~Dropping the Gifts Off~
Rabid scampered back to Deimos' room, only barely out of breath. She struggled to retrieve Jizzy and her son's gifts from Liam's trembling arms, but eventually succeeded and placed them gently before the door, along with a note. She inhaled deeply and...
What the Hell?
She smelled one of her own kind. No, no, it was definitely a full...and a strong one. Mymymy...how strange!
"Urgh...HURRY!"
"Alright, alright!" Rabid yelled and began running to their next destination.
The Note Jizzy! Your gift is a very traditional one for the Vavvian people. In Mei-Vaar, only one holiday is celebrated. This holiday is called "En Ai'aleth" which roughly translated to "The Day of Giving". For months before this day, the Vavvian gem shops are horribly busy. The people are buying the an'raei; gems that can be filled with most anything and set in jewelry. This traditions allows for each Vavvian to give and recieve a different an'raei each year. According to legend, the an'raei are enchanted and set a charm correspondinding to the meaning of the an'raei on its owner. It seems to be fairly true. Your an'raei can be strung onto a chain to be worn as a necklace or just placed around to look cool. Yours and only yours symbolizes luck. We all know you need some of that. I hope Deimos likes his gifts. We tried! We really did! He's a hard kid to shop for! Well, I'll see you soon! Much love!

--And let the chaos begin...--Duke Silverwing "Do we have to?" The all too familiar phrase was droned by the rather miffed Rhadamanthus, Rhad had finally grown a bit acustomed to Duke. Enough to at least to call him a friend.
Leonie giggled a bit. "It's called good cheer you scrooge." She adjusted her scarf that was wrapping loosely around her neck. "'Sides, Santa's watching, I wanna get on his good list!"
Duke smiled, patting their heads. "Don't worry you've been good kids, despite certain someones misbehaving I'm sure Santa's gonna bring you two loads of presents."
"He better."
"...heh."
Knowing no other place to find Jizzy, he decided to leave his gifts by the door. The first gift was a magnificant guitar , a book the laid against that read "Guitar for Beginners", a brand new amp with a red bow on top of it, cords, electric headphones, and a tiny pouch tied to the neck with four picks inside. Attached to the pouch was a tag, it read... ( You can direct link if you like )The Tag To: Deimos From: Duke and the kids. Next to the guitar was an odd rocking horse, for it wasn't a horse it was a lion! Attached to the yellow lion was a tag it read... ( You can direct link if you like )The Tag To: Tal <3 From: Duke and the kids. Ps: The back extends magically so it can be more comfortable for Tal. The third and final arangement of gifts where laying nicely inside of a basket. Inside the basket was a very beautiful ring, earplugs, and a silver barrette with an onyx stone in the middle of it.The Tag To: Jizzy From: Duke and the kids. Ps: There is an extra set of earplugs for Tal, they're in case Deimos decides not to use the headphones. The ring and barrette has protection spells on them to keepp you safe. The ring is intended for Tal, but he's a bit too young. Smiling he lead Rhad and Leo away. "Come on it's time for bed..."
"Ok." the replied quietly, walking down the hall to their apartment.

 Merry Christmas -- December 25th, 2005
"I said I was sorry, Mahlah!
"I missed the whole party because of you.. Urghh.. I.. Who knows what happened that I missed."
"Nothing much happened, I told you that already. Please don't be angry with me.
The door to Deimos room jiggled open and Jizzy stormed in, followed by Jean Claude and Deimos. "I am angry with you. You had no right. You know how succuptable I am!"
"But you were so tense, Mahlah.. Please forgive me."
Deimos rolled hsi eyes as they grownups kept bickering. He disliked Jean Claude, very much so, but he had to admit. Thier argument was fun to watch, for a while.. His attention slipped easily to the wrapped packages outside the door, quite a few of them with his name on it.
He grinned braodly, moving to them. He loved this Christmas. He still felt a longing to go to his ship, but for now these presents would have to do.
An eyepatch, a drawing and some chocolate. Score! He opened the chocolates immediatly, munching on them with his eypatch covering his right eye. Let's see what else.. Jizzy, Jizzy, Tal, Deimos!Quickly he began unwrapping the gift and his jaw dropped.
"A GUITAR!!" He said, his voice cracking from glee. He picked it up, rushing his fingers across the smooth surface, plucking one of the strings. A book came with it, as well as an amp.
"No sex won't make it up to me Jean Claude, you know that. Oh.. SOmeone left us presents." Jizzy attention was tossed from her argument as her eyes fell on Deimos' guitar. 'Please let me have earplugs, please let me have earplugs..'
"But everyone loves se... ooh a guitar.."
Jean Claude reached to touch it but Deimos pulled it away, holding it close to him. "It isn't yours.." He said in a hiss..
"Possesive little bugger, isn't he.." Jean Claude noted, taking a step back.. He moved to Jizzy. "Well Mahlah, I should depart while it's still dark."
"Yah, yah, get out of here you crazy coot.." She said jokingly, giving her old friend a short hug.
"Goodbye Mahlah, Goodbye Deimos." He ruffled up Deimos hair, which brought about another hiss. He chuckled. "Keep an eye on the little demon, Mahlah.. And don't forget to visit.." He said, and left the room out into the night.
"It's about time he left.." Deimos said, fumblign with the wires as he plugged the guitar into the amp.
"You could have been a bit nicer, Die.."
"Not really.." He said matter-of-factly and he stummed the guitar sending soundwaves bouncing everywhere.
Jizzy covered her ears. "Off to bed! Now! Guitar practice later!" She barked, hoping against hope she'd find some earplugs.
Deimos gurmbled putting the guitar fdown and pickign up the book. "Fine, tommorow." He said simply and trudged off to his room.

 --Guitars - December 26th, 2005 --
Deimos yawned, peering over at his clock. 6 o' clock.. That was good enough for him. He streched, the 'Guitar for Begginers' book that he had been reading before he fell asleep tumbled to the ground.
He smakced his lisp together, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. It was time to practice. Jumping up from his bed, he moved to the guitar which lay on the floor by the amp. It was ever better looking in the daytime than at night.
He pickd it up, feeling the smooth material under his fingers, and drew the strap around him. He twirled a pick in his clawed fingers, the other hand in one of the placements he had read in his book and he strummed.
The chord was dissonant, odd, but the true sound was hidden in there somewhere. He'd have to practice, a lot.. His tail rached out for the fallen book and he was suddenly very glad it was so flexible as it tugged the book towards him. Adjusting it's postiong on his tail, he lifted it up and read the chord, trying again.. and again and again.
In the other room Jizzy was inmensely glad the Duke HAD given her earplugs and that she had been smart enoguh to wear them to bed.

--Happy New Year - December 31, 2005/January 1st, 2006 --
"What are you wearing on your head?" Deimos asked as his mother and Tal suddenly strode into his room, tiara's on thier heads and beads aroudn thier necks.
"New Years hats!" Jizzy repleid cheerfully, slapping one onto her son's head. "Today is the last day fo the old eyar. We must welcome the new year with much shouting!!!" SHe flipped on the TV, turning to an terran channel where a bunch of people stood, watching a silver ball which sat unmoving a top a building.
"It's jsut another year.." Deimos said cynically, glancing over at the clock. 11:58..
"Exactly. We have to start it off on the right foot! SO get ready!" Tal began to clap, the exitement making him giggle.
Deimos rolled his eyes, may as well play along. What astupid holiday, celebrating a new year. It'd probably be the same as the last one anyways.
'aww come on, lighten up. Oh oh shh.. the ball is dropping
It was in fact dropping and the coundown began.

-- Enemies Closer - January 2nd, 2006 --
Deimos was grinning broadlyas he looked out onto the frozen lake from aboard his ship, the Black Dawn. He coudln't sail, not yet, the lake was still frozen, but that hadn't stopped him from coming out every day onto his ship after guitar practice.
"We're devils and black sheep and really bad eggs, drink up me hearties, yo ho.. Yo Ho, Yo Ho A pirate's life for me."
The moment they arrived back home, Sabriel had wanted to go outside. Chin had no idea why, but she had obliged him, to keep up the good mood the baby was in after finding his lion. She'd showed him to most of the panther-free outdoors, and was heading for the lake, curious herself to see what it was like. She hadn't really seen it before.
As they approached it, Chin kept looking at a dark shape on the water, not sure whether it was a trick of the eyes or not. It looked a little bit like a ship...but wasn't the lake frozen?
Sabriel had left his jar back home in favor of the lion plushie. He wasn't interested in mysterious ships - he was on the lookout for panthers on the prowl. The grounds could hide hundreds of them.
Deimos shivered a bit in the cold and gaze out back to shore. It wasn't to far off, but he had drifted a bit further than he liked. Rushing to the hull of the ship he took the wheel, truning it cautiously. The ship tilted, turning. Deimos looked up at the still open sailed and smirked. Summoning up his air magic he filled the sails, sending the ship thrusting foward, cutting through the icy water.
What the...Chin couldn't believe it. The lake had to be frozen - or else it felt much colder out than it really was. And it wasn't even breezy out! She picked up the pace, now able to read the words Black Dawn dark against the hull. It was a far stretch, but the only person she knew that would have a ship was Deimos. That'd be weird, though.
There was someone at the wheel. It wasn't a freaky ghost ship after all. She waved and called, "Hey!" not entirely sure they would see.
Sabriel clung tighter to her shirt, put off-balance by the wave. Hearing a soft 'whoosh' from the sails billowing, he perked his ears. He craned his neck up until he could see the ship, and was puzzled even more at the sight. What was that?
Deimos heard a voice call out to him adn he quinted, the figures on the shore becoming clearer. Oh, it was Ms. CHin and the traitor. He growled slightly, killing off the wind as he steered the ship to shore. " 'Lo Ms. Chin!" He cried out from the hull, jumpign straight off the ship, filling his claok with air to slow his descent. He sent a piercing glare at Sabriel though.
"Hi De-" Her voice broke off. He'd jumped! But he fell in more of a glide than a fall, a drifting slow drop to the shore. Chin had to steady herself; she smiled weakly at Deimos when he landed. "Where'd you learn how to do that?" She noticed the glare but didn't comment, her worries confirmed - the two really did hate each other.
Oh. It was HIM again. Sabriel, returning the glare, was both annoyed and glad to see Deimos - he could finally prove he was so much cooler. He held up the lion, swishing his tails. "Cat." he said proudly.
"I learned. Once I grew I went to Jabir's office and he told me my alignment. I'm fire and air, so I can fly." He said simply with a shrug.
Deimos looked down disdanfully at the cat, then smirked. "I can also set things on fire." He said, not looking at Chin or Sabriel, but at the lion with a smug grin. Sabriel had taken Zir, now it was time for payback.
"Neat. Scary, but neat."
Sabriel was irritated at Deimos' attitude towards his lion, but the threat...he wouldn't! Clinging protectively to the stuffed animal, he growled at the boy, just daring him to try it.
"Sabriel..." Chin warned him. It wasn't her right to stop Deimos, but she could keep the other one in line. Sabriel growled even louder.
One of Deimos' eyebrow wings arched up, the smirk still plastered onto his face. He didn't want to hurt Sabriel, he'd get in too much trouble for that. He looked up to Chin. "You want to go on my ship? We can't sail much, but I can show you around." He offered, then turned to Sabriel. "And you can get a good look at it. You forget you agreed to part of my crew."
"Oh, sure, that's fine. Lead on!" She smiled. "Is the lake still frozen, by the way?" The ship moving was still a puzzle to her. Chin was glad someone had some self-control - Sabriel's claws were still pricking her back, clenched in response to his feelings.
He gave Deimos another glare, annoyed that he'd actually accepted to be part of his dumb crew. Then Deimos showed his true colors. Stupid jerk. Stupid Zir.
"Yah, it's forzen. The ice near shore is thin, so I can sail through it, but not to far. Wait here." He instructed, walking up to the side of the ship. Fillign his cloak with air, he rose up, leaping onto the ship.
A mintue or so later a long gangplank was lowered off the side of the ship. "THis way."
Chin stepped back to avoid the gangplank, careful not to slip on the icy grass. She tested it with a foot, secured Sabriel on her shoulders (however she'd love to see him fall in, he'd learn something from being such a pain) and followed it up to the Black Dawn.
"Wow." she said appreciatively, stepping onto the deck. Well, you couldn't deny he was a captain now...though she wondered where the ship came from, it felt she'd asked enough already. There were lots and lots of questions in line.
Sabriel looked properly contemptuous of the ship. He really was amazed, though. And jealous. But he'd never, ever let Deimos know that. Frowning, he hugged the lion closer.
"This is my girl.. The Black Dawn.. Beautiful isn't she?" He said proudly, making a sweeping movement with his hands. "Once spring comes I'll start sailing her." He said. "I've been practicing up there." He said, poitning to the helm of the ship. His eyes lingered back to the lion and he smiled wider. "Only crew members are allowed below deck, so you'll have to stay here if Sabriel wants to see. SOrry, Ms. Chin."
"Very beautiful." Chin could only agree, seeing how proud he was of the Black Dawn. "Are you going to invite anyone to watch her first...um, her maiden voyage?" That'd be neat, especially in the spring...but it was so far away.
Glancing up at Sabriel, who was sulking, she hesitated a moment before nodding. "That's all right - you two go ahead. Don't let him get into too much trouble." she added. She could be making a terrible mistake, here, but the last time hadn't gone too bad, if that was anything to go by.
Besides, they were just going to go at each other's throats someday later. Might as well.
What he wanted didn't seem to make any difference, as he was plunked down on the deck all the same. After giving Chinchillie an annoyed look, Sabriel crossed his arms and glared stubbornly at Deimos, refusing to budge from the spot.
Deimos walked to the cat and picked him up. He knew how to carry a bay, he had to carry hsi younger brother all the time. "Make even a scratch and I'll burn you.." He whispered threateningly as they walked away from Chin, starting down the stairs.
Tensing at the touch of his most hated enemies' hands, it was hard not to go into attack mode. Deimos was evil enough to do what he said. Maybe he could give the lion time to run away before it was toasted...no, he'd probably sacrifice it and save himself. It was an evil guardian, so it'd escape just fine.
Still, he growled and hissed and generally tried to make things miserable for Deimos the best he could.
Once they got below, Deimos let Sabriel down, but his hand remained close, moving until it grasped the Lion's head tightly. His eyes flared. "I made you part of my crew, and you betrayed me.. I should punish you for that." He growled, his hand noticably ehating up slowly, though no sparks or fire appeared.
Sabriel cracked his tails against the floor, looking intensely hateful of Deimos. He wasn't going to give up the lion. And Deimos was the traitor! He'd been on Jizzy's side, and tried to get the bear for her! He didn't want stupid Zir any more.
But he couldn't say that. He tugged on the lion hard, trying to pull it free; he could actually feel the heat on his paws when they got close to Deimos' hand. The fiend was trying to burn up his lion!
Deimos' eyes narrowed as Sabriel didn't let go. "You were good too. Got it away from Mother. Why.. why did you keep Zir?" He asked, the heat growing steadily, though it was yet not hot enough to burn the lion.
Okay. If he wasn't going to let go...Sabriel concentrated on the question, though he still kept a vain hope Deimos would give up the lion. "j**!" he tried. That HAD to explain it. The evil Jizzy was behind it all.
Mother? His mind tried to find a logical reason that Sabriel was crying out Mother's name. "Mother never got Zir. She stopped trying after we beat her. Zir's mine, not anyone elses." He said, hoping this would clear things up, though he wasn;t sure what the cat meant, and he didn;t elt go of the lion, though the heat decreased a bit.
The lessened heat was a relief. After they beat her? But...that didn't make any sense, since Deimos was on her orders to get it.
He just looked at Dei, very confused.
Deimos arched another eyebrow at Sabriel's confused face. "They got some other bear for thier dumb zoo. I don't give Zir away to anyone, especially not for some zoo. He;s a pirate, he doens;t go in a cage." He lessened his grip. He didn't belive Sabriel to be that good an actor to have that face of confusion.
Now that he knew Zir was a guardian, Sabriel thought they'd have a lot of trouble keeping a pirate bear in a block zoo. Deimos was probably telling the truth. It wasn't worth the indignity to actually say that, but if he ever wanted to see daylight again...
...mean Deimos.
Sabriel's ears fell back and he looked anywhere but at Dei. "Kay." he muttered, so low it was hardly hearable.
Deimos finally released his grasp on the lion, feeling triumphant again. "I don't think they'd be able to put that lion of yours in a zoo either. He looks tought." Deimos said, lookign around before going down and lifting Sabriel up again. "I'd take care of him though. Who knows when enemy pirates will attack." He said, starting back up. Keep your enemies closer, his mind recited. He hadn;t forgivne him quite yet, but, why have enemies when you could have allies...
Sabriel almost fell over when Deimos let go, but just as quickly found himself scooped up. The compliments made him feel a bit proud. Nope! His lion would probably eat all of the other animals, then run out of the zoo and beat up panthers - or pirates, whatever.
It was okay if Deimos hadn't exactly forgiven him; they were even, then.
Chin was dozing when they came back up, looking out over the dark lake with her head in her hands. The noise from the steps made her start - turning, she saw Deimos and Sabriel come up on the deck. Neither of them looked like they'd been injured. And the lion was thankfully intact.
"How'd it go?" she asked lightly.
"Good enough.." Deimos replied, handing Sabriel back to his mother. He glanced at the lion again and smirked. "Be careful with that lion, Sabriel." He said teasingly, a spark and a flickering falme appering in his hand. "I may change my mind about being so nice if you aren't..."
Sabriel scrambled up to his usual post, hooking the lion in Chin's scarf. Figuring it was safe, he leaned over and stuck out his tongue. Tradition. He then sat back, pleased.
"Hear that, up there? I'm glad to hear that, though." Chinchillie was surprised by the change, just knowing there was a story in this. She held out a hand to Deimos. "Thanks a lot for showing us the ship...and good luck with your practicing. I think we'd better head back." she said apologetically. "It's been a long day."
Deimos extinguished the flame and shook CHin's hand. "No troubles, Ms. Chin." He siad simply and smirked at Sabriel, before turning around. He had things to sort out below deck. Had to get ready for spring, when he'd truly sail somewhere far.
The air was getting cool, and the day was beginning to catch up with them both. Chin was careful down the gangplank, but when her feet touched grass, hurried back to their room. They hadn't explored all the panther hideouts on the grounds but that could wait until tomorrow.
Sabriel yawned, stealing some of the scarf for himself as the day's hero. He'd narrowly escaped panther attacks, getting hit in the head, and being burned...that was enough for one day.

--Miss Lenore - January 3rd, 2006--
Singing quietly to herself, toying boredly with the razor feathers in her hair, Lenore sat out in the hall outside her room. Crow and Julian were off doing something, and she had locked herself out. Jimmying the lock open with a notched razor feather hadn't done any good, and none of the creatures inside seemed to hear her pounding, kicking, and screeching to be let inside.
Then again, none of the creatures inside had opposable thumbs, so she supposed it wasn't precisely their fault for ignoring her.
Looking around, she wished for a little company. Sadako, after all, was inside, most likely trying to kill something.
"This is no beginning, yeah, yeah, This is the final cut, open up. This is no beginning, yeah, yeah, This is the final cut, I'm in love..."
Deimos emerged from his room, yawning. He'd slept all through the day and he felt very replentished. Looking around, he searched for something to do, so he walked. Turning the corner, he spotted Lenore and smiled. "Hey Len!" He exclaimed, walking over to her.
'Oh it's Ms. Lenore. My turn.'
'What do you mean it's your turn..' Diemos asked, unknowing of the deal Lenore had made with the demon while he had control, but a deal was a deal. Deimos felt his control slip off liek a glove.
There had beena moment's pause before Erebus opened his eyes. "Hello again, Ms. Lenore."
Lenore choked on her singing midword, head jerking up towards Deimos-that-wasn't.
"Hello, Erebus." she said, forcibly trying to keep her tone polite. It took a lot of effort. Curiously enough, there had been no pain to warn her of his approach - Lenore scarcely bothered to wonder about it. Perhaps meeting Erebus a second time had already dulled her senses to his discomforting presence.
"...So. Collecting in on the deal already?"
"But of course.. Deimos is still weak from the lessons. I could not have chosen a better time." He said, moving to her smoothly, taking her hand and kissing it lightly. "It is a pleasure to see you, as always."
"Ah."
Eyeing Deimos (or Erebus now, she supposed) with dislike and fascination mixed together, she budged over in her spot and motioned for him to sit.
"Well, then, c'mon. I ain't going anywhere for awhile, iffen Mum and Julian plan to stay out all day."
Smoothing her skirt down and toying with her pendant idly, she unfolded her wings slightly to expose the dagger-like points. She'd make small talk, sure, but she'd be damned if she wasn't going to present some kind of threat in her own defense.
Not that she could ever raise a feather to her captain, however.
Erebus smiled widely, a sly cold smile. "That would be lovely, Ms. Lenore." He said, taking a seat by her, right next to her, way to close to her, but not on top of her. He was borderline invading her space, but not. "Tell me, Ms. Lenore. I wish to go straight to the point. Why are you so hesitant around me? I am simply a lonely demon, Ms. Lenore.."
Lenore's lip curled, and her eyes narrowed. Restraining her razor feathers from rattling in threat, she looked away a little bitterly.
"Because...because I was meant to protect stuff. From things like you, I guess." she replied shortly, folding her wings back in sudden annoyance and crossing her arms.
"You an' me, we're practically kin anyway." she muttered, quipping Dobql unknowingly. Not wanting to bother getting into the mucked-up mess of her origins, she looked at Erebus with suspicious eyes.
"Why is it you're so keen on me? Do I....fascinate you, Mister Erebus?" she asked dryly, a barely-there smile quirking her lips.
"Yes." He answered simply, his glowing eyes turning onto Lenore. "I have lived for centuries, and have not encountered anything, or anyone like you. This place is unique, you are unique." His tail swished, wraping itself behind Lenore's back and placing it's tip onto her lap. "There are many demons, but there is only one Lenore.."
Certainly not the subtle type.
Her fingers curled away from the tail instinctively, a fuzzy recollection of pain like fire echoing at the edge of her memory.
"I'll take that as a compliment," she said, her voice losing a touch of its icy edge. She'd been stared at and insulted many times before and shrugged it off uncaring. But this unexpected appreciation of her differentness was something she definately had no defense for.
"I'm not going to start hanging out with you and trade gossip over tea, though, if that's what you're aiming for." she said quickly, scooting an inch or so away from him.
"Why don't you tell me a little more about yourself?"
Why the hell am I asking about him? I don't - shouldn't- give a rat's behind 'bout him- it's Dei I like, not this joker.
Erebus chuckled and it was an odd sound. It wasn't cold and icy, but it wasn't warm and welcoming. It was like a chilled breeze, not cold enoguh to be of winter, but nowhere near the spring. "Such a sense of humor, Ms. Lenore. But yes, me.. Well, I am 1423 years old, I think. After one hits 1000 you start to lose count. " He said jockingly. "I.. used to be a Master demon, legions of minions and what not." His tone dropped a bit. "Hard to belive isn't it.. while I'm stuck in a body liek this." His lips quirked in attempt to smile as he sighed.
Len's face shuttered into a defensive expression, regardless of Erebus's laugh.
"What's the matter with Deimos?" she asked tightly, putting force behind his name. "He's a good friend, a good captain, and he's... well, a bit more easy to talk to," she added, looking a bit cross.
"That's pretty neat about the whole minion-thing, though. All I have are Sadako, Cole an' Maero, and they're not exactly a legion."
Quit being so chatty! He's just looking to...well, I dunno what. I wish Dei would come back so I didn't have to talk to this jerk.
A sudden thought sprang into her mind, in spite of her griping.
"So. Mister Macho Demon. If you're so old, you must really know your way around the world, huh?" she said, altering her tone slightly and leaning in a little closer, to try to catch him off guard.
Dei, if you're seeing this, I'm reeeeeeally sorry.
"You wouldn't happen to know what the Unseelie Court is, would you? Just out of curiosity," she said, eyes searching Erebus's for some sign of her friend, disappointed that she couldn't see him there.
He was caught of-guard and Deimos was seeing.
Deimos was retorting wildly. 'What is she? EREBUS! No, don't you dare!!
Erebus eyes flashed with Deimos' fury for a split second, but his lips parted in a sly grin. "I know the Unseelie Court very well actually." He said. "But I need something in exchange before I can tell you.."
Hope, violently unexpected, bubbled up in Lenore. He knew...he knew!
"Well, uh, um..." she spluttered, her cool air shattered in an instant. Pulling away again slightly, she cocked her head to one side, eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"What do you want?"
Erebus smirked widely. "A kiss. Just one.." He said simply, tapping his lips. He'd been very lonely for a very long time and he sorely missed one of his favorite passtimes from back when he was alive, which happened to be wooing and kissing women.
'Hell no! EREBUS!!!
Deimos thrashed out, making Erebus wince slightly, foricing himself to keep control and look back up to Lenore. "Just one and I'll tell you all you wish to know about the Unseelie court."
"Ah, crap."
She couldn't...she wouldn't. No way. Not a chance.
But....
"Agh. Dei, I'm sorry," she whispered, almost to softly for anyone to hear. Squirming in indecision, wishing she hadn't said anything at all, she looked at Erebus with a bitter expression.
"...Fine. But this is the -ONLY- time. EVER." she said coldly. He'd dangled the bait, and she'd have to go for it - she decided to ignore the fact that she'd brought this mess upon herself.
"Sorry, Captain," she said softly, before leaning in and kissing Erebus with a mix of resentment and guilt.
Erebus enjoyed this, he relished in it and as dreaful it was to say he was damned good at it. His tail curved around her again, out of pure instict and he ahd a sly grin plastered onto his face as they parted. "That was lovely, Ms. Lenore." He said. "I'll answer any questions you have about the Unseelie Court now." He said. He'd hold up on his end of the deal.
Reeling in guilt at what she'd done, Len wiped at her mouth in disgust with the back of her hand.
Deimos is gonna hate me now...
"I...ugh. OKay, then." she said, looking away in embarrassment. What would Deimos say when he came back? How could she face him?
"What is it?"
Brilliant starter, really.
Erebus smirked. So she knew nothing about it. Well, he may as well start from ground zero. "The world of the fey, the magical world, to put it simply, is divided into two courts. The Seelie Court is the court of light, where the beautiful creatures of magic reside, though beauty there can only be skin deep. The Unseelie court is the dark court of the fey, where all the being to dark, or imperfect to be accepted into the Seelie court reside. The Unseelie court is filled with the things of nightmares, if you're the type who si afraid of the dark."
"I ain't afraid of the dark. I ain't afraid of anything." Lenore replied stiffly, toying absently with the razor feathers in her hair.
Well, except cats.
And Sabriel. He was just plain scary.
"Jul-....uh, I heard someone mention something called the Horde once. What is that?"
Realizing she was already running out of questions, she decided to stall a bit for time.
"And just to go off-topic for a second, if you don't mind me asking.... How is it that Deimos got stuck with you?"
"The less you deal with the Horde, the better. They spread thier wings at night to plauge the world, and such things. Stealking, attacking, killing, that sort of low life thing." Erebus replied with a shrug, though at her secodn question, hsi eyes went narrow with anger.
"I fear I was the one stuck with Deimos.. I made enemies with some rather powerful people and they sent someone after me. ALmost killed me, I was taken in by an old woman.. Lady Zir tended to me while I recovered and how they repay her.. They kill her. I was in Lady Zir's debt and died defending her.. A priest fouled up the spell supposed to banish me,a dn created Deimos, trapping me here.."
Lenore bowed her head slightly. Killing?
Had she killed people, before?
Ah, Alecto, what did you do?
If only Alecto was stuck with her, like poor Dei was stuck with Erebus. Then she'd get some answers. But, no. Perhaps it was better that Alecto was gone - after all, who knew what she'd done as an Unseelie?
"Alright, alright. Sorry I asked it impolitely," she replied absently, looking down at her oddly-digited hands and wondering what they'd looked like before. Perhaps they'd been skeletal, hooked and clawed. Maybe they'd been paws.
"Why did she take care of you?"
She hadn't meant to voice the question - it'd just slipped out. Len eyed Erebus warily, hoping a bit that she hadn't insulted him. He was the only source of information she had.
Erebus sighed and shrugged. "Honestly.. I still haven't figured it out. The community shunned her for helping me, but she never backed down.." Erebus said. Lady Zir's reasoning still baffled him to this day. "I do belive that is enough questions about my past for today, however.."
"She sounds like a good person."
Twirling a thatch of hair around a finger unthinkingly, Lenore cast her brain around for another question to ask. She'd covered the basics, really - what the Unseelies where, the whole "Horde" thing...
"I wonder if I could go back?" she asked aloud, musing.
But, then, if she could... what would she do?
"To the court?" He said, his eyebrow wings flapping in amusement. "You can only get there by magic.. I could take you, but I'd have to think up a price.. " Erebus said. He never did much for free. "Oh the look of surprise on thier faces. I'm supposed to be dead, you see." He smirking broadly in exitement and malice.
Feeling distinctly uncomfortable at Erebus's sudden excitement, Lenore shook her head firmly.
"No. I have to find that Aubrey Tenbloom chick first - she's the one got me into this whole mess to begin with."
She eyed him curiously.
"Dei already promised to help burn stuff- er, help me when I go do the whole interrogation thing. Maybe when... if I find her, you can, I dunno, sic one of your minions on her or something."
Standing and stomping her legs where they tingled with sleep, she winced as her numbed knees buckled. Grumbling as she tried to get the feeling back in, she cocked her head to one side as she regarded him.
"You must really hate being stuck here, don't you." she said, more statement than question.
"You have no idea." Erebus said, remaining seated, but streching slightly. "Most of the time.. how can I describe it. It's like I'm stuck inside a room, with my only view beign a very small window." He said, rolling his eyes. "I rarely get this kind of freedom anymore.."
Lenore watched Erebus silently for a moment, a trace of pity playing on her face.
"I'm sorry," she said quietly, bright eyes searching his. "That must really suck."
Wincing again at the horrific tingling in her legs that signaled the return of blood flow, she sat down again, careful not to cross them.
"Is there any way you and Dei could separate?"
She wondered briefly what would happen to Erebus if he did try to leave - would he gain a body again, or become some sad, wispy little ghost of himself, clinging to life? The thought brought another swell of pity, and she placed her hand on top of his on a whim.
"I have people looking, but I don't expect to find anything and I don't know what would happen to me if Deimos were to die. For all I know, I might die as well." He sighed and shrugge, his hand moving to it was atop her and he squeezed it.
"SOmetimes I woudl have rather died than have to go on like this.. A second rate spirit taking residence in a body that isn't my own.."
"No offense, but I doubt Dei's finding it a barrel of laughs, either," she remarked dryly, though she made no move to remove her hand.
"If I could help you, though, I probably would. Just for the heck of it, really."
Realizing she was stuck, Lenore thought on what Erebus had mentioned about his age.
"And aren't you a little too old to get so up close with a five month old?" she asked, cocking an eyebrow sardonically.
"Aren't you a little young to be kissing a master demon?" He retorted quickly, smirking in satisfaction, keeping a rather stern hold on her hand. Erebus was in a terribly good mood. He'd gotten kissed, gotten to be out for a long time, and Deimos hadn't spoken a word since the kiss. This was turning out to eb a lovely day.
"Oh, ouch," Lenore snerked, smirking back.
I wonder what Dei's making of all this? He's probably going to gut me once he comes back...
"What is it that you do all day while Captain's busy? Sing "99 Bottles of Rootbeer" on a loop?" she asked. She was having a better conversation with Erebus than she'd expected - it was fun to tease him.
Erebus chuckled half-heartedly, but shook his head, his face darkening. "There is someone I need to get back at.. as soon as possible.. I spend lots of my time planning my revenge.." He siad, and his eyes glinted with malice. He wanted to see that angel squirm before he killed him.[
Manuevering her hand free, Lenore cracked her knuckles thoughtlessly and rested her chin on a fist.
"Is...is Dei still there? Or does he just...I dunno, go to sleep or something?"
Not that Erebus didn't interest her - heavens, no. But, she had a terribly irking feeling that the kiss she'd traded for information wasn't going to sit well with him...
"I think he's giving me the silent treatment. I can feel him here, but he doens't even think loud enough for me to hear." Erebus said, smirking as if this made him inmensely please.
Lenore winced. He was probably going to give her a lot worse, sooner or later.
"Oh. Well."
Getting a bit tired of trying to think of something to ask or say, she gave Erebus the up and down before speaking again.
"Is he mad?"
Erebus smirked widely adn nodded. "Very. If he keeps this up, I may just get to stay outside." He said, very pleased with himself. "Imagine, I may get to keep the body.." He said whsitfully, though he knew this was farfetched.
Knowing full well what Deimos was so angry about, Lenore jumped up.
"Don't count on it. He's...oh..."
She shook her head, unable to continue her retort.
"Well, chatting's been lovely, thanks for the info. You should go now," she mumbled, ducking her head down in embarrassment.
Erebus face fell and he sighed. "ALright.. I'll call him.." He muttered, closing his eyes. It had been good while it had lasted. His head lolled slightly, indicating the switch, but even with Diemos in control he made no move to even glance at Lenore.
Feeling immensely relieved that Erebus had gone, but feeling sick with guilt at the same time, Lenore crouched down beside Deimos and tried to catch his eye.
"I know you saw - I'm sorry, but I wanted to know so bad..." she murmured, knowing her apology was hardly worth the air she spent to speak it.
"Dei, please, I'm sorry."
Deimos averted his gaze, his cloak bristling with silent rage. "I.." He started, but didn't even seem to find the words to express his anger. After a moment silence, his shoulder's slumped and he shrugged.
"You don't need to apologize.." He said, ice in his voice as he stood. "He told me you liked him better, I just didn't believe him. Sorry." He said.
Who in the WHAT, now?! Lenore gaped at Deimos, fighting off an absurd urge to whack him upside the head to even think something so...so....gross.
"Are you out of your bleedin' MIND?" she squawked, razor feather rattling at the offense. "HE said that? For the love of God, Captain, how could you ever believe something HE said? I mean - just- UGH. Boys." she gave a huff, crossing her arms and shaking her head in exasperation.
"Big, little, demon or angel, you're all alike. Sheesh."
Pausing in her ranting and taking a deep breath to calm herself, Lenore looked at Deimos carefully. It took every ounce of willpower she had to keep the ire out of her voice.
"Deimos, you're my first friend, my Captain, and mebbe summat more. I do NOT like Erebus more than you - I barely like 'im at all. I like you."
She gave a scoff of disbelief at the notion Dei had in his head, arching an eyebrow and frowning.
"Then why'd you kiss him, Len? You didn't have to. We could have found things out any other way. Found a book, even pummeled it out of that Aubrey woman." Deimos said, his fist shaking as he turned blazing eyes to Lenore.
"You played right into his hand, you let him use you. This was all he wanted from the start and you said it yourself. Why believe anything he says? He could have just lied to you Lenore? You can't be sure he answered anything!!" He said, his voice gradually raising.
Her insulted anger dissapated at another surge of guilt, though frustration bubbled up beside it.
"Because there are no books! Don't you think I've looked? There's nothing - nothing at all! And I don't even know where Tenbloom is! And you know what? I'm scared of her!"
Her voice was caught with angry tears as she stomped a foot in frustration.
"She tried to make me a slave! I'm scared to death of what she could do to me!"
Feeling disgusted at the trembling under her angry, raised voice, she wiped a few tears away with the back of her hand.
"I traded a stupid kiss because I had to hope he knew something I don't anymore. It was just a kiss. I didn't want to do it, and it meant nothing between me an' him."
Lenore paused the roughly wipe away a few more tears before speaking again.
"I know he probably lied. But it was something to go on. Whether or not it's true, at least I know something."
The Aubrey-woman had tried to make Lenore.. a.. a slave? Lenore should probably be very thankful for Deimos short attention span because all, well, most of his anger was very quickly turned towards Aubrey. Go ADD.
"SHe did what?" He said, his anger rising a few degrees. His head turned sharply to look into Lenore's eyes, his own eyes blazing with rage. "I would never let anyone make you thier slave.. I.. I'll kill her if I have to." He said, fury making his fists and voice shake.
Glad that the target of Dei's anger had shifted off her, Lenore took a deep breath to collect herself.
"Nah, don't kill her. A beatin' would do just fine." She sighed, deciding to get things cleared up once and for all.
"That's why I was made in the first place - she was trying to build a slave to guard some dumb cemetery, but she messed up. From what I could get out of Mum, she tried to keep me for a bit and train me, but she couldn't. That's how I wound up here-" she paused, waving her hands in the general direction of HQ. "- at the adoption place. When I couldn't be her slave, she threw me away."
She managed a bleak grin, having thoroughly depressed herself.
"But at least no one treats me bad here."
Deimos anger lesesned a bit in it's outward appearance. "I won't let anyone do anything to you, Len.." He said, his voice stern in promise. "Not.. not even Erebus.." He said, though he knew this.. this would be hard. He wouldn't let Erebus out anymore, not after this. "I'm a Captain. I'm supposed to defend my crew.."
Smiling brightly with the hope all was forgiven, Lenore swept into a soldier's salute.
"An' crew members're loyal to their Captain - I promise I won't do somethin' so dumb again. Ever." she chirped, hoping Erebus was listening. She gave a sudden evil smile, quirking her brows suggestively.
"And once I find out where that idiot witch is, there'll be plenty of violence tah go around. I get first dibs, though - evidently she dropped me a couple times. I want some payback."
Deimos smirked and nodded. "I get to torch ehr a bit though." He said, his body straightened as she called him Captain. He had to walk like one, right. Tall and proud. "SOem as if we ever get a shot at Erebus, I call first dibs."
'Ha, not gonna happen.'
Deimos face turned grave and he focused on stickign Erebus into the further parts of his mind, locked, shackled, and bound, and in Deimos mind, unfortunatly for Erebus, Deimos thoughts ruled.
Lenore's smile twisted slightly, almost imperceptibly, at the thought of harming Erebus. Ignoring it and excusing it as an itch, she scratched at her chin and nodded.
"You betcha."
Feeling suddenly a little awkward, she pigeoned her toes slightly and hunched her shoulders, looking up at Dei shyly.
"Am I forgiven?"
Deimos paused and looked over to her, his eyes conceling emotion. He looked her up and down, as if looking at an odd painting that he was trying to understand. He sighed at the end and nodded.
"Yah.. you didn't want to do it.. It's his fault anyways.." He said softly.
Lenore gave a sigh of genuine relief and hugged Deimos on impulse, releasing him quickly and blushing slightly despite herself.
"Good. What good is a pirate without her captain, anyway." she mumbled, smiling slightly.
"Speakin' of that... when do we get to start raidin' towns? I mean, we got the crew, an awesome ship... it seem's a waste to let everythin' just sit around."
Deimos cheeks flsuehd slightly but he smirked. "Once spring hits. I've tried sailing a bit, but the lake is still iced over, can't do too much." He said. "I've been getting pretty good too. I can use air magic to move the ship."
Grinning wickedly as she imagined the promise spring brought with it, she nodded, impressed.
"That's awesome - I still can't do much with air-type stuff. Pretty good with shadows now, though. Check it out," she said, placing her hand on a shadowed bit of wall. As she removed her hand, the shadow seemed to follow, thin as smoke, peeling itself off the wall. It took a lot of effort on Lenore's part to do it - she had to release it after a minute, her concentration broken by sudden draining of her energy.
"Neat, huh?"
Deimos gaped. "That.. is.. so COOL!" He exclaimed, sorely wuishing he could do that as well. He went to the wall touching the shadow which she had move and he grinned. "Noone will be able to beat us, Len.." He said, his grin matching hers.
Deimos watched her and he smirked. She was tired... Just like he got tired whenever he used to much air magic.. "Maybe you should sleep, Len.. Gotta be at full strength if we want to be good pirates." He said, flexing his arm proudly, though he didn't have much to show off, despite being particularly strong.

Deimos' Journal - January 19th, 2006 I'm having some problems... Ever since Erebus spoke with Lenore I've been having problems.. I tried locking Erebus away, but now.. I've had nightmare every night since. At first, I.. didn't remember them, just bits and pieces, but now they're getting worse. I see death whenever I close my eyes and it's all Erebus' fault. These are his memories, I know it. He did all these things. He killed all these people.. It makes me sick just thinking about how he can be inside me.. after all those things he's done. I tried confronting him, but I can't seem to find him. I feel him, somewhere deep in my mind, but I can't find him.. I'm tired.. I haven't slept in the past two days, but it doesn't help. I close my eyes and I see it again. It's driving me crazy...

Deimos' Journal - January 20th, 2006 I feel asleep by accident last night.. I just couldn't stay up. No matter what I've tried nothing helps.. Whenever I read, I fall asleep. Whenever I listen to music, I fall asleep. I even tried drinkign a lot of soda or coffee before bed, smuggling it from the kitchens, but even then I fall asleep for a few minutes, and that's enough to bring more nightmares. The dreams have been getting worse, even though they are shorter.. It's not just murders and fires anymore, but women, children.. Sick things.. I keep a strong face, for Mother.. She can't know.. She can't know that Erebus did these things. I'm made from him.. does that mean I'll do these kinds of things too..

--Dark Rings-- Participants: Deimos and Malachi
Badly hidden dark rings were clear under Deimos eyes. He'd obviously smuggled some makeup at sometime, but all it did was add a pinkish ting to the dark yellow skin. His eyes were droopy, he was tired, not having slept in days, but he couldn't sleep. Not with the things he saw in his sleep, not with the memories he kept recalling. Memories that weren't even his.
He was sitting on his ship, looking upwards at the clouds, singing idly, forcing himself to stay away. His ship was the place where he found the most comfort, he'd learned, so he spent as much time as he could abourd the Black Dawn... "yo ho.. yo ho.. a pirate's life for me..."
"We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot. Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho!" Ike sang in response to Dei's line, nearly leaping onto the ship.
He immediately noticed his big brother's strange appearence.
"Are you...okay?"
Deimos turned his eyes slowly to Ike and they fought to close, but he fought back keeping them open. He gave a small shrug, his eyes turning back onto the clouds. "I'm.." He trailed off, his voice even tired from the lack of energy.. "alright.." He finished finally, the lack of sleep getting to his head.
"You're tired," Ike leaped up beside Dei and sighed, "What's wrong?"
It didn't take a lot to make Dei mad...but to make him not sleep? It had to be serious.
Deimos' shook his head, though at what he wasn't sure. "I don't need sleep..." He said surely, no doubt in his tone.. "I'm just a bit.. drowsy.. that's all.."
"You need sleep, and you're more than drowsy," Ike shook his head, "Somethings wrong. You can tell me. I won't tell anyone."
Deimos looked over to his brother and he closed his eyes, opening them almost immediatly as violent images flash before him.. "I..I'm dreaming things.. Memories.. Erebus' memories.." His eyes went back to the sky.. "I don't need sleep.." He repeated, in the same nonchalant tone as before..
"Ah," Ike said, understanding completely. The whole posession thing wasn't exactly being nice to him.
"That's no excuse to not sleep, though. They're not yours...they're just...kinda like really bad nightmares...that...happened..."
Deimos' claws traced along the lines of the wood, his mind trying to focus on anything, everything but falling asleep. "You haven't seen them Ike.." His eyes gave a soft flare of anger, and he actualy scratched a bit off the wood with his claws.. "If.. if you saw it you'd know.. You wouldn't sleep either.."
Ike huffed through his nose. Sure, he didn't see a demons memories, but what about psychotic genocidals bastards? Not that he would ever bring that up.
"Maybe so, but you need sleep. Have you tried other things? Dream catchers? Spells?"
He shook his head. "You can't tell anyone.." He said, and looked over at Ike, his face dead serious. "You can't tell.. I.. I can deal with this.." He didn't voice his fear, of why he didn't want anyone to know.. nor his confusion as to whatr a dream catcher could be...
"I won't, but..." Ike thought for a moment, "People are bound to notice. You look like death."
He paused and took a deep breath before continuing.
"I really don't think you can, bro. Not sleeping...it isn't safe..."
His muscles instinctively tensed for an attack.
Deimos muscles tensed and his fist's tightened, but he kept himself.. "I can manage.. I'm a captain.. I don't need help.." He said, taking breaths to calm himself. Images of death flashed before him, even with his eyes opened and he winced taking a hand to his head.. He wanted them to go away..
"Even captains need help," Ike said, wanting badly to wrap an arm around Dei but knowing better, "That's what they have crews for."
There wasn't going to be much reasoning with the demon boy, he knew. He was supposed to tell an adult, Mummy had taught him...but he couldn't defy his big brother.
Visions flashed before his eyes as he blinked. Visions of Erebus, torturing his own minions. Deimos' eyes became angry. "My.. my crew can't help me." He said, though hsi voice began to shake in silent fear.. He'd.. he'd never hurt his crew that way.. would he?
"If I...if we can't," Ike huffed, the tips of his ears growing red, "then maybe someone else can. There has to be something someone can do to...get rid of 'em...or something."
Deimos, succeptable to rapid mood changes thanks to lack of sleep, chenched his fist, and it was only the fresh memories of torture that kept him from wanting to hurt Ike at the moment. "I can;t tell anyone!" He said, his voice rising in fury and he turned angry eyes at Ike, before another flash of memories went by him and anger quickly vanished into fear.. "I can't tell anyone... I shouldn't have told you.."
"Dei! You have to tell someone aside from me!" Ike cried, his eyes wide and his ears folded back, "I won't do it...but...you need some help! If it's as bad as you say..."
"I can't.." He said, his modd swinging again, his voice a hushed whisper.. "He's a part of me.. he.. he made me.." He began shakily, perhaps for the first time showing true, unbridles fear in his face and eyes. "I can't tell anyone.. not.. nto when.. that could be me some day.."
Ike couldn't help but laugh.
"You may not have control over your memories," he said, "but you certainly have control over that jerk. I don't think you'd ever give in to...mass...genocide."
The laugher drove Deimos once again over the edge from fear into anger and he slammed his fist into the wood, having it splinter and crack under him. "Damn it Ike. That's the problem.. I don't have control.." He said.. "********.." He said, using that cussword for the first time, though he'd heard it before, he knew it was harsh, it jsut seemed appropriate. "I.. damn.." He started, his eyes traveling to where he had dented the ship and he dug his head into his hands, repeating the word again..
"Then learn to get control," Ike's eyes narrowed, "A captain can't wanna light his crew on fire."
"I thought I did.. but he broke free during flight training. He just took over when he saw Lenore..." He took in a gulp. "I couldn't stop him at all.. I locked him away, or tried to. but now I'm.. seeing these things.." It showed very clearly now, in the way he sat, the way he just gazed at the ground fighting to stay awake.. Deimos was terrfied..
"We're still kids. There's plenty of time to get stronger," Ike tried to explain, "You could...get control when you get older...and...the memories..." The boy trailed off. He really hadn't the slightest idea about controlling the memories.
Deimos sighed.. Ike didn't know either.. "When he's there, he bothers me.. when he's not.. there's this..." He said and his eyes went through the bars of the railing to the cool waters, before he looked away.. He'd never learned to swim...
"I'm dangerous now.. I was lucky.. last time.." He found himself feeling almost dirty for saying that, but it was true. "Erebus had complete control.. I barely knew what was going on.. He.. He could have hurt Lenore if he had wanted too.."
Great. Now Dei sounded psychotic.
"I won't be able to help," Ike said simply.
He quite possibly was psychotic. He wouldn't put it past himself, certainly.. Deimos mind raced, his thoughts interrupted by flases, like subliminal messages, of death and destruction. He could try to..blood.. no he could possibly.. kill.. what about sleeping.. murder..
He burried his face in his hands again before he spoke, lifting his head, forcing his voice to stay solid, unshaking. "what's a dreamcatcher..." he asked, desperation leaking into his voice..
"Erm..." Ike knotted his brow, trying to think, "It's a magical thing, I think. String on a frame with beads and feathers. it's supposed to keep the bad dreams away at night. I dunno if they work. Dezzy has one."
Deimos nodded as he spoke, though it was possibly because his eyes were lulling and he kept fighting to be awake. "I.. I'll ask.." He muttered, when sleep caugh hold of him and his head olled onto the railing, his eyebrow wings furred as dreams bombarded him.
Ike sighed and smiled slightly. At least he was getting sleep. The squirrel boy waved to his unconscious brother as he began making his way off the boat. He'd go tell someone that Dei was asleep, just in case.
But that was all he was going to tell.

--Bad Dream Catchers--
"Mother?"
Jizzy gaze looked up from the book she was studying. SHe looked over at her son, eyes red with dark rings lining them. She knew he couldn't sleep, but.. he... he never came to her for help. Was she that bad a parent? "Yes, Dei.."
"I.. I want a dreamcatcher, mother.." He said, quickly. It made him feel so weak to have to rely on other for help, but it had just come to that point.
Jizzy nodded immediatly. "Of course. Tommorow I'll go shopping bright and early.. Everything is closed by now.." So it was nightmares that bothered him.. Worry filled her more than usual. "Is that all you need?" She asked, hoping that by some chance, he would open up to her..
Deimos nodded. "Yes.." He paused. "Thanks.." He finally said, turning and striding back into his room.
Jizzy let out a long sigh. He.. He just wasn't the type, to open up that way. She jsut hoped she was doing well to help him, even if he didn't tell her what was wrong.

--Dark Coffee-- Participants - Deimos and Lenore
Deimos toddled slowly into the kitchen, his eyes now red and blood-shot to add onto the dark rings below them. How could he have let himself fall asleep.. and Ike.. he probably sent for someone, so Deimos dashed as fast as he could when he woke.
He'd asked mother for one of those.. bad dream catchers, but all the shops were closed. She couldn't get him one until tommorow. SO now all he could do was try not to sleep, try to ignore the images that flashes in his mind.
He walked towards the coffee machine, stumbling around in the dark, despite that he could see much better than a human could. He blinked, continued forth blearily..
Wandering the halls alone as was becoming a favored past time of hers, Lenore hummed lightly to herself as she twirled and danced around.
It was fun to have time to herself.
As she ventured down HQ, towards the kitchen, she heard someone stumbling around in the dark. She drew back slightly - who could possibly be up this late besides her?
Creeping forward, her large eyes easily seeing through the dark, she cocked her head to one side curiously as she focused on the stumbler's face.
"Dei? What're you doing up?"
Deimos gave a very jittery, startled jump, before turning his tired eyes to Lenore.. "Oh.. Hi Len.." He said simply, avoiding the question and pressing forth towards the coffe maker.. Switching it on, it hummed, starting up, starting to pour out the black substance into the glass. GOod.. He liked his coffe dark.. it kept him up..
Approaching Deimos slowly so not to spook him again, she stood beside him and tried to get a better look at his face. He looked terribly tired....
"Dei, what's the matter? You look sick," she said worriedly, touching his arm lightly.
The sharp smell of the coffee caught her attention for a second, and she reached a finger up to the stream on a whim. The liquid burnt her finger slightly, but she showed no discomfort as she stuck her finger in her mouth to taste. She made a face and spat out what little coffee she'd gotten, wiping her mouth ferociously.
"What is that stuff? Tastes like crud."
He pulled slowly from her touch, not looking her straight in the eye, not after the lecture he'd gotten from Ike. "It's coffee.. It's useful, not tasty.." He said softly, reaching up for a cup and filling it up to the brim, adding no sugar or milk. He didn't like the taste, but, anything to keep him awake. With that thought in mind, he took a long swig.
Lenore was of the mindset that she needed to know everything. Having her questions ignored was by far the most annoying thing someone could ever do to her. Grabbing Dei's arm again and giving him a sharp look, she frowned at him.
"Captain, what's going on? Why won't you tell me what's wrong? You can trust me, you know," she said, feeling a little offended.
Why wouldn't he answer her? She wanted to know so bad - it was almost painful, not getting to know something she wanted to.
"There's nothing wrong!" He snapped, jerking his arm away from her harshly, the coffee spilling all over the floor and his arm.. He made no move to wipe the scalding liquid from his arm as it steamed, making his yellow skin turn red. "I just. cna't sleep... That's all.." He said, his voice losing it's anger as he turned his back to Lenore, going to refill his cup.. Did.. did he really look that bad... that everyone was asking like this?
Ignoring his tone, satisfied that her question had been answered at last, Lenore started to mop up the spilled liquid with her sleeveless bathrobe.
Balling up the sodden, stinking garment, she tossed it aside and leaned against the coffee machine, eyeing him warily.
"I'm sorry - didn't mean to annoy you. Are you having bad dreams?"
The question was asked in total innocence - she couldn't help but wonder what was wrong to make him snap at her.
"It's nothing.." He said simply, though his grip tightened on his coffe cup, to such an extent that it cracked and shattered beneath his fingers. He blinked a bit, as if sow in realizing what he'd done.. About a minute after he blinked, and bent down, starting to silently pick up the pieces...
Lenore quirked a brow at Dei and bent down to help clean up.
"You're lying." she said shortly. Unrolling her bathrobe and sopping up the freshly spilled coffee, she gave a sigh and threw the ruined thing away.
"Tell me what's wrong. I could help, maybe."
His eye looked up to meet hers, red, tired and serious.. Fear glimmered in the edges, as if trying very hard to be hidden.. "noone can help.. I'm.. already on it. I'm.. goig to get. one of those.. bad dream catchers." He said in his defense, though he hoped the dream catcher would work, he doubted it would.
Dissatisified with the response, Lenore sat back on her heels and regarded Deimos worriedly.
"Objects like that don't work - not for things like us, anyway."
Something like a dreamcatcher had, after all, been designed for humans - what kind of relief would Deimos receive from such a thing, if at all?
"But....maybe I could help somehow. I got a Ouija Board. Mebbe that'd help some how. Iffen it was Erebus trying to hurt you, maybe we could...talk to someone dead. Ask them what to do."
It was a particularly lame idea - but it was the only one she could think of.
The idea of talking to someone dead made Deimos pale slightly, and feel a bit sick to his stomach. He shook his head. AFter all the scenes of death that'd been forced upon him he didn't want to have to do with anything dead. For all he knew it'd have some grudge against him, against Erebus.
"I'll handle it. Don't worry.. I'm a captain, remeber.. I can do it." He said, trying to reassure her, though his own voice shook with fear and exhaustion. His tired mind began searching for way to hide his condition. Already two people had noted it him, not counting the many times Mother had mentioned it.
He looked up at Lenore, at her worried face and he sighed inwardly. He didn't want this, people worrying about him like this. He forced his voice steady, placing a hand on her shoulder as he straightened back up. "DOn't worry, k.. I'll be back to normal in no time..."
Wishing she could do something more, Lenore took Dei's hand gingerly and gave him a slight smile.
"It'll be okay," she said. She couldn't think of anything else to say - this wasn't like Deimos at all, and it was beginning to scare her.
She wasn't the only one to feel helpless. He yawned widely, trying to fight the sleep off him, but it was starting to overtake him.. "Len.." He started.. He needed to sleep, he knew it, but he didn't want to see those memories again, not knowing that could be his future.
"If I.. have to go..." To prevent myself from killing you all, you see.. "you'll take care of the Dawn for me, right? You and the crew.."
Fear clenched at Lenore's stomach - he made it sound as though he was dying or something.
"Yes sir, Captain. I'll keep 'er safe for you, promise."
She grabbed at his hand a little harder, eyes wide.
"But ever'thing will be alright - don't worry."
Deimos nodded, giving her hand backa semi-reassuring squeeze. "That's only if things get really bad.." He said confidently. He.. he wasn't going to do those things, but in his state, his mind was unsure of everything.. "I.. I just don't knwo how things will work out, Len.." He admitted, and deep down he kicked himself. He was getting weak. Captain's couldn't be weak...
Feeling almost sick with worry, Lenore nodded and tried to keep her expression neutral. Figuring he was most likely sick of being comforted, she took his hand in both of hers and clung to it.
"It'll be fine," she said a little forcefully. She refused to believe there was something Dei couldn't handle going on.
He nodded almsot robotically. "Right.. I.. I'll work through this.." He said softly, looking up at Len. He had to wor through this. He couldn't let this.. rule him, but for now.. He'd just have to stay awake.. His eyes lids dropped slightl and he jolted hismelf back awake.. Sorely wishing to change the subject, he asked blearily.. "How are your shadown powers coming?"
Letting go of Dei's hand a little regretfully, she gave him an only slightly forced smile.
"Pretty good, I guess. I don't pass out after I use them, anyway."
To exhibit how much skill she'd gotten, she bent down and laid her hand on the shadowed floor. Rising slowly, she lifted her hand, coaxing the shadow to follow. It responded obediently, swirling like smoke and curling around her fingers. Jerking her hand sharply, she seemed to tear off a piece of the shadow, letting the rest fall back into place.
"I can make it turn into different shapes n' stuff. Can't make it attack anyone yet, though. Still working on that."
The shadow felt cool and light in her hand as she willed it into a lumpy cube. As it shifted into the desired shape, she gave a rare real smile and held it out to Deimos.
"Check it out - I can make it corporeal now."
Deimos gave her a genuine, tired, but genuine smile as he reached out, his fingers touching the shadows calmly.. He smiled wider. "That's amazing.." He said to her, truly awestruck by what she could do.
He coulod jsut cast fire, and barely now with this sleep deprivation. Remembering thier last lesson his smile stayed on his face. "We should go flying one day.."
Len nodded eagerly, smiling again.
"Yeah! I've gotten loads better - I don't even have to use Air stuff to help me stay up anymore!"
Toying with the bead of shadow as the conversation lulled, Lenore got a swoop of inspiration. Focusing hard and nearly giving herself an aneurysm, she forced the bead to stretch and warp into a sharp, almost dagger-like shape. Breathing a bit hard, she held it out, lumpy handle towards Dei.
"Here," she said, trying to look nonchalant as she presented him a weapon. "Somethin' to cheer you up. Shadow's aren't that hard to get solid - it's shaping them and keeping 'em that way that's a little tough."
She hesitated, then pressed the thing into his hand.
"I dunno what good it'll do, but at least it's something."
He took it gently into his fingers, feeling it cool to the touch. He fingers wrapped around the handle tightly. It.. it was solid. He felt a small smile crack his lips.
"Will. WIll it always stay this way?" He asked eagerly. He hoped it wouldn't vanish, the way many shadows did, in the light or after a while.. He wanted to keep this, treasure it, much like the way he treated her feather, which was still taped to his tail.
"It should - I mean, I think it will. Just keep it out of really bright sunlight, and it'll be fine," Lenore replied, pleased that she'd made Dei happy.
Looking him over quietly for a second, she gave him a smile, quick and genuine.
"It'll keep you safe."
Deimos ahd the urge to hug her. His mother's habits rubbed off on him, but he didn't hug her. He jsut wasn't that type. He did keep his hand tightly on the hilt and rushed a finger against the cold blade.
A tiny cut came from the light motion and he smiled even wider. "I'll use it to keep us all safe.." He muttered, yawning soon after he spoke.. He looked at the lock on the wall.. Mother ussually came by his room at this time, to find him feigning sleep.
"I need to go Len.." He murmured, holding the dagger tightly. "I.. I promise I'll sort this out.. on my own.." He emphasized the three last words, more of a 'don't tell anyone' sort of tone than anything else. He didn't want anyone, especially the adults, knowing this.
He moved to the door, cast one last glance back at his friend and left before his mother found his bed empty..
