I get the impression that they were banking on at least a fourth season. With the second Transformers film dropping in a couple of weeks they probably expected CN to renew them for a fourth season.
I get the impression the cancellation forced them to resolve things as quickly as they could.
On rewatching I just noticed that the all spark now looks like the G1 Matrix of Leadership. (Unless that's something else around Optimus' neck during the disembarking scene.

you're more right than you think.
They were banking on a fourth season. That's why they left so many loose ends. But Hasbro dropped the unfortunate bomb on them, mid-production of season 3. So the last 3 episodes were sort of hurried.
I mostly blame CN. They didn't advertise it, they didn't push it, they stuck it on a freakin' early time-slot on Saturday Morning (what kid doesn't stay up late on Friday Night?).... Honestly, the only time I've seen CN advertise TFA was for the premiere of Transwarped.
*sigh* Another awesome show cancelled before it's time. Sadly, though, since CN still holds the broadcasting rights, I don't think it's possible that we would see TFA continued on the new Hasbro channel.
Though the comics have a little promise.
