Timaeus had to think long and hard about that question. Caranthir and Aerin ... well ...

"They've been here about four years now," he said slowly, "but sometimes I think I know as little about them now as I did when they first arrived. Aerin's like Aragost ... mysterious and creepy. Caranthir ..."

He paused. "It's as if he plays the role of a fop. Rude of me to say, but it's true. He acts like an idiot ... as if it's a cover for someone more serious, almost deathly serious ... I don't know. They generally keep to themselves. I mean, Caranthir's always willing to talk, but it's obvious that his main worry is Aerin ... but she ..."

He shook his head slowly. "No one knows anything more about her now than the day she arrived. She keeps to herself, speaks to none but Caranthir ... but she does her job, and she's a strong fighter, so ... no one can complain."

Still, she was scary.

Aragost nodded. Yes ... Lin would be happy to know that the threat was gone, and that her friends were all right. Of course, who wouldn't be? But she especially had reason to be relieved.

"You will be taking her with on this trip?" he asked softly, more because the man wasn't saying anything than anything else.

Personally Lin had always thought Aragost was mysterious, creepy and conrfusing but she had grown up when he was still a mystery to her, and she had spent a wonderful childhood trying to figure him out.

If she had been still a child, she would be trying to figure them out like to tomorrow, well she still would but at least Lin would like to think she would be more subtle about it.

"Wow... reminds me of when Aragost first arrived," Lin murmured, "Not that he's any less of a mystery but... well he had everyone... adults anyways on edge in his first few years."

The fact Halmir became serious while Aragost was gone told her a lot about how much Aragost's presence had been just accepted. Not that these fighters hadn't, but it's not every day you had fighters with a few mysteries as baggage.

Donovan blinked, realizing he had forgotten how much Aragost just seemed to know, even though he was a lot better with it than when he had first met Aragost.

"Yes," Donovan replied, "Which... actually means Miyu will be here by herself because Kara couldn't come...."

"Well.. I won't be all alone..." Miyu spoke up.

Which was true, true she wouldn't have anyone at Haven from home, but Cindy lived in the valley and well... there was Yami-san.. and she liked being with Haradhel.

Actually she didn't really know anyone else.

Timaeus thought about that for a moment. "Well ... it's not like she's ... that scary," he amended, "but she's almost that mysterious. Except that she's willing to talk to people ..."

Though most people ended up backing off under her fierce gaze, there was just something about her ... the fire in her eyes, perhaps ...

Aragost nodded gently at Donovan. "She will be safe," he assured him quietly, "do not worry. This is still the safest place in the Four Lands ... and you have my word that no harm will come to her."

More than just while Donovan was gone on this trip, but also later, when Miiyu would stay behind to work with the children.

"Hmm... it makes me curious," Lin admitted.

It had been a long while since any mystery came to her like that. Well there was the creature mystery, but that was sort of in a... I should be really worried about this sort of way. This was more of a curious sort of way.

"Thank you," Donovan murmured, "I'll see you later."

Hopefully after the trip before he goes back.

Timaeus nodded. "We all are. But Caranthir's the only one who knows anything. All I know is, she spends her days on duty, and her nights ... who knows where. She leaves at sunset, returns at sunrise ..."

He shrugged. "On trips she always takes the night watch, though she's as alert as any of us during the days."

The woman never slept, that much was certain. He only wondered how long it had been since she had slept.

Aragost nodded. "Perhaps I should tell you," he added as Donovan turned to leave, "I will be joining you for dinner tonight."

He didn't prepare any of his own food anymore - not because he couldn't, but because he didn't like the solitude. Millenia had passed of him being alone, and now that he was physically blind, he could not stand being alone. The darkness so often sought to overtake him ...

She knew elves didn't need to sleep (or rather they could make up all that sleep at once). Lin looked thoughtful....

"Is it possible to not sleep for so long?" Lin asked because still four years of knowing Aerin seemed an excessive amount of time not to sleep.

Well that was a surprise, but that was also good too Donovan thought absently. He nodded at this.

"I'll see you at dinner then," he told Aragost before leaving to find Lin.

Of course Donovan didn't know Timaeus had moved, even if it was just across the hallway.

Timaeus chuckled softly. "Easily," he assured her, "though I would never do it. It's ... kind of hard to explain, it's called the Elven Sleep, and while your body and mind function just as well as usual, there's ... something that allows you to rest."

He shrugged. "I don't know how it works, and I don't like how it feels, so I prefer to get real sleep. Still, I don't know how long it's possible to survive on it ... eventually the body's just going to crash, right?"

"Well.... I would guess so..." Lin murmured, "I mean, the point of sleep is to rest the mind and body."

There was also a blurb about how it was a time for the body to repair itself but then again Lin wasn't so good with health sciences, she knew the basics about that was just about it.

Though the better question would be... why would anyone do that to themselves?
PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2009 5:00 pm

"And yet she survives," Timaeus nodded. "I don't know how. Maybe it's something to do with Caranthir ... they hardly ever go anywhere without each other, even though they make it quite clear there's no romantic interest."

Maybe it would be interesting to simply ask the two of them ... though Aerin tended to be a little unsettling, so if there was going to be any asking done, it would have to be asking Caranthir. He at least smiled ... nonstop, it seemed.

Lin blinked at that thought, well it could be a partnership then sort of like... actualy she couldn't think of any partnership that didn't end with a marriage, unless one included Lain and Tracy, but she was pretty sure Caranthir and Aerin did not torment each other.

"Curiouser and curiouer..."

Meanwhile Donovan was making his way down the steps and towards the other end of the hallway where he assumed Lin was going to be. Well at least he was half right as he knocked on the door he assumed she would be in.
PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2009 5:13 pm

Timaeus was about to make a suggestion to Lin when he saw Donovan through the open door, knocking on his parents' quarters door.

"They're on duty," he called out to Donovan, standing up and heading towards the door. "Is there something I can help you with instead?"

Donovan whirled around, thinking he should have realized that Timaeus would have his own place, but then again he would still have to have knocked on that door to find out where he was.

"Actually I was looking for Lin," he replied poking his head in, "You're coming with us tomorrow."
"Straight to the point as always," Lin couldn't help but smiled wryly at her father, "Anything else?"
"No, I'd say that would be able it."

Timaeus chuckled softly. "Well, sir, I for one am glad to hear it," he grinned. "I expect we'll be leaving at first light, as always?"

He always looked forward to these trips - not only because it was a chance to travel a bit, but because of the feeling it gave him to be able to help so many children who needed them.

"As always," Donovan agreed.

This was probably only going to be his second trip with Timaeus, but he adapted quickly enough to having all these people on the trip. Unless the numbers cut down since then... he wasn't sure what was going on these days.

"I'll remember," Lin promised her father.
"I would hope so since you've been seeing us leave since you could fit into my pocket."

And that was a very long time ago.
