{Go with your instincts, along with some bad advice.} Roundabout :: Part I
"Chesh!" Reid sharply turned around the corner, still pursuing his gleefully fleeing brother. Normally he wouldn't have cared if his brother was running around the house, as there really was no harm to it, but the little idiot had stolen his Alchemy Notebook and Reid knew by experience that if he didn't get it back the heavily noted pages would be turned into everything from paper birds to paper hearts by Cheshire's hands and he couldn't let that happen.
Putting on a sharp burst of speed the firefly crossed the distance between them and tackled Cheshire to the ground.
The resulting wrestling match lasted a few minutes but, finally, the firefly emerged triumphant, clutching the notebook to his chest.
"This isn't yours, Chesh," he stated firmly, pointing one finger at his pouting brother, "you have plenty of paper, go play with it. Or find Fai and get him to share his paper with you."
Fai... yes, that was a good idea! Fai would play with him!
Grinning Cheshire bounced up, smiled warmly at his brother in thanks for the game, and promptly toddled off without another word.
Reid rolled his eyes and gently thwacked his forehead with one palm. Leave it to his brother to take a lecture and only extract that from it.
Sighing he turned around, gently prying open his notebook, he carefully combed through the pages as he walked, making sure all the notes and diagrams were still there.
He passed by the main door way and headed for the stairs when the soft shift of paper flitting through a crack caused him to turn around.
A tiny, origami bird (a magpie if Reid's guess was anything to go by, though it probably wasn't) sat just a few feet away.
Frowning Reid tucked his thankfully intact notebook in one arm and trotted over to the bird, picking it up. Instantly it unfolded in his hand (not one of Cheshire's stubborn creations then...) and he blinked at the words carefully printed on it.
Greetings and salutations,
we are very pleased to alert you to a recent discovery which we believe will be very useful to you.-
A small, oval stone suddenly dropped out from between the papers, forcing Reid to stop reading as he grabbed it out of the air.
The obsidian stone glimmered in the light of the hallway.
-We were altered to your situation and the recession your body had been undergoing some time ago and very recently the enclosed stone came into our possession. Utilizing it and the following page you should be able to cease and reverse the recession.-
Reid stared at the last sentence for a moment, blinking to make sure it wasn't going to disappear before hastily skimming over the end of the letter.
-There may be some temporary side effects and we would warn you not to practice your element directly before or for the next week after you utilize the stone. Instructions are included written out on the next page.
We wish you the best of luck.
Signed,
The Magical Mishaps Staff.-
Reid reread the letter once more before carefully turning to the next page, terrified that any damage to the letter would suddenly change its contents and looked to the next page.
A page of sheet music greeted him and a small current of sound whispered in the back of his mind, interrupting the usual melody that was there, before disappearing so quickly that he barely noticed it'd come at all.

{Make your decision and don't you dare think twice.} Roundabout :: Part III
It started as a twinge of warmth somewhere in the middle of the piece and happened so suddenly that Reid nearly paused.
Shaking his head and somewhere managing not to miss a beat the firefly played on until the end and the twinge wasn't repeated, his free hand worrying at the stone which he'd clasped to his t-shirt clad chest.
The piece came to an end and Reid's fingers rested gently on the top of the keys. He looked around.
Nothing seemed to have changed. The book shelf, his bed, the ceiling fan- all of them still looked huge and precisely the same as they had before he'd started to play. Nothing had happened, he hadn't grown at all.
Nibbling on his lip the firefly sighed and made to look at the stone, but when he tried to raise it to eye level he found that it refused to budge from where he'd been holding it against his chest (beneath his fur collar and just below the dip in his collarbone, just like the note had said to do) and because of the angle of it he could barely see it without the use of a mirror.
Frowning he poked and prodded, feeling around the edges and tugging at his t-shirt, eying the oval shaped hole that looked as if it had been burned it in.
"Huh..." he murmured and dropped the shirt, assessing the situation. There was a hole that seemed to have been burned in his shirt and stone seemed to be attached to his skin (or was somehow otherwise resisting the forces of gravity). The note from the staff hadn't mentioned anything like this happening.
...
But it also hadn't said that it wouldn't happen.
Double negative equals positive?
Maybe he'd go see Jabir or Maggie anyway.
Sliding off his piano bench the firefly made to head towards the door, knowing that, if he was going to head as far away as Jabir's office he'd need to get Nima.
But Nima was already there, lying in an ermine heap on the floor.
"Nima?" She wasn't moving. "Nima!" he tried to rush over to her but only made it two steps before staggering as a wave of pain hit him.
Knees hitting the carpet he braced his hands against it, panting and gasping. Letting out a low groan that seemed to be swallowed up by the very air in the room he wavered and collapsed on his side, curling his legs up to his chest and whimpering.
His eyes darted to the music but the paper was already turning to dust.
Had he done something wrong? He must have. He tried to recall the exact words of the note but they were crushed beneath the metaphorical heel of the pain. He tried to scream but the sound never hit the air.
It felt like an invisible hand was crushing him, kneading down his spine with its knuckles and attempting to pull his appendages from their sockets.
'Please...' Reid mouthed silently, squinting at the ceiling which seemed to have suddenly blurred, 'please... whoever you are...stop.'
The pain spiked and he shut his eyes-
-and suddenly he was standing in an immense, white and blue tiled hallway; pristine pillars held up a high ceiling and a large, oak door, carved with markings and words he didn't understand was shut behind him.
'Where am I?'
He blinked and was suddenly aware that he wasn't wholly there. It was almost like looking at a landscape, with the hallway as the foreground and his room out in the background. He couldn't wholly focus on both of them at once and his eyes and senses wanted to simply stay where he was. But curiosity demanded that he try and get his room back into focus. If he just squinted...
The pain hit him like a tangible force and he stumbled backwards a step, beating his wings to keep from falling onto his butt.
"Mmm... such like a moth, aren't you, little firefly? Always drawn to the light. I suggest you stop before you get too close and end up... how do you say it? 'Zapped?'"
Reid looked up, eyebrows furrowing. Where the hall had stretched forward there was now a white wall and a throne situated in front of it. A woman was casually lounging in it, her long dark hair curled around her shoulders and the straps of her white dress.
He took a step back, "who're you?"
Supporting her chin with one hand she smiled as she regarded him carefully.
"Why, I'm your benefactor, of course."

--May 28th, 2006-- X-posted in Aido's journal {If we can gain happiness, then our suffering doesn't really matter....} Roundabout:: Part VI
It was almost dawn by the time Aido woke up.
Muffling a yawn with her hand she looked around, quietly taking in her mother's sleeping form and the empty bed.
"Rael, is Reid nearby?" she murmured, standing up carefully and rubbing at her left wrist with her hand. The appendage ached dully in response.
Silently she padded over to where they'd left Nima the night before. Grabbing a discarded hoodie that must've belonged to her mother she pulled it over her head, fingers brushing against her halo.
A silent affirmative to her question suddenly drifted across the link and her shoulders slumped in relief.
Gently she picked up the unconscious ermine, biting her lip in worry when a patch of white fur was left behind on the counter, and depoisted Nima into the front pocket of her shirt.
Casting a last look at her mother she slipped out of the room and into the hall.
Reid and Ike had parted ways only a few minuted before and the firefly had been on his way back to his room when he ran into his sister.
Despite being significantly taller than before the look Aido pinned him with still managed to make him feel like an igsignificant bug. Aido's glares were few and far between, which only made them more potent when they came out.
Silently they walked back to the balcony and sat down, Aido gently removed Nima from her pocket and Reid started when he saw his companion.
"Nima... I-I forgot all about her..." he murmured in dismay, gently taking the ermine in his hands. Immediately Nima's breathing became easier and he placed her gently in her lap, stroking her carefully with two fingers. Reid looked back to his older sister but Aido's gaze was trained on the sky.
"Aiai?"
Aido sighed and rubbed at her wrist, "are you alright, Reid?"
"Yeah! Of course! I'm better than alright!" Reid grinned, glowing warmly as he pressed his toes against the ground. His earlier happiness at being taller returning.
Aido smiled slightly and lent back in her chair, "I'm glad... that was really scary."
Reid's smile faltered and he nodded, looking down at his lap, "yeah... it was, wasn't it? I've never felt like that before...." The firefly blinked, head snapping up, "is Aemu okay?!"
"She's fine, worried, asleep right now, but fine...."
"Shouldn't we head back now? Before she wakes up?"
"Just... I want to talk about what happened before we go back," Aido looked to her younger brother. "Did that woman get in your head too?"
Reid blinked. He'd almost convinced himself that that part had been a bizarre dream. "Elena?"
Aido nodded.
Reid grimaced and scratched at his cheek, "yeah... argh, I thought she was just a dream."
"Part of her was in that stone," Aido replied, as if it was the most normal occurance in the world, "or... part of her shadow, at the very least," she itched at her wrist, grimacing as she recalled what it'd felt like to have that woman inside her.
Reid's eyebrows knit together and he pressed a finger to the stone, "but why?"
Aido shut her eyes, shook her head and shrugged.
Reid bit his lip then shurgged as well, "but you got rid of her, didn't you, Aiai? You were the one she said was 'meddling' weren't you?"
"Meddling?" Aido blinked and chuckled, "yeah... I suppose I was meddling. I pulled her out, if that's what you mean. Rael tore that part of her apart...."
Reid grinned. His big sister took care of everything. "So everything's better now."
Aido blinked her eyes open and tilted her head, "you have a stone that had part of a woman's consciousness in it stuck to your chest, Nima's hurt, a woman managed to get into both of our heads..." the current conditions were listed without malice and he knew his sister wasn't trying to make him feel like a fool but Reid grimaced all the same.
"Yeah... you're right, things aren't okay, are they?"
"I don't know... but something happened. Something different and perhaps bad," that shadow hadn't felt good, that was for certain.
Reid sighed and the two siblings quietly watched as the sky got lighter, little by little.
"We should head back before Aemu wakes up," Aido stood, the reached out a hand.
After carefully cupping Nima to his chest Reid took her hand, allowing her to help him up. The two of them headed back towards his room.
Aido abruptly ruffled her brother's hair, "Reid?"
Reid, who'd taken the antennae abuse without complaint, looked up, "what is it, Aiai?"
"I'm really happy for you, even if things happened in a sort of weird way..." Aido said with a small smile as she took in her brother's form, walking straight backed next to her, displaying his new height. Nothing ever happened in a 'normal' way with their family anyway, maybe it was fitting that Reid had to get to a proper height via a witch and a stone....
Or maybe she was just rationalizing things.
"Though you do know that Aemu will be dragging you into helping her work on the shop now, don't you?"
Reid smiled and shrugged, "oh well, I don't mind... I'm just happy I can help more now." He bat his wings and raced the last few feet to open the door.
Aido laughed and followed him into the room.
