement and felt her warm palm on his shoulder beneath his shirt. It was a comforting touch that he rarely got; everyone typically veered away from that thought.

At the sound of a familiar artist, he smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I've heard of her music. It's quite enjoyable. If you like her, though, you'll probably like Lykke Li. She has such soothing vocals and she's incredibly nice in person," he suggested as he lied back on the bed with his hands behind his head. "And if you need to learn, I can teach you how to play guitar. I'm pretty good even if I can't see the strings," he chuckled as he slowly blinked.

Jackie nodded then remembered that he couldn't see her. "That would be really generous of you." She said as she schooched up onto the bed and crossed her legs as she sat beside his head, her hand trailed down to brush gently though his hair. She sighed and smiled down at his face. He was so innocent it was breaking her heart, in her mind he was a child, and his vacant gaze made her so sad. But at least when she was feeling sadness for him she was not feeling sadness for herself.

"Lykke Li? I've never heard of her. Where's you find her?" She wondered how he found out about new bands especially new young artists. It's not like he could attend any of the smoky underground indie rock clubs that she did, he was to fragile for that scene, they probably wouldn't let him in the front door for fear he's get trampled. The boy was rather frail looking.

"Do you go to many concerts?" She asked curiosity in her low voice. Her smooth finger nails traced the invisible lines on the edges of Devon's face. She was infatuated by his way of life, and couldn't help but wonder. She had a whole year to live next door to him, it's not like they couldn't start their friendship now.

Devon pressed his head against her palm, enjoying the feeling of touch, and closed his eyes happily. "My father is Steve Aoki, the founder of Dim Mak records so he gets all of the insides on brand new artists and brings them up to popularity. I love him, but it's just, he's so involved in his music that he has little time to care for my needs. I understand it, I would be the same way: all enveloped in the sound of Dim Mak's music to care about anything else, it's just, sometimes I wish that they could realize that I don't need as much help as I need. Mr. Reykes was doing a grand job at keeping me well," he explained as he replayed past's events where his loyal chauffeur was there to help him out.

"I'm sure having a child with your...-unique qualities must have been a little scary for your parents, I know if I had a child who had your same life style I would be very worried about it." She tried to comfort him. "They must care about you very much." Jackie had no idea what his parents thought she just wanted to keep this kid happy.

"Dim Mak, huh? That's wonderful. It’s gotta be very exiting for your family." She said and used her free hand to fix his shirt and hair. She smoothed wrinkled and placed out of whack strands back into line. She didn't want to offend him but couldn’t resist helping. It was in her nature.

Jackie yawned her body still tired. She lay down beside him her eyes looking up at the ceiling. She closed them trying to imagine what it must be like. "You got any siblings?" She asked wondering about his life. It would be earlier if he had siblings.

All of the grooming that she was giving him was causing an other chuckle to pass through his lips. I've never gotten this much attention before, excluding the nurses at the hospital, he mused with cheer as he rolled his head towards her, his eyes staying shut.

"And I know my father loves me. I haven't heard from my mother in years," he stated as his eyes opened again. "She's probably off in Vegas somewhere. But anyways, I'm an only child. I would love to have a little sister or brother, though. I have all of this care built up inside of me and no one to release it on!" Devon exclaimed as he moved his arms apart, creating a wide gap between them that symbolized all of the care that he had.

"I'm sorry to hear that. If it helps any I don't see my Father much. He's always away campaigning or staying In Washington." She shrugged. And rolled on her side to face him. "I'm sure some day you'll find somebody. And they'll be able to everything and more that I can see in you." She grinned and ran her fingertips along his jaw line.

Jackie loved how life filled this kid was, he had hope something she wished she had. When he was sent into this exile he had kept hope close and she had cast it off like an old coat. She had broken down and he probably just saw this as another beginning. She closed her eyes and breathed quietly for a few moment before saying something.

"Devon?" She asked "Do you happen to have a phone I could barrow It's very important to me. She put her hand flat against his chest. Right above his heart and looked into his now closed eyes. She needed to take of this before it was too late.

Devon wondered for a moment what her parents did for a lifetime career, but sent the thought away when a desperate question was asked. He could hear the seriousness laced through her tone and immediately nodded, thinking back to his cell phone in his bags.

"Yeah, let me get it for you," he replied as he sat up and stood from the bed. He felt around on the floor with his bare feet, and when his toes touched a large duffel bag in the center of the floor, he bent down on his knees and opened the bag, reaching into the first pocket and sliding out a simple, large keyed cell phone. Feeling the on button on the back, he pressed the key and listened to the happy, electronic chirp it gave in response.

"Here you go," he exclaimed as he stood and held the phone out in front of him. "It should be pretty simple to use..."

"Thanks man, you’re a lifesaver." She stood and took the phone then kissed his cheek and stepped into the bathroom closing the door behind her. She dialed quickly remembering the phone number like her own birthdates. 1-362-434-6569. it rang four times before she picked up.

"Hello?" Erika's voice was clear and loud though the small speaker in the cellular phone. Compared to Jackie's it was high and more airy. Much more feminine and pretty.

"Hey Love It's Jack." Jackie was so excited to hear her love it was like a dream come true. "I'm so sorry I didn't get to say good bye. I know I'm a horrible person for---"

"Stop. Jackie. Your father said.... I can't see you anymore, and we can’t talk. Ever. Have a nice life." The phone went dead and the buzzing hum of a blank line echoed around the tiled bathroom. Jackie sank down to her knees and sat against the wall reluctantly she ended the call and tried desperately to keep from crying. She covered her face with her hands and breathed long shaky breaths as quite as she could. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably, she wiped them on her bare arms leaving streak marks of dark brown makeup.

Carefully she got up and turned on the shower so that there wound be enough noise to cover the sound of her crying. She sobbed into her hands and leaned against the outside of the cold tub, letting her emotions flow. It was too much. She needed to get away, she needed a safe place. There was no such thing anymore.

Her father had probably threatened Erika's family. He had probably told her father that He'd put him out of business. Or something worse, he was a terrible horrid old man.

Jack tugged her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them it was comforting and her jeans were so worn in so that they were soft and pliable against her face.

Devon's eyebrows furrowed at the hint of sadness that was in her voice before she left to the conjoined bathroom, causing worry to mask his features. I wonder what's wrong with Jackie? I hope it's nothing serious, he mused as he heard muffled talking from the other side of the door. His ears were able to pick up anything really, and when he heard a choked back sob come from in the bathroom, his visage saddened.

The shower turned on, masking the sounds of depression coming from within Jackie's temporary sanctuary. Devon shuffled over to the noises and knocked on the door with a shaking fist, scared of getting yelled at for interrupting her.

"J-jackie? A-are you okay? Can I come in?" he questioned as he put his ear against the door.

Jackie locked up when Devon knocked on the door, she grabbed a towel from the rack and wiped off her face trying to get under control. "C-Co-Come in..." She called and turned off the water. She tried to regulate her breathing unsuccessfully. "Sorry... " She stood up and her body was still trembling with held back sobs and cut off emotion. She was devastated and there was absolutely nothing she could do.

"S-She said...it's ov-er" Jack wiped her still wet eyes on the washcloth and bit her lip to keep from sobbing she didn't want to scare the kid. He didn't need to get involved he had plenty of problems on his own without any of her idiotic issues.

Cautiously she scooted around him and to the sink. She ran the washcloth in her hands under warm water and wiped her face off with it. "I. She...I can't do this." Jackie said and wiped her face with the cloth again rubbing her eyes hard.
