Good points have been made.
To each their own and depends on the perspective.
-For some it can be nothing but a pretty 'collectible' item to displayed or liven up the home interior.
[and it can be played off quite well in the interior, says the person who graduated interior design]
-To some-expressing themselves whether the person is conscious of the fact that he/she is 'representing' themselves or a part of themselves through an inanimate object.
[one of my older friends,a grown woman made an excellent point after coming across the BJD hobby "But isn't that putting 'yourself' into a doll's form?" and when you think about it,ain't that the truth in most cases? For example when it comes to writing or drawing, humans tend to subconsciously put a bit of themselves into their creations,I do think it applies to this hobby as well. I won't deny in the slightest that I find it interesting regardless. You know how you can look at a person's playlist and get a semi idea of what they're like by their taste? I find it to be the same with BJD's and I find it very interesting.I don't say a thing but I do pay attention to what personalities people give their dolls and notice how much it matches the owners themselves. It's interesting.
-Of course,to some it's giving their Original Characters a physical form which would explain why personalities, backstories and such are given.
What this hobby personally mean to me?
The opportunities to be creative and craft.Of course at the end it's always photography.
At the end,they are objects.Obviously.
Which is also a reason why I don't fully comprehend the storm about recasts.I do not own any but when I think about it,it's not that big of a deal as the majority of the community makes it to be. People choose how they spend their money. If they cannot afford a legit model or the model hasn't been restocked for years and they get a recast- I won't judge them.As a friend who's not in the BJD community said: isn't that like pirating a game? A doll is a doll.
I try not to think of it too much,of the hobby itself,I simply enjoy it.
