Hinata paced along the roofs of the 13th Division quarters, heading for her Captain's office. Quickly checking there was no-one walking below, she jumped off the roof and was relieved to find herself standing opposite her destination. As usual, her sense of direction had deserted her, and she had spent a good part of the morning trying to remember her way around the place.
'Darn these white walls. They all look the same,' she cursed silently, brushing her uniform free of any dirt before proceeding.
"Well, I TOLD you to ask someone for directions, you only had to shelve your damn pride for TWO seconds while someone pointed you on," Harikaze scolded in Hinata's head. Hinata chose to ignore the remark, mentally sealing Harikaze into a wooden chest and wrapping iron chains around it. The lock clicked and she threw away the key.
Hinata wondered how she would be recieved by her Captain. She had abandoned Sereitei in search for her sister, and had only just, so to speak, "come back from the dead". She could scarcely believe that just because she had been gone for ages, they would presume she forgot her commitment to Soul Society, and went and got herself killed. She even wondered if anyone apart from her family and her sensei remembered her any more.
'Surely someone should remember me... Was I really that easy to forget?' she pondered.
"Tell me, what groundbreaking feat did you achieve in Sereitei that everyone should have you imprinted in their minds?" Harikaze goaded.
"I didn't mean everyone, I was questioning whether my friendship with all the others in the academy was really that fragile," Hinata snapped back. She reached the door, and without waiting for a reply from her zanpaktou, knocked.
"Hello? Is Mockadash-taicho there? Kazuki Hinata, reporting for duty-" she was interrupted by the realisation that she couldn't sense any reiatsu from inside the office.
"Huh? Taicho isn't in there? Aww... What a waste of time... And I actually eventually found this place..." she sighed, flopping down on the grass outside, deciding to wait until her missing Captain returned.
"Idiot. If you'd been paying attention, then you would have noticed ages ago. Now, if you've finished sulking, please find a more useful activity to take up our time instead of just sitting here," Harikaze's scornful voice rang out. Again, Hinata ignored the jibe. She was so used to Harikaze’s constant disapproving manner and spiteful comments, that she hardly felt them any more. Opting for the shut-Harikaze-out-of-your-mind-and-do-whatever-you-want method, she closed her mind to her zanpaktou, and hopped onto the roof of the building, seating herself comfortably and awaiting Mockadash’s return.

A hand gently rested on Hinata's right shoulder. A deep voice came from behind the Shinigami that was sitting on the building's rooftop. You must be Hinata-kun. Am I correct? MockaDash said. The Captain had shumpoed behind his subordinate, without her noticing. Due to Mock's highly trained reiatsu perception, he had felt her presence from far away, most certainly from a distance that she would not be capable of feeling his. Mock enjoyed surprising people.
I know who you are. I've studied your profile and some reports about you. he bluntly said. I was wondering when you would make an appearance. Other than his usual haori, worn over his Captain's robes, and his kasa, Mock was smoking a kiseru, leisurely exhaling smoke as he spoke. From behind his hat, blue scarf, and wide sunglasses, it was almost impossible to perceive his facial expressions, let alone unveil his current mood.
In what can I be of service to you, Hinata-kun? Shall we go inside? He inquired her.

Hinata jerked and almost tumbled off the roof at her Captain's surprise appearance. She caught herself at the last moment, ending up in an awkward half-sprawling position. She was rather taken aback at MockaDash's antics, and wondered if he did this to all of his subordinates.
No.1 rule in being a Shinigami, be alert at all times... Harikaze recited dully, and you're supposed to bow. Hinata fumed inwardly and contemplated forcibly snapping her zanpaktou in two, before deciding that it wasn't worth the bother of waiting for Harikaze to recover. Anyhow, she didn't want to start her career in the 13th Division by making a bad impression of herself in front of her Captain. Her reputation as a deserter was bad enough already.
The Shinigami quickly returned to her conversation with MockaDash, who was currently asking her if they should go inside.
"Uh, OK, why not?" she piped up, sliding from her seat on the roof and waiting for her Captain to unlock his office. The door slid open, and she stepped in after MockaDash.

Watching her subordinate's weird posture, something of the "old" Mock came back at the Captain as he warmly smiled.
Seeing that Hinata didn't quite perceived the sarcasm in the sentence "In what can I be of service to you", all that remained was for MockaDash to lead the Shinigami to his office.
The air was still stale inside that room, since all windows were left closed. Opening a couple of them, Mock let the fresh air invade the interior of that office.
Pointing at a chair, Mock let Hinata know that she should sit there. While sitting behind his own desk, the Captain took his time to puff some smoke from his pipe, before asking So tell me... Why are you here, and what do you wish to accomplish? Also, I ask that you put in your own words, what is it we do here in the 13th squad?

(( Hmm. I actually have no idea what the office looks like right now. :S Is there a description anywhere? Or has it not changed much since the previous captain left? ))
Gazing around at the room, Hinata's eyes rested on the plain walls, polished desk and stack of paperwork done in neat calligraphy in one corner. It was rather more spacious than she had remembered, which wasn't surprising, since the first office she'd been assigned to was almost claustrophobic in size, and she doubted she'd ever been in a captain's office before. Indeed, she vividly recalled her first day out of the academy, where the new recruit had scarcely set foot in her previous Captain's office to introduce herself, before the lieutenant had literally dragged her off by the collar for sparring, to see if she could take any of the seats.
The shinigami sat down gingerly on the chair in front of her as indicated, as if it would come alive and bite her. When MockaDash asked the next two questions, her initial reaction was mild surprise at his choice of words. She frowned.
'Why am I here?' she pondered, having not thought about the question properly before.
"I suppose..." she began slowly, chewing the words over, "that I am here because I wanted to be a regular shinigami again. To participate in training excersises, to go on missions, to gain experience and climb through the ranks." It was not a lie, but she did not mention anything about failing to find her sister, for just thinking about the older Kazuki made Hinata want to crawl into a small hole and remain there for eternity. "I guess, I missed the regularity of life in Sereitei. Being a rogue shinigami is unpredictable. There's no knowing if anyone will try to assassinate you while you sleep (as there are plenty of shinigami haters out there), no knowing what dangers are lurking around the next corner. Sure, you gain a lot of experience from it, but you have to be on constant alert, and I was just... tired. A few years would have been fine, but seven..." She paused, not knowing how to elaborate the subject, and changed subject. "And what do we do in the 13th squad? We strive to gain honour through good deeds, and protect it, along with all of this- all of Sereitei." Hinata gazed out of the window at the lush grass waving merrily around in the breeze outside. A small smile appeared on her youthful face. "Because we are the Divine Protectors. And after all, isn't this worth protecting?" She gestured out of the window over-enthusiastically, her mood changed abruptly from the gloomy frame of mind a few minutes ago, forgetting that she was waving her arms around like a mentally challenged ten year old in front of her Captain.
‘Wow, what a pretty scene!’ she thought, blissfully happy until Harikaze chose that exact moment to impede on her thoughts.
“Moron…” she commented. For once, as she looked upon the slightly sceptical face of her Captain, Hinata didn’t disagree.
(( I won't be on from Friday-Monday, as I am going to Belgium, to gawk at random people's graves (school trip to the battlefields), and attempt to purchase stuff in the shops in French ¬.¬ Just so you know that I haven't deserted the RP that quickly biggrin ))

((There's a description about the office on the first post of the thread. My first post in here - probably a couple of pages back - tells about the changes in this place, which are almost none. Remember that currently Seretei is being controlled by Arrancars. This RP is developing in a separate timeline, happening before that invasion! I'm planning of creating a new Office thread after Seretei is taken back by us!))
Let me make it perfectly clear... There is no place for "regular" Shinigamis in my squad! the Captain frowned. Though... I do agree that what you just described, is not a "regular" one... Regular training and improvement of one's skills is a basal paradigm to us, Gotei 13 Shinigamis. It's also a part of your duties, to always be on-call, for you can be summoned at any moment!
I assure you... There will be plenty of missions! Mock stood up as well, and left the kiseru from wich he was smoking, resting on top of the desk. Placing himself behind Hinata, the Captain gazed at the outside world, bathing in the warm light that was filling that dark room. The Office was still a mess. There were documents and files all over the floor and desk, piled on top of each other. Mock hadn't changed anything on this office, since he was still mourning his former Captain's death, and had no will to take care of such trivialities.
The green field outside, the warmth, the bright and clear sky, the gentle breeze coming in through the window... Everything seemed peaceful and inviting... Though inside of him, an ominous feeling clenched itself around his heart and guts! Mock was weary, not only depressed by his past failure - he still blamed himself for the death of Daven. It's not like there was much he could do have he been by his side, other than dying with his Captain! But wasn't that the onus of Vice-Captaincy and wasn't the oath of a duelist to rely and be of reliance to his comrades in battle?
But what? What could possibly give him such a dark feeling, in such a beautiful day?
As to what defines us as Shinigamis, it's our duty here... Each squad has a duty... Ours, Hinata-kun, is to protect all of Seretei with our lives if need be! We are the first and last line of defense! We are responsible for making sure that everyone else can take care of his or hers responsibilities assured that this place is, and always will be, a safe haven. There's no "normal" Shinigamis here... But watchers and keeper of peace!
We are the epitome of guardianship!
The irony... MockaDash gulped, as the foreboding of an imminent failure was creeping close to him...

(( Uhh... I think I have coachphobia now. In 4 days we probably spent about 30 hours sitting on that coach. I thought we were going by train, but we ended up driving the coach into the train gonk Sorry for this very late reply smile I was doing catch-up work >.< O.O I hope we finish this before Sereitei is taken back. Though at this rate it looks like it's going to take another month >.< ))
"By regular, I mean a Shinigami that serves the Gotei 13. Individuality is an important quality, and I guess it's essential. You can't build an army with all the same men." Hinata frowned a little.
'Maybe my perception of "regular" got a little twisted while I was away...' she thought.
"Or maybe it's just because you're an idiot," Harikaze retorted.
Hinata tried hard to keep a straight face.
The young Shinigami twisted from her position as Mockadash stopped to stand behind her. She sensed an omnious aura coming from him, tinged with sadness and regret. She wondered what could have made her Captain become like this. It struck her then how naïve she must seem to him, that he, like every other long-serving Shinigami, must have witnessed such horrors in his past that were unexplainable, and must have suffered a great deal to earn his position. While she had been a rogue Shinigami, Hinata had had no-one to compare herself to, and consequently did not recall the huge spans in power and knowledge between each rank. She had almost forgotten what it was to be like to be inferior to another.
“The epitome of guardianship?” Hinata repeated, raising an eyebrow and smiling a little, still facing the plain of grass beyond the window. Her Captain’s explanation, which had sounded reasonable up until then, had suddenly turned into a glory speech.
“Well, Captain, I suppose if I am to contribute to our line of guardianship, I had better be going off to train some time around now. That is, if you have no other tasks you require me to perform. I might as well familiarize myself with the squad if I am to work with them from now onwards, and see what level I would aspire to achieve if I am to obtain a seat in the near future…” the Shinigami turned, waiting for approval from her Captain.

Mock was not dead. Although, he was nothing more than a shadow of himself, clinging to his duty only as a way to justify his existence, something of his past idealist and utopian self was still beneath that cold layer of skepticisms that he currently wore - about the universe in general, and the Gotei in particular.
You're free to go, Hina-chan. Mock said to the young girl, smiling at her.If you want though, I can give you a tour myself... I was going for a stroll anyway...
Yes, old Mock was still there, somewhere...

Hinata was about to turn for the door when Mockadash suggested he could give her a tour himself.
"Oh, of course!" she said brightly, knowing that it was a great privilege to have been offered this by her Captain. "Shall we go, then?" She slid the door open.
She knew that it would take time to become accustomed to life in the Gotei again. After today, she would take it upon herself to go back and visit the family mansion, something she had been trying to avoid. Of course, her old Sensei had tracked her down not soon after, but agreed not to make a huge fuss of it at home. She realised that part of the reason why she had been so reluctant to come back was that part of her feared everyone would reject her. Her Captain had soon changed her perceptions. Perhaps this wouldn't be so bad after all.

Not saying another word, Mock simply exited through the open door, as he warmly smiled at Hinata. He would show her around the several areas of the squad. Intending to finish their stroll in the endless forest, for a nice break, and probably something else...

-- Divine Protectors Memorial --
This is the place where once the 13th Captain's Office stood. Now it's reduced to wreckage, though the foundations of the once glorious building still remain.
Debris were removed and the place cleaned, but the standing remains of walls and entire rooms were left as they were, as a monument in tribute to the old Sereitei and the people that belonged to the Squad.
This place is only kept as a memorial now.
Outside the perimeter of the monument, at its entrance, there is a large marble slab, with nothing written on it yet.
