RagingBluMunky well, ofcourse, but if you are thinking what I think you're thinking, which is probably what you're thinking, though I could be thinking wrong, I want something heavier than a long-barrelled burst cannon, with a bost to strength as opposed to range. (do LB bursties have upped strength?)
No. The definition/tradition of long barreled is that it gives the gun a 1.5x range. If anything, you could give it the stats of a multi-fire Plasma Rifle.

Heavy 5 is absurd for an infantry carried weapon.

No. Most they can have is 6 shots through two TL Devourers, and those are AT BEST S6 AP-. Just because it's a battlesuit doesn't mean that it's piloted by Christ and he's using his own holy essence to superpower the guns.

One aspect of Tau army is firepower ladden-characters - you can have one large blast (and ignoring cover) and one assault 5 weapon on single character and fire them both smile lesser weapons are nice too, with equivalents to autocannon and heavy bolter available to almost any crisis commander. In other armies psykers are sometimes very potent in shooting phase with flamer-type powers able to score multiple kills. In similar vein, daemon weapons of Tzeentch can be used in shooting as assault d6 s4 ap3 ( or ap2?) making them fine for marine-killing. New marine codex allows very powerful gun in ther hands of master of the forge aka chief techmarine - its power is variable ut up to s10 ap1. Orks Big Mek can be devastating (even to himself) with shokk attack gun. Last but not least Tyranid MCs can have a lethal ranged weaponry.

Actually a commonly used Chaos Daemon Prince loadout features Wind of chaos, which is a psychic power that acts pretty much like a flame. Its quite the powerhouse as I understand it. If you really want a gun though, the Daemon weapon of Tzeentch (which a lord of chaos with mark of tzeentch can use) is infact a gun. I forgot about it's range but its pretty damn insane in how much it shoots. Isn't played much though, as for the points you can get better hq units.

24" S4 AP3 Assault d6 It's also an upgrade equivalent in cost to 4 Plasma Guns.

A Hive Tyrant with 2 TL Devourers has 12 shots. A particularly nasty set of 12 shots as they re-roll both to-hit and to-wound rolls.

So my idea, isn't that farfetched, seeing as it isn't that many shots, comparativley, with total loadout being that gun, shield gen, and mebbe a flamer, or a drone, not both but not sure which

I'd say, if anything, give him a "special" drone with a Flamer. Also, given the number of shots on that gun, it would have to be fired without him moving. Even though Battlesuits are Relentless, that many shots from a non-Monstrous Creature should require them to stand still.

RagingBluMunky could, though mebbe a S6 AP4 heavy 5 gun might work arent tau plasmas ap3? Tau Plasma are the same AP as everyone else's plasma. Two. Now, if you really wanted to do something different, give your Commander a Broadside suit with this homebrew weapon. Thematically, it works better; there''s no codex weapon you can give to a Crisis Battlesuit that is a Heavy weapon, and it fits better with Broadsides being the really heavy firepower.

Might be old news, but IG settled some of this with their heavy-bolter wielding Sargeant Harker.
