Maya rolled her shoulders and cracked her neck, looking around the grounds. The deer skins wouldn't be ready for a day or two, and those would probably be traded to Mai since Karite needed clothes. With a shrug, she let her eyes drift to her own tent. She didn't say anything, because the grounds were large enough to support a whole clan - Karite had already asked to stay here, and he was worried about imposing? She lived with lions, for the love of...she gave him a half grin and said in a low voice, "Ask Baki where to sleep. He might show ya." She was taunting him, poking and prodding. He had spent time with Kore - but Kore was still a runt. Was he afraid of Baki? Maya didn't actually care, but she was curious.

Karite smiled she was not making this easy, but Baki was an interesting animal but waking a sleeping lion was crazy. "I am not afraid of the big guy. I am sure he could kill me but I like animals. Kore for sure, that little guy grew on me quick. I was mistaken for a Tategami a couple of times while you were away. Dont worry though I stopped those clams. I don't really know what Tategami is." Karite was drifting from his original question. "So do I sleep in that big tent or the small tent?" Karite had a feeling he was about to strike a nerve with that one for sure, but it would be interesting to see how she reacted, unless she cut off his head. That would not be to good. Putting his hands around his neck he was remembering what it was like to have his head just encase something happened.

Maya jerked to her feet and let out a feral snarl, baring her teeth. "Clan leader sleeps in the big tent - you can stay in the snow or take the small one!" Maya was angry as all hell - so angry that she hadn't even bothered to taunt the boy. And even so - the village had called him Tategami? She snarled more, and pulled her arm back, her hand balled into a fist...
...And then she took a deep breath, though still her body shook. With one last angry growl, she turned her back on him and settled next to the fire, debating how best to divvy the meat. She should feet Karite the carnivore meat, teach him a lesson...then again, she was sure the crazy sword-carrier would want something to eat, now that it seemed the island woman was missing. Fine, he could take the lynx. The buck she'd cut into jerky strips - the doe, she would cure and roast for her own dinner. It would last a few nights, if not longer - she wasn't sure if Karite needed to be fed.
Baki opened an eye, lifting his head. He was alert - drowzy, but alert. His ears swiveled, and he picked up rapidly on Maya's mood. His own growl filling the air, Baki stood and stepped over the girl, diminishing her stature beneath his heavy coat. Winter was only good because of the growth of his fur that kept him warm - and kept Maya warm, which was why her main concern wasn't actually clothes. Baki's size kept her warm. Baki eyed the boy-wonder, and stood protectively over the girl.

Karite almost fell over when Maya snapped on him the way she did. It was easy to see if Karite ever had to pick who to get angry at him it would be Baki. Hopefully the large lion couldn't climb trees. Karite tried not to freak out to much cause he got his answer and he was still not done. This was the perfect setup into the next question about this Shuga woman. He was also going to ask about this other Karite. It was a rare name and it was always interesting to know about others who had the name. "So who was the clan leader then? Shuga or Karite?" Not knowing what to expect he ready himself for another back lashing. This would be worth it down the long run because he would be one step closer to understanding Maya.

Maya's eyes blazed - he had the audacity to ask that!? With a snarl, Maya lunged at the boy, aiming to knock him onto his back and demand submission. He had some guts, standing up to her - at least, that was her impression. Most of the other academy students, like that brat Shinobu, were terrified of her, and didn't even dare come near her. Xyn and Naoki seemed to be the exceptions to that rule, and even then...even then, Maya hadn't seen them in some time. They were probably gone too, way off the island. And still... "Shuga's 'sposed to be here. She's sposed to be leader - she's sposed to take care of the clan. But I'm the only one left," she growled softly, shaking her head. She pulled her lips back in a snarl and snapped her teeth. "And Karite was adopted. He didn't even have a partner yet before he left too." Slowly, almost without wanting to, Maya got off of Karite and shook herself, her entire body still tense.

Karite was taken a back as he was jumped on. It seemed that this was a sore subject for Maya. While it would have been wrong to say. Karite did try to fight though as his back touched the cold snow on the ground. He had no chance. This woman was alone because she wanted to be, not because she was different. It seemed she had been so use to people leaving she had been pushing people away. "So if Karite was adopted, does that mean I could be adopted as well? I wouldn't mind hanging around here with Kore for a long time to come. I could get use to you too I guess." Karite said with a chuckle as his white smile came through. His grey eyes locked on Maya and didnt show any sign of letting up.

Maya stiffened further - this kid pushed her buttons, and she wanted to reach out and deck him. "If the clan leader accepts you, and the rest of the clan, you can be adopted. But I don't know when Shuga plans on being back - so don't push your luck. You can train with Kore all you want, but you aren't Tategami. Not yet - and not if you keep this up," she growled softly. Shoulders slumping forward, Maya gave up on the kid. She had work to do, and it had to be done before the meat spoiled. She started with the doe, debating how large to make the slabs of meat she would have to cook. Large enough to satisfy her, obviously - did she have to feed this kid? Hell...

Maya decided that she could always cook two portions if the kid was going to be staying for a while, so she began to cut the doe into small, rationed pieces. Any normal person would think she was making small bits of meat for a stew, but Maya had long learned that smaller chunks of meat lasted longer when there weren't any animals around to hunt. Besides that, the smaller pieces would leave a larger chunk of doe for her to cut for Baki, even though the lion preferred the tough buck's meat. She leaned back, finding comfort in Baki's thick mane. She wanted to scream - she wanted...but it didn't matter what she wanted. She needed to get the work done.

Karite felt like pushing his luck he wanted to see how far the lions den went. With Maya one could never be to careful. Then again being Careful was not really his thing. He had meet tougher people then Maya before, know walked around with giant blades and a lion but tough none the less. "So apparently you dont think I have what it takes to be a Tategami. So what do I have to do to prove to you that I can be just as tough as you? I may not know much about being a shinobi and I amy not know much about being Tategami, but one thing I know is no one ever told me I couldn't for lack of trying. If I have to fight you I will, if I have to sit under a waterfall I will, even if I have to eat raw meat I will. I have what it takes, but your the first person I want to prove that to."

"I don't think you have what it takes to be much of anything, kid," Maya snarled at him, shaking her head. She was tired ... it was obvious because she'd stopped cutting meat and now leaned back against Baki, taking deep breaths. He wanted to prove how tough he was? Fine. "Try and beat me. Or Baki - you can choose. We'll even let you try more than once," she said in a low voice, obviously challenging him. Baki echoed her words with a throaty growl, and she turned back towards the meat. She didn't feel like cutting anymore - it had been ages since she'd had a spar for fun. Killing that boy on the Orochi mainland hadn't shaken her as badly as killing Kyoda - but then, Kyoda had been the first person Maya had slain, so her named was etched into Maya's mind like a bright tattoo.

Karite grinned his teeth. He wasnt much of a fighter. But he was very fast and that was always a plus in a good fight. He knew Maya was strong and more then likely would rip him apart, but Baki was faster and stronger then any human. So the only logical thing to do was to fight Maya. "Alright then, Maya I challenge you to a fight. You name the time and Place and I will be there."
Kore rose his head slightly at the words being spoken. He knew this was going to end up badly for Karite but the boy would learn that a leader must never be challenged. His pride would get the best of him. Kore knew from experience when he first arrived. Baki was just something standing in his way.

Maya let out a feral grin, her tawny eyes darkening almost visibly.
"Eager to be packed in a box?" she asked, her voice colder than it was before. Unknown to Karite, the smoldering anger she usually kept in reserve for the enemy was starting to burn. Unknown to Karite, Baki had more instinct than strength - Maya's brute strength was greater than Baki's on any given day. Baki, knowing this couldn't end well at all, growled a low warning and stepped between the two, nudging Maya towards the unfinished meat. She hadn't even gotten a fourth of the meat cut before she'd let the boy-wonder strike a nerve - Maya was really something when she wanted a fight.

Pushing against Baki and resisting for a second, Maya gave in and turned her back on the boy. It went against everything she believed, to just leave him standing on the grounds. He was really pushing it, considering he'd been the one to ask her to stay here. She should just let him deal with the little Kun'Kumo imp, it wasn't her problem. Why had she even considered letting him stay? Oh yea...he had taken care of the cubs while she was off slaughtering Orochi warriors. That's right. The thought brought her back to Seshiro. Would he even still see her as his little sister, now that she'd killed warriors that he'd probably been friends with? No matter. He was gone now too. Maya snorted, still unable to concentrate.

Karite knew he was beginning to bug her and it seemed Baki was trying to protect him. It would be wise to let her cool off before their fight. It would be bad news for him to fight her now. "Alright, Tomorrow. We will fight tomorrow morning here on the grounds. I see no reason to broadcast this to the entire village. I'll show you that I have what it takes to be greater then you think. I am no pretender Maya, I have heart and strength. If it takes me twenty years of struggle I will prove that to you of all people." Turning away he went to go lie down next to Kore his body shivering from the cold. Muttering under his icy breath "Damn snow...Damn Women on this island. I don't know which ones colder."

Maya snarled to herself in defense - cold? It was hardly cold. There was less than an inch of snow on the ground. And her? Well, it was easier than continually expecting miracles to happen. But she wasn't heartless. Maya shoved Baki to the side, stalking sulkily to the smaller tent and shoving her hand inside, rummaging for...an old bear pelt. Shuga had brought it back from one of her many adventures away from home, and it was the biggest pelt Maya had on hand. She knew Shuga had a few more of the same caliber in her tent, but those were the clan leader's furs. Maya would have to hunt more animals, or find ones that had died, and make more furs...if her lynx came out the right way. She swallowed her pride and threw the pelt with force at Karite's face. She knew it was too soft to cause any damage - it had been cured almost perfectly, and the quality was top-notch. But it still felt good. She huffed, turning back to her task. It wasn't cold.
