This is only a recent development for me, but I've come to get really bored with DoA. It's a bit difficult to get close with other members since the board is so strictly "Doll talk only!" It can come to feel a little isolating, and less of a community.

I've become aware of this when over the summer I joined another forum for a band and I got to know many members by name and we got to talk to each other about anything and everything. We'd vid-chat a lot and the members have gone on camping trips together multiple times. I wish I could have that camaraderie on DoA.

I'm a bit dissapointed with DOA for things like
- dead threads that can no longer be accessed but the link is still up
- cant search for things under 4 letters (DOC,DOT,Wig,AOD,tan,ect...)
I use the place mainly for help and searches, I don't feel any community feeling with the forum like I do with other place so it's just a guidebook for me.

Technically, you can search for things with only three characters, you just have to add an asterisk at the end -- i.e. "dod*" Unfortunately, it does act as a wildcard, which means you end up with some irrelevant results too, but tends to work fairly well to find threads if you're filtering your search for titles only.

As for DoA, I don't always understand the reasoning for deciding certain sculpts are on- or off-topic, but I can understand that they want to limit the focus of the forum since it's already fairly busy, and they have to draw a line somewhere. I don't really have any complaints.

As one who lurks DOA a lot over the passed year, I can still say there's things I like and a lot of things I tend to dislike about DOA. That said, I still think it's a great site for what it is.

I just think that though it is their site and their rules need to be followed and off topic dolls not being allowed. The ones they deem offtopic I can often find myself arguing with their choices. Not that one opinion matters at all. Or even the fact I might be biased because I pay attention to Impldoll coming out with new dolls and each of the fantasy dolls being deemed offtopic for 'aesthetic' reasons..

I find there's some that if Soom (great and beautiful dolls I know) had come out with the dolls Impldoll had come out with, they wouldn't have been contested. But again it may be my bias for liking the company and the dolls from it.

I think I've got to stop basing my doll choices on what is on topic to DOA to really enjoy the hobby, even though I do enjoy the hobby and the dolls I do have immensely.

I admit to being frustrated already, without being a member, simply because I cannot join yet. I understand they are busy and a small number of people volunteering their time to run this, but as someone new to the hobby, between what I hear about people being elitist on DoA in their attitude towards certain dolls, and the fact that membership is so restricted they (apparently) are not allowing anyone to join until June, even with invitations from existing members? It's pretty darn discouraging.

I'm actually kind of disgusted. ZoZ and Dairyland are much nicer, I was approved for membership to those within minutes.

Of course, I'm also trying to start sales of jewelry for BJDs as well as get into the communities so I can learn info for care/faceups/clothing patterns/etc before I buy my own, and everyone wants to see feedback, it's hard to get feedback unless you can sell, and the best place for exposure on selling is DoA, so it's kind of a double-screwed that I can't get on there. This world of information is kinda rough, actually. I'm having an equivalent issue in job-searching: Everyone wants you to have 2+ years of experience, but you can't get that unless you get a job. Endless cycle of getting nowhere.

Same here. I used to spend a ton of time on DOA, but it was just more difficult to build actual friendships and things, so now I prefer the Ravelry BJD group, and just go to DOA to look at the marketplace or browse the DIY and galleries. I don't need it for new releases, since I'm on the mailing lists of the companies I love, and usually hear about new ones from people I know with dolls.

I'd love to go to one of my local meetups (I moved kinda recently), but again, I know I'm being stupid, but I'd feel like an outsider unless I brought along a friend, and the only one who's into dolls is in another state. So, I'm gonna have to do something about that, or just get over it, but I still wish it felt more welcoming.

I am disappointed, yes.

-Too many repetitive threads
-Too many arbitrary rulings of what is on and off topic
-Too much repressed drama under a glossy candy coating

I still use the site, because it's a huge resource, but I'm trying to branch out a bit. It isn't the end all be all when it comes to doll forums. There are other forums that are a lot more lenient when it comes to what is allowed to be discussed, and they get along just fine even with their own heavy flow of site traffic.

I just want... More community, and fewer limitations.

There've been times I've rolled my eyes at their rules, but nothing's bothered me too much. I've had long off-topic conversations with people via the private message system, and it's not like they usually care if you post something that has both on and off topic comments/dolls on it. As for making friends, that seems to be easier when you hang out in the waiting rooms a lot, but that's just my experience.
Oh, and at least one of the times they were closed to new members had to do with upgrading their system, not limiting membership. Not sure why it took them so long, though.

I've been a member of DOA since '04 and yea, they have gotten a bit overboard with the partial bans, off topic dolls, and what not. My friend was partially banned from the marketplace because the mods misunderstood a post of hers about a possible future trade. (She was expressing feelings, not intent). She was the leader in a GO and it was really inconvenient to not have access to her own thread. >.>

I'm disappointed in DoA because it restricts new members from joining by asking them for a invitation code.

I only have one gripe with DoA. They NEED an off-topic forum! 97% of my dolls are on-topic, but I do have 3 that are off-topic, and it's kind of sad that I can't share them on DoA.

I've only been a member of DoA for 3 years, but I took a long hiatus in my first year. I haven't had any problems with the mods, except for getting some posts moved, so I can't really say anything with that.

I enjoy the forums a lot. And I really like that companies post news on there, so I can easily see it from there instead of compulsively checking 30 different company websites lol.

People-wise, I've met some amazing people there and have bought some equally amazing dolls. DoA has helped me a lot in this hobby, and I continue to enjoy it and use it to this day.

I don't mind the strict nature of the forums. Since dolls are expensive and hard to come by if you want a specific one, it keeps the marketplace there clean. My only problem is someone like me, who doesn't know anyone in DoA, can't get in due to no invite. And there is a specific BJD I've been hunting for, so it's a little sad I can't go on there to check if one is available.
