Jair watched Feng closely, his green eyes wide to take in everything he could.

"Oh," he murmured, his tone filled with awe as he watched her. "I see."

And he swam a little further down and started dusting the mud aside with his hands. A cloud of mud plumed up around them, alarming Jair and making him cough a bit. He backed up to get out of the mud-cloud, but his face and stomach and tail were already filthy.

Feng giggled as she drifted over to Jair so she could wipe the dirt off of him. It would be hard to explain to his mother after all how her son was so dirty even though he was in the water.

"Gently...." she told him, "Not to fast."

Meanwhile Ryu was helping Naida remove stones that had piled up to find maybe a shiny one.

Jair spit out a mouthful of mud and nodded at Feng, allowing her to clean him off.

"Why does it do that?" he asked curiously, looking up at her and wiping some mud from his eyes. "It didn't do that for you!"

"Because...." Feng murmured as she brushed him off, fortunately in water they do settle quickly, "You were going very fast and very hard, so it makes the mud go up faster and in water it floats for a bit before settling down. So you have to do this gently otherwise dirt is going to get everywhere..."

"Oh," Jair murmured, wiping his tongue with his fist to clean it of the last of the mud. "I see."

He looked back down at the cloud of mud. "Maybe we should look somewhere else for now?" he suggested softly. "It doesn't look like it's clearing up here at all ..."

Feng looked around and noticed even she was getting dirty. Ah well... it looks like she was going to need a clean shirt... even being in water all the time there was only so much water could do.

"We should... why not join Ryu and Naida? They're moving rocks to find the shiny ones."

Jair nodded and swam a little higher in the water so that he could see past all of the dirt and silt.

"I see them!" he announced, pointing up the river a bit. "Right there!" And without looking back at Feng, he started off towards the two.

Meanwhile Ryu was setting rocks aside, so was Naida but she had to pick them up with both hands in order to do so. It just took her longer to unearth the other rocks under the ones they were moving.

Naida looked up from what she was doing to see Jair coming towards them, she waved happily at him, "Uncle Ryu said we might find some rocks that were polished by the river on their way down."

Jair's eyes grew excited once more as he moved to join his cousin and uncle.

"Oohhhh polished by the river!" he breathed, rubbing his hands together.

Then he stopped and blinked at Naida. "What's that mean?"

Ryu looked up, it looked like Jair had less of a vocabulary than they did. He picked up a rock and showed Jair, "When I use something to clean a rock with, to rub it until it shines, that's polishing, so to polish is to rub or clean something until it shines. It gives it a finished look."

Naida pointed to her uncle, "What he said."

Jair listened closely to Ryu's explanation, nodding vigorously at the end of it.

"I get it, I get it," he nodded, grinning. "It's pretty ... I like that. Polished rocks."

He kind of glared at Naida, thinking, Showoff, in his mind. It wasn't his fault he didn't know, he wasn't even a day old yet after all!

But then he turned his attention to the bottom of the river, sifting carefully through the dirt to find the nicely polished rocks, and his temporary disgruntledness was already forgotten.

Naida blinked not understanding why Jair was giving her that look, but she wrote it off as in she was probably taking it the wrong way. After all this was Jair, though she didn't know him quite well yet, to her he couldn't be angry at nothing. She smiled cheerfully back at him going back to looking for some sort of stone.

She had seen shiny stones, but they were always set in jewelry so this was going to be something new for her. She picked one up, and decided it wasn't shiny enough and looked for another one.

Jair picked up a few stones but tossed all of them aside immediately as being too jagged, to dull, or just plain boring. He wanted to find something else that was special. Maybe not a coin, but something.

He saw the sun reflecting off of something white and shiny, and he darted forward to pick it up and see what it was. It was ...

... a shiny rock.

Big, not very pretty, just white. Nothing special.

"Hey Uncle Ryu," he called out, laying the rock back on the floor of the riverbed, "what kind of stuff did you find when you looked here when you were a surprise?"

"Hmm..." Ryu looked thoughtful at that, "A few white stones, a few black ones.... most of them I'm not sure what type of stone they were... though Feng and I did find quite a few pieces of quartz from time to time."

It had been a while since he gone stone hunting and it had always been more of Feng's thing than his.

"Quartz?" Jair repeated curiously, taking another look at the white stone he had found and trying to decide if maybe, just maybe, it was worth collecting after all - even if it was nearly the same size as him.
