Well, the Salmon of Doubt was a partyly done Dirk Gently, so that's the last. Or at least, the bit at the end which was intended to be the Salmon of Doubt was. The rest is a bunch of other works by Adams. They're... interesting. If you know Adams, and you read those little summaries on the back cover, you'll have to buy it. Everything ties into everything else- remember every minor detail, no matter how extraneous it might be.

Yeah, I saw it. It's... odd. And rather abrupt.

Mmm, intriguing. . . My planned reading list grows longer. ninja

Dun dun dun! Whereas I'm in desperate need to go back to Barnes and Noble. I'm rereading a lot of books again. I've already read most of my books at least 3 times. And those are the ones I like least. Other I've gone through 5 or more. sweatdrop

Eep, perhaps an Amazon account would be helpful! Though they have a partnership with Borders/Waldenbooks, not Barnes & Noble. (Personally, the large number of chains owned by the Borders parent company frightens me. sweatdrop )

You've already been through your local library, haven't you? blaugh

Heh. One problem with reading a lot is that it becomes more difficult to find good books you haven't read yet. (Or so I've found.)

But I have a list of books I would like to read, once I get the time. Problem is, most of the books left on the list are large and dense. Not exactly what I'm looking for when I'm exhausted or under time constraints.

I'm a bookworm and feeling the effects of withdrawal, so. . . Wouldn't it be spectacular to have a special reading room, where once the door was closed, time passed far more quickly inside, relative to the outside? One could spend hours reading in the room, then step out and find only a few minutes had gone by in the rest of the world!

Then again, I'd sorely abuse that and probably end up dying of old age before I was 30. Whoops, that plan needs some improvement. xd

Though such an idea could have a larger market than bookreaders. People needing more time for work or sleep, or even to solve crisis situations, would probably pay to own a room like that. Hmm, scientists could use it to accelerate how quickly they got results from experiments. Governments could use it to advance their technology programs.

Wow, if one stuck a nice disclaimer on it ("Will not be held legally responsible for any damages incurred from long term exposure"), it'd turn a tidy profit. ^^

Alas, a currently non-existant profit. sweatdrop

Hah, my local library... All the books I've heard of that I'd like to read that are in there, I've already read. The manga selection of my Highschool Library is larger than the one in the public library (2 shelves compared 2 entire shelf... thingies). I've read all the series in that that I'm interested in, up to the last book. The rest are shojou (the vast majourity of anime/gamers of my school are girls).

I once just picked out a slim fiction book from the adults (as opposed to the childrens. Not talking porn here) section of the library, and I was kind of freaked out. It was originally in French, and was about teen prostitutes and incest and half-crazy investigators. sweatdrop

Oh dear, the adult fiction section. . . frightening. I ignored almost that entire area when I went through my local library. whee Gosh, it may not be porn, but it's darn creepy! Ever mistakenly pick up one of those romance novels? *shudders* The modern idea of romance seems to be lust. Made me appreciate the plot of Romeo and Juliet. gonk

For a long stretch, the only books I read were from the nonfiction sections. (Science and language, history and random things! heart ) I've finally taken an interest in fiction again, and even fantasy, but nowadays I mostly go by recommendations (from people I trust to give them). Though it seems like there's only ever time for manga. xd

Ha, my fiction-addiction is fed by manga and anime, now! domokun Thus the initial attraction to this site. ninja

Oh, shoot. Using the domo-kun makes me miss Libram. He always made it talk. cry

*sigh* Alrighty, had enough of being in clothes-other-than-kimono. My avatar is switching back, dangnabit! Yeah, it's boring being the same, but it's still a very nice kimono. People donated to get me that and I love it! 3nodding

Eh, lust is oft mistaken for love in many cases, especially in these days. If you like realistic, Cold War-ish novels, try out Clive Cussler. smile

Ooh, hey, I recognize that name! Spy novels, yes?

Suspense, spy novels, and Cold War era stuff is always intriguing. . . (pun intended) ninja

Read any of. . . (*whacks forehead* I can't remember the more obscure authors, so I'll just ask about these. . .) Allistair McLean or Tom Clancy?
PostPosted: Sat Apr 08, 2006 6:58 am

sweatdrop Eheh. Clive Cussler's the only one I've read from that genre, mostly because I heard part of it from an audio book my patrol listened to on the way to a campout. I wanted to read the rest. And the parts that I slept through. xd

blaugh

Well, I most definitely recommend Allistair McLean's works. Older suspense/spy-thriller stuff, but he is a fantastic storyteller. All writers write (not counting those that have ghostwriters sweatdrop ), but some of them can tell stories, and I count him among the best of the latter group.

His books Force 10 From Navarone and Where Eagles Dare, among others, have even been made into fairly decent movies. Though I love reading all of them, my favs of his are Ice Station Zebra, and The Satan Bug (<- the only book/movie/whatever to truly scare me and have me on edge for a couple days. eek )

Tom Clancy's earlier works are fairly good. *shrug* He's made incredibly accurate surmises about the truth behind certain events, and apparently knows secrets involving the US military/CIA that he's not supposed to. . . xd Heh, he has a talent for piecing together details about current political/military events and coming up with a plausible underlying story for them.

Admirable. I just don't like his writing as well, especially his later stuff. If you've ever seen movies like Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October, those were loosely based off Clancy's books. If you can find the Reader's Digest condensed versions that leave out the *ahem* unnecesary parts, Clancy's books are more enjoyable, I think. . . xd

Definitely recommend reading something of McLean's, though. (As much as I recommend the Hitchiker's Guide to people!) 3nodding

Coolness. I'll take note, though I give fantasy priority over other genres ninja . Still need to get another shot at the library/B&N soon. confused

*agape*

We all NEED to visit the library/bookstore!

*zany idea developes* Hey, er, what if we agree to get ahold of a book by Saturday, then tell each other what we found? (And later mention if it was any good. whee ) *sweatdrops* Or is this idea non-motivating and silly?

I dunno if I can go this weekend, but it sounds like a good idea. Though we're shifting from a weird elements thing to a book-club. xd
