Because it accidentally got switched with the stick for a shorter midget.

There are two. However, there are no walking sticks. Now, remove the cane idea from your head, look at the post below, add ideas of Lummany's murderous midgets, and you have it. So, the midget walks into his circus trailer, and sees the shorter walking stick of a shorter midget. He mistakes it for his own walking stick, and seeing it is smaller than he expected, he assumes he's grown and is no longer a midget and no longer belongs in te circus. So, he commits suicide.

All right, I'll put you out of your misery. It was very close, though:
This midget is the world's smallest midget, and is famous for it. He uses this stick purely for measuring himself. A mischeivious midget, who wants to be the smallest, cuts a bit off this midget's stick. the World's smallest midget thinks he has grown, and commits suicide.
