Sirius shrugged. He had, indeed, tried what she suggested. He didn't want to shoot it down and cause her more strife about it, because, really, all she wanted to do was help. He just had to face the fact that Regulus was a lost cause.
Sirius looked up at her earnest face and tried to make her see that he had the door open, but knew Regulus would never come. He shrugged again.
"Don't worry about it, Marketa. I have a family; and he has one, also. We may be worlds apart, but the little kid I once lived is still in here," he patted his chest to indicate his heart. "Hell, I still love him... but we're on different sides. He's proven over and over that James and Remus and Peter are better brothers. I don't want that hanging over me."

Marketa gave the smallest of sighs; it was so sad to see two brothers against one another like this. Though, the more she thought about Regulus, the more she seemed to recall about him. There were rumors about him, too. Bad ones. The thought triggered something in her memory; scraps of old newspaper in the bins of Wizarding shops, putting clues together from the muggle paper as well, hearing neighbors talk about strange green fireworks showing above peoples' houses. The thought made her queasy. She told herself repeatedly 'Just ask him, just ask him, once he tells you you're just being silly you'll feel better,' but it couldn't quite come when she tried.
"Sirius...I live in a Muggle house, and...I've been hearing tings about dis world...bad tings.... Sirius, are dey true? Is He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named really starting to go after de Muggles?" If anyone would know, it would be Sirius Black, pureblood wizard extraordinaire, wouldn't it?

"Before I ran away," Sirius began gravely. "The 'Dark Lord' tried to recruit me as a 'Death Eater'. In fact, that was largely the reason why I left. You see, as I'm the heir to the 'Ancient and Most Noble House of Black' so Voldemort assumed that I would be a sure add to his list of minions. He was wrong.
Now, I don't know if they are attacking muggles, but I sure as hell know that they are gaining power in the wizarding world. If they aren't attacking muggles already, they soon will be... with all that 'blood superiority' and all."
His face was full of spite, now. Passionate and angry. He nervously ran his fingers through his hair.
"I've heard odd things about this so-called Dark Lord - having to do with his thirst for power and immortality. They say that he is one of the most powerful dark wizards that has ever emerged... opposing him will be sure death.
I don't care, though. I'll never join that kind of lot."
Sirius looked at her, his gray eyes filled with sorrow. He smiled with embarrassment at his little rant. It didn't even fully address her question!

Marketa's lips tightened slightly with sorry, her face drawing in and making her look ages older than she really was. She kept her eyes downcast and bit her lip. "I'm mostly just worried about my mudder and da...and Yvonne..." her voice shook and she felt as if she were swallowing clay.

"It's highly unlikely that they will be singled out for targeting," Sirius assured her. "Especially if they don't live in Britain..."
Sirius did not know much about Marketa's parents, but he did know that if they lived in another country, it would be a long shot to think that they could be harmed. But, times were getting dark.

"I-...I know. I know I would just feel better if I knew, you know?" Mar asked. She then blinked several times, realizing exactly how many times she'd said know or a variation of the word in that sentence. "Dat made no sense..."

Sirius burst out laughing. In fact, for a moment, the laughter was so loud that he was almost afraid that his napping friend would awake. Almost.
"Ah, yes. It would be better if it was more certain. Life itself is unpredictable, though. All I can say is that you should take it as it comes and focus on your studies," Sirius told her, still smiling.

Remus mumbled something in his sleep and turned his head, but quickly fell silent again.
Marketa looked at Remus for a moment in alarm, ready to apologize for waking him, but then relaxed again and smiled at Sirius. "Yes, I tend to worry too much about everyting. I do have to focus on my studies, and hopefully I'll make a few friends too. Besides you, of course. You're already my friend." She pushed her hair back and put it into plaited pigtails at the sides of her head using her wand. Much faster than the muggle way.

Sirius smiled. "That's really sweet of you to say, considering we haven't known eachother that long." He looked down at his shoes, ignoring the plaiting, which made him think of old days when he used to chase after the pretty pig-tailed girls at the playground... things were so much simpler when he was younger.

Marketa blushed, hoping she hadn't been too straightforward in saying Sirius was her friend. They had seemed to get along easily. She noticed his sudden lack of eye contact and tilted her head in both a childlike and cat-like manner. "Is someting wrong? Did I do someting?" she asked confusedly.

"Of course not!" He said automatically, his head bobbing up. "Just thinking is all. Your hair reminded me of... happier times, I suppose." He grinned foolishly, both at his response and at the way Marketa was looking at him.

Mar's nose wrinkled. "Are you laughing at me, Sirius Black?" she asked, feigning hurt and a scowl. "Because even dough I don't say some incantations de right way, I still trow angry hex!"

Sirius looked taken aback. "No, no no," he said, alarmed. "I sware I wasn't laughing at you! I'd rather you not hex me..."
He scooted away from her a little bit.

Mar's fake scowl quickly turned into a grin and small giggle. "I joke, I tease, I do not hex for revenge!" she assured him. His expression was quite funny.

Sirius tsked, refraining from letting out a chuckle. "Your jokes are a lot meaner than James' and mine," he pouted, putting an emphasis on the word 'meaner' and punctuating it with an extension of his upper lip.
