They are giving the world a common enemy...themselves. The world will unify to destroy them, therefore causing peace, because countries are no longer fighting each other.

Honestly...that seems like a temporary solution, because what's to stop them from fighting again after they get destroyed or worse captured?

Mostly because you dont get to actually see it until the second season (end of the first) because before that all you see is the silhouette of the gundam
