Orika sighed and rolled her eyes. It would have made more sense had Shisei stopped at around 8 or 9 minutes, but to expect 10 minutes at only 6 was unrealistic. She stepped forwards and crushed a leaf that had landed on her hair in a clenched fist. Somewhere along the lines a one-winged fly had gotten stuck to a bit of sap on the leaf and now it was lying, legs flailing as it hung onto its last breath. Or did the fly gasp to release its life-giving breath, as it knew it was about to die, knew that every second it stayed in the world of mortals was another second of hell-fiery pain? The farm girl shuddered and tossed the leaf pieces to the ground, wiping the fly guts on her already filthy jacket. At first, it puzzled her as to why she was so bothered by a fly, of whose species she had murdered hundreds of times before. No, murder was a word that made it sound like there was some wrong in killing flies. But as Shisei started speaking again, Orika realized that for a brief moment, she had lost sense of her self. Because of one ignorant boy's cruel words, she had ducked into her shell, afraid to interact with anybody because they were all superior to her nothingness. And when she had failed to make any impact on Karite's fight, failed to even garner his attention. Then, there was Xyn, who brushed her off his shoulder... like an annoying fly. And Maya was no use, for she was the last person to go to if one wanted to be recognized.

A puff of wind blew into Shisei's face, the source from a agitated farm girl. "You don't think anyone else is strong enough to pursue what they want no matter what? Just because I don't plow my way through the obstacle doesn't mean there ain't virtue in waiting for the stone to roll by or in going around the thing. And maybe our goals isn't to become the strongest in the traditional sense. Like, I know Karite wants to belong and I... well, I don't know what I want yet. It'd be nice to be strong, but I haven't really met anybody I could compare myself to as far as strength goes," Orika ranted, going off from Shisei's tangent. Talking always helped her to control her emotions and for both their sakes, that was vital at the moment. "Maya's physically strong, but she ain't got anybody to support her 'cept for a few scraggly rouges, who don't exactly care that much. Shinichi's tough, but it seems to me that he has trouble keeping people loyal and that ain't good. " She trailed off and suddenly realized that she had gone off the conversation path. Struggling to remember what Shisei had been talking about, Orika picked a random spot and starting speaking again. "But I get what you're saying. It's a human thing for petty issues to bother us," she said, attacking Shisei while trying to sympathize with him at the same time, "But don't let her take over your thoughts. Trust me, Karite and I are much more of a threat to your imagined kingship. And don't think I'm the strongest just because I got lucky in a fight," Orika said honestly. She swatted at a fly, which promptly flew away to join its friends, "There's more to becoming a ninja than fighting. That's what you want, right, to be a good shinobi? Or are you just a brute obsessed with killing everyone in your way?" The girl looked softly at Shisei, wondering what his answer would be.

Would he say he was only pursuing the path of a shinobi for the power or because he really enjoyed the lifestyle? That was a question she had yet to answer herself. What did it mean to be a shinobi anyway? Were they killers only as commonly depicted or noble protectors as some people liked to imagine? All the questions were making her head spin so Orika gritted her teeth and pressed her back against the trunk of a tree, bracing herself for the mental inflow. Okay, okay, back to the basic. What was a shinobi? A ninja was a mercenary that specialized in doing acts samurai wouldn't because of the code of bushido. That could mean anything from prostitution to gain information to stealing documents. It had nothing to do with beating people to a pulp in a fight, although that was what things usually came to in this day and age. She'd seen enough of the genin return with bruises and injuries bad enough to make their mothers cry. Every since mission they went on there was a battle of some sorts. So much for the stealth shinobi were supposed to be renowned for. But was she being a hypocrite in embracing the warrior skills instead of training her stealth? After all, her own body was no fit for sneaky attacks anymore than Shisei's slim figure was meant for wielding gigantic swords. There were other ways of sneaking around, though. It was riskier, but if everyone around her were struck dumb with a good old smoke bomb, then it'd be easy to grab the object in question and escape. Or, she could try her hand at seduction. Orika was getting somewhat tired of being called unwomanly, especially since this morning she'd noticed two tiny lumps on her chest.

Kane took his time making his way to the Lagoon. His mind had been occupied by other things, like his shiny new dao and his mother and Hanabira and things like that. Therefore, when he reached the venue of the first event he was not surprised to see that there were already people there before him. But they looked like kids. Kane didn't see any of the ninja in his year, which kind of made sense. They were probably too busy and had better things to do that participate in this festival. Now that he thought about it, he remembered that Aya and Kana were on their mission, Seshiro was... yeah, not very good, and the other genin had pretty much disappeared from Shima. That left Maya. Where was she? Not that Kane would be glad to see her. They'd talked, but that had been a while ago. Not to mention the fact that she'd probably own him in this activity. The effeminate male planted his rear end down on a tree stump and watched the kids talk thoughtfully whilst waiting fot he event to begin, but not before saying a quick "Hi. Nice to meet you."

His eyes moving to his surroundings, Kane began to think on what the events could possibly entail. Swimming was probably a given since they were beside a pool for Mikado's sake. He remembered that Natamo-sensei had asked him to do some vine running the last time they were here and thought that maybe some agility and coordination-related competitions could happen too. With that in mind he tried to get his mind on it. Part of him was a little disappointed that Maya wasn't there yet, though. He decided that he hoped she was coming because he never liked blatantly obtaining victory, and because it would give him a taller stick with which to compare against. Nothing like feeling great about being better than a couple of kids with half the amount of experience as you.

Kane also wondered when the others would get here. He had seen the (relative) enthusiasm with which Shinichi had addressed the Shimagakurians just now and if that hadn't sent whispers running through the people and sparking their natural curiosity, he didn't know what would. Okay, maybe he should stop dissing their new leader. Kane could see that he was trying. They all were trying. Still, with this festival... this festival... he wondered, if Shinichi was trying too hard...

Wait. Those thoughts were negative and were more likely than not psyching him DOWN. This would not do. Just because (fine) Kane felt that beating these kids held no merit, although he knew that he really shouldn't feel that considering that he hadn't seen what they could do and stuff like that he really couldn't help it it was just a subconscious mental thing, didn't mean that he could put less than 100% into his preparation. He was beginning to wonder if he should focus before starting his sword exercises too. Maybe it would increase his learning speed. Or maybe not... he would see.

Kane took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh scent of wet plants. Wait a second. Swimming would be horrible considering how cold it was. Even if it was warmer, it was still winter. Kane now hoped that there would be no getting into the water especially since it would mess up his hair, and that was one thing he was really proud of. But even wishful thinking could not change the fact that a water-related event was practically a given and Kane reluctantly steeled himself for it.

The location also made him think back to his first memory of Shimagakure. This was actually quite a peaceful place and Kane wondered why he didn't come here more. Now he knew why so many shinobi of Shimagakure treated the Lagoon either as a place for training, sanctuary or just pure relaxation. But back to the memory. How this was related to psyching up Kane didn't know, but since he was already so far down the road, and this road brought him some measure of comfort anyway, he might as well continue walking.

When Kane had first stepped onto the shores of Shimagakure he had treated it all as a game. He was half expecting the Fire Country navy to come in and capture the whole island there and then. He guessed it was testament to the education he'd received as well as his immaturity. Now that he thought back on it, his first memory of the Lagoon had actually been Yuki and another lady... the previous weapons master... bathing... and although he hadn't felt anything then due to his lack of preference for that gender and all, conjuring that image up from his mind's archives Kane felt his heartbeat quicken slightly...

[KANE IS NOW OFFICIALLY BI OH NOES]

THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY THE WRONG THING TO BE THINKING! The famed Yamanaka tangent thinking was going into effect again and totally ruining his efforts. If this went on he stood to undo his previous efforts in calming himself down. Casting for a different thought topic, Kane looked back at the kids. They were talking perfectly fine, but one couldn't help but sense some sort of tension amongst them. Or maybe it was just in the air, but not related to them. Kane tried to deduce what type of people they would be from their appearance, and (mostly) how well they'd do in the competition. Thinking the girl looked familiar, he quickly realised that she was the tomboyish daughter of the owner of the rice farm, Mai. She looked like a tough girl and Kane wasn't actually sure that his strength would be able to hold up to her... scratch that. Noticing each individual muscle as he hadn't before, he knew with absolute certainty that hell, the power packed in them was huge.

The other boy certainly looked unique. Physically he didn't look very special. In fact his clothes seemed to plaster a scrawny frame, not to mention the fact that he was short and young. He couldn't have been more than 11. However, Kane was certainly experienced enough to know that a unique appearance almost always = clan, bloodline, deceptive impression of their true abilities, extreme skill or all of the above. Taking careful note of the boy, he noted to himself to keep an eye on this one. He also noted that he needed to train more in order to beat these kids. He couldn't be shown up by students after all.

Karite came walking through the lagoon listening for all the commotion. If it wasn't for the giant crowd he probably wouldn't have made it. Surprisingly enough it didn't seem like t many shinobi had shown themselves to take the challenge. Looking around he saw one person he had never meet but looking at the weapon bag on their hip is was easy to see they were a shinobi of the village among that sense he had never seen him and he seemed stronger than any academy student he had ever seen it was easily determined they were of Gennin or higher ranking. Ignoring the fact Karite sat down against a tree near Orika and Shisei. Looking up at the sky he figured this gave him a good opportunity to rest up and let his shoulder ease itself. Looking up at the sky he relaxed as Kore crawled into his lap and rested his head on Karite's leg. Peace was something he didnt get to much of but he enjoyed it when he could. "Either of you know whats going on? I kinda of missed the most of the speech."
