Ryan would normally have shrugged, but right now he didn't feel like it. He couldn't play it off as his duty or anything this time. Instead, he simply stepped forward and embraced Envy, hugging her tightly and holding her close to him, his words a soft whisper into her ear: "It's not a problem, Envy, and it won't ever be one. There's no need to thank me...not when I love you."

As if to emphasize his point, Ryan kissed Envy softly, on the lips. It wasn't much, his lips didn't do much more than brush hers, but he held her tightly as he was doing it, letting his lips rest against hers for a moment, before letting go so he could look into her eyes again, smiling as he did so.

Though Ryan's lips had just brushed against hers, his lips had felt like fire against hers. It wasn't the kind of fire that had burned Envy's pants leg just a few minutes ago. No it wasn't the bad kind of fire, it was the good kind. The kind that is indescribable so I should just stop trying because I'm epically failing at trying to do so. And with his arms around her holding her tight, it had felt so right.

"I love you too." Envy said softly as Ryan's lips left hers. She smiled up at him and looked back into his eyes. "So...how was your day?" she asked with a small laugh.

Ryan laughed as well. He didn't know why, he just did. Everything was just so happy, and he hugged Envy a bit tighter. "We spent the whole day together, silly," he said, before laying another kiss on her cheek. "But...it was nice, really...nicer than I can ever remember any day being." Ryan thought for a second, then added: "Well, maybe VE Day was a little better...but other than that, even the first harvest wasn't this nice."

Envy wrinkled her nose in confusion. She had never heard of VE day before though it kind of reminded her of veterans for some reason though she doubted that that was what it actually was. She thought for a moment on what would be such a great day back when Ryan was still alive. "VE day? Did that have to do with a war or something?"

Ryan nodded, letting go of Envy for a moment and walking over to the table. There was a drawer in one side, which Ryan opened, and from it he withdrew a newspaper. It was The Globe and Mail, an extra edition from May 8, 1945. Ryan had been in Regina that day, celebrating, and all he really remembered was this newspaper:

GERMANY SURRENDERS - WAR IN EUROPE OVER

It was this that he showed Envy. "May 8th, 1945. Victory in Europe day." He smiled again. "I heard him announce it...Churchill, that is. I heard so many of his speeches, actually..." Ryan tried to remember. "We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender...'" Ryan shook his head, remembering those words coming over the air in a CBC re-broadcast of what the BBC was broadcasting. "I daresay that Hitler himself was a great speaker, and the Americans had Roosevelt. Roosevelt wasn't too bad either...'Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a day which shall live in infamy - the United States was attacked...'" Ryan trailed off again, looking at the page. "De Gaulle was good too, but all of his speeches were in French...but I still think that Churchill was the best of them. He's the man who I'd paraphrase from if I needed to motivate an army."

Ryan walked back over to Envy, still holding the newspaper, and sighed. "I bet that's all boring for you, though. I admired some of those men, and others too...Lester Pearson, Pierre Trudeau, and Jack Kennedy all stand out. I don't know if you know any of those names, though, so..."

Envy shook her head. "I don't think it's boring. If it hadn't been for those men there's no telling how screwed up the world would be right now. And your right, I don't know any of the names you just listed except for the last one, Jack Kennedy. I have a feeling he was related to John F. Kennedy...that guy was a snazzy speaker. It is not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country... That would be the guy I'd quote. That guy, Dane Cook and Jeff Dunham. The three most brilliant men ever." She laughed a bit and glanced at the newspaper that Ryan held. 'Im surprised he can even hold that thing...it's so old..'

Ryan laughed, setting the paper on the coffee table. "They were the same man. John F. Kennedy was given the nickname "Jack" by the people and the media. 'Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.' I have a head for quotes..."

Ryan shook his head, then simply embraced Envy again. "I wouldn't have expected you to be interested in ancient history, Envy...at least, ancient to you. Ancient to me would be classical times," he said, laughing.

Envy smiled and rolled her eyes. "I'm interested. I hear bits and pieces of history from some of the patients in the Healing Room. Like there's this one guy that comes in everynow and then who lived during World War II and he plays his little harmonica and he sings and he's a pretty snazzily smart dude." She laughed and put her arms around Ryan. "In fact he kind of looks like you, someone who is not ancient or old in any way." She got up on the tips of her toes and gave Ryan a little kiss on his cheek. "Daven is ancient, not you."

Ryan just laughed. "Compared to you...I'm ancient." He gave Envy a kiss on her other cheek, then paused. "Hm...something smells nice..." Nodding his head back toward the fire, he noted the popping sound coming from it. "The steak's probably ready...no sense in burning it, now is there?"

Envy had noticed the steak smell coming from the kitchen at the same time as Ryan and glanced over at the stove. "Enough things have burned in your house for tonight, so uh, no." She let go of Ryan and gave him a cheesy thumbs up.

((Gah, sucky post >< ))

Ryan laughed, taking one of the plates in the cupboard and bringing it over to the fire, then putting the steak on the plate, which he put on the larger dining table. He then took the potatoes off of the stove (the water was boiling) and drained the pot, then used a weird item that looked like a rack attached to a handle to mash up the potatoes without even peeling them first. "Hope you don't mind my leaving the skin in there, but we didn't usually spend time peeling potatoes. It saved knives to just leave the skins on", he said to Envy, putting the mashed potatoes into a large bowl which also went on the table. "Well, dinner's ready either way."

And with that, Ryan sat down, taking one of the two seperate pieces of steak and putting it on his plate, also taking some potatoes for himself. "This smells better than I remember it," he said, before giving in and beginning to eat almost with reckless abandon. "Tastes better, too..."
