Walter's eyebrows came up further, and he smiled slightly. "I never said you weren't. It's an expression. Did you ever think that your clothing easily identifies you as a witch? It's October; the rest of us are freezing. We're trying to blend-"
He broke off as he realized that Luke had said something, and his smile disappeared as he recognized what it had been. "Don't worry about it, Luke. No one will have any reason to connect you to the Inn at all." He hoped. If they did, he would just have to deal with it.
Alirialie stepped lightly on his foot, and he looked down. "James is back," she murmured.
"Of course he is," sighed Walter.

Shade smiled as best he could, "They know we're out." "Hm...?" Jane opened one eye to look down at him, "And?" "Just telling you so." Jane rolled her eyes and placed Shade next to her as she got up and streached. She had caught sight of them by now, she waited to see what Wink would do.

Rayne looked towards the girl, her staff of cedar still in her hand. ember was on her shoulder. she looked towards the boys. "you know her, i take it?" she asked, one eyebrow slightly raised. she had already resigned herself to the fact that there would probably be a lot more interruptions along the way.

Walter walked calmly up to James, took a gentle but firm hold on the boy's elbow, and lead him out of earshot of the other two. "Right. So what are you doing here? And don't think you can slither out of answering again. It's dangerous here, James, and I don't mean the regular type of danger."
He stopped suddenly, and looked at the boy thoughtfully. "How is your acting? Still stellar?" He didn't wait for an answer. "Good. From now on, your name is..." He trailed off, trying to think of something easy to remember. "Jane. You live in Oxford. I'll buy you a dress tomorrow. And please don't start on the rant again," he added wearily. "You do look .... less masculine; this time it's actually going to be useful."

Rayne looked at the two, girl and boy, in conversation. concentrating on a spot in the air next to them, she could suddenly pick up what they were saying. "... t's dangerous here, James, and I don't mean the regular type of danger." 'james.. what a wierd name for a girl' she thought. "How is your acting? Still stellar? Good. From now on, your name is.... Jane. You live in Oxford. I'll buy you a dress tomorrow. And please don't start on the rant again, You do look .... less masculine; this time it's actually going to be useful." now she was seriously confused. 'so, the boy thinks the girl is a boy, and plans on masquerading her as a girl. wow. thats confusing, even for me.' breaking away her concentration on their conversation, she pondered whether the boy should know that this.. 'james' was really a girl. how he hadn't realised it yet, she didnt know. 'well, he does seem to have know her for a while, and thought she was a boy for a while, so this 'fact' of his clouded his seeing that what he thought was wrong. and he isnt a witch, and i know 'normal' people think and see differently to us. maybe thats why i noticed this and he didnt. she sighed. 'well, if he doesnt know, the girl obviously doesnt want him to know. so i wont interject. yet.'

Luke nodded slightly to Walter's reassurance but he had to admit he wasn't really convinced. Walter hadn't been living with his father for the last few years, he had gotten worse since their mother had died. He tried to put him out of his mind though; there was far more going on than just that now.
Seeing the boy from earlier reappearing again an eyebrow started to rais but it quckly changed to a frown when Walter walked him away some distance. Luke took a step forward but then stopped realizing Walter obviously wanted to speak quietly with him. Just what was he playing at? Didn't he trust him? Luke trusted him so why couldn't he trust Luke and tell him what was going on?
He was about to ask just that when he stoped, feeling the familiar burning and was forced to cough slightly to clear his throat. It was only a short cough, one that most would dismiss as normal. He looked down, his gaze going to the ground while he held Rhynll close, his fingers embedding in his daemon's fur, stroking, more for his own comfort than anything else. He felt horribly guilty. His brother had come from who knew where and it just had to be on a day when his cough was particularly bad. He could likely hold it off for several hours and he just hoped by that time that he would have a room in an inn some where so Walter wouldn't have to know about and worry about it. "He'll find out," Rhynll said soflty. "If he doesn't know already." Luke merely nodded, agreeing. His daemon always had the uncanny knowledge of knowing exactly what was worrying Luke, though he wasn't all that hard to read.
((sorry my posting has been so sparse guys, last couple of weeks of the year for university. My posting should be increasing over the next week or so as my assignments start to get submitted and I'll be completely finished after the 5th November. Just don't forget to wait for Wolfshadow to post))

"I couldn't sleep," Jane said pulling her elbow out of Wink's grasp. "I know full well what goes on at night, but you know I work at night. As for being here now, I live here." She waved towards the shop front. She ran a hand though her hair, pulling it out of her eyes. "My acting has better be stellar if I want to live in this city." She stoped and blinked the last part of his repremend sinking in. "A dress? You know I'd rather run into the Church officals then wear one."

Dani woke up to a sharp poke in her cheek, courtesy of Arba's nose. She swatted it away and glared at the owner. "What in the world was that for?" she whispered, aware of her sleeping father and brother, whom she did not want to wake. Still, she was annoyed, and her voice crept up in volume because of it. She and Arba looked at eachother in silence for a few minutes before they deemed it safe to speak.
The wolf managed a half-shug. "You were dozing, and I thought you might actually want to lay in bed. Besides," he added, "Look at the end of the street."
Dani frowned and did as the daemon bade her. Weren't they supposed to be linked, meaning Arba should be as tired as she was? In all truth, he had just woken up to faint voices and nudged Dani awake. Not that he would tell her that. They both liked to project a slight air of mystery, and this was one of the few times they could do it tp each other.
Dani turned her head, looking towards the end of the street. There were a handful of shadows gathered there, two farther away from the others. Familiarity tugged at the back of Dani's mind, and she squinted to try and get a better view of the people and daemons. "Is that..."
Arba finished the thought for her. "...Luke and the other people he was with?" He nodded. "I think so. Guess they weren't fleeing the city after all."

Walter's face stayed serene. "Actually, no, you don't live here. You are getting out of town, and the best way to get you out of town is in disguise. Thus, the dress. Stop whining. After we get out of London you can go wherever you want, and wear whatever you please, obviously, but I'm not leaving you here. Maybe you haven't noticed, but people in our line of work seem to be some of the prime targets."
"Better jobs in Oxford," he added noncommitally, then turned and walked back to his other companions.

That caught Jane's attenction. "What do you mean by better jobs?" she asked, jogging to cach up with Wink. If the pay was better over in Oxford she would leave London in a heartbeat, even if it was in a dress, and being called by her true name. Wink was just as stubbon as she was, if not more. Once he said he was taking her out, he would even if she was kicking and screaming. Shade rolled his eyes and sighed. "We're going to have to find another artest..."

Luke's gaze flicked constantly between his older brother and this new boy who Walter seemed to know. He wanted to work out exactly what their relationship was.
As Walter came back Luke rose his hand to his mouth and yawned widely. It was very late and he was tired, his coughing always made him tired. "What inn will we be staying at?" he asked, rather anxious to get there and to bed. Both to sleep and also so that if his coughing came again he could do so in private. He was worried that it would come before he had a chance to keep it from his brother if they didn't get on their way soon. And worried that his father might come looking for them and find him standing in the street like this.

Walter looked over at Luke to respond and was struck by how tired his face looked. Actually, tired didn't even touch how he looked; he seemed ready to collapse, almost ill. Walter reached out to put a hand on his shoulder.
The next second, there was a sharp pain in his leg. He looked sharply down at Alirialie; she had a claw stuck in his leg. "Pay attention, Walter," she whispered, nodding vaguely in the direction of his old house.
Walter glanced up, first in the opposite direction, then in the direction Alirialie had indicated, just so it wouldn't seem like he was looking for anything in particular. James would see through it, of course, but nothing could be done about that.
Far down the road, a tall figure was coming slowly towards them. They seemed to be having trouble keeping their balance. Walter's blood seemed to turn to ice, just as it had-
He turned back to the others, thinking. "Let's try the one just East," he said, calmly, walking onto a connecting street that would get them quickly away from this road. "That one is very nice. Two rooms should be enough. You don't mind sharing a room, do you Ryane? James? I'll get rooms with two beds apiece, obviously," he added.

Luke, despite appearances, was sharp and he knew how to read people. Afterall he had learnt to read his father easily enough to learn when it was safe to say what. He caught the glances to either side and the subtle changes in his face as he looked down the street. Concerned he followed the gaze and made out the figure stumbling towards him. It didn't take him long to recognise that gait as his father and he immediately stiffened as fear shot through him. It was like his own thoughts and fears had just manifested themselves!
He nodded quickly and followed as Walter went down another street. He was a little worried about sharing a room with Walter but then again, after catching a glimpse of his father out looking for him, he didn't want to be left alone just yet. Maybe he could get some time alone... but who was he kidding? It wasn't like the cough ever obeyed him and came whenever he wanted it to. He sighed and hugged Rhynll tighter as he licked Luke's cheek a couple of times; why couldn't things just be simple for once in his life?

Dani watched as two of the group looked behind them, and seeing soemthing, hastily continued down the street and out of sight. She frowned, Arba whining softly beside her.
"What's going on?" The way they rushed away before, it made them look as though they didn't want to be in one place for too long. Luke had seemed the same way when we first met..." She stopped talking, a troubled expression on her face.
Arba shifted restlessly, "And don't forget the way he looked at us when we met the second time. He seemed angry...afraid, like he didn't want to see us again. Like he'd rather remain hidden."
Dani nodded, following the train of thought. "...And you smelled blood on him, but we couldn't see any injuries, and he seemed well enough. He got really nervous when we mentioned it...You don't think..."
Arba shrugged and hopped off the bed. "I don't know, but it is possible. People don't usually act like that, even these days. It isn't usual. He's hiding something, and that alone is suspicious." He stopped at the door and looked back at Dani impatiently. The girl was still sitting on her bed, biting her lower lip thoughtfully. "He didn't seem like a bad person, though. He seemed nice."
Arba sighed and walked back to Dani, bting her ankle gently and pulling on it. "Still, we should check this out. You said it yourself, he acts odd. Maybe it's nothing, but there's always that chance..." Dani nodded and got up and ran quietly out the door and downstairs, leaving her house without making a noise. Arba was trotting along beside her, and before they ran of in the direction she'd seen the group of people heading, Dani said, "I don't think he's the murderer. But something's wrong."

Jane looked back at the figure ambiling towards them. It didn't look like the murderer...but it scared the kid and Wink something bad. She then passed a glance at the other woman, the witch. "You a traveling compainion as well?"
