In the beginning, there was nothing, then, from that nothing, was born a single being of power which named itself Destruction. Destruction grew and became obsessed with itself. From the corruption that grew within it's being, a small fragment of it's orignal self split off, separating and becoming something else; Creation.
These two grew, feeding upon the threads of Free Magic which flowed through the void of the universe and becoming more and more powerful as time passed on... though time mattered not, since there was nothing to measure it by other than their own patience within the void of nothing but themselves.
Creation knew what had become of Destruction, how the solitude had corrupted her and caused her to go mad with the unlimited power of the universe which had been uncontested. Because of this, and because of a wish not to share the same fate as her sister, Creation used the power she had gained to fill the void of eternity... She created the sky and the sun to light it.
Though Destruction would not leave this unanswered... to each of these Destruction created a foil, she created the earth and the moon that pushed the sun from the sky to rule the heavens.
Creation, then, took a piece of the sun and cast it down onto the earth, which burst into flames to consume all that grew in the soil, and Darkness countered by opening the earth and creating a sea to quench the fire.
The two forces fought against each other for ages, seeing life spring to populate the world that they had created again and again before it was snuffed out by the arrogance of one over the other. Eons passed as Creation and Destruction struggled to best one another with their toys, though neither could win in the end, one would negate what the other had done, and the other would do the same.
The struggle carried on until there was nothing left of either, all the power that they had gained had been used up, and their essences were scattered across the void, each having rended the other to pieces of what they had been. Though in these pieces there was still potential...
The millions of pieces which had been torn from the bodies of Creation and Destruction still had life in them, and power, at that... They became aware, they became independant, and they began to drink from the flow of Free Magic just as their predecessors had before them. Spirits of
Light,
Fire, and
Air sprung from the body of Creation, and
Darkness,
Earth, and
Water were born from Destruction.
The void of eternity which had once been filled only by the twins of Creation and Destruction was now populated by countless spirits of the elements, pieces of what had once been, and all that remained of the two was this world that they had created in their war; Gaia.
Time had meaning now that there was a mortal world where it could be measured. The creatures which lived upon it went about their business oblivious to why they were there and what had brought them to be. They did not notice the signs that appeared whenever the spirits fought amongst themselves; wildfires, thunderstorms, eclipses... Creation and Destruction may no longer have existed, but their war was still fought through the spirits which had risen from their ashes, even if the spirits knew not why they fought.
As the conflict between the spirits raged on, the races of Gaia slowly began to take notice, siding with the certain spirits against others and joining the war from which they had originally been born. The spirits bestowed use of their magic upon certain mortals whom they favored, and the world of Gaia erupted into an elemental war which raged for centuries.
The most powerful of the spirits, the ones who had taken as much as they could fill themselves with of the Free Magic of the void, ruled over the others like kings, and these spirits became known as gods. There were once six of them, one from each element, who stole the power from their brethren in order to strengthen themselves. The mortals of Gaia worshipped them, and the spirits in the void feared them.
Those gods are gone now, having suffered the same fate as Creation and Destruction before them, and new spirits have risen from their ashes to take their places. To the people of Gaia they are all but forgotten, remembered only in age old tales and legends; so much time has passed since the war began that next to none even know why it is being fought.
